On March 4, we are hoping to take two groups of student Flex Ambassadors and some parents to either Olds High School or William E. Hay High School in Steler. Please have a conversaon with your child about the importance of driving safely at all mes, not just when in the school neigh- bourhood. School fees are charged in ac- cordance with Chinook’s Edge School Division policy and with the approval of IHS Parent Adviso- ry Council. These fees are used to provide programs, both core and complementary, for the students in this school. Currently, we have a significant amount of outstanding school fees. If you are unable to pay your fees or would like to make ar- rangements to pay them over me or have them waived, please contact me so we can make provi- sions for this. Principal’s Message High School Redesign: What everyone should know? Next year, IHS is hoping to be part of the High School Redesign project that Alberta Education has been running for a number of years. Essentially, we will be look-ing at changing some of the things that we have been doing in order to help our students be more successful. Despite the fact that we have made dramatic changes in our building over the past 4 years in areas such as graduation rates, discipline statistics and pass/fail ratios in classes, we still see areas that need tweaking. For example, we will be exploring our assess-ment practices as a school staff over the next couple of months in anticipation of the upcoming change. On March 4, we are hoping to take two groups of student Flex Ambassadors and some parents to either Olds High School or William E. Hay High School in Stettler. The two groups will compare the set up that each school has and have some conversations about what High School Redesign should look like in Innisfail High School. If you or your child is interested in being part of this process, please con-tact me asap and let me know.

Drive Safe! Please have a conversation with your child about the importance of driving safely at all times, not just when in the school neigh-bourhood. When a student is reported for unsafe driving, stand-ard policy is to involve the RCMP unless the incident occurs on school property. In this situation, school admin AND RCMP may be part of the solution process. The fine for stunting is very hefty, but not nearly as bad as having stu-dents hurt or killed due to careless driving. Please help us ensure that all our students get home safely. Talk with your child about being safe behind the wheel. Tough Economy, We Can Help! School fees are charged in ac-cordance with Chinook’s Edge School Division policy and with the approval of IHS Parent Adviso-ry Council. These fees are used to provide programs, both core and complementary, for the students in this school. Currently, we have a significant amount of outstanding school fees. If you are unable to pay your fees or would like to make ar-rangements to pay them over time or have them waived, please contact me so we can make provi-sions for this. If your child is

interested in participating in an extra-curricular activity that you cannot afford, please call me to make arrangements. In accord-ance with Division policy, all fees that are unpaid and where ar-rangements haven’t been made will be forwarded to a collection agency. As well, students whose parents have not paid fees (and who haven’t made arrangements to waive or pay the fees) may be unable to participate in such activ-ities as Prom, extra-curricular activities, and the like.

We were very fortunate to receive a grant from the Alberta founda-tion for the Arts. They paid for a two week program with Andrew Glazebrook. Andrew is a profes-sional woodturner and artisan who works with schools all over Alberta and in the United States. He brings his lathes and all kinds of amazing types of woods

for the students to build projects.

From Feb. 2 to Feb. 13, our stu-dents learned lathe safety, proper tool use and have made tops, rings, salt and pepper shakers, scoops, porridge stirrers, mush-rooms, spatulas and many other wonderful things. These projects are basic in nature but the skills that the students have learned can lead them on to pursuing more artistic endeavours. The purpose of this program is to al-low students access to profession-al tools that schools most often can not afford and be able to use these tools under expert supervi-

sion.

Our Busy Teachers... Our own Miss J. Littke was an organizer for a di-ploma prep course for Chem 30 students from Olds, Sylvan Lake and Innisfail at Division Office. There were over 60 students from the three schools in attendance. It was a two day event that took place Friday, January 23 and Saturday, January 24. Miss Littke and other Chem 30 teachers from the three schools worked together to go through the four main units in the course. Shown at right is another meeting at Division Office as Biology teachers reviewed the

diploma exam. Our Mr. Ramrattan (left) was there.

A Message from the

Superintendent

Ensuring our students are

engaged in meaningful

learning and encouraged to

rise to new challenges is our

mission in Chinook’s Edge.

To achieve that goal, we

work to provide a safe and

caring culture, where stu-

dents feel a sense of belong-

ing. These are some of the

values that guide our efforts

and surround our students

every day in our division.

Chinook’s Edge has

developed important

relationships through our

‘Matters’ committees,

which has honoured our

values and invigorated the

quality of learning for every

student in our division.

This innovative approach

to collaboration has grown

to include Students Matter,

Teachers Matter, Parents

Matter and Support Staff

Matter committees. This

unique style of engaging

with individuals across our

complex organization has

set a solid path towards our

vision for learning. Most

importantly, it has fortified

the values that our Chi-

nook’s Edge families have

come to expect from us.

Kurt Sacher

Superintendent of Schools

As spring holidays approach, we know that many families

have vacations planned, both within and outside of Canada.

Travelling increases your family’s risk of exposure to many

different diseases, including measles. Measles is a very real

threat in many parts of the world, including as close to home

as California, where a measles outbreak is currently ongoing.

It is always important to ensure all your immunizations are up

to date before you travel.

If you are uncertain whether you and/or yoru children need the

MMR vaccine before travelling, please call your local commu-

nity health centre to discuss. If you are not sure how to reach

your local community health centre, you can also call Health

Link Alberta at 1.866.408.5465.

Measles is a serious disease:

In fact, about one in ten people with measles need hospital

treatment.

Measles is extremely contagious:

Measles disease is caused by a virus that spreads easily

through the air. The virus can survive in the air for up to two

hours.

Measles can be prevented with vaccine:

Two doses of the MMR vaccine, at the appropriate ages and

intervals, are required to be protected against measles.

Be sure you and your family are protected. For more

information on measles disease and the MMR vaccine, please

visit www.immunizealberta.ca or call Health Link Alberta at

1.866.408.5465.
