TABLE OF CONTENTS

In 1996 mountain biking and triathlon met in a duel of thefittest on the island of Maui. The race consisted of an open-ocean swim, a mountain bike race, and a trail run. Itrepresented a bold new racing format that attractedoutdoor enthusiasts, adventure seekers, mountain bikersand triathletes. The mountain bikers brought their laid-backstyle and bold self-assurance. The triathletes brought theirhard-core training and avid dedication. They soondiscovered a common spirit and attitude that pulled themtogether. The relationship would become an internationally-recognized brand called XTERRA.

Since that day, XTERRA has grown into the world’s leadingoff-road triathlon with more than 300 races in 25 countries, including 70 in the XTERRA America Tour alone.

A typical XTERRA is comprised of the following: 1.5 kilometer (0.93-mile) swim in an ocean, lake, or river 30 kilometer (18.6-mile) mountain bike on off-road trails 10 kilometer (6.2-mile) trail run on a variety of surfaces

2015 marks the 20th consecutive year of XTERRA racing, and it’s 12th year in Utah.

XTERRA Nationals is the last race in the America Tour forboth our nationwide off-road triathlon and trail runningseries, offering up $80,000 in prize money for pros and 50qualifying spots into the XTERRA World Championshiptriathlon for amateurs, as well as the chance to win anational championship title. XTERRA = REAL. AUTHENTIC. RACING.There is no barbed wire. No fire pits. No zombies. NoGimmicks.

For 20 years now XTERRA has hosted authentic endurancesports challenges – off-road triathlons and trail runs - forthose who believe the obstacles provided by Mother Natureare awesome enough.

A fitting representation of this “XTERRA Tribe,” more thanone-thousand of America's top outdoor athletes, are here inUtah to race against the best-of-the-best for the title ofXTERRA National Champion

The main event, the USA Championship triathlon, startswith a one-mile swim in Pineview Reservoir (4,900-feet ele-vation), follows with an 18-mile mountain bike leg thatclimbs more than 3,000-feet to the top of Sardine Peak(7,300-feet elevation), and culminates with a 7-mile trail runfeaturing another 600-feet of climbing on trails aroundSnowbasin Resort in the Wasatch Range.

Pros will race for $80,000 in prize money, dozens ofcameramen will position themselves around WheelerCanyon and the Wasatch Range to capture all the action fora nationally syndicated one-hour TV show, and amateurswho qualified will have a go at winning a national title.

To qualify for the main event athletes had to finish in the top15 of their division at one of the 60 XTERRA Point Seriesraces held across the country since March.

Those who didn’t qualify can race the same distance in theXTERRA Utah long course event, and there is also a half-distance sprint race open to everyone along with relay-teamoptions.

All three triathlons will be held Saturday, September 19 andon Sunday it’s the trail runners tur]]n on the mountain.

The XTERRA Trail Run Nationals half-marathon featuresscenic views, technical trails, and big climbs. The half-marathon, plus the 5K and 10K trail runs are open to every-one, and it’s important to note that you don’t have to be fastto join in the fun. For some, it’s just about finishing andthat’s okay as XTERRA is all about perpetuating the healthy, active, outdoors lifestyle.

In addition to the races XTERRA will host an expo in down-town Ogden on Friday with free kids races, vendor booths,a Paul Mitchell hair cut-a-thon for charity, and evening din-ner parties. Then on Saturday from 8am to 10pm the streetsshut down for a massive, community wide block party asOgden hosts its 14th annual Harvest Moon Celebration witha wealth of family-friendly activities including live music, afarmer’s market, kid’s activities, arm wrestling, pumpkindecorating, and fantastic fare from Historic 25th Street’sincredible restaurants.

There is great entertainment to be found at SnowbasinResort as well highlighted by the spontaneous, ecstatic, andsometimes tear-jerking displays of emotion at the finish linefor the races.

While it is an epic spot for winter sports (think 3,000 skiableacres and 3,000 vertical feet) Snowbasin is also ideal in thesummer time and when the fall colors turn the mountainlandscape into a kaleidoscope of colors, it’s simplyspectacular.

AN XTERRA KIND OF TOWN - OGDEN, UTAHIt’s long been said that XTERRA is more than just a race, it’sa lifestyle. Perhaps nowhere is that more evident than inOgden, Utah where the Mayor, Mike Caldwell, was thefounder and race director for the first XTERRA race inOgden back in 2004! Mayor Caldwell and a collection of thecoolest locals to be found anywhere rallied the entirecommunity to bring off-road triathlon to their hometown andare everyday XTERRA people. They swim, bike, and run inthe mountains, have fun, eat well, laugh, andunpretentiously perpetuate the sports’ motto – “Live More”.

“There’s really a love affair going on with XTERRA andOgden,” said XTERRA President Janet Clark. “Thecommunity is unbelievably supportive. It’s the only placeI’ve ever been where people – with no affiliation to the raceat all - have stopped me on the street to say thanks forbringing XTERRA to town.”

“With the altitude, friendly people, and great facilities thiswould be an incredible place for all kinds of athletes to train. As people become more aware of how great Utah is, it couldbecome the next Mecca for endurance sports, it’sgorgeous,” said Melanie McQuaid.

As the XTERRA nation gathers in Ogden, here are just afew of the cool things they can see, do, and eat:

Snowbasin Resort: Just 35 miles north of Salt LakeCity, the race venue at Snowbasin is world-class andwas home to the downhill and Super G races of the 2002Winter Olympics. While it is an epic spot for winter

sports (think 3,000 skiable acres and 3,000 verticalfeet), Snowbasin is also ideal in the summer time andwhen the Fall colors turn the mountain landscape into akaleidoscope of colors, it’s simply spectacular.

Historic 25th Street: Right in the heart ofdowntown Ogden, 25th street has it all withincredible restaurants like Rooster’s BrewingCompany, Brewskis, and Tona Sushi Bar &Grill, colorful history and museums at UnionStation, an outdoor amphitheater, art galleries, retail shops, and while XTERRA is in town – the Harvest Moon celebra-tion. The streets shut down for a community wide blockparty that runs all day and culminates with the Ethan Tuckerconcert and XTERRA post-race celebration.

For the kids: Get an up-close look at the fearsomeTyrannosaurus Rex at Ogden’s Dinosaur Park where theyhave hands on exhibits and eight acres of lifesizeddinosaurs in a natural outdoor environment. Also check outthe award-winning exhibits and programs at the TreehouseChildren’s Museum, and run & ride in XTERRA’s free kidsraces on Friday, September 20 starting at 4pm.

Trails: In addition to the course offerings at Snowbasin takesome time to ride the east bench of Ogden “home to aspaghetti bowl of singletrack trails,” and the pristineBonneville Shoreline Trail along the slope of the WasatchMountains where the old shoreline of Lake Bonneville metthe hills.

XTERRA USA CHAMPIONSHIP COURSE DESCRIPTIONFive years ago the U.S. Forest Service let XTERRA use theSardine Peak Trail and the 7+ mile section of single anddouble track is now a fixture. The sweet and smooth pieceof trail offers amazing views and made the bike course “atrue mountain race course that weaves in-and-out of aspenglades and pines,” said Snowbasin sport event operationsdirector Steve Andrus.

For the full tour, let’s start from the beginning when thecannon blast at 9am on Sept. 19, 2015 signals the start ofthe 15th annual XTERRA USA Championship race.

Roughly 350 professional and amateur racers from 45states will take off from Port Ramp Marina for a 1500-meterswim (two 750-meter laps) in Pineview Reservoir, wherewater temps hover near the “wetsuit-required” range(Competitor note: a final determination on if this will be awetsuit legal or optional swim will not be made until racemorning, so be prepared).

Swim Prime Alert: The top amateur male and female, timed from swim start to the T1 entrance, will win aXTERRA Vortex Full wetsuit.

Once on the bike racers leave the swim-to-bike transition(T1) and head west towards the Wheeler Canyon trail headfor the 28K mountain bike section. (Competitor note: Thefirst 1.5 miles is on Highway 158, a major road. Ride on theshoulder inside the delineators that will be placed toseparate racers from traffic).

OK, now to the fun part. It starts with mild, steady climbs ondirt, rock, and root-ridden mountain trails that climb throughthe magnificent Wheeler slot canyon.

The trail pops out at the Art Nord trail head where riderscross old Snowbasin road and climb up the East Fork trail, then drop down into some speedy descents to the MiddleFork trail, go across old Snowbasin road one more time andconnect with the Wheeler Creek Trail. Single trackdominates this 10-mile stretch and elevation gains from thewater at 4,900-feet to about 7,000-feet before a descent onMiddle Fork trail shoots you back down.

The Sardine section starts where the Wheeler Creek Trailmeets the Sardine Peak trail. Here riders are in for somemore climbing that will take them to the ridgeline, rewardingtheir efforts with spectacular views of Pineview Reservoir tothe right, and Snowbasin to the left.

“It certainly has that ‘wow’ factor, especially with theswitchbacks that twist and turn through the fall colors,” saidAndrus. “It’s a sensory riot.”

“The Sardine Peak section of the course is so sweet, aconstant smooth climb and wide enough to pass,” addedlocal phenom Nick Fisher.

More wide-open vistas of Ogden Canyon lay ahead beforethe downhill onto Maples trail speeds riders through ameadow filled with wildflowers and back to the bike-to-runtransition at the Snowbasin lodge area where spectators willhave the chance to see their friends and family coming in.

On to the trail run, the 6.1-mile trail run is pure singletrackminus a wide section coming out of transition that takesrunners to the start of Green Pond trail. The 10K single-looprun zigzags its way through aspen groves and fields ofwildflowers. There are a few short, very steep uphill’s andabout 700-feet of climbing then descending before thejubilation of finishing in front of loads of spectators, cameramen, cold beer, and a live band jamming away righton the bricks of the fabulous Snowbasin Resort.

XTERRA UTAH LONG COURSE: Starts at 9:20 a.m. and isidentical to USA Championship course described above

XTERRA UTAH SHORT COURSE: Starts at 9:40 a.m. Theswim is one 750-meter loop. The bike is 19K with roughly2,300-feet of climbing (it turns back to Snowbasin at end ofWheeler Creek trail). The run is 5K, and cuts off midwaythrough Green Pond trail.

2015 XTERRA USA CHAMPIONSHIPS PRO RACE PREVIEWIt all comes down to this. The XTERRA USA Championshipnext Saturday, September 19, in Ogden, Utah will determinethis year’s National Champions and XTERRA U.S. ProSeries winners.

There is a lot to be excited about for off-road triathlon fanswith compelling match-ups in both the men’s and women’selite races. The headliner in the men’s race is Josiah “BeastMode” Middaugh, a 36-year-old from Eagle-Vail, Colorado. He has been the grimacing face of XTERRA in the U.S. formore than a decade now and has 10 XTERRA NationalChampionships to prove it.

He enters the race as the points leader and two-timedefending champ of the U.S. Pro Series, and winner of thelast two regionals at the East Championship in Richmondand Mountain Championship at Beaver Creek.

Since Nationals moved to Utah in 2009 Middaugh has beenin the top three at every race and took the title outright in2012. To repeat that performance he’ll have to get past adetermined Kiwi named Braden Currie, a world-class moun-tain biker named Todd Wells, and the top six ranked men inthe Pro Series.

“The USA Championship always draws people out of thewoodwork and I am excited to see a very strong start list,”said Middaugh. “Braden Currie is always a tough competi-tor and self-proclaimed that one of his goals was to win theUS series. There is a group of about five or six strongAmericans that all have a shot at the podium. I am alsoexcited to see Brian Smith back in the mix and the wildcardwill definitely be the Olympian and National Championmountain biker Todd Wells. This should be exciting racingall around.”

For Currie, a Red Bull sponsored athlete that made a namefor himself as one of the biggest stars in adventure racing, the goal from day one this year was to win the XTERRAUSA Title, Pro Series, and World Championship in thatorder. He proved he could race with and even go fasterthan Middaugh in a thrilling toe-to-toe race he won at theSoutheast Championship in Pelham, Alabama in May.

Since finishing third behind Middaugh and Ben Hoffman atthe Mountain Championship in July, Currie placed 2nd toTim Don at 70.3 Ecuador, was top 10 at Timberman a weeklater. Here he explains how his build-up to Utah has been…

“Training has been going well. I took on a new mountainbike coach three weeks ago. He just coached Anton Cooperto win the under 23 Cross country world champs. I havemade some huge progress on the bike since then and I’mfeeling excited about seeing how that transfers to the race. The USA XTERRA Championship course is well designedfor me. I like to climb on the bike and the course looks fastand flowing. I have been riding with good riders in Canadaso I think my technical skills on the downhill should haveimproved since Beaver Creek. My running is back in formand I have climbed quite a few peaks around the Rockiesover the last few weeks whilst living in Alberta, Canada. Thisis how I like to train and I’m hoping this sort of prep work willplay out for me as it has in the past when it comes to raceday. It will be great to have a race where I feel strong in allthree disciplines and I am looking forward to racing Josiahin form. It will be my last race in the USA and then I will flywith my family back to NZ, after having 5 months in NorthAmerica. We are looking forward to getting home and I amlooking forward to the final XTERRA build of the year, towards the XTERRA World champs.”

As for Wells, an unknown in XTERRA but absolute legendin mountain biking, he said he’s just “hoping to surviveswimming in a wetsuit and get to the finish line.” Awfullymodest for a two-time Olympian and winner of a ton ofmajor mtb races and there are more than a few people outthere who think he has a legitimate shot at taking the tape.

While Middaugh, Currie, and Wells grab the headlines thereare a wealth of fast racers in the field who could make somenoise themselves. Guys like Chris Ganter, Branden Rakita,Ryan Ignatz, Olly Shaw, Brian Smith, Matt Lieto, andAndrew Russell have all proven themselves through theyears and are capable of coming up with big performances.

2015 XTERRA USA CHAMPIONSHIPS PRO RACE PREVIEWIn the women’s race Park City’s own Emma Garrard is inposition to win the USA Championship and the Pro Series inone fell swoop next Saturday.

With Suzie Snyder still recovering from a fractured pelvisand no Flora Duffy or Lesley Paterson in the line-up,Garrard is the clear-cut favorite in the women’s elite race. For Garrard, who has finished 2nd to those three at fiveraces this year and all eight regional championship eventsover the past two seasons, being labeled the favorite is justfine.

“I've done the training, it will just take me having a goodclean race and being healthy,” said Garrard. “I do not knowwhat Suzie has been able to do training wise but I imagineshe has lost some fitness. I hope she is healed enough torace. Sara is a strong climber and runner and usually comesout of the water in front of Jaime and Maia but they are alsostrong on the bike. It would be really special to win this racebecause it is in Utah but also having placed 2nd in everyregional race for the past two seasons! This would be therace to win for me. It's also special because 10 years ago Iwatched my first XTERRA, so I would be thrilled to win boththe pro series and the USA Championships, as it was some-thing that never crossed my mind that day, but this year it ispossible so I hope the stars align!”

Sara Schuler of Boulder, Colorado, who like Garrard has atoddler to take care of along with a full workload, is also hop-ing for some magic next Saturday.

“To come out on top I will need to have a solid race in allthree legs,” said Schuler, who placed third at the MountainChampionship in July. “I've been swimming in a faster lanethan I ever have so that bodes well for a good swim. I knowI am capable of riding and running with Emma and will needto keep her in sight on the bike and push hard to try and getahead before the run. I think the race will come down to whohas more left in the engine on the run and we all knowEmma has some speed and power in her legs. Historically,I have struggled on the run at Nationals but I'm runningmore than ever and doing "real" workouts thanks to coach-ing by Josiah Middaugh. To come out on top would be theoptimal end of my XTERRA career. This is my last year bal-ancing being a mother, wife, social worker and 3-sport ath-lete so being on top with my family watching would be anideal way to finish my last XTERRA Nationals. I haven'tbeen getting up at 5am (or earlier) all year for nothing! I'm

excited for the race and it is bittersweet knowing that it is thelast year I make the trek out to Snowbasin.”

In an interesting twist, men’s favorite Josiah Middaugh justso happens to be the coach for both Garrard and Schuler. We asked him what he thought of the looming showdown atSnowbasin between those two…

“Crazy right?” said Middaugh. “Actually, I haven't thoughtmuch about it. They are competitors, but also a lot of mutu-al respect there. My hope is that they both have the per-formances they are capable of and the results will sortthemselves. Both are super talented moms with busyschedules and I am excited to see them race their ownstrengths in Ogden.”

While Garrard and Schuler seem the favorites there are ahandful of elite women who have had breakout seasons thisyear and two months to fine-tune their endurance. Put MaiaIgnatz, Kara LaPoint, Catherine Sterling, and Jaime Bredein that conversation and the top five spots are certain to behotly contested.

Follow the elite race live on twitter @xterraoffroad,#xterraUTAH starting at 9am MST on Sept. 19.

MEET THE PROFESSIONALSIn Utah: Finished 6th last year, 7th in 2013, a career-best2nd in 2012, 9th in 2011 and 2010. On the line: Suzie is in 2nd position in the XTERRA U.S.Pro Series and only six points behind Emma Garrard butwill not be racing at 100%. Safe to say it would take aheroic effort to finish ahead of Garrard and steal the title. Thus, the more pressing issue is keeping her 2nd placeposition. Her closest competitor, Sara Schuler, is 66 pointsbehind. Hypothetically speaking, if Schuler won she’d endup with 298 points then Snyder would have to finish 12th(worth 37 points) to end up with 301 and keep her 2ndplace spot in the Series. The XTERRA America Tour is designed to provide age group athletes with a bona-fide championship to compete forwithin their geographic region. At the end of the regular season the top performers in each of eight regions are invited tocompete against other athletes their same age - but from different regions - at the national championship in Utah onSeptember 19 This year there are 70 races in 39 states across the country, as well as the U.S. Territory of Guam andCommonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands (Saipan). It marks the 19th straight year of expansion for XTERRA.

Here's how the Series works:1) CHOOSE REGION: There are 8 regions, determined by a competitor's primary residence at the time of their first race:

NORTHEAST (NE) - Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Rhode Island, Massachusetts, Connecticut, New York,ATLANTIC (AT) - Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Delaware, Maryland, Virginia, West Virginia, Washington D.C.SOUTHEAST (SE) - Tennessee, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Alabama, Florida, Puerto Rico, U.S. Virgin Islands.MIDWEST (MW) - Minnesota, Iowa, Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Ohio, Kentucky.SOUTHCENTRAL (SC) - Texas, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Kansas, Missouri, Louisiana, Mississippi, Arkansas.MOUNTAIN (MT) - Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota, Nebraska, Colorado, Utah, Wyoming.NORTHWEST (NW) - Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Alaska.WEST (W) - California, Nevada, Arizona, Hawaii, Guam, Northern Mariana Islands, Pacific Territories.

2) DETERMINE YOUR DIVISION/AGE GROUP: "XTERRA Age" is based on a competitor's age on December 31, 2013.Athletes compete in the following age categories: 15-19, 20-24, 25-29, 30-34, 35-39, 40-44, 45-49, 50-54, 55-59, 60-64,65+ (w), 65-69 (m), 70-74 (m), and 75+ (m), and we also have Physically Challenged Divisions.

Physically Challenged Division: There are two physically challenged age groups, 15-39 and 40+, and 6 categories:Below the knee amputee, above the knee amputee, below the elbow amputee, above the elbow amputee, blind and impaired/les autres.

3) RACE AND SCORE: Series competitors race for points at their choice of 70 events - including XTERRA Points Series(XPS) races & XTERRA Championship Series (XCS) races. Competitors can enter as many events as they'd like and theirbest four finishes count towards their total points score. Competitors are required to race in at least one event in theirregion, and must COUNT two events in their region. Note: You don’t have to race in two, but you have to count two in yourregion. Bottom line, to play the game (to qualify for nationals and win a regional championship) you have to race in at leastone event in your region, and everything more than that is gravy and increases your chances of winning.

4) COUNT ‘EM UP: Points are awarded to the top 15 finishers in each age group at each race. Athletes can earn morepoints at XCS races because, generally, participation is higher and the courses are tougher. If an athlete races at morethan one XCS event, only the best finish counts at full points. Any other finishes earn points at the same rate as an XPSrace. There are two points systems:

HOW THE XTERRA AMERICA TOUR WORKS CONTINUED...5) BECOMING A REGIONAL CHAMP: At the end of the regular season in late August, the athlete with the most points -by gender, by division, by region - earns the title of XTERRA Regional Champion. All regional champions and those thatfinish in the top 15 of their division at any XTERRA Points Series race qualify to compete in the USA Championship.

Note: All XTERRA America Tour events are sanctioned byUSA Triathlon, the national governing body of multisport inthe United States. As such all athletes are subject to the rulesand regulations set forth by the USAT. Details available atusatriathlon.org.

The XTERRA Points Series races are a collection ofindependently produced off-road triathlons owned andoperated by local promoters, while the Championship Seriesevents are bigger races with pro purses on full-lengthcourses operated by the TEAM Unlimited / XTERRA staff.

September 20, 2014 (Snowbasin Resort - Ogden, Utah)Ruben Ruzafa, 25, from Spain and Flora Duffy, 27, fromBermuda captured the 2014 XTERRA USA Championshipoff-road triathlon on a beautiful blue sky day at SnowbasinResort.

Ruzafa, the current and two-time XTERRA WorldChampion, finished in 2:21:47, less than one-minute aheadof runner-up and 2012 USA Champ Josiah Middaugh ofColorado who crossed in 2:22:32.

The difference was the bike where Ruzafa, a former nation-al team rider in Spain, posted the fastest split of the day in1:18:01, two-minutes faster than that of Middaugh who hadthe second-best bike time at 1:20:00. Even thoughMiddaugh ran one-minute faster, it wasn’t enough to reel inRuzafa.

Middaugh still won the XTERRA U.S. Pro Series for the sec-ond straight year and was the XTERRA National Champ(top American) for the 10th time.

In her first full season racing XTERRA Flora Duffy has beendominant. She won all three regional championships andnow the USA Championship. She posted the fastest swim(coming out of the water third overall behind only Ben Allenand Mauricio Mendez), had the fastest bike split (1:32:36)and the second-best run behind eventual runner-up BarbaraRiveros from Chile to take the tape in 2:38:18.

“It was a lot of fun, but it was hard. I never felt particularlystressed with my breathing but my legs were shot,” saidDuffy, a two-time Olympian. “I was intimidated by thiscourse, but apparently it suits me. The water was warm, butswimming at altitude is hard”

2014 XTERRA USA CHAMPIONSHIP - AMATEUR RACINGJP Donovan and Hannah Rae Finchamp captured the over-all amateur XTERRA USA Championship titles today. It’sthe third time Donovan has won Nationals, but his first over-all victory, while it’s the second overall title in three years forFinchamp (who has now won the 15-19 division fourstraight times).

“It feels really nice to take the title back,” said Finchamp, who is in her freshman year at Lindenwood University in St.Charles, Missouri. “I felt really smooth and really goodtoday, maybe more physically ready than ever because I’vebeen training with the collegiate teams and it has been somuch fun being with other people training. It does take atoll on you mentally, however, having to come all the wayfrom Missouri and flying by the seat of my pants.”

Finchamp is on the cross country, cycling, and swim teamsat Lindenwood this season, and said “I love it there, nowhere else I’d rather be for school.”

There was an interesting twist in the men’s race as MatthewBalzer, the reigning USA Champion, looked poised to cap-ture his second straight until another guy – wearing thesame kit – stormed past. And it was his fault.

“I’ve got to give thanks to Matthew Balzer from the RenoRunning Company,” said Donovan, 27, a lifeguard fromIncline Village, Nevada who has been racing XTERRAsince 2006. “He hooked me up with a kit, drove me outhere, and really pushed me to train the last couple weeks.I wasn’t even going to do it this year but he conned me intoit. While he’s not my coach, he is in my mind, kind of likethe conscience on my shoulder.”

The two came into transition close together but Donovancharged hard on the first steep incline out of transition andnever looked back.

“I wouldn’t want to give it up to anybody else,” said Balzer, who finished second. “At least we got the kit involved.”

Cindi Toepel from Littleton reached a milestone mark today, winning her unprecedented 10th XTERRA USAChampionship crown.

David Rakita, father to XTERRA pro Branden Rakita, wonhis 5th title (he got his first in 2002).

2013 XTERRA USA CHAMPIONSHIP - AMATEUR RACINGThe XTERRA USA Championship is not just about profes-sionals. In fact, the age-group competitors make up thebulk of the field, and the two winners of this year’s race epit-omize the amateur spirit.

Matthew Balzer from Reno, Nevada, was the top overallamateur with a time of 2:49:50. He finished 12th overall, topped only by 11 established professionals. “Ecstatic,”said Balzer, 32. “It’s been a goal for the last two years. I hadto deal with some (foot) injuries last year, so I really wantedto come out strong this year.”

Balzer,, a former professional triathlete, took the lead in theamateur field early in the bike leg and stayed in front therest of the way. He said he figured he was in a good posi-tion when he saw only the professional competitors withhim in the bike-to-run transition. Despite the impressive vic-tory, Balzer said he has no intention of returning to the pro-fessional ranks. He already owns two businesses in Reno– the Reno Running Company and MMS West (a mail-ing/shipping company). He also has a wife and two youngdaughters (8 and 5 months).

“I have an amazingly supportive wife and two young girls,so I’m happy with where I am,” he said.

Cole Bunn, a 17-year-old high school student fromBettendorf, Iowa, was the second amateur with a time of2:51:11. He came in right after Balzer, good for 13th over-all. John Mezger from Colorado was third in 2:53:57, andBryce Phinney from Arizona was fourth in 2:57:15.

In the women’s amateur race, Elizabeth Gruber fromRedding, California, took top honors with an all-out effort. She finished in 3:11:13, and rallied from a deficit of morethan four minutes out of the swim.

“I had no idea I was in first,” she said. “I was in the medicaltent for more than an hour after the race, and I didn’t knowwhere I placed.”

Gruber, 23, was 12th overall among all females, and col-lapsed after crossing the finish line and needed fluids toreplenish her body. “I think it’s still unreal,” she said. “I don’tknow if it will ever hit me.”

September 22, 2012 (Ogden, UT) - Josiah Middaugh ofColorado and Lesley Paterson from Scotland earned long-awaited victories at the XTERRA USA Championship at theSnowbasin Resort near Ogden, Utah.

Middaugh was the overall winner, breaking a string offrustratingly-close performances in this event. Patersontook the women’s title after back-to-back runner-upshowings in 2010 and 2011.

Conrad Stoltz of South Africa placed fourth, but earnedenough points to win his unprecedented 10th XTERRA U.S.Pro Series championship. Paterson captured her firstXTERRA U.S. Pro Series title in the women’s division.

Middaugh, 34, has been the top-ranked American male inthe XTERRA Series for seven of the past eight years, but

It’s the firsttime in an XTERRA race that I went into the lead on the bikeand held it. So I went into the run actually in the lead, whichis very unusual for me, so I think my bike is finally comingtogether.”

Today, everything justfell into place and God was with me every second.”

She placed eighth overall among all the females – less thana minute behind top British pro Jacqui Slack. Finchamp, 16and a junior at Maranatha High School in Altadena, Calif.,said she was not aware of her impressive accomplishmentuntil she approached the finish line and heard the crowd. “Ihad no idea,” she said. “I’m very surprised because allthese athletes are so great. We all work so hard and every-one’s goal out there was to have all their training pay offand it definitely did for me.”

September 24, 2011 (Ogden, UT) - There was a lot of hypeentering the 2011 XTERRA USA Championship, andNicolas Lebrun didn’t receive much of it. But when it was allsaid and done, the top off-road triathlete from Franceproved that the XTERRA USA Championship is a bit differ-ent from a Tour de France.

Lebrun rallied from a slow swim with the fastest bike split ofthe day, and then finished with a strong run to run off withtop honors at the XTERRA USA Championship atSnowbasin Resort near Ogden, Utah. It was his secondUSA title in the last three years.

“This is a very good race to win today,” said Lebrun, 38. "Ithink a lot of athletes knew that this morning. With moremedia, more people around, it would be a very big victory. So I am really happy to have my best race of the year here.”

Melanie McQuaid of Canada also had a very good race, andtook top honors among the women. It was McQuaid’s fourthconsecutive women’s USA Championship, and her fifthoverall. “Obviously, this race is good for me,” said McQuaid,38.

It was one of the most anticipated events in XTERRA histo-ry, mostly because of the XTERRA debut of Americancycling legend Lance Armstrong (pictured) – the seven-timeTour de France winner.

Armstrong, 40, was in third place for most of the race, butfinished in fifth overall. “At 40 years old, I guess I could havegone home and drank beer and played golf all day long,”Armstrong said. “But it’s cool to come out here and testyourself, and also just support a sport that I think is reallycool.”

Snowbasin Resort / Ogden, UT (September 25, 2010) –Conrad Stoltz from South Africa and Melanie McQuaid fromCanada won the grueling XTERRA USA Championship off-road triathlon on an incredibly beautiful fall day atSnowbasin Resort.

Stoltz, a two-time Olympian, completed the 1-mile swim, 19-mile mountain bike ride, and 6.5-mile trail run in 2:24:03, afive full minutes in front of last year’s race winner, NicolasLebrun from France. With the victory, Stoltz also won thesix-stop XTERRA U.S. Pro Series for the eighth time since2001, and took home $12,500 in prize money.

“I’m really, really surprised with my performance today,” saidStoltz. “I’ve said before that this is the anti-Conrad coursebecause there are 3,000-feet of climbing and not a whole lotof descending, and because I’m 180 pounds it is especially

challenging for me, but my legs felt amazing and theSpecialized 29’er I was riding was incredible, it just rolledover all the roots and rocks.”

Stoltz’ five-minute margin of victory was by far the mostdominating performance in the history of the XTERRA USAChampionship race, and his prowess on the mountain biketurned it into a race for second place early on.

Three-time XTERRA World Champ Melanie McQuaidhadn’t won a race in the XTERRA U.S. Pro Series all year, until today, perhaps the result of a focused year-longtraining plan specifically designed to peak for this race andnext month’s XTERRA World Championship. “I feel like I’vegot something brewing,” said McQuaid. “I’ve gotten theones I wanted – the XTERRA European Championship inItaly, the XTERRA Canada Championship, this one.”

Snowbasin Resort - Ogden, Utah (September 26, 2009) -Nicolas “Nico” Lebrun chased down the defending champConrad Stoltz during the last quarter of the run whileMelanie McQuaid held off a hard-charging ShonnyVanlandingham to capture the men’s and women’sXTERRA USA Championship titles on an absolutely epicday in Northern Utah’s Wasatch Range.

“I felt really strong on the run,” said a jubilated Lebrun short-ly after he crossed the finish line. “It’s a very big day for me.I’ve come to the U.S. four times before for this race andhave never been very good. This course was perfect for me,and I had a lot of confidence coming into it,” said the 2005XTERRA World Champ who grew up climbing around skiresorts in the French Alps.

“Maybe for the first time ever I’m content with second,” said

Stoltz, who with the finish secured an unprecedented 7thXTERRA U. S. Pro Series title. “Considering the injuries Ihad this year and my sketchy training as a result I’m veryhappy to keep it all together and still win the series. Plus,Nico is just a Billy goat, and he was the strongest guy outthere today.”

The three-time XTERRA World Champ came out of thewater more than three minutes behind Christine Jeffreyundaunted, and by midway through the bike had a twominute lead on Jeffrey, Sara Tarkington, and ShonnyVanlandingham. At the awards ceremony McQuaid spokefor the entire field when she said, “the people andvolunteers here in Utah are crazy amazing. The hospitalitythey show is insane, they’re just so happy to have us and Ican tell you we are happy to be here. I can’t imagine afunner place to enjoy the end of the U.S. series.”

XTERRA TRAIL RUN NATIONALS PREVIEWThe reigning XTERRA Trail Run National Champion BrettHales from Layton, Utah is returning to defend his half-marathon national title at Snowbasin Resort on September20th, but will be up against fierce competition in the form offamiliar foe and two-time XTERRA Trail Running WorldChampion Patrick Smyth of Salt Lake City.

“Pat is a fierce competitor and a great tactical runner,” saidHales, a former track and cross country stand-out at nearbyWeber State University. “He knows what his strengths andweaknesses are so he capitalizes when and where he can.”

Smyth, who won the 2013 XTERRA National Title in Utah, was equally complimentary of Hales.

“I’ll have my hands plenty full with Brett running,” saidSmyth, himself a former standout cross country runner atthe University of Notre Dame before turning his sights totrail running and becoming one of America’s best. “I'm psy-ched about returning to XTERRA Nationals! It doesn't getmuch better then Snowbasin in late September for trail run-ning, and I'm looking forward to regaining my U.S. Nationaltitle and get some good momentum going into Worlds inHawaii!"

Hales is equally excited and echoes what Smyth said aboutthe course at Snowbasin truly being the star.

“After last year’s XTERRA National Championship I wasmade a trail run fan for life,” said Hales, who did his first-ever trail race at Snowbasin last year almost on a whim.

“The euphoria that followed that race was awesome and I'mlooking forward to racing hard and running through theheavens once again. I must say that the Snowbasin venueis perfect for the event. The trails are well-groomed and setfor speed and the two separate vertical climbs challengeeven the more experienced trail guys.”

Hales and Smyth aren’t the only stars to join the line-up atthe XTERRA Trail Run National Championship, as thereigning women’s champion Liz Stephen, a two-timeOlympic cross country skier, is also set to return.

“It was a really fun race and his is a really fun course,” saidStephen after last year’s race. “Falling leaves and

XTERRA TRAIL RUN NATIONALS COURSEThe Snowbasin Resort near Ogden, Utah, has alreadyserved as the host site for world-class sporting events, including several of the skiing competitions at the 2002Winter Olympics, and the XTERRA USA Championship off-road triathlon.

Now, the XTERRA Trail Run National Championship hasmade Snowbasin Resort its home.

With the snowfall still a month or so away, the changingcolors of the fall season and the majestic Wasatch Rangesurrounding Snowbasin Resort will provide the perfectbackdrop for the 2013 XTERRA Trail Run Nationals.

The elevation and terrain of the Wasatch Mountains willmake the course breathtaking in more ways than one.Runners can expect to face more than 2,200 feet of totalclimbing over the 21-kilometer championship course, andthe peak of the trail will reach an elevation of approximate-ly 7,300 feet.

The course can basically be broken down into two sections:the first “loop” will feature some gradual climbs with sometechnical single track; the second “loop” features severalgrueling uphill climbs and fast descents.

Richard Burgunder, an XTERRA Trail Run Ambassadorfrom Colorado, participated in the XTERRA Trail Run

National Championship at Snowbasin Resort in both 2011and 2012. He described the course as both bold andbeautiful:

“The XTERRA Trail Run Nationals 21K course providesdiverse terrain that ranges from long climbs up fire roads torocky single track along the upper ridges of the mountain.Shortly after the fast start in the parking lot, runners will beimmediately challenged by a long climb up the mountain. The trails at this point will consist mostly of dirt fire roadsthat gradually take athletes to the top of the mountain. Theterrain along the initial climb isn’t too technical and most ofthe trails are relatively wide. As you run along the arête nearthe summit, you’ll experience more technical running withan abundance of rocks and narrower trails.

“Once you’ve ascended the summit, stunning panoramicviews allow you to take in the natural beauty that surroundsSnowbasin. You’ll be able to see for endless miles out intothe valley, which will provide a breathtaking backdrop of thefall foliage and crystal clear blue skies. After running alongthe upper ridges for a couple of miles, you’ll descend themountain on a long switchback ski trail that will provide anadrenaline pumping experience. It’s a long and fastdescend, which enables runners to open up and coast downthe mountain. After approaching the bottom of the longswitchback, runners will then blaze through a gently rollingtrail that is embraced with beautiful Aspens. The final pushto the finish will include a small, but very steep climb upanother fire road, followed by a downhill finish intoSnowbasin Resort.”

It should be noted that there are also 10-kilometer and 5-kilometer races at the XTERRA Trail Run NationalChampionship, but only the results from the 21K course willbe used to determine the national championships. The 10Kand 5K courses will follow much of the same trails as thefirst half of the 21K course.

Ogden/Snowbasin Resort, UT (September 21, 2014) – BrettHales made quite the first impression on Snowbasin Resortand the XTERRA Trail Run National Championship.

Although he lives in Layton - about 35 miles away fromSnowbasin – Hales had never raced on the picturesquetrails at Snowbasin until Sunday. All he did in his first XTER-RA Trail Run was win the overall National Championship.

“It was phenomenal, I loved it,” said Hales, 28, who wascompeting in his first-ever trail race. “Holy cow, that was soaddicting. Looking left and seeing the valley, looking rightand seeing the valley, it was unlike anything I’ve ever donebefore.”

Winning, however, is nothing new for the former track andcross country stand-out at Weber State University. Just lastSaturday he captured the Big Cottonwood half-marathon inSalt Lake City with a blistering time of 1:03:07.

“There was a lot of downhill in last weekends race so myquads were pretty tender all week so I was waiting to seehow my body would feel. Didn’t decide to do this until10’o’clock last night and I had no idea what to expect hav-ing never done a trail race. It was amazing. A little wind, lit-tle rain, critters running everywhere, and there were somany people in the race but I felt like I was the only one outthere.”

By mile 3.5 on the run it looked like Hales was the only oneout there as he had already established a commanding leadover eventual runner-up finisher Mario Mendoza from Bend,Oregon. Hales winning time was 1:18:18, more than six-minutes ahead of Mendoza. Nathan Peters came in thirdjust 10 seconds later.

THIRD TIMES A CHARM FOR STEPHEN

In the women’s race Liz Stephen, a two-time Olympic crosscountry skier from Vermont who spends her off-season inPark City, captured the elusive women’s championship titleafter two close second-place finishes on this course in 2011and last year.

Her winning time of 1:27:55 was more than two minutesahead of runner-up Kimber Mattox from Eugene, Oregon.

“It was a really fun race, and there was some fast women

out here,” said Stephen. “I wasn’t really sure how far up Iwas because it’s hard to see anyone else when you’regrinding through the single track on the uphills and thedownhill is so long you really can’t see anybody else unlessthey’re within seconds.”

Like Hales in the men’s race, Stephen got out front earlyand never looked back. She ultimately finished 5th overallbehind only four men.

“This is a really fun course. It was a beautiful day, and theweather was amazing,” said Stephen, despite the fact it waswindy, cold, and raining. “Last year was really hot so thiswas a nice change. Plus, I’m kind of a hot runner so I thinkconditions like this are just perfect. Falling leaves and spec-tators all around, I really love running here at Snowbasin.”

Ogden/Snowbasin Resort, UT (September 22, 2013) –Lindsey Anderson, who made her first visit to Snowbasinlast year and ran away with the title, successfully defendedher women’s XTERRA Trail Run National Championship. She is the second female runner to win back-to-back XTER-RA National titles, following Lauren Fleshman (2009/2010).

In the mens race Smyth didn’t just win the 2013 XTERRATrail Run National Championship, he dominated.

The former track and cross country star at the University ofNotre Dame raced to the lead immediately and never relent-ed. He completed the 21-kilometer course in 1 hour, 16 min-utes, 38 seconds, which is the fastest time since the eventmoved to Snowbasin Resort in 2011.

“I’ve been running 10K and 5Ks most of this summer, so Ididn’t know how long I could hold on,” he said. “I kind ofwanted to go out hard and see if I could break some peopleearly.”

By the halfway point of the course, Smyth had establisheda 30-second lead, and the only runner within striking dis-tance was Joseph Gray.

“He set the pace early and let people know it was going tobe on from the start of the race,” Gray said of Smyth. “Irespect him for that. He ran a great race.”

Smyth continued to build his lead during the second half ofthe course, and even had time to get up and recover from afall in the final two miles.

“I didn’t know who was behind me, but I kept looking behindme, expecting guys to come up,” Smyth said. “Around mile11 or 12, I started getting some cramps and fell and startedlooking back even more.”

Gray, who came over from Lakewood, Washington, for therace, finished second in 1:18:01. He was the co-winner ofthe 2012 XTERRA Trail Run World Championship in Hawaii, but this was his first experience running at Snowbasin forthe XTERRA Nationals.

“I’ve kind of been having some down time since the WorldMountain Running Championships, so I wasn’t ready to goout super-aggressive,” Gray said.

Karl Remsen from Leadville, Colorado, was third in 1:20:23,Mauricio Mendez from Mexico was fourth in 1:21:19, andNathan Peters from Salt Lake City was fifth in 1:21:29.

The women’s race turned into a duel from the start, withAnderson and Liz Stephen from Vermont running close toeach other – and away from the other women – for nearlythe first 20 kilometers.

“I was a little bit hoping we wouldn’t have to go out as hard,”said Anderson, 28. “But (Stephens) really pushed it andtook it out hard and she’s a really good downhill runner. Shewould gap me by about 10 meters on the downhills, then I’dcatch up on the uphills.”

September 23, 2012 (Ogden, Utah) - Max King fromOregon continued his amazing streak of XTERRA Trail RunChampionships with another amazing weekend.

King, 32, won the 2012 XTERRA Trail Run NationalChampionship for the fifth consecutive year at theSnowbasin Resort near Ogden, Utah. The XTERRA TrailRun National Championship 21K has been staged fivetimes, and King has won each one in convincing fashion.

“It means a lot,” he said. “I love coming back. This isactually one of the best courses for a trail run I’ve ever seen. It’s a beautiful course and XTERRA keeps putting on a greatrace. It’s a phenomenal event.”

On Saturday, he won the USATF 50K Trail Championship inhis hometown of Bend, Oregon. He got on a flight shortlyafter that race and arrived in Ogden after midnight onSunday morning.

“I didn’t get much sleep,” he said. “It was tough for me to gethere. But I got a couple of hours of sleep and got here readyto race.”

Perhaps familiarity with such a hectic schedule helped -- healso won those same two races on back-to-back days lastyear. “It felt just like last year,” he said. “This morning on mywarn-up it was tough, but once I got going and got my legsunder me, it was alright.”

King took the lead for good midway through the 21K course. He finished with a time of 1:22:12, which was 1 minute, 36seconds faster than the runner-up, J. Marshall Thomson.King said he knew Thomson was a good uphill runner, so hetried to push the pace before they hit the steep climb on thecourse called “Sardine Peak.”

Lindsey Anderson was the hometown hero in the women’sdivision. She placed 14th overall and was the top femalewith a time of 1:33:23. Anderson was a member of the 2008U.S. Olympics team for the steeplechase, and this was herfirst trail run.

“I’ve practiced on trails before, but this is my first race,” shesaid. “My coach told me to try this race and it was great.”

Anderson, 27, resides in Ogden and is regarded as one ofthe top distance runners in the history of the track programat Weber State University, which is located in Ogden. She iscurrently an assistant coach at Weber State.

A lead pack women ran together for the first half of the race, then Anderson and Kerri Lyons took the lead up the climb toSardine Peak. Anderson eventually broke away for the winand finished more than a minute ahead of Lyons (1:34:27).

“It was just a lot of fun,” said Anderson, who took most of thelast year off from training due to the birth of her daughter. “Iwould encourage anybody to do this.”

September 25, 2011 (Ogden, Utah) The trail runningkingdom of Max King continues to expand.

King (pictured) capped an amazing weekend of racing bywinning the 2011 XTERRA Trail Run NationalChampionship on Sunday, Sept. 25, at Snowbasin Resortnear Ogden, Utah.

It was the fourth consecutive XTERRA NationalChampionship for King, but his first at Snowbasin. Hisprevious three titles came when the event was held in hishometown of Bend, Ore.

He completed the 21-kilometer trail course in 1 hour, 17minutes, 59 seconds. King once again dominated the field, beating the other runners by nearly four minutes.

“I love my hometown of Bend, but this was, I gotta say, agreat course,” said King, 31. “It was a lot more climbing thanwe get in Bend, so this was tough.”

Making it even tougher, King was running on tired legs. Lessthan 24 hours before the XTERRA Trail Run NationalChampionship, King was competing in even longer state –and in a different time zone.

On Saturday, Sept. 24, King won the USA 50K TrailChampionship in Bend, Ore. In essence, the XTERRA TrailRun victory gave him two national titles in less than 24hours in two different states.

“You always have to think positive when you’re an athlete,so I was thinking positive that I could do it,” King said. “Itwas a matter of how your body holds up and how you feelafter the first (race).”

Fellow Oregon runner Mario Mendoza and Salt Lake Cityrunner B.J. Christenson pushed King for the first half of therace.

In the women’s division, Olympic cross country skiersMorgan Arritola and Liz Stephen showed that they are justas fast in trail running shoes. Arritola, who is from Ketchum,Idaho, captured first place, finishing with a time of 1:29:09.She took the lead early in the course and maintained it therest of the way.

“I kind of figured that climbing is my strength, and not so

much the foot speed so I thought that I’d kind of make somepeople hurt right off the bat on the (first) uphill and see whathappened,” said Arritola, 25. “But I still had no idea.”

It was the first XTERRA Trail Run for Arritola, but not her firstexperience with trail running. She won another national titlethis summer in Oregon.

Stephen, who is from East Montepelier, Vermont, made alate surge and finished second with a time of 1:30:54. “Itwas awesome,” said Stephen, 24. “I kept looking up at thepeaks and saying we’re still going up.”

Arritola and Stephen were teammates for the United Statescross country ski team at the 2010 Winter Olympics. Morethan 450 runners representing 30 states participated in therace.

BEND, Ore. (Sept. 18, 2010) – Light rain and heavycompetition were not enough to stop the reign of Max Kingat the 2010 XTERRA Trail Run National Championship.

King won the XTERRA National Championship race for thethird consecutive year, completing the 13.9-mile course in1 hour, 15 minutes, 57 seconds. King, who resides in Bend, used his knowledge of the course to break away from thefield late in the race.

“When you have good competition and you pull out a winlike that, it always feels good, mentally and physically,” saidKing, 30. “I tried to be relaxed in the first half of the race andsee if I could open it up in the second half to get the win, andthat’s what I did. It wasn’t easy. This was a very difficult winfor me.”

Lauren Fleshman, who is from Eugene, Ore., also relied ona late surge to win the women’s national championship forthe second consecutive year. Fleshman, 29, finished 10thoverall with a time of 1:24:24.

King’s third consecutive XTERRA National Championshipvictory was his closest. Fellow Oregonian Greg Mitchell andCalifornia’s Mario Mendoza pushed King the entire route.Mitchell, who is from McMinnville, finished second with atime of 1:16:52. The 55-second margin was the closest anyrunner has come to King at the XTERRA NationalChampionship race in the past three years. Mitchell had thelead for the first half of the race, but King passed him duringa flat section along the Deschutes River with around threemiles to go.

“The first half of the race I felt pretty strong so I pushed it,”said Mitchell, 37. “Then somewhere along the river, Max justcame on by like it was nobody’s business. You kind of figurethat Max is on a different level, but you never know,” Mitchellsaid. “It was fun to be right there with him most of the wayin a race like this.”

Mendoza, who is from Cambria, Calif., also held the lead fora brief stretch before settling for third place in 1:17:16.“I tried to stay with Max at the end there and kind of overex-tended myself,” said Mendoza, 24. “I would have liked sec-ond, but (Mitchell) he passed me.” Mendoza was also rac-ing for the first time in Bend, but it won’t be his last. He plansto move there next month to train on the numerous runningtrails. He said he will even seek the advice of King.

The women’s race was also supposed to be close, butFleshman turned it into a runaway by running away downthe stretch. For most of the race before that, Fleshman andMichele Suszek of Colorado stayed near each other. “I justtried to keep pace,” Fleshman said. “Then probably witharound 5 (kilometers) left , I really picked up the pace tomake it uncomfortable for the other girls in the race.”

Suszek finished in second with a time of 1:26:40.“She wasright behind me, then she got ahead at the 10-mile mark,”Suszek said of Fleshman. “Then we hit the flat stuff and shewas gone. I tried, but she’s really fast.”

More than 400 runners from around the world participatedin the race. Runners (besides King) to win age-group titlesfor the third consecutive year were Don Hildebrand (men75-79), Katie Caba (women 35-39) and Jessie Stratton(women 65-69).

Bend, OR (September 13, 2009) -A pair of professionalrunners from the Beaver State – 29-year-old Max King and27-year-old Lauren Fleshman - dominated the men’s andwomen’s races at the XTERRA Trail Run NationalChampionship half-marathon in Bend, Oregon.

King, a Bend local, won in 1:06:46, a full six minutes aheadof runner-up Ben Bruce (1:12:58) and more than a minutefaster than his own record time from last year's race.Fleshman won in 1:19:10, placed 5th overall, and finishedmore than two minutes ahead of the women’s runner-upand last year’s National Champ, Susannah Beck.

The victory is King’s third straight XTERRA Trail RunningChampionship win (he also won Nationals and Worlds lastyear) and it also marks the third straight time Bruce hasfinished 2nd.

“Ben (Bruce) went out really hard from the gun so it set agood pace for me, and from there I just tried to go reallyhard the whole time and be smooth through the technicalsections,” said King, a former steeplechase All-American atCornell University.

Bruce was able to stay with King through about the first 2.5miles but by mile five King had put a minute on Bruce andby the 8-mile turnaround he was leading by nearly two-and-a-half minutes. That’s about when the trail gets truly techni-cal, zigzagging on narrow singletrack along the river, andwhere King put even more distance on his long-time rival.

"Max was just in great form today and he pulled away fromme pretty early," said Bruce, a member of the prestigiousNike Oregon Track Club Elite team. “By about mile six hewas gone and I looked back and didn’t see anyone behindme so I just settled in, relaxed, and had a good time.”

Enjoying the trails and this "Central Oregon mountain townthat has it all" was a common theme, especially from thelarge collection of out-of-state runners.

“It was an awesome course, just beautiful,” said RichardBurgunder, a 30-year-old from Astoria, New York. “Thevenue is amazing and the river trail is epic. Plus, thepeople in Bend are awesome and the spectators that linedthe course were so supportive. There were a couple guyson bikes that rode alongside me for a little bit and reallymotivated me. It was neat, a real breath of fresh air.”

Lauren Fleshman from Eugene (originally from California) isa bona-fide superstar – a 5-time NCAA Champion and15-time All-American at Stanford University, 3-time Olympictrials qualifier, owner of a 14:58 5k, and a member of theNike Oregon Track Club Elite team.

“It was a tough course, my best distances are the mile and5k so this is pretty long for me, and I’ll run this distance fora long run once a week but I never try to run it hard and Inever try to run over crazy rocks and roots too often so itwas fun just letting it rip and hanging it all out there andrunning with some really good trail runners,” said Fleshman(pictured), who missed the Olympics by one spot in 2008.

The XTERRA Trail Run National Championship was the lastrace in a 50-stop U.S. Tour that hosts races in 15 states. There were 25 regional series champions from SouthernCalifornia to Georgia, Virginia and beyond that took part, and here’s a look at the 2009 National Champs:

BEND, OR (September 27, 2008) - Several hundredathletes from 21 states gathered at the upscale Old MillDistrict in Bend today for the fourth annual XTERRA TrailRunning National Championship on an incredibly beautiful, crisp and clear morning along the Deschutes River.

Outside Magazine called this the best trail running town inAmerica, and some of the fastest runners from around thestate of Oregon and across the nation came to put itsreputation to the test.

Ultimately the king of XTERRA trail running turned out to benone-other than Bend’s very own Max King (pictured aboveat mile 8). The local favorite set the standard high turningout close to five-minute miles for a winning 21km coursetime of 1:08:01. After just winning a six-day 125 mile racethrough the Rockies earlier this month and coming in sec-ond at the 2008 World Mountain Running Championshiplast weekend, King was able to use his hometown advan-tage to edge out steeplechase star Ben Bruce, 26, ofEugene, Oregon by just over a minute. Ryan Bak, 27, alsofrom Eugene and King’s teammate on the 2008 USA WorldCross Country Team, took third in 1:09:41.

“When I spoke to Ryan, he said he was just coming to dothe race for fun. Both he and Ben entered the race at thelast minute, but I knew they would be tough competition”King said.

Being from Bend, King was familiar with the course and wasable to run part of the upper track last night giving him agood feel for the twists and turns. “I love to run a course withtight curves. It might be because of my low center ofgravity” he joked. It was a close race for the first section, but at mile 3 Max took the lead and never looked back. When talking to Bruce and Bak, they said that as primarilytrack racers, “The course was more technical than theywere used to. Max was able to take the sharp turns andreally open up his lead.”

“It’s a great course and nice to show all these runners fromout of town what we have here in Bend and how you can gofrom this really cool downtown-type setting to forestedsingle track in just miles,” said King. “Today was beautifulin Bend, the trails weren’t dusty, just perfect. Bend is reallya great place for XTERRA to be, and I think that showedtoday.”

In the women’s race it was marathon specialist SusannahBeck, 40, who took home the women’s top prize with hertime of 1:23:07. This Eugene native “duked it out” for firstplace with Bend local Kami Semick, 42, who finished just 19seconds later. These two ultra trail runners battled eachother just six weeks ago at the USATF 50 Mile TrailChampionship in Crystal Mountain, Washington where Beckand Semick also took the first and second place.

This morning, it was an all out tug of war as Beck took thelead from the start giving way to Semick at mile six, andthen regaining the lead at mile ten to take the women’s title.2008 World Mountain Running Champion Lisa Nye, 40, ofBend, who was under the weather and only made it to therace by her children’s urging, came in third at 1:25:11.

HOW XTERRA GOT STARTEDIT REALLY STARTED in the late '80's. That's when Tom

Kiely (CEO of TEAM Unlimited - owners and producers of

XTERRA) was tasked with creating more publicity for the

Waikiki Oahu Visitors Association. His idea was sports TV.

"First, sports is part of our life blood in Hawaii, and second,

what looks good on TV? The beaches and the ocean,"

explained Kiely.

The concept was pretty simple. TV sports and

entertainment is one of the biggest industries in the world.

The travel industry is THE BIGGEST industry in the world.

Bring those two together in programming, and you've got

something big.

So he came up with the idea for the Hawaiian International

Ocean Challenge - a lifeguard skills competition that

attracted water safety specialists from Australia, New

Zealand, California, and of course, Hawaii. Then, he forged

a relationship with ESPN - the worldwide leader in sports.

In 1990 the Ocean Challenge was broadcast on ESPN,

and millions of viewers were exposed to the beauty of

Waikiki - the sun, sand, and crystal clear blue water of the

Pacific Ocean. Subsequently, this is where David "Kahuna"

Nicholas enters the picture - as "race director."

"So we get into producing the Ocean Challenge," says

Kiely. "And now I'm thinking I've got all these athletes and

TV crews and if it costs me this much to produce one show,

it'll cost less for another, and even less for a third."

ESPN approves two more shows (Waikiki King's Race and

Diamond Head Wahine Windsurfing Classic) and in 1991

TEAM Unlimited produces three events and three TV

shows. The concept is working, and Hawaii is reaping the

benefits of the outdoor exposure the shows are generating.

"So the next year (1992) we produced seven Hawaiian

Sports Adventure Shows…multiple segments, different

stories, great scenics, and 30-minutes of entertaining, good

fun stuff," said Kiely.

Those seven shows were in addition to the Ocean

Challenge and a few others televised events, including the

inaugural Tour O' Hawaii.

"Now that was a great event," said Nicholas - now the

managing director of the XTERRA Global Tour. "The Tour

O' Hawaii happened before professional cyclists were

allowed to compete in the Olympics so the top riders from

every country kept their amateur status so they could race

in the Olympics. We just missed Lance because he signed

with Motorola, but we had George Hincapie, Jan Ulrich,

Tyler Hamilton, and dozens of others. Looking back, the

field was a who's who of international cycling."

A few years later the Olympics allowed pros to compete,

road cycling in the U.S. was on the decline, and the Tour O'

Hawaii was no more. At the same time, however, mountain

biking was taking off. So in 1995, in addition to 12 other TV

shows and several events, TEAM Unlimited produced the

Hawaiian Mountain Tour.

In doing so Nicholas and mountain bike Hall-of-Famer

Dean Crandall established the rules and held the first-ever

mountain bike stage race. This is also where many of the

XTERRA greats first appeared. The likes of Ned Overend,

Shari Kain, Melanie McQuaid, Steve Larsen, Mike Kloser,

Leslie Tomlinson, and host of others were taking part in the

Hawaiian Mountain Tour. Now these races took place at

Kualoa Ranch on Oahu, where the Koolau mountain range

meets the ocean, and the story goes that after their races

the mountain bikers would ride down to the beach and jump

in the water. It sparked a thought…why not have a

mountain bike triathlon?

By 1996 TEAM Unlimited had produced more than 50

shows and sporting events, and while the idea of an off-road

triathlon was enticing - who'd pay for it?

Almost simultaneously, the Aston Hotel in Maui (now the

Wailea Marriott Resort) was shopping for a good idea for

their grand opening and the Maui Visitors Bureau was

looking for a new event that could tell a different story about

Maui's south shore because all the exposure up to that point

was golf. Well, what better way to show off the hotel and

south shore than 1) starting the race at this beautiful beach

in front of the sponsor hotel, 2) follow a race that covers 21

miles of terrain with two dozen camera's, and 3) put it on TV

for the whole world to see?

Add a phone call to Kiely from a friendly competitor in the

marketplace (to remain unnamed) inquiring on the very

subject of producing an off-road triathlon and you have all

the main ingredients for XTERRA's birth.

Kiely likes to define luck as the "intersection of

opportunity and activity." He recalls bringing Nicholas and

VP of Marketing Janet Clark into his office.

"Look, I said, so-and-so called me and said that they were

thinking about doing an off-road tri and if they do, then we're

forever second, so we have to be the first ones to do it. I

immediately called Aston and the MVB and said O.K., I've

got the idea, here's the thing, bing, bang, boom," said Kiely.

"And that's what got us started in XTERRA."
