Official welcome
On behalf of the city of Brisbane, Australia’s New World City, I warmly welcome you to the 2015 Asia Pacific Cities Summit and Mayors’ Forum (#2015APCS).
Brisbane’s economic agenda is firmly focussed to increasing our ties with the Asia Pacific. The rapid growth and urbanisation in this region presents extraordinary opportunities and some challenges that must be met with leadership, forethought and innovation.
At #2015APCS, I look forward to deepening the dialogue on ‘business and leadership in the Asia Pacific’ examining the issues facing our cities and developing solutions that can be implemented across our region now and in the future.
2015 marks the tenth occasion that the Summit has been staged since it was established in Brisbane nearly two decades ago.
This year I have the pleasure of welcoming leaders of business and government from over 130 cities, many of whom will attend for the first time from across Australasia, Asia, the Middle East, Europe and the Americas.
I welcome the strong interest shown in this year’s Summit and would encourage you to make the most of this opportunity to connect with mayors and delegates, to widen your international network and harness potential business opportunities.
Thank you for your participation in this important event.
Graham Quirk Lord Mayor of Brisbane, Queensland, Australia

Welcome to Brisbane, Queensland and the 2015 Asia Pacific Cities Summit and Mayors’ Forum. Brisbane shone brightly hosting the G20
Leaders Summit last November and the world saw the great economic opportunities we have here in Queensland. 2015APCS is another significant opportunity to showcase Queensland on a global stage and that’s why the Queensland Government is proud to be a longstanding partner of the Summit.
The Asia Pacific region is recognised as the world’s economic powerhouse and one of the fastest growing markets. Queensland’s close proximity to Asia and our deep and long-standing ties – cultural and commercial – with countries in the
region offer endless opportunities. This Summit will help strengthen and highlight our position as an active and important global business partner.
Queensland has faced many issues and challenges created by rapid growth and the demand it creates for transport and social infrastructure in particular. As a result, we have become a leader in developing innovative solutions and our firms have significant expertise in transport design and construction, city planning and other social infrastructure in Australia and around the world.
We wish you a successful visit to Queensland and look forward to building our relationships into the future.
Anastacia Palaszczuk Premier of Queensland

Brisbane is recognised as one of the fastest-growing regions in Australia, driving Queensland’s economic growth. A sophisticated modern economy, cultural diversity and world-class industry capabilities support Brisbane’s growing influence as a serious player in the Asia Pacific region and reputation as a global investment destination.
Brisbane’s rapidly growing global reputation as a city of opportunity was affirmed by the successful hosting of the 2014 G20 Leaders Summit. As Australia’s New World City, Brisbane offers opportunities across a diverse range of industries from science and innovation; mining and resources; technology; education and cultural attractions. Brisbane has a vibrant and entrepreneurial business community, firmly connected
to global markets. Governed by the largest municipal council in Australia, Brisbane offers an open, supportive, stable and cost-competitive business environment and is committed to strengthening opportunities for international trade and commerce.
Developing further as a New World City, the next chapter in Brisbane’s economic development strategy is firmly focused on the global economy and aims to drive job creation, city-shaping, quality of life for residents and research and education expansion.

BUSINESS AND LEADERSHIP IN THE ASIA PACIFIC As a new wave of innovation and global development emerges, the economic gravity progressively shifts south and east towards the Asia Pacific; a highly dynamic region experiencing rapid growth and urbanisation. This brings forth both opportunities and challenges for the global community to embrace.
International government and industry experts will address critical issues affecting cities under the following program themes.
About 2015APCS
GLOBAL CITIES – cultivating talent, technology, and trade
Globally fluent cities embrace talent, technology, and trade. How can cities thrive economically through investments in workers, innovative firms and industries, and global engagement?
DIGITAL CITIES – the science and technology behind cities
The smarter and better-connected cities of the future will fully utilise a range of technologies to enhance environmental, social and economic performance. How can cities of today improve our housing, heritage, transportation, communications and city governance by embracing new and emergent technology?
FUTURE CITIES – developing cities and smart communities
How will cities tackle the challenges caused by increasing urbanisation? How should cities manage resilience, food supply, water security, sanitation, security and education?
CITIES FOR PEOPLE – clean, green, accessible and inclusive cities
How can administrations manage urban development and population growth in a resource-efficient and environmentally sensitive manner? What creative techniques, policies and technologies do cities have available to improve the quality of life of residents and how can cities create more engaging and inclusive public spaces.
