Your Trusted Advocate.
ad·vo·cate:nounnoun: advocate; plural noun: advocatesˈadvəkət/
1. a person who pleads on someone else's behalf. "care managers can become advocates for their clients"
verbverb: advocate; 3rd person presentˈadvəˌkāt/ 1. publicly recommend or support. “they advocated an ethical foreign policy”
Trust and advocacy are two important words in our business.
When blended together, the words “Trusted Advocate” can convey a
powerful message. For an organization to be a “Trusted Advocate,”
it has to have earned your trust through a proven track record of
success. Since the consolidation of the Alabama and Florida Leagues
in 2010, the LSCU has worked hard to reinvent the League and
demonstrate increased value of affiliation to credit unions in our two
states. We have significantly bolstered our advocacy function, as well
as compliance support and training. We’ve expanded our educational
offerings to meet the changing needs of credit union officials. Our
development and support activities for small asset size credit unions
and chapters are second to none. Additionally, we’ve returned more
than $1 million in dues rebates and patronage dividends to credit
unions in the last three years while holding the line on dues. The LSCU
& Affiliates is Your Trusted Advocate each and every day.

The LSCU sees advocacy as raising awareness of credit unions
among lawmakers, regulators, and consumers and educating credit
unions, filling needs for them, and helping them to better
serve their membership. In Montgomery, Tallahassee, and
Washington, D.C., the LSCU is looked upon as an industry
leader. In the past five legislative sessions, the LSCU has helped to
pass bills that will directly affect credit unions such as updating
the state credit union acts in both states, passing patent
troll legislation in both states, working to update data breach
laws in Florida, and right of redemption in Alabama. Lawmakers
now regularly contact the LSCU to get our opinions on
proposed legislation and amendments, as well as garner our
support. With 38 federal and 300 state lawmakers in both states,
no other trade association has the retail relationships with
Alabama and Florida lawmakers like the LSCU.

“The LSCU team is clearly in the top tier of government
affairs professionals that I have encountered. They
have figured out that their best resources and tools
lie in their members who are best positioned to
advocate for their interests.” Rep. Travis Cummings (R-Orange Park), an up-and-coming leader in the
Florida Legislature.
Regulation and compliance issues are two areas that can divert
credit union resources from serving their members well. The LSCU
clearly understands this, and it is why the League has dedicated
two staff members to support these areas. They provide regulatory
advocacy, compliance support, and training, and work to put
member credit unions in front of state and federal regulators
throughout the year. The League regularly sets up meetings with
the NCUA and CFPB for member credit unions during trips
to Washington, D.C., during the CUNA GAC, and Hike the Hill.
These meetings reinforce relationships that have been forged
over the years by the League.

“The LSCU’s governmental affairs team readily
assists me and my staff by providing context on
the cross-section of federal financial services policy,
the everyday needs of credit unions in Alabama
and Florida, and how policy and legislative action
impact our state’s credit unions.” Senate Banking Committee Chairman Richard Shelby (R-AL)
“The Florida Office of Financial Regulation is
committed to ensuring the safety and soundness
of Florida credit unions while encouraging a
climate for growth and progress. We look forward
to continuing our collaborative relationship with the
League on regulatory items that affect Florida’s credit
unions.” Drew J. Breakspear, Florida Office of Financial Regulation commissioner.
The League is raising credit union awareness through proactive
media relations that reach an average of five million consumers
every year or through the annual Cooperative Image Campaign that
has helped Alabama and Florida credit unions add 695,000 new
members in four years. The Southeastern Credit Union Foundation
focuses attention on credit unions through financial literacy
programing and training. Cooperative Initiatives is training the
next generation of advocates with the Young Professionals Group.
LSCU education expands advocacy through signature events
that help make managers better leaders and directors better
equipped to provide strategic direction in today’s complex operating
environment. The Southeast Credit Union Conference & Expo
has grown into one of the largest and best credit union
events in the country.
The LSCU Service Corporation (LEVERAGE) helps credit unions
