Every April for 47 years in Malaysia, the Malaysian Association of Professional Secretaries and Administrators (MAPSA), formerly known as Secretaries’ Society Malaysia (SSM) has been asking businesses in Malaysia to show gratitude for the people who get the job done in their office. JOHN SMURTHWAITEChairman, TNS

John Smurthwaite joined Frank Small & Associates in Melbourne, Australia in 1971 having moved from Fibremakers (ICI). After a few years as Managing Director of the Frank Small & Associates o�ce in Melbourne, John moved to Asia to head up the FSA Asia operations in Singapore and Kuala Lumpur. John began engineering the rapid expansion of FSA in the Asia region with acquisitions in Indonesia, Hong Kong, Korea, Taiwan and The Philippines in the mid 80s. In the 90s, he then set up the FSA business in Japan and India through JVs and acquisitions and Vietnam. John celebrates his 44th anniversary with TNS this year. John was awarded the Boss of the New Millennium 2000 by the Minister of Human Resources Malaysia.

DATUK HAJI MOHD IIYAS ZAINOL ABIDINGroup General Manager, DePalma Hotel

Datuk Haji Mohd Ilyas started his career in Hilton where he held various operational and management positions since 1972. He left Hilton International in 1993 as Deputy General Manager and went on to set up his own hotel management company, Biztel Sdn Bhd, as its Managing Director. Biztel has secured the Management of De Palma Group of Hotels since its inception in 1996. Datuk Hj Mohd IIyas contributed signi�cantly to the hotel industry and was elected as the President of Malaysian Association of Hotels (MAH) for consecutively 6th term since 2002 to 2014. In 1998, the International Who’s Who of Professional in the World recognized his achievements in the hotel business and he was listed in the book. Datuk was awarded the Boss of the Year 2014.

SIVANGANAM RAJARETNAN CEO, Malaysian Institute of Management

SIVANGANAM, has more than 30 years of experience in the manufacturing sector and has held Senior Executive Management positions, among which as General Manager and Operations Director for a large Multi-National Corporation. In January 2014, he was appointed the Chief Executive O�cer for the Malaysian Institute of Management.

Siva holds a Masters Degree in Business Administration from the University of South Australia and is a certi�ed PSMB trainer. He brings with him a wealth of experience and most suited for today’s program. While working with leaders in both corporate as well as voluntary organizations, he served in numerous leadership positions. In 2006 – 2007, he was the Presidential District 51 Governor of Toastmasters International for Brunei, Indonesia and Malaysia. He is passionate about nurturing young and upcoming managers and ever ready to share his experiences with them.

YBHG. TAN SRI DATO’ SERI DR. SHARIFAH HAPSAH SYED HASAN SHAHABUDIN President, National Council of Women’s Organisation (NCWO)

YBhg. Tan Sri Dato’ Seri Dr. Sharifah Hapsah is exemplary in the development of medical and highereducation in Malaysia. She is credited for the development of the quality assurance framework for all quali�cations in Malaysia. As Vice-Chancellor of Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM), she has developed a transformation plan for UKM introduced the commercialization of research products and initiated innovative programmes for human capital development. She has admirably combined her social activist work as President of the National Council of Women’s Organisation (NCWO) to strengthen community engagement projects at UKM. She is a proli�c writer and a columnist in the mainstream newspapers focusing on education, health and gender issues. She has received numerous international and national recognitions, including the Fred Kartz Memorial Medal and the COL-ICDE Award of Excellence.

A proven leader with a wealth of over 20 years of experience in marketing, brand communications, events, training and organizational development for local and international companies. Melissa is specialized in strategic communications; brand positioning; corporate and product marketing; stakeholder and employees’ engagement; CSR platforms and social strategy where she gained extensively being organization consultant, facilitator, mentor, and trainer across all levels of sta� with various business functions. Lim comes with 40 years of work life since 1971. His speciality is in Strategic Sales & Marketing Development, Organisational Turnaround and Management Culture Transformation. People development is his passion. His last position as Managing Director of Ricoh Malaysia (1999-2011) displayed his executive leadership in the digital o�ce solutions. Lim �rst started his work life learning about operations and organisation management from 1971 till 1981. For the next 10 years, Lim learned all about Sales Management after joining Xerox Corporation from 1981 till 1990. In 1991, Lim joined Inchcape Malaysia, which then became Ricoh Malaysia in 2000. Having served the Kelly Group for more than 10 years, Anthony Raja Devadoss is currently the Vice President - APAC with the Outsourcing & Consulting Group of Kelly Services. From network services, engineering to e-business solutions, Anthony Raja has worked in both India and Malaysia, within technical roles to the Chief Executive O�cer. He has received his Bachelors degree in Science and his MBA in Marketing & Postgraduate Diploma in Computing. He holds membership in various local and international associations such as the MIM, Human Capital Institute & Association of Career Professionals International. He is the Head of Policy Enablement & Government Liaison with Outsourcing Malaysia and a member of the Industry Advisory Board for the Graduate School of Business, UNIRAZAK. He has been recently appointed to the HR Capacity Building task force by the Ministry of Human Resources, Govt of Malaysia.

PAMELA FOONG, CPSMAPSA APW Conference Director | MAPSA Executive Advisor

Pamela Foong has more than 30 years of experience in both secretarial and administrative areas including training of secretarial support sta� and is currently a member of MAPSA Advisory Council of Past Presidents and a life-member since November 1975. She has served as President for two consecutive terms of o�ce from April 1998 till March 2003. Pamela is a Certi�ed Professional Trainer accredited by Malaysia Instutite of Management and Pembangunan Sumber Manusia Bhd. She serves as in-house trainer and lecturer for the CPS study program. Pamela was attached with Texas Instruments Malaysia for 29 years as Executive Assistant to the Managing Director having served 8 bosses (7 expatriates and 1 Malaysian). Pamela was awarded Secretary Of The Year (1984/1985); and the Steadtler “Topstar Secretary-of- the-Year” Award in May 1994. Michelle Koh is presently Executive Secretary to the Group General Manager of De Palma Group of Hotels. She has more than 25 years experience as a professional secretary. She started as Junior Secretary at Hoechst Malaysia Sdn Bhd and moved her way to becoming the Executive Secretary to the Managing Director, gaining a wealth of experience through the years. She was awarded Secretary Of The Year in 2000. Michelle started her training journey by lecturing part-time at Stamford College and Goon Institute for the Diploma in Executive Secretaryship and Diploma in Administrative Management. Christine started her career as Personal Assistant having worked in foreign bank, hotels and property developers. Esther has a wealth of over 25 years experience in the area of O�ce Administration and Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR). Esther gained great depth of professional excellence - a position she proudly held for 13 years and having worked closely with Chief Operating O�cers, Chief Executive O�cers and Chairman of Maxis Berhad, a telecommunications giant in Malaysia. Esther moved on championing the Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) program for the company and exposed extensively in crafting policy and guidelines in the �elds of community engagements involving communications and risk management initiatives. The Malaysian Association of Professional Secretaries & Administrators (MAPSA) is a not-for-profit professional association for office professionals with approximately 1,000 members and affiliates in Malaysia. MAPSA’s mission is to enhance the success of career minded administrative professionals by providing opportunities for growth through training, leadership and community building.

The Association founded in 1968 as Secretaries’ Society Malaysia provides a professional network and educational resources for secretarial staff. The association's name was changed in 2003 to Malaysian Association of Professional Secretaries & Administrators to encompass the large number of varied administrative job titles and recognize the advancing role of administrative professionals in business and government.

MAPSA is an active member of the Association of Secretaries and Administrative Professionals, Asia Pacific (ASAPAP) and The National Council of Women's Organization Malaysia (NCWO). MAPSA sister-associations are Sabah Association of Secretaries (SAS), Secretaries' Society Sarawak (SSS), Johor Association of Professional Secretaries & Administrators (JAPSA).

WHO QUALIFIES AS AN ADMINISTRATIVE PROFESSIONAL?Many people who contribute to the workplace in a variety of settings. The International Association of Administrative Professionals (IAAP) defines administrative professionals as “individuals who are responsible for administrative tasks and coordination of information in support of an office-related environment and who are dedicated to furthering their personal and professional growth in their chosen profession.” Research shows that many workers around the world still hold the “secretary” job title; however, many alternative titles have become more popular, such as administrative assistant, office coordinator, administrative specialist, executive assistant, and office manager.
