Summer at Harding Academy is an exciting time to broaden your inter-ests, explore opportunities, and learn new skills. Our talented instructors offer a wide range of programs designed to try a new activity, pursue your passions, or just have good ol’ fashioned fun!

This helpful little booklet will help you find the best programs for your in-terests this summer. It’s organized based on dates of availability, so you’ll first come across programs offered June 1-5, and so on. Each program will also define which ages and gender can apply.

Low Enrollment & Session ChangesHarding reserves the right to cancel any programs due to low enrollment. If this is the case, a refund of camp fees will be issued, less any online registration fees.

CostsAll half-day camps at Harding have a base cost of $150, and full-day camps a base of $300. Some camps may show a slight increase from additional staffing, materials, or rental fees.

Summer Extended CareOpen to all camp participants, summer extended care will provide the same top-notch service and activity as the rest of our programs, while offering additional flexibility for working families.

Both morning and afternoon extended care sessions are available, but no mid-day care is available. For example, a child registered for a half-day morning camp may register for AM extended care (7:30–8:30 AM), but must still be picked up at the completion of the camp half-day at 11:30 AM. In the same way, an afternoon half-day camper may register for PM extended care (3:00–4:00 pm). Extended care sessions must be registered as an entire week, not by single days.

Week 1: June 1–5 Boxfest 1Director: Anne Swift and Kim Usher12:00–3:00 PMGrades: 1–5If you loved Roxaboxen, you will love Boxfest! Join us for a week where you can transform a plain cardboard box into a castle, a submarine, and animal hospital...anything! Come join us as you create and play in struc-tures of your own design.

Fast Feet FutsalDirector: Adam Jones12:00–3:00 PMGrades: 4–8Futsal is a thriving sport throughout the world. Seen as the indoor version of soccer, many of the rules are adapted to increase the pace of the sport, and suit the smaller sized field/court. The camp will be designed to show the students a new version of the game they love!

Middle School Boys BasketballDirector: Jason Embry8:30–11:30 AMGrades: 6–8This camp offers middle school boys the opportunity to work with Head Coach Jason Embry, during the off season. Join Coach Embry in drills, learning plays, and scrimmages.

Superhero CampDirector: Tandy Perkins8:30–11:30 AMGrades: PreK–1Calling all superheroes!!! If you’re looking for an action packed camp...this ones for you you. Each day we will watch a short animated super-hero show, followed by snack, craft, and imaginative play time. We will also discuss qualities of superheroes and have some special every day heroes come to visit.

Under the SeaDirector: Little Scholars8:30–11:30 AMGrades: PreKDive into our underwater adventure where we discover treasures, meet sea friends and cause lots of commotion in the ocean! Let’s splash and play while learning all about the ocean environment and creatures. Our adventure will include books, songs, crafts, and lots of movement.

Green Thumb ClubDirector: Little Scholars8:30–11:30 AMGrades: K–2Catch an insect, grow a terrarium and save the earth…all while learning about nature and the world around us through exciting expeditions, sci-ence, and environmental exploration. Our Green Thumb Club will ignite your child’s passion for nature, recycling and learning about the earth through educational activities and science investigations.

Pocket Brick MonstersDirector: Bricks 4 Kidz®8:30–11:30 AMGrades: K–5Get ready for an adventure in the world of Pokemon! Tap into your inner engineer as we build Dratini, Pikachu, Poke Balls, and more. Bring your own Pokemon trading cards if you wish to play and trade at the end of each day.

Jr Robotics 101Director: Bricks 4 Kidz®12:00–3:00 PMGrades: 1–3How would you like to turn your next LEGO creation into a robot, pro-grammed to do exactly what you tell it to do? The Bricks 4 Kidz Junior Robotics camp offers all the fun of building with LEGO Bricks, PLUS the challenge of computer programming!

Week 2: June 8–12Robot CampDirector: Keith Trehy/John Wicks8:30–11:30 AMGrades: 1–7Have your child spend summer camp diving into the wonders of tech-nology with lessons on locomotion, circuitry, programming and more. Campers will experiment with a variety of fun, hands-on activities meant to spark their interest in applied science and get them asking questions about how things work.

Learn more about your new school to be ready for the first day in August!!

Around About Adventure IDirector: Jason Embry8:30 AM–4:00 PMGrades: 4–8Join Coach Embry as you will be going to different activities around town from 8:30 AM–4:30 PM, each day. The activities will include Nashville Shores, Sky High, Mammoth Cave, Zoo, Skating, Adventure Science Center, and Beech Bend Amusement Park. A snack and drink is provided daily.

STEMDirector: Tandy Perkins8:30–11:30 AMGrades: PreK–KJoin Mrs. Perkins for some educational fun. We will have lots of hands-on activities exploring Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathemat-ics. This is a great opportunity to stimulate your child’s natural curiosity and love of learning. They will design and construct a spaghetti tower, explore the sweet science of candy, use a variety of digital tools, and play math games just to name a few things!

Mermaid Gals & Pirate PalsDirector: Little Scholars8:30–11:30 AMGrades: PreKAhoy Mates and Mermaids…let’s set sail on an adventure into the world of mermaids and pirates. Treasure hunts, sand castle building and mys-tical ocean discoveries await us. This adventure will dive deep into the music, arts, language development and social skills.

Cooking Around the WorldDirector: Little Scholars8:30–11:30 AMGrades: PreKVisit Italy and make tiramisu, Sail to Mexico and make salsa, and then cruise to a new culinary destination like France to make crepes and where you will explore the tastes of the world. Our chefs will cook and craft the week away with a very special cookbook as a part of their travel souvenirs.

Mystery MadnessDirector: Little Scholars8:30 AM–3:00 PMGrades: 3–5WANTED…Detectives and Investigators! Get out your magnifying glass-es and detective hats as we have clues to decipher and crimes to solve. We’ll put our critical thinking to the test and get to the bottom of each of these mysteries by learning the tricks real investigators use to solve cases.

Be an EntrepreneurDirector: Ms Biz8:30–11:00 AMGrades: 4–8Turn your passion for art, crafts, jewelry or photography into a business! You will start by designing your own product line (hands-on!), then learn how to turn into a business selling on art sites like Etsy. Create logos, websites, b-cards, videos. Art supplies are provided or bring your own.

Create Letterpress Logo Art!Director: Ms Biz12:00–3:00 PMGrades: 2–5Create your own logo using letterpress-style rubber stamps! Combine designs and letters in interesting ways to make a logo for yourself, a club, sports team, or a business idea. Make posters, cards, gift tags and t-shirts.

Clash of BricksDirector: Bricks 4 Kidz®8:30–11:30 AMGrades: K–5Gather your barbarians and archers! It’s time for battle… Bricks 4 Kidz style. Collect and store gold and elixir to train troops and build villages. You must stop at nothing to defend your village from enemy attacks!

Emmet’s WorldDirector: Bricks 4 Kidz®12:00–3:00 PMGrades: K–5Inspired by elements of The LEGO Movie, this Bricks 4 Kidz camp is a variety of our favorite themes including SuperHeroes, Pirates, Cars, Sports, Construction Vehicles, Spacemen and More! Each day will in-clude loads of building, games, challenges, and motorized creations that are sure to make you feel like you are a part of Emmet’s World.

Volleyball Camp–Individual SkillsDirector: Carol Green8:30–11:30 AMGrades: 6–8Focus on Individual Skills (serving, passing, setting, attacking), proper technique and mechanics. Fast-paced drills and games to improve ac-curacy and consistency. Preparation (but not prerequisite) for July team camp. Coaches are varsity coach Carol Green, assistant varsity coach Stephen Rhein, and Harding JV head volleyball coach Amanda Rhein.

Volleyball Camp–Future GeneralsDirector: Carol Green12:00–3:00 PMGrades: 3–5For the newcomer, an introduction to volleyball. Focus on Individual Skills (serving, passing, setting, attacking), proper technique and mechanics. For the returning volleyball player, continue improving individual skills. Fast-paced drills and games to improve accuracy and consistency.

Build It! Brain CampDirector: Grace Wilkinson8:30–11:30 AM Grades: 2–5Join Mrs. Wilkinson for Build it! Brain Camp. Explore your brain, learn how it works, and “grow and build” it as we create fun projects that will challenge your problem-solving skills. You will build an unsinkable ship, create a Rube Goldberg machine (chain reaction machine), experiment with forces and energy and play games that promote critical thinking.

ActingDirector: Braden Bell12:00–3:00 PM Grades: 5–8, HSYou have talent, now learn the technique! Working on monologues, campers will explore the methods and techniques that professional ac-tors learn to create a memorable role.This is a class for serious students.

Kids Can Code!Director: Grace Wilkinson and Sara Neuss12:00–3:00 PM Grades: 2–5Do you enjoy playing games or creating pictures on the computer? What is coding? When you write code, you are telling the computer exactly what to do with simple step-by-step commands. The end result can be in the form of a picture, a game, an animated video, or even an app!

Week 3: June 15–19Wet, Wild & Wacky Summer FunDirector: Amanda Millikan & Gena Moran12:00–3:00 PM Grades: 2–5It’s summer time again. You miss your friends and you are thinking of what you can do on another hot day. We have just the answer!!! Come have the time of your life being wild with your friends, getting wet, and having a wacky time with Coach Millikan and Mrs. Moran. This will be a week you will never forget!

Electronic Game Design : Racing Car gamesDirector: Engineering For Kids staff members8:30–11:30 AM Grades: 3–7During the Electronic Game Design Racing classes, students will use Multimedia Fusion 2® to create their own video game. Students design a racetrack, race cars and an environment in which their cars compete. At the end of the class, students take home a copy of the game they create.

Engineering AdventuresDirector: EFK staff members12:00–3:00 PM Grades: 3–5Campers explore the fields Engineering fields like Aerospace, Mechan-ical, Software, Hardware, Electrical etc as they participate in various challenges to strengthen their minds.

A Fairy AdventureDirector: Patti Wright and Keyne Scott8:30–11:30 AM Grades: K–2Enter the land of fairies! We will make our own fairy doll and create a house and a world for her to live in. There will be lots of fairy fun, includ-ing tea parties, stories and crafts.

Princess CampDirector: Tandy Perkins8:30–11:30 AM Grades: PK–2Join Mrs.Perkins, and her daughter Layla, for a fun-filled week! A prin-cess-themed movie, craft, treat and more await you each day. You also won’t want to miss the ‘Parade of Princesses’ on the pink runway!

Alphabet ArtDirector: Little Scholars 8:30–11:30 AM Grades: PKNow I know my ABCs, won’t you come and draw with me? Make the alphabet come to life through a wide variety of arts and crafts activities. Alphabet Art will expose your budding scholar to learning letter-sound relationships, letter formation and sensory experiences.

Whiz Kids Director: Little Scholars 8:30–11:30 AM Grades: K–2Grab your goggles and lab coat…we are heading on a scientific discov-ery mission to explore the world of science through everyday objects, experiments and encounters. This camp will enhance the STEM educa-tion philosophies taught in your science class with the added excitement of scientific experiments.

Ms.Biz-CODE Interactive Art & Music!Director: Alison Rinner, Becky Fox Mathews and Sharon Mendonsa8:30–11:30 AM Grades: 3–7Code a banana piano? Create a talking robot using your own voice? Hack everyday objects like bananas or playdoh turning them into touch-pads. We combine the MIT MakeyMakey Invention Kit with simple drag and drop coding to make interactive art, music, and more!

Space AdventuresDirector: Bricks 4 Kidz®8:30–11:30 AM Grades: K–5Inspired by NASA and Star Wars, our Space Adventures Camp is packed full of models that will make your imagination blast off! Each day, camp-ers will learn about real-life space exploration and build models related to the NASA space program.

Mining & Crafting IDirector: Bricks 4 Kidz12:00–3:00 PM Grades: 1–5Minecraft is a game about placing blocks to build anything you can imag-ine. At night monsters come out – make sure to build a shelter before that happens. Experience the world of Minecraft with LEGO Bricks in this fun summer camp!

Musical Theater 1Director: Braden Bell12:00–3:00 PM Grades: 5–8, HSCampers will learn and practice the fundamental skills of performing in musical theater. Combining voice and acting skills, students will present a showcase for parents at the end of the week. This camp can be repeat-ed. Serious students going into fifth grade are welcome too.

Chess–Intermediate/Advanced Director: Igor Zhislin8:30–11:30 AM Grades: 1–6This camp is for chess players that have moved beyond the beginner level. Campers will advance their knowledge and skills in all areas of the game, with special emphasis placed on tactics. The camp will be led by Igor Zhislin, a former Ukrainian Student Champion.

Chess–Beginner/Novice Director: Igor Zhislin12:00–3:00 PM ($150 price)Grades: 1–6This camp is a great opportunity for beginners to get introduced to the game of chess. Campers will enjoy the challenge, have fun learning the rules, strategy and tactics, and of course playing chess! The camp will be led by Igor Zhislin, a former Ukrainian Student Champion.

S’more Than CampingDirector: Little Scholars 8:30–11:30 AM Grades: PKWe are going on a camping adventure so grab your sleeping bags and flashlight and join us around the camp fire! Let’s tell our favorite camping stories, go on a scavenger hunt and make some cool camping crafts!

BuildersDirector: Little Scholars 8:30–11:30 AM Grades: K–2Calling all inventors, creators, builders and designers! Come build some awesome creations with us! We will create our own designs and make structures using Legos, recyclable materials and many other interesting items such as Lifesavers, paper bags and marshmallows.

Amazing AdventuresDirector: Little Scholars 8:30 AM–3:00 PM Grades: 3–5Attention All Amazing Kids! We are going to take you on an adventure. We will fill your summer days with paper airplanes, pirates, secret codes and many more amazing activities. You will sharpen your reasoning skills, increase processing speed, and broaden your creative mind.

Teenage Mutant Brick TurtlesDirector: Bricks 4 Kidz®8:30–11:30 AM Grades: K–5Grab your katanas and nunchucks as we prepare to fight crime with Teenage Brick Turtles! Practice engineering as you build two of the cou-rageous turtles and their wise Japanese rat sensei, Master Splinter, then defeat the villainous Shredder and his evil Foot Clan!

ZB LandDirector: Anne Zuberer, Jane Brown8:30–11:30 AM Grades: PK, KCome to Z-B Land, super world of creative fun! Join teachers Anne Zuberer and Jane Brown for an exciting adventure into the land of drama and visual arts. Designed for ages 4–6, and runs Monday–Thursday.

Musical Theater AdventureDirector: Braden Bell8:30–11:30 AM Grades: 2–4In this class, younger students will be introduced to and further strength-en musical theater skills–the ability to act and sing at the same time. Fo-cusing on integrating acting fundamentals, students will showcase their work for parents in an informal performance on the last day.

Week 5: July 6–10Picture BookwormDirector: Amanda Millikan8:30–11:30 AMGrades: PK–2Each day campers will explore the literary world through children’s books and recreate the characters and/or theme in an artistic way. We will discover what happens when “Elmer” doesn’t want to be elephant color anymore, campers will find their rhythm with Gerald in “Giraffe’s Can’t Dance”, learn what happens in the life of a plant with Eric Carle’s “The Tiny Seed” and so much more! Snack provided.

Girls Lacrosse CampDirector: Claire Gibson & Matt Ragland8:30–11:30 AM Grades: 5–8Varsity coach Claire Gibson and Matt Ragland are teaming up to offer a first rate lacrosse camp to middle school girls! We will work on individu-al and team play tactics, scrimmage, and other specializations like the draw and goalkeeping! (Athletes must provide their own equipment. Eye protection is required)

Princesses & Superheroes Director: Little Scholars 8:30–11:30 AM Grades: PKDo you have what it takes to save the world? Come and train to be the superhero or princess you were meant to be! Save the world from evil-doers everywhere in this interactive and high energy class. The training combines co-operative games, team building activities, literature, educational enrichment activities and craft projects to ensure your pow-ers will be supreme.

Krafty KidsDirector: Little Scholars 8:30–11:30 AM Grades: K–2Join us for an arts and crafts experience you will talk about all summer long. We will learn about the about the ancient art of origami, make picture frames and other keepsakes. Express your unique personality with personalized pieces. You will come away from this camp with many treasured mementos.

Intro to Robotics with EV3Director: Bricks 4 Kidz®8:30–11:30 AM Grades: 4–6Experience the cutting edge of technology with the introduction of LEGO MINDSTORMS EV3 Robotics. Campers will be captivated as they incorporate the newest generation of motors, sensors and software by programming their commands directly into the intelligent brick. Test their capabilities by moving an object with a robotic claw, building a robot that draws, or creating a mouse trap!

Ticket 2 RideDirector: Bricks 4 Kidz®12:00–3:00 PM Grades: K–5Get your Ticket to Ride at Bricks 4 Kidz very own Amusement Park! Campers will build a new ride each day, learning how to make things spin, roll, turn and rock. Then they will take what they have learned to design their own thrills and challenges. Motorized models maximize the action and the fun. Each camp day includes carnival-themed games, group challenges, model building and more

Creative WritingDirector: Braden Bell12:00–3:00 PM Grades: 5–8, HSOpen to serious students from 5th grade and up. Working with a pub-lished author, students will learn techniques that professional writers use to create compelling characters, plots, and settings. Students will also re-ceive a detailed critique of their work. Note: students will be doing some writing outside of the class time.

Week 6: July 13–17MinecraftDirector: Amanda Millikan12:00–3:00 PMGrades: 2–6Creative and collaborative, Minecraft allows children to create their own fantastic “worlds,” populated by colorful characters called avatars. As a group, the students avatars build, dig, explore, collect resources, and work together to solve problems. While honing important technical skills such as keyboarding and spatial relationships, the children learn to cooperate, share, contribute to a community, discuss problems, and conquer obsta-cles. Students will also break each day for a provided snack and outdoor play. *Campers must already have a Minecraft Mojang account before camp begins.

Outdoor Adventure!Director: Matt Ragland8:30 AM–3:00 PMGrades: 5–8Join Harding Coach and Summer Director Matt Ragland for an exciting week of outdoor adventure! Matt has formed partnerships with the best adventures and guides Nashville has to offer, including rock climbing, mountain biking, stand-up paddleboarding, and a trip to Cummins Falls! Matt is a certified lifeguard, and is trained by NOLS in wilderness first aid and CPR.

Comic CreationsDirector: Little Scholars 8:30 AM–3:00 PM Grades: 3–5Do you have a knack for drawing? Do you like to write? We have the sum-mer camp for you! Come join us as we explore the world of comics. We will learn about the different styles of cartooning, create new characters, and build a portfolio of your work.

Cooking Around the WorldDirector: Little Scholars 8:30–11:30 AM Grades: PKVisit Italy and make tiramisu, Sail to Mexico and make salsa, and then cruise to a new culinary destination like France to make crepes and where you will explore the tastes of the world. Bricks 4 Girlz FriendsDirector: Bricks 4 Kidz®8:30–11:30 AM Grades: K–5Grab your friends and come hang out in Heartlake City! Meet the LEGO Friends and enjoy a different area of Heartlake City each day. From a day working at the City Cafe’ to visiting the Heartlake Stables, we’ll do lots of other unique things bricks, from jewelry making to brick art to great crafting fun, we’ll make a take-home project each day. Come and discov-er your girl building power!

Classic Arcade Brick AdventuresDirector: Bricks 4 Kidz®12:00–3:00 PM Grades: 1–5Jump into the world of classic arcade and video games! Eat flashing dots, collect coins and rings, avoid getting killed by enemies…there are so many obstacles to overcome and levels to beat! Let’s take it back to when it all started, the 1980’s! Campers will build a famous plumber, a Brick Eater, a jumping hedgehog, alien invaders, and more!

Week 7: July 20–24Young Filmmaker’s WorkshopDirector: Zac Adams12:00–3:00 PM Grades: 2–6The Young Filmmaker’s Workshop is an exciting and hands on produc-tion class. Students will write, direct, produce, film, and act in a 10 minute movie. Each class collaborates on one project. After shooting is done, a professional editor pieces together the footage with effects, music, and credits. Students are mailed their DVD four weeks after class ends.

A platform game is a side-scrolling, Mario-type game where students pro-gram characters and a two-dimensional obstacle course. Students take home a copy of the game they create!

We will build and design mini tree houses, totem poles, robots, cars and many more fantastic wood creations by hammering, sanding and painting our own wood masterpieces.

Ms.Biz–Create Letterpress Art!Director: Alison Rinner12:00–3:00 PM Grades: 2–5Create your own logo using letterpress-style rubber stamps! Combine designs and letters in interesting ways to make a logo for yourself, a club, sports team, or business idea. Make posters, cards, and t-shirts!

Super Hero AcademyDirector: Bricks 4 Kidz®8:30–11:30 AM Grades: K–5Explore the caped crusaders and discover their super powers. Spider-man, Captain America, Hulk, Batman and Iron Man help you create a fantasy world and protect it against all the evil arch enemies with custom contraptions made with LEGO Bricks.

A Pirates QuestDirector: Bricks 4 Kidz®12:00–3:00 PM Grades: K–5Shiver me timbers as we explore the popular culture behind the life of a pirate. Build a motorized pirate ship, a helm and an anchor, as we batten down the hatches and prepare for mutiny. Beware me mateys, if it’s too late, you must abandon ship and build a rowboat to escape. Anchors aweigh.

Generals Team Volleyball CampDirector: Carol Green8:30–11:30 AM Grades: 6–8Focus on Individual Skills (serving, passing, setting, attacking), proper technique and mechanics. Fast-paced drills and games to improve ac-curacy and consistency. Preparation (but not prerequisite) for July team camp. Coaches are head varsity coach Carol Green, assistant Stephen Rhein, and JV head coach Amanda Rhein.

Volleyball Camp–Future GeneralsDirector: Carol Green12:00–3:00 PMGrades: 3–5For the newcomer, an introduction to volleyball. Focus on Individual Skills (serving, passing, setting, attacking), proper technique and mechanics. For the returning volleyball player, continue improving individual skills. Directions to CampusHarding Academy: From I-440 take the West End (Hwy 70) exit, away from downtown Nashville, towards Belle Meade. After passing Belle Me-ade Mansion on the left, turn left at the second traffic light onto Harding Place. Drive one block and look on the left for the Harding Academy sign.

Hwy 70 Fields: From the main campus, turn right onto Harding Place. At the Harding Road light, turn left and merge into the right lane onto Hwy 70 at the split. Turn right in 1.2 miles into the parking lot at 6506 Highway 70.
