or Jose, life has not always been

easy. Fortunately, the Behavioral Health Center of Nueces County has been helping him every step of the way.

He first received Early Childhood Intervention services at the age of two for a speech impediment.

After the passing of his mother, he returned to the center for services. His grandmother informed him about Community Based Training and the Day Habilitation programs. It has been five years now and Jose has met other individuals who are improving their lives. He benefits from counseling, transportation, and training.

Through Advance Employment Services he has also been able to find a job at Whataburger as an ambassador. “It is a magnificent job.” He met his fiancée at the Day Habilitation Center and proposed to get married in front of all his friends.

“My fiancée makes me feel better and supports me. It’s like heaven.”

They have been together for three years. “We enjoy doing what every couple would do chill, go to the movies and watch Netflix.”

“They helped me straighten out my life. If it wasn’t for them I would not be where I am now and would be lost. I feel like I am in heaven now.”

Early Childhood Intervention

“La Mariposa” provides support for adults with mental illness. Offerings include Whole Health and Wellness groups, exercise equipment, a computer lab and a library. The grand opening is set for Spring 2016.

The website (bhcnc.net/join) provides psycho-educational material to promote a healthy connection between mental and physical wellness. The content is written for parents, teens and kids in a way that reduce clinical jargon! The website provides information regarding mental health, coping skills, resources and events.

The goal is to reduce the stigma surrounding mental health and to create a positive on-line mental health community. Through a combination of social media, the JOIN website, and outreach we can bridge the gap between the community and available services.

of Nueces County – Turning Point. After years of threats and an abusive relationship she began to recognize effects of mistreatment.

“I would feel disconnected, have panic attacks, involuntary sleep movements and was afraid to be round people,” Jessica said.

Three years later, while working at an Italian restaurant, things began to improve. “I met my loving sweet fiancé at work.” He learned of her past and was very supportive in researching for videos of individuals with similar symptoms.

She was skeptical when referred to the Turning Point Program. “I had been to many places and for a long time I didn’t want to talk to anyone, but the counselor made me feel very comfortable.”

Counseling helped to reduce her sleep interruptions, paranoia, flashbacks and gave her freedom. “I am able to work now without scared feelings. Had I not found Turning Point I would be an angry, unhappy person and wouldn’t love myself if it wasn’t for the counselors here.”

Claire started working in the Early Childhood Intervention program in 1990 and continues to be an integral part of the program to help improve infants and toddlers social-emotional skills. By improving social-emotional skills it helps them improve other areas of learning, such as: requesting for their needs to be met, interacting with other todlers, and knowledge growth.

attles raged inside Robert that led him to make a conscious decision to get help.

“Before I came to Behavioral Health Center of Nueces County I was a completely different person,” said Robert. “I had tried many places but I like the quality of care and comfort here.”

Robert receives services from the Assertive Rehabilitation Treatment program. This program provides psychiatric services, medication management, case management, and skills training. “They have taught me how to understand what is going on in my head. The help is there and all you have to do is reach out and ask for it.”
