PERSONAL SKILLS

01/02/2003–

11/2007 PhD Researcher University of Worcester WR26AJ Worcester (United Kingdom)

The project aimed to assess the impact of pollen aerodynamics and weather conditions in sampling efficiency as well as searching for new application methodologies in automatic image recognition. In order to incorporate the resources offered by the two collaborating institutions I spent several periods of time during the duration of the project at the DWD labs in Freiburg, Germany.

The methodology designed for my thesis aimed to gather information from controlled environments such as laboratory experiments and wind tunnel experiments as well as from outdoor conditions. In order to perform wind tunnel experiments I obtained the collaboration of Dr. Alastair McCartney (retired) at the Rothamsted Institute, Harpenden-UK.

The outcome of this research has many applications in considering atmospheric particle transport, sampling methods, environmental characterization and data quality control. Furthermore, the aspects discussed through the thesis highlights important issues related to particle dispersion modelling and forecasting as they are related to health impact and agricultural performance. Also it has applications in order to validate sampling methodologies applied in studying the risk associated with the outcrossing of the GM trait into wild plant populations due to unrestrained release of GM pollen into the atmosphere.

I presented part of my thesis at the 8th International Congress in Aerobiology -Neuchatel, Switzerland. August 2006.

▪ Neuchatel, Switzerland. August 2006. 8th International Congress in Aerobiology. “A wind tunnel experiment to investigate the aerodynamic properties of pollen grains and the effects of those on their motion in air streamlines” Fdez-Sevilla, D.; Emberlin, J. and Schultz, E.

▪ Neuchatel, Switzerland. August 2006. 8th International Congress in Aerobiology. “A wind tunnel experiment to investigate the aerodynamic properties of pollen grains, and the effects of those in the relative collection efficiency of the Sigma2 passive sampler and Hirst type sampler for three different airborne pollen types (Gramineae, Ambrosia and Urtica)” Fdez-Sevilla, D.; Emberlin, J. and Schultz, E.

Business or sector Education

Laboratory Technician as part of the Aaerobiology Research Group of Prof. Victoria Jato at the University of Vigo (Campus of Ourense - Spain). Some tasks and responsibilities were aimed to analyse samples of atmospheric particle load to investigate the relationships between meteorological conditions, airborne spore concentrations and structural deterioration for the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela. The data obtained was published in the following article:

Aira, M.J.; Rodríguez-Rajo, F.J. & Jato, V. & Piontelli, E. (2006).- Análisis cuantitativo y cualitativo de la aeromicota aislada de la Catedral de Santiago de Compostela (Galicia, España). Boletin Micológico 21: 27-34

Other duties carried out through this period were to follow standardised methodologies at laboratory and on the field in order to produce reliable and precise datasets aimed to support scientific investigations of atmospheric particle load (pollen and spores). Furthermore, to perform identification and quantification of pollen and spores by microscopy, to use software tools in order to manage data sets of bibliographic and numerical nature as well as to perform statistical analyses to present to senior colleagues. Also, to keep up to date with technical developments, conducting searches on identified topics relevant to the research.

-Good communication skills gained through my experience as Market research analyst performing secondary research, interviewing established members of companies and institutions in Europe, Canada, EEUU and South America.

Also by participating in several International Congresses and Symposiums as Scientific researcher sharing results from scientific studies in oral presentations.

In addition to active collaboration in the organization of International Workshops, Symposiums and Conferences as PhD student (Worcester University UK 2003 TESLA), and as Marie Curie Fellow under the scheme "transfer of knowledge" (Poznan-Poland 2007 Monalisa meeting, Aerotop Workshop as well as Marie Curie fellow defender at the audit organised by the European Commission in Warsaw 2007).

Organisational / managerial skills

I have acquired the experience of good management of budgets and time lines from having the experience of organizing limited time, budget and infrastructure resources to accomplish the goals defined by the two International institutions which co-funded my PhD project (University of Worcester from UK and the German Weather Service). In order to fulfill the requirements demanded from both institutions (academic procedures, scientific standards and deadlines) it was necessary to design a very challenging agenda.

My skills increased being a Marie Curie Fellow with a position as Research Adjunct in the last year of a 4 years project under a “transfer of knowledge” scheme. This scheme was designed for the fellows to enhance communication and knowledge transfer between the host institution and the ones participating in the Marie Curie project. As a major result from my input in this scheme, two years after the project had finished, I contacted all institutions and people involved in the project and manage to present the abstract for the 4 years project: AEROTOP "Aerotop, Aerobiology to Poznan" at the Marie Curie Researchers Symposium: Science Passion Mission Responsibilities. Warsaw, Poland. 24th - 27th Sep 2011. Entities represented in this project were the Aerobiology Laboratory of Poznan (Poland) (Alicja Stach; Fdez-Sevilla, D.); The NPARU-UK (Prof. Jean Emberlin); University of Cordoba-Spain (Prof. Carmen Galán).

Further development of my organizational and managerial skills were gained from my position held at the Univ. of Vigo as Environmental Coordinator having set a number of goals and initiatives to be attended in a predefined contract period of one year.

Additionally, having worked part of a team as Market Research Analyst has been a plus enhancing my coordination and administration skills by creating and managing a extensive contact list of positioned people designed to help in accomplish project needs.

-Good abilities for synthetic and global views over concrete situations.

-End-oriented work capacity.

-Problem-solving attitude.

Job-related skills Technical experience designing and setting up experiments aimed to gather information to solve specific questions outdoors and indoors.

Among the techniques used in my career are:

- Data sampling.

Outdoors:

- Setting up of different atmospheric particle sampling methods: the Burkard spore trap (Hirst design of a volumetric sampler based on impaction), the GS050-3/C Low Volume sampler (filtration) and the Sigma2 (deposition).

- Setting up and data management. Meteorological stations at the NPARU in UK and Aerobiological Lab. at UAM, Poland.

Indoors:

- Setting up of Wind tunnel experiments held at Rothamsted Institute (UK) testing the influence of wind speed and direction over airborne particle sampling efficiency variations for several methodologies.

- Standardization of the aerodynamic sampling characteristics of the Sigma2 gravimetric sampler.

- Microscopy. Particle identification by bright field, fluorescence and dark field microscopy, digital image capture and mounting media testing.

- Testing filter performance for airborne pollen sampling and counting.

- Designing a new Mounting Procedure for a glass fibre filter with Glycerine Jelly.

- Designing a new methodology to measure number of pollen grains per gram of pollen.

Laboratory studies performed at the National Pollen and Aerobiology Research Unit located in UK (NPARU), German Weather Service (DWD-Freiburg), Aerobiology Department of Poznan University, Poland and University of Vigo, Spain.

Good capabilities to conduct elaborate assessments about the limitations of applied methodologies as well as to contribute to data review and quality assurance/quality control activities.

High level of performance in locating information relevant for the work of the group, finding connections, identifying synergies and implementing previous and recent research, reports and data sources.
