Welcome to the University of Maine!
The 2015 Nor’easter Bowl is a regional competition of the National Ocean Sciences Bowl (NOSB). This event is co-‐sponsored by the following institutions of higher education. The University of Maine School of Marine Sciences, with more than 50 faculty, is the largest concentration of marine expertise in Maine and offers one of the largest programs in the Northeast. The School’s academic programs include marine science, aquaculture, marine biology, oceanography, and marine policy. The Semester-‐by-‐the-‐Sea, a unique in-‐residence program at the Darling Marine Center, provides intensive field experience for marine science majors. House on 170 acres in the Damariscotta River Estuary, the Darling Marine Center is the marine laboratory of the University of Maine. With nine resident faculty, research vessels, seawater laboratories, and electron microscope facilities, the Center functions year-‐round as a research and education facility serving faculty, stall, students, and visiting researchers from around the world. The Maine Sea Grant College Program supports marine science research and outreach activities to promote the understanding, sustainable use and conservation of ocean and coastal resources. Based at the University of Maine, our coast-‐wide program works in partnership with marine industries, scientists, government agencies, private organizations and a wide range of marine resource users. Maine Sea Grant is part of the National Sea Grant College Program, a network of 30 programs in each coastal and Great Lake states. The University of New Hampshire and NH Sea Grant is home to UNH’s marine programs in marine biology, oceanography and ocean engineering, and has three marine laboratories: The Jackson Lab, the Coastal Marine Lab and the Shoals Marine Lab. UNH Sea Gran Docents volunteer their time to deliver marine education. The University of New England, with campuses in Biddeford and Portland, is an independent university with degree programs focused on health and life sciences. UNE’s Marine Science Education and Research Center provides students, faculty and visiting researchers with a window to the sea. The center is the only facility of its kind and contains two state-‐of-‐the-‐art flow through sea water teaching laboratories as well as a lab dedicated to aquaculture and marine biology research. Maine Maritime Academy is an international leader in maritime studies. The newer programs address today’s needs and tomorrow’s concerns regarding energy production, international business practices and the ocean environment. Their academic programs are designed and managed by faculty from diverse academic backgrounds, from industrial positions in engineering, shipping operations, marine science, maritime management, and small vessel design and operation.

Seeding for Afternoon Rounds
-‐ All teams will advance to the afternoon rounds and will be ranked based on the results from the morning round robin.
-‐ The top ranking team takes the 1 seed. In the case of a tie, the team that scored the greatest number of points during the round robin will receive the higher ranking. If there is still a tie, the team captains will flip a coin to see who receives the higher ranking.
-‐ Pairings are set up so that if seeds 1 and 2 won all of their rounds, they would meet in the finals.
-‐ When a team loses a match during the single elimination rounds, they are eliminated from the competitions.

As part of the National Ocean Sciences Bowl (NOSB) program’s continuing effort to recognize individual achievement as part of the NOSB program, the Consortium for Ocean Leadership offers the National Ocean Scholarship Program. This scholarship program is to provide tuition assistance for NOSB students who have an interest in pursuing an ocean or a marine related topic area in their post-high school education. Criteria for the National Ocean Scholarship Program All applicants for the National Ocean Scholarship Program must meet the following requirements:
x Participate in the National Ocean Sciences Bowl at least once during their high school career x Pursue a career goal in the ocean sciences or a marine-related field x Demonstrate academic success and integrity throughout their high school career x Be scheduled to graduate high school in the spring of 2015
Application Process for the National Ocean Scholarship Program Qualified students are required to submit the following materials:
x Completed application - available on the NOSB website at www.nosb.org x Official High School Transcript(s)
NOTE: If the student’s GPA is NOT on a 4.0 scale, the student MUST provide a conversion to the 4.0 grade scale signed by their high school principle or counselor

Consortium for Ocean Leadership Attn: Melissa Brodeur / National Ocean Scholarship Program
1201 New York Avenue, 4th Floor Washington, DC 20005
Decisions will be made by mid-June 2015, and all applicants will be contacted whether or not they receive funding. An outside review team of educators, university scientists and marine agency professionals will evaluate all applications. Selection will be based on evaluation of transcripts, SAT scores, recommendation letters, essays and overall expressed interest in marine and coastal science. Funding is dependent upon attending an institution of higher learning. NOSB VOLUNTEER TRAINING: COMPETITION OVERVIEW
LEVEL 1 Updated 9/20/10
OFFICIALS Moderator: Asks the questions Science Judge: Rules on answer acceptability Timekeeper: Keeps the game clock Scorekeeper: Tallies up the scores Rules Judge: In charge of procedure TYPES OF QUESTIONS Toss-up questions are multiple choice questions read out loud to the teams and answered by the first player to buzz in, after the player is verbally recognized by the Moderator. If the answer is not acceptable, the Moderator gives the other team the opportunity to answer. When a team answers a toss-up correctly, a bonus question, typically a short answer question or more complex multiple choice question, is read out loud to that team. Team members may consult with each other for 20 seconds before answering their bonus question, but the team captain has to be the one to give the answer. Questions are multiple choice or short answer. The Team Challenge Questions (TCQs) are team based critical thinking questions that are given on paper to each team twice during a competition round. The students have 2 to 5 minutes to complete each question. Team members are encouraged to collaborate and anyone can fill in the answer sheet, but only the copy handed in by the captain is accepted. ANSWERS Responses can be the letter (W, X, Y, or Z), or the answer exactly as presented in the question, or both. Anything else is unacceptable, including synonyms, broader terms, and more specific terms. The first answer stated is the one that counts. PLAYERS Each team will be represented in matches by three players and a team captain. At the half of a match, other players and captains rotate in. WHEN DO PLAYERS USE THE BUZZER? The buzzer is used only for toss-ups. Players can buzz in while the question is being read or afterwards.
TYPES OF ANSWERS & POINT ALLOCATION The student that buzzes in first, is recognized by the moderator, and gives the: Correct Answer = +4 pts Incorrect Answer = 0 pts If the student interrupts the moderator by buzzing in before the question is completely read, but is recognized and gives the: Correct Answer = +4 pts Incorrect Answer = -4 pts (When answered incorrectly, the question is then reread to the other team) If the student blurts out the answer (is not recognized by the moderator) they receive: 0 pts (If question was not read in its entirety, it is reread to the other team.) If the student answers the toss up question correctly, the team is then asked a bonus question worth: +6 pts TCQs are worth: 0-20 pts (Partial credit is given) COMPETITION STRUCTURE & TIMING 2 Buzzer question sections (6-min. halves) 2 Team Challenge Questions (2 to 5 min) 2 minute break given between halves 5 sec. after toss-up question is read to buzz-in. 3 sec. from being recognized to answer 20 sec. from reading bonus to answer. CHALLENGES & WARNINGS Players may “challenge” the Moderator’s decisions on game answers as well as the rules. The Science or Rules Judge will make a ruling or will take the challenge to the Judges’ Appeals room. No challenges are allowed on Team Challenge Questions.
Competition officials may also issue warnings to individuals or teams for poor behavior. If a player or team receives two (2) official warnings that player or team will be disqualified from competing. WHERE CAN I GET MORE INFORMATION? Please visit our website: WWW.NOSB.ORG
