PV Site Assessor Training (PV 201)Participants in this course will learn how to perform a PV site assessment for a home or small business. The course will cover site assessment tools, load analysis, energy efficiency recommendations, array placement options, basic system sizing, cost estimates, and evaluating existing infrastructure on site. Participants will learn how to access online tools for analyzing the solar resource, calculating PV system performance, and researching available incentives.

PV System Design (PV 202)This course teaches the basic step-by-step process of designing a utility-interactive PV system. Example site assessments, PV system component design examples, and PV case studies will be used to learn about selecting equipment, system sizing, layout planning, array siting, and other design considerations. Heavy emphasis is placed on using the National Electrical Code.

PV Sales and Finance (PV 203)This course begins with participants learning various sales techniques used to approach potential PV system customers. Next, participants review basic financial concepts used to evaluate PV systems including cash flow analysis, return on investment, and present value of an investment. Then, participants learn how to determine the costs and benefits of PV system projects by us-ing a financial spreadsheet model to evaluate utility bill savings, cash flow, payback period, financing options, and program incentives. Participants will be provided temporary access to leading industry financial modeling software to gain experience with a variety of modeling tools, and learn to evaluate PV systems in terms of benefits to the environment and society. The course concludes with a practice financial assessment of an example PV system that includes predetermined design and financial specifications.

PV Design and Installation Lab (PV 301)This four-day course offers participants an advanced level of hands-on learning that will prepare them for field installations and other advanced courses. Participants will design, size, and select PV system components, and identify and interpret National Electric Code (NEC) articles that pertain to the installations. While working on a training roof, existing PV arrays, and portable labs, participants will learn safety procedures, system design and layout, component selection and specifications, electrical and mechanical integration processes, and troubleshooting techniques related to designing and installing battery-based and interconnected PV systems.

Craig ButtkeNorth Wind Renewable EnergyCraig manages solar electric system design, installation, and servicing activities for North Wind Renewable Energy and teaches PV installation courses with the MREA. He is a NABCEP Certified PV Installer, Journeyman Electrician, adjunct faculty at Mid-State Technical College, and has worked as a solar electric foreman in California.

Cris Folk Madison CollegeCris began teaching in 1982 for the U.S. Navy and has provided training ever since. He has been employed by Madison College since 1999, teaching electronics and industrial maintenance. He teaches PV and wind courses at the MREA, is an ISPQ Certified PV Instructor and has installation experience with solar thermal and photovoltaic systems.

Presentations and discussions will cover system types, heat storage methods and strategies, heat exchange methods, boiler and furnace integration, high-mass systems, system sizing, and large and split array collector mounting strategies.

Jenny HeinzenMidwest Renewable Energy Association Jenny is the MREA Training Coordinator and licensed Master Electrician in Wisconsin. She has a strong background in wind energy and also teaches some introductory PV courses and facilitates all of the MREA’s online courses. She’s on the Board of Directors for RENEW Wisconsin, participates in NABCEP committees, and helps run the annual Small Wind Conference in Stevens Point. She holds a degree in Career and Technical Education and studied Environmental Science and Policy at UW-Green Bay.

Featured CoursesSmall Wind Turbine Design and Construction (W 306)Attractive to tradespeople, educators, and the general public because of its multi-disciplinary nature (math, physics, electricity, woodworking, metal fabrication, welding, etc.), this course is hands-on training for designing and building a wind turbine. Participants will learn the principles of wind turbine design, safe and sturdy construction techniques, and requirements regarding towers, balance of system, troubleshooting, and maintenance.

Dan Bartmann OtherpowerDan Bartmann has lived off-grid in the Colorado Mountains since age three. He is the founder of Otherpower.com and co-author of Homebrew Wind Power. His articles and photographs have appeared in magazines like Home Power and Back Home, and his innovative small wind turbine designs have achieved worldwide recognition. Dan teaches and consults regularly across the U.S. and internationally for NGOs, educators, and homeowners.

Brandon NaylorTower Technologies LLC Unlimited Renewable EnergiesBrandon is the owner of Tower Technologies, LLC, which he formed in 2002 to service the wind and communication tower industries. Brandon is certified as a ComTrain Tower Safety and Rescue Instructor, Crosby Rigging Instructor, and OSHA authorized instructor for 30- and 10-hour courses. Brandon currently teaches Introduction to Tower Climbing and Safety and co-teaches additional renewable energy courses at the MREA.

When it comes to gearing up for work in the growing clean energy market, there are quite a few professional development options to choose from. The training may last a single day or two years, and you may earn a degree, certificate, certification, or a simple letter of completion. Costs also may vary widely from one training program to another as will the level of engagement expected of you.

There is currently no uniform standard for training in solar or wind, and, like most other emerging vocations, will probably remain diversified for some time. In this context, it is important to do your homework before jumping at the first training you see.

Throughout our 20 years of training experience at the MREA, we have come up with a few strategies you can use to make sure your training investment is adequately preparing you for work in the dynamic clean energy market. Whether you are spending $50 or $5,000, getting answers to the following five questions will help you spend your professional development dollars wisely:

1. Has the program earned accreditation? Accreditation ensures that the program meets a standard for quality and undergoes third-party review to maintain compliance and make continuous improvements. If a training program does not boast an accreditation, you will need to be more critical about the course design, evaluations, instructors, and content to ensure that you are getting what you pay for.

2. Do the instructors have real world experience?The best instructors will have relevant job-site experience as well as classroom experience. Field experience helps instructors stay current, giving them insight into the knowledge, skills, and abilities most valued by employers. Classroom experience is a good indicator that they know how to communicate and share that knowledge with you.

3. Will the training lead you toward an industry-recognized certification?If you are looking to be a PV installer, certification as a NABCEP PV Installation Professional is the industry standard. If you are looking to work in sales, NABCEP PV Technical Sales Certification is the leading certification. Whatever your interests, make sure you ask if the program is preparing you for industry certification.

4. Does the program have connections to industry? Industry can play a vital role in training through equipment donation, guest lecturing, sponsorship, and peer-review of materials. If you want the broadest exposure to the industry, be sure that your training program maintains a diversity of industry support. This is a good indicator that the program is in tune with the market.

5. Does the program provide examples of alumni putting their training to use?There may be no better indication of training quality than the testimony of both the alumni and their employers. A satisfied employer is a good indicator of the quality of the training program.

Clay has been instructing both PV and wind courses at the MREA for over ten years and is an IREC Certified Instructor™ for PV Installation Professional, and Small Wind Installer. Clay has a construction background gained from working in his family’s plumbing shop and working nine years as a commercial electrician on large construction projects. In 2009, KEEP named him the Non-Formal Energy Educator of the Year. Clay also received the 2013 IREC 3i Clean Energy Trainer of the year award.

The Solar Training Academy is a series of classes that will walk students through the PV design and installation process. Classes will be held one weekend each month, Saturday and Sunday, from January to May. Participation in the Solar Training Academy will also include opportunities to meet with professionals in the solar industry and take field trips. The Solar Training Academy will be offered in Milwaukee, the Twin Cities, and Normal, IL.

Upon successful completion of the Solar Training Academy, students will:

• Complete 63 hours of classroom training towards NABCEP PV Installation Professional and PV Technical Sales Professional training hours

• Qualify to sit for the NABCEP PV Entry Level Exam

• Qualify to sit for the MREA PV Site Assessor and PV Design and Sales Exams

Topics of this training will cover PV equipment selection, utility intertied and battery-based systems, batteries, mechanical and electrical integration, PV design, PV residential site assessment, National Electric Code, system commissioning, and solar financials.

Cost: $2,200

Price includes: learning materials, textbook, MREA Basic Membership, PV Site Assessor Tech Mentoring, NABCEP Entry Level Exam fee, MREA Site Assessor Exam fee. Non-refundable tuition seven days prior to the start of class. 100% attendance is expected from all students. No classes can be substituted.

• To sit for the MREA PV Site Assessor Exam, students will need to complete two practice site assessments outside of class.

Solar Training Academy TestimonialsStudents have good things to say about the STA

Jeff Hendricks took advantage of the convenient course schedule to improve his career while balancing family life in LaCrosse. Hendricks says, “It worked out great for me, my work, and my family. I use the knowledge I learned in my career as a Housing Planner, and it allows me to incorporate PV design into my projects in the design phase.”

Some students use the STA to sample the field. Robert DeLullo of Milwaukee explains, “I actually attended the STA to confirm that I had a legitimate interest in solar and should apply to an online renewable energy and sustainability systems degree from Pennsylvania State University. I really got

hooked on solar, and the knowledge I’ve gained, like industry practices, the solar resource or modeling with PV Watts, has benefited me during my college coursework.”

The course also offers the opportunity to build networks within the industry and advance careers. Will Gorrilla is a STA graduate and currently works in operations for Silicon Energy in Minnesota. He says, “If I had a candidate apply for a job and they were NABCEP certified, it would completely make them stand out.”

According to a recent Solar Energy Industries Association report, 2014 has been a good year for solar PV. Sales of residential PV systems nationwide rose 13% between the second and third quarters of 2014, and, in the third quarter of 2014, “for the first time ever, more than 300 MegawattsDC of residential PV came on-line in a single quarter.” The report forecasts that residential PV system installations are expected to grow 49% year-over-year through 2016, which is even more encouraging.

Clearly, more forecasted PV installations means more job opportunities in the solar industry. In fact, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts that employment of PV installers is expected to grow 24% through the year 2022, much faster than the forecasted U.S. average job growth rate. New job opportunities in the residential PV industry will be an ideal match for high school and technical college graduates, as well as for electricians, finance and marketing personnel, and engineers who are seeking new opportunities.

The key to getting PV systems installed is to understand how to finance and sell them to prospective customers. Recognizing this, the MREA has developed a PV Design and Sales Certificate Program, where prospective trainees learn how to design and finance a residential PV system. To earn the MREA PV Design and Sales Certificate, students take courses that include PV 203: PV Sales and Finance. This course not only provides information on utility rates, PV financing incentives, benefit-cost measures, and PV financing options, but includes access to the new MREA PV Finance Model, which was developed to complement this course.

After the coursework is completed, students then write a PV Design and Sales proposal and pass a qualifying exam to earn the Certificate. Once earned, students can then go on to earn NABCEP’s nationally recognized Technical Sales Certification while gaining experience through employment with a PV design and installation firm.

The MREA PV Design and Sales Certificate Program provides an effective path toward achieving skills and experience in PV Technical Sales. We look forward to working with you as you embark on this journey.

For many people, the most cost effective way to incorporate a renewable energy system into their home or business is to interconnect with the existing electrical grid. Historically quite reliable and relatively inexpensive in the Midwest, the grid has long been considered the “backup” or “energy storage” mechanism where customers can earn credits with the electrical utility by exporting their renewable energy, and paying the difference or net at the end of each billing cycle.

For some utility customers, this is no longer the best deal available, and using energy storage devices like batteries has become more attractive, especially with recent legislative actions in Wisconsin (and proposed elsewhere) that redefine net metering, increase fixed charges, and tax PV owners monthly per kW installed. For these and other reasons, there’s a growing market for renewable energy systems that employ battery storage for back-up power, to prohibit electron export, or to function entirely off-grid.

Battery-based systems are becoming more feasible with improvements in technology, less maintenance issues, higher life expectancies, and lower prices. Furthermore, with increased implantation of the “smart grid,” whole-house data monitoring systems, and exponential interest in electric vehicles, batteries in renewable energy systems are gaining popularity.

Batteries for Solar PV SystemsPV systems that employ batteries require significant design considerations. Whether using batteries to back up your utility grid or as the basis of a stand-alone, off-grid system, choosing the correct battery and sizing it correctly is challenging. CancellationsTo cancel a course you have registered for, email [email protected] or call the office at 715-592-6595. The following fees apply:

• Cancellation two weeks or more prior to a course: The registrant forfeits a processing fee of $25.

• Cancellation less than two weeks prior to a course: The registrant forfeits 50% of the tuition. Remaining tuition will be reimbursed to the course registrant.

MREA Code Training: Get installers and inspectors on the same page Code officials will encounter a wide variety of PV equipment, system types, and installation practices when permitting and inspecting PV installations. The MREA offers two-, three-, four-, or six-hour code classes that will keep Authorities Having Jurisdiction (AHJs) up to date on new and evolving code requirements. Through partnerships with training organizations and code official associations in seven states, the MREA has already reached over 300 electrical inspectors around the Midwest.

Consistent communication between PV installers and code officials can reduce the “soft costs” of installation associated with permitting and inspecting processes. Designed for installers, electricians, and inspectors, MREA code classes will give PV professionals the tools they need to streamline permitting processes, install code compliant PV systems, and avoid costly mistakes.

MREA code courses are recognized for continuing education credit hours by many Midwest state licensing agencies as well as the North American Board of Certified Energy Practitioners (NABCEP). Customized TrainingMREA delivers high-quality on-site training throughout the Midwest. Your organization can hire the MREA to deliver its IREC-accredited training at your facility. 2014 National Electrical Code Update for PV (PV 614)This four-hour class concentrates on changes made to the 2014 NEC, beginning with code reorganization and new definitions. The new “Rapid Shutdown” requirement will be discussed at length, along with changes in labeling, the new 1000-Volt limit for PV systems, as well as evolving grid interconnection requirements in Article 705.

NEC Requirements for PV Systems (PV 616)This six-hour course reviews 2014 National Electrical Code (NEC) requirements for PV systems, paying particular attention to Articles 690 and 705. This course is designed for code officials as well as PV installation professionals, and covers PV equipment listing and labeling requirements, circuit calculations, wiring methods, grounding, overcurrent protection, system labeling requirements, and common code violations.

Inspecting PV SystemsUpon request and at special events, the MREA also offers NEC PV training in two, three, and four-hour increments for electricians and inspectors:

Courses at the MREA are based on industry-approved task analyses, and are designed to satisfy the competencies and learning objectives listed for exams, licenses, certificates, and certifications available to renewable energy professionals.

Professional Credentials

The MREA Site Assessment Certificate Program trains individuals to provide site-specific renewable energy assessment and consumer education. The MREA trains renewable energy site assessors in the following residential technologies: Photovoltaics (PV), Solar Thermal, and Small Wind. The MREA’s Site Assessment Certificate Program is accredited by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) and the Interstate Renewable Energy Council (IREC).

The MREA Site Assessor Certificate provides skills training needed by professionals engaging consumers in renewable energy systems. Site assessors evaluate the energy consumption of a household or small business, as well as the solar or wind

resource at the location. They help clients understand system options and their benefits. They work with clients to recommend the site and size of the solar or wind system. Site assessors also estimate system production and costs, and identify available incentives and financing options.

Those who become trained PV site assessors by successfully completing the MREA Site Assessment Certificate Program are eligible for 18 NABCEP continuing education credits.

Professional CredentialsMREA Photovoltaic Design and Sales Certificate ProgramThe MREA PV Design and Sales Certificate is for learners interested in PV system design, ethical presentation and accurate analysis and projections of the energy, environmental, and financial performance of PV systems. Learners interested in careers such as inside or outside sales person, application engineer, financial or performance analyst, or site assessor should consider MREA's PV Design and Sales Certificate. This certificate can then be used to meet the educational competencies for the NABCEP PV Technical Sales Certification.

National Board of Certified Energy Practitioners (NABCEP)The NABCEP Entry Level Program is designed for those individuals wanting to get into the solar field; achievement of the NABCEP Entry Level Exam is a way for candidates to demonstrate that they have achieved a basic knowledge of the fundamental principles of the application, design, installation, and operation of photovoltaic (PV) and solar heating systems.

Upon completion of the courses taught in accordance with the NABCEP Entry Level learning objectives, and prior to taking the NABCEP Entry Level Exam, participants should have demonstrated a basic understanding of the principles outlined in the learning objectives. The learning objectives for the exam are available at www.nabcep.org.

Individuals passing the NABCEP Entry Level Exam should not be confused with NABCEP Certified Installers. Taking the classes and passing the exam does not qualify an individual to install systems.

NABCEP currently has entry-level exam programs in PV and solar heating. The MREA is a NABCEP Entry Level Exam Provider for PV and solar heating.

PV Entry Level ProgramThe NABCEP PV Entry Level Program is designed for individuals who want to get into the PV field. The MREA is a registered NABCEP PV Entry Level Exam Provider. Those who successfully complete Basic PV (PV 101), PV Site Assessor Training (PV 201), and PV System Design (PV 202) – or the MREA Solar Training Academy – are eligible to take the two-hour exam, either at an approved MREA training facility or online.

PV Installation Professional Certification, NABCEP PV Technical Sales Certification, and Solar Heating Installer CertificationThe NABCEP PV Installation Professional, PV Technical Sales, and Solar Heating Installer certifications are voluntary certifications that provide a set of national standards by which solar professionals with skills and experience can distinguish themselves from their competition. Certification provides a measure of protection to the public by giving a credential for judging the competency of practitioners.

Interstate Renewable Energy Council (IREC)In the 1990s, experts in the fields of renewable energy, education, training, and accreditation worked to create ISPQ Standard 01022:2011, which laid out the requirements for training programs and the certification of trainers in the renewable energy, energy efficiency, and distributed generation fields.

In 2013, the Standard was revised to more clearly differentiate between accreditation (the organization) and certification (the person). IREC Standard 01023 addresses accreditation of training providers, while Standard 01024 pertains to instructors.

The MREA is an IREC Accredited Training Provider that provides courses and programs for PV and solar heating professionals. The following MREA courses are accredited by IREC:

• Basic Photovoltaics (PV 101)• PV Site Assessor Training (PV 201)

In addition to our accreditation, many MREA instructors have received their Instructor or Master Trainer certification through IREC (formerly ISPQ).

In 2012, the MREA’s Photovoltaic and Solar Thermal Site Assessment Certificate Programs received accreditation under ANSI-IREC for training/education programs within the energy efficiency and renewable energy industries. The MREA was one of the first three organizations in the country to earn this accreditation.
