April 2015

Greetings Sunburst Members, What a tease mother nature can be! We were pleasantly surprised with 60 degree weather in mid-March, then we get blasted with 5 inches of snow on the 23rd. Yuck!!!! Being a life-long Chicagoan I should be used to these weather shifts, but I still find them cruel. The “Strut Your Stuff” Car Show is a mere two months away and most of the planning has been completed. Now all we need is great weather, lots of volunteers and a ton of participants. Gary Gembala has, once again, laid out the plans for a fantastic day, and the biggest fund raising event of the year for Sunburst. It’s my hope that everyone in the Club can support this event by being a participant and showing your car, volunteering to help with some of the many tasks necessary to make the show work and/or making a donation to be included in our silent auction. The Sunburst event calendar is filling up quickly (see page 11). Most recently we added the 4th of July Parade in Wonder Lake, Trippin’ on LSD (a Sunday cruise down Lake Shore Drive) and The Great Chevy Round-Up Trip ( to see a phenomenal collection of Chevy Convertibles in Ankeny IA). Check out the flyers in this month’s newsletter for these and other upcoming events. It’s nice to see that “Flash Drives” are alive and well. Recently the Club has been to Crandall’s for corned beef (prior to St. Patty’s Day) and to Top Golf in Itasca. And of course, we’ve been to one of our major sponsors, Brunch Café in Huntley, for breakfast. Got an idea for a “Flash Drive”, let one of the Board members know and we’ll help you put one together. Finally, I’d like to give a big “Shout Out” to the following Sunburst members who were recognized at the Mid-West Region awards banquet in March: Bill Hoak was 6th overall, Lee Douglas was 8th overall, Matt Waters was 25th, Rich Orr was 32nd overall. Sunburst Women were recognized as well: Mehlinae Douglas was 3rd overall, Jo Hoak was 18th overall and the #1 for worker points. Congratulations. As a Club, Sunburst was ranked 8th out of the 26 clubs in the Midwest Region. April is really the month to kick off the driving events for Sunburst. I hope to see all you at as many events as possible. The more you participate, the more opportunities you have to meet some really great Corvette enthusiasts and get the most out of owning your Corvette. Respectfully, Mike Stevens, President

SUNBURST CORVETTE CLUB MEMBERSHIP MEETING MINUTES February 5, 2015 Thursday Cary Country Club, Cary, IL

Mike Stevens, President: - Opened the club meeting at 7pm. Greeters for this month were, Rich Orr and Kris Jensen. Thanks for your help ! Introduction of guests and visitors: Bill Mumford introduced Kay Hogan as a new member with a 98 Convertible Any new Corvette additions: None Approval of Minutes: Mike Stevens entertained a motion to accept the minutes of the February meeting be approved, Dave Thomas moved, Gina Wierz, seconded. All in favor, with no Nays. Minutes approved! Officers Reports President – Mike Stevens - Nothing specific to report! Vice President – Ron Gliot - Nothing Specific to report! Ron was “Speechless”!! Secretary – Al Higgins – Nothing to report! Governor – Bill Hoak reported he and his wife attended the Governors Meeting in St Louis Feb. 28th. The drive home was extraordinary as they experienced 8 inches of snow. Once again NCCC talked about the requirement for waivers for club events. We will need wavers for the Michigan trip, and Starved Rock events. As wavers does not pertain to “Flash Drives”. Also, we need to clean up the member’s data base, as several members have moved during the past year, and their 2015 NCCC membership packets were returned to NCCC. Auto cross at Galesburg may be on again. They have a new venue, and need to get the site numbers changed. The Governors were notified of the upcoming California Dreamin’ trip and some individuals were thinking of looking into it! Bloomington Gold this year is at Indianapolis IN this yr. and Guy Larson is the individual that runs it at the Brickyard. In Indianapolis there will be Auto Crossing and opportunities to drive you car around the track. Should you have a need for speed, you can be driven around the tack in a two seat Indy Car $250 with a professional race car driver at 160 MPH. The 2015 National Convention will be in the Pocono’s. Additional information is available on the NCCC Midwest Region web site. Every year NCCC auctions off a Corvette. In 2015, the Museum is raffling off 40 Corvettes this yr. This will be cutting into the charity work that NCCC does this yr. NCCC Tickets will be 3 / $25 and available at an event. Or use the green sheet in your packet and get 5 / $25. The event for Oak Creek has been cancelled as they lost the venue location. Now local clubs are scrambling to find events to replace the 28 events that were lost! Treasurer – Dee Rosendahl - Beginning Balance $4,408 Revenue $133 Expenses $195 (Car Show Flyers) Ending Balance $4346 The 2015 Proposed Budget were on each table for club members to review. The proposed budget tracks closely previous budgets, with only minor changes. At the end of the yr. we should have approximately $ 5,500 available to donate to our five charities. Mike Stevens noted, the largest expense the club ensures during the year is our Christmas Holiday Party which we budgeted $1,000 for that. We have to keep the storage unit thru May. Expenses for the Christmas party is estimated at $1,200. Historically, the club never subsidized the Christmas Party, it was always paid for my the attendees. Five – six years ago, the attendance level was dwindling and the board did a survey of club members. One of the question on the survey was on a price points. It seemed at that time members were looking for under $50 for attendance. The club was flush at that time, and the board decided to underwrite the Christmas Party by $ 1,000. Now we’re subsidizing $10 / person. This Yr we came in under budget, the previous yr. we came in a little over budget! Chris Jensen moved to approve the Proposed 2015 Budget and Tom Palmer seconded the motion. There was no discussion. All were in favor with no Nays. Proposed 2015 Budget Approved.

Notes  from

 the  Gov

April  2015    Hello  Sunburst  Members,    Well,  spring  has  sprung  the  grass  has  riz  I  wonder  where  the  flowers  is?!    Hopefully,  the  cars  are  out  of  their  sleeping  quarters  for  the  winter  and  back  on  the  roads  of  mid  America  and  beyond.    It  always  brings  a  smile  to  my  face  when  I  hear  that  LS2  motor  in  our  car  start  for  the  first  time  in  the  spring.    This  month  I  am  going  to  write  about  the  2015  NCCC  Convention  that  takes  place  in  the  beautiful  Pocono  Mountains  of  Pennsylvania.    Pocono  is  derived  from  a  Delaware  Indian  word,  Pocohanne,  which  means  “stream  between  the  mountains”.      Or  backwards,  it  is  “O  No  Cop!”    I  gathered  some  information  from  the  NCCC  website  to  the  location  of  the  host  hotel  and  events  during  the  convention.    I  hope  you  will  consider  going  to  the  convention  and  join  my  wife  and  I  and  several  other  members  that  are  planning  on  going.        Thank  you  for  your  support  and  Save  the  Wave!

Over the winter some of us SCC’ers have stumbled on what looks to be one incredible collection of (150) convertible Chevy’s from the first until 1975 in Akeny, IA, the Albaugh Collection. OK. Get your Sunburst ex 60s/70s minds out of the psychedelic world!

We are not talking about that kind of trippin’! What we are talking about

is doing our favorite things like driving and eating! Where are we looking to trip? Well right here in

our fair city is one of the most beautiful, awesome drives in the

world, yet our club has rarely ever driven it.

Sunday, June 7th There's a road I'd like to tell you about, lives in my home town

Lake Shore Drive the road is called and it'll take you up or down From rags on up to riches fifteen minutes you can fly Pretty blue lights along the way, help you right on by

And the blue lights shining with a heavenly grace, help you right on by….

Mark your calendars to watch the sun come up over Chicago taking a beautiful open air ride on one of the most scenic drives in the world!

On Sunday 6/7, Sunburst Corvette Club will take a trip up Lake Shore Drive in Chicago!!! At this point you may be saying “No way my pristine Corvette will see the likes of Chicago with it’s screaming cabbies and baton wielding law enforcement officers, but alas we have solved the risks of urban mid-day driving! We will be making this trip at 6am! We will leave from a yet to be decided location along I90, heading downtown, north on LSD, up Sheridan Rd. and at the end have breakfast to top it off.

Please contact Ron Gliot at [email protected] if you plan on joining the trip!
