This year, our Board of Directors engaged in an all-day retreat focused on governance issues and planning for more active leadership in years to come. We are currently in the process of implementing these goals, which include development of special committees, decisions related to Board Member terms and giving/fundraising requirements. We are grateful to our current Board Members, many of whom have served in their roles since LEAP’s inception.

LEAP Global Missions is dedicated to enhancing and enriching the lives of people around the world by providing free, specialized medical and surgical services inspired by the love of Christ. To date, LEAP has provided free surgical services to over 9,000 people across the globe. LEAP primarily focuses on children, but we will also treat adults as the need and opportunity arises. Our volunteer base of about 275 is comprised of highly specialized surgeons, anesthesiologists and nurses, who—along with non-medical volunteers and a small but dedicated administrative staff—bring hope and heal ing to underserved communities in remote areas of the world.   Last year, approximately 91 percent of total donations to LEAP Global Missions were utilized for program expenses. LEAP obtains most of the necessary funding for our programs through grants from foundations, donations from individual supporters and funds raised through special events.

I am both humbled and blessed to be a part of LEAP. Out of a step forward in faith and thousands of dedicated volunteers, God has nurtured an organization that has transformed numerous lives and grows stronger every year. It’s hard to believe that we celebrate our 25th anniversary of service next year. When we travel across the world to deliver the gift of surgical transformation, I believe it is a reflection of the gospel of Jesus Christ. For example, the mother who prays for healing for her child, with no realistic way of making it happen on her own, receives it freely through our surgical mission. Many of us chose the medical profession to help people, not because it is financially profitable. There is nothing purer than giving our talents to those in areas of the world that do not have access to the kind of transformational surgery we offer. Many of the children we operated on in our early years are now young adults leading productive lives. One such young lady, Mei-Lin Joa, is now finishing her surgical residency in the Dominican Republic and plans to make mission surgery a large part of her practice throughout Latin America. The quality of staff, volunteers, financial supporters and young leaders affiliated with LEAP is unparalleled. If God has used LEAP this mightily for 24 years, I can only imagine what the future will bring. Let’s work together--even harder--and step forward in faith to wherever God leads us.

A LEGACY OF LOVE.

A FUTURE OF HOPE.

DEBBIE WISDOM EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

7

My role is to effectively manage the operational aspects of the organization. In the two-plus years I have been Executive Director, I have discovered great acts of compassion representing the ties that bind this organization together. I am constantly awed by the sacred work we do, which is to serve as a healing balm for those suffering from isolation and rejection they are often too young to fully comprehend.   LEAP’s strength lies in our ability to act swiftly to meet the growing specialized surgical needs of our global community. Our nimble but mighty presence as a trusted resource has fostered nearly a quarter-century’s worth of relationships, both domestically and abroad. Looking ahead, we must find a way to honor the legacy we have built while working toward a sustainable future.   It is in the spirit of striking this balance that I—along with our small but dedicated staff—have been singularly focused on streamlining and strengthening LEAP’s operations. This includes activating plans for board governance, honing our volunteer recruitment and retention strategy, taking the organization through a rebranding process, and maximizing our fundraising events.   Not unique to the nonprofit world, our biggest challenge is in amplifying our message so that more ears may hear and more hearts might be touched by our story. A major component of that is in better communicating metrics that matter and in being transparent about how funds are stewarded. As you peruse the following pages, my hope is that you will see how committed we are to upholding your trust and investment in LEAP.

When I first met him, 13-year-old Rajvendra had been suffering from a malformation since birth that affected where his large intestine ended. I was able to operate on him to help his condition in India last year. Afterward, I kept in touch with and helped direct his medical care with the local physicians and nurses in Damoh.  I was thrilled to see Rajvendra again this year. After examining him under anesthesia, it was evident that his condition was much improved. His quality of life had also been greatly restored, and he seemed happier, more vibrant and far more social. This would not be possible without the help of our local partners in Damoh.    I love the idea that I am helping manage the long-term care of a child living around the world who would otherwise not receive it. The fact that I have the opportunity to see his improvement with each mission trip, now for the third year, has truly been a blessing to me.  Dr. Ian Mitchell Pediatric General Surgeon and Medical Volunteer

Through our Mission Program, LEAP serves children with facial abnormalities, like cleft lip and palate, who are often shunned by their communities with no hope for a productive future. They have no access to quality medical care in their own countries and no resources to pay for the surgical procedures required to correct their deformities. Our free surgical services restore their features and empower them to return to their communities as welcomed, participating members. LEAP’s medical mission work has expanded to include urological, ophthalmological, orthodontic and dental, orthopedic, ENT, and general surgeries. LEAP also treats burn victims, amputees, and children with other debilitating and incapacitating medical issues.

COUNTRIES SERVED

By returning to the same countries every year, we are able to build trust, offer ongoing education, and continue caring for those who need long-term medical services. In some instances and when the need is great, LEAP will fund and/or build operating rooms, pediatric wards and clinics to advance the local medical and surgical care locally. LEAP’s most recent outreach in our Mission Program includes Belize, Dominican Republic, Haiti (biannually), India, and Zimbabwe.

One of our greatest highlights in 2014 was building a 2,000 sq. ft. multi-room, air-conditioned Pediatric Ward at Hôpital Espoir, our partner hospital in Port-au-Prince, Haiti. With a committed construction team led by a beloved LEAP donor, the build took only 16 days to complete. In 2015, more than 4,300 pediatric patients were medically evaluated thanks to the existence of the Pediatric Ward. Over 500 patients were hospitalized and admitted to the Pediatric Ward for medical care.

For as long as I can remember, I have wanted to be a nurse. While pursuing this dream, I was given the incredible opportunity to travel to Haiti with LEAP for the first time in 2014. I was blessed to get to assist in the Recovery Room with very talented nurses who were helpful teachers and extremely knowledgeable in their field. On the second day of surgery, I met a sweet baby named Rosmika. She had been operated on by Dr. Hobar to repair her cleft lip. As I watched, her eyes began opening and locked with my own for what seemed like hours. It felt like the world just stopped moving. This sweet baby touched my heart, and I continued to pray for her and her precious mother. This year, I returned to Haiti, along with another incredible team. As we pulled up to the hospital for the first day’s evaluations, I caught a glimpse of who I thought might just be Rosmika. I got out of the truck and made my way to see the sweet little angel who had touched my heart the previous year. As I approached her, I said, “Hi, Rosmika, you look so beautiful.” Her mother stood up with a smile and gave me a huge hug. My heart melted. It was her! To be able to physically see the complete healing of her lip, beautiful growth and noticeable development was absolutely wonderful. I am so thankful to have had the opportunity to travel with LEAP. I truly believe that this organization is changing the world! Maddie Pierce Medical Supplies Coordinator

14 countries reached. 42 patients served. The LEAP Landmark Program makes it possible for children with the most complex surgical needs who live in underserved areas of the world to travel to the U.S. to receive high-quality medical and surgical care. Many of the children served by LEAP Global Missions have such severe craniofacial abnormalities that they have been abandoned as infants or sent to palliative care facilities. We often fund or greatly reduce their travel and fully fund their surgical costs. Surgeries take place at Medical City Children’s Hospital. We also coordinate host families who offer these children a loving and safe environment while they recover and heal. In the history of this program, we have served eight orphaned children, seven of whom were adopted. The average age of Landmark recipients is 9 years old, and our most served country is the Dominican Republic, with 11 recipients. Other countries include Egypt, Kenya, Russia and Mexico. We provided care to three Landmark recipients in 2015: Danny from China, Neisha from Haiti and Elizabeth (‘Ely’) from Cuba.

Danny’s Story Danny was born with very severe facial deformities. He was abandoned as an infant and transported around Chinese orphanages for the first decade of his life. Without proper medical intervention, he was destined to spend the rest of his childhood as an orphan. When Danny arrived in Dallas, he had three complex surgeries over the course of several months, with later placement of a prosthetic eye. With his naturally sunny disposition, Danny adjusted well to living in the United States. His loving host family enrolled him in school full-time with a Mandarin-speaking special education teacher. He learned English, gained weight and confidence, and received weekly speech therapy. While undergoing a major physical transformation, his future also changed dramatically for the better. After learning of Danny’s story on social media, a family from Kansas City felt called to adopt him. He is now thriving as part of his forever family, which includes two brothers and three sisters.

Neisha is a Landmark recipient who was born in Haiti to a very loving family. When she was only an infant, her parents and grandmother first brought her to be evaluated by the LEAP team. When she turned 3 years old, she was finally old enough to travel to Dallas for the complex surgeries required to correct her hypertelorism, a very rare medical condition, as well as a complete cleft lip repair and partial nasal reconstruction. During recovery, I spent every day by her bedside to help care for Neisha and her mother, who was a bit overwhelmed in such a new, strange environment. After Neisha’s discharge from the hospital, she spent five weeks at our family’s ranch in Oklahoma, where she enjoyed interacting with the animals and learning to fish. She would often attend church service with us and was truly an exuberant angel, encouraging the congregation to stand up and sing the Lord’s praises. Neisha’s remaining surgeries will be done in Haiti when LEAP travels there and as she is ready. Her family is so grateful that, after enduring many cultural stigmas, Neisha is able to live a fuller, healthier life. I’m grateful to have met such a light-filled, sweet soul. LEAP is a nimble organization that is able to respond quickly to victims of natural disasters or war through our International Disaster Relief Program. We have partnered with the International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ISAPS) to form ISAPS-LEAP Surgical Relief Teams©, a global resource that can quickly deploy highly skilled plastic and reconstructive surgeons to assist areas hit by natural and/or man-made disasters. Most surgeries have taken place in Jordan, Turkey, and Lebanon to help Syrian refugees with war-related injuries, half of whom are children. ISAPS-LEAP Surgical Relief Teams© also quickly responded to the needs of victims after the devastating earthquake in Nepal.

This year, Dr. Andre Borsche performed surgery on a Syrian woman who was the victim of an acid attack by one of Bashar al-Assad’s security operatives. Because she lived in a war zone, there was no health care system to attend to her medical needs. Through our International Disaster Relief Program and its partnership with ISAPS, we were able to offer her assistance. The Guardian interviewed me for a story they wrote about this woman, calling her “one of the lucky ones.” I feel fortunate that we are able to offer healing where there is so much hurt. CUPCAKES FOR A CAUSE This sweet event takes place at University Park Methodist Church in Dallas, where cupcake bakers compete for a cause. The Okada family, longtime LEAP donors, started this event in 2011 as a fun way to bring the community together to raise money for LEAP. We were able to secure $51,000 from this event in 2015. LEAP FORE KIDS This event was inspired by avid junior golfer Madden Sinnes, who was born with an alveolar cleft lip. After discovering some children could not afford surgical care, Madden decided to fundraise on their behalf. In 2015, after two junior golf tournaments at Brookhaven Country Club, Madden and his family helped raise approximately $10,000 for our global children living in impoverished regions in the world. ANNUAL GALA  Our biggest annual fundraiser, the LEAP Gala, highlights the year’s most impactful moments and honors those who serve the organization. In 2015, the gala included a silent auction and special program at the Dallas Country Club. We raised $365,000 to support the mission.

FINANCIAL ACCOUNTABILITY

How do we allocate donations? Our goal at LEAP is to maximize our impact and minimize our costs. As such, 91% of general donations are utilized to offset direct program costs such as medical supplies, mission trip travel costs and compensation of mission specific staff. Description of special fundraising projects We appreciate our donors who enjoy funding a specific cause or purpose, and we are diligent about tracking each restricted donation and the expenses related to these funds. Ongoing opportunities for restricted donations include individual mission trips, the Landmark Program and the International Disaster Relief Program. On occasion, LEAP also supports special projects in the global communities we serve, such as funding an operating room, pediatric ward or other need in an identified community. LEAP evaluates these unique opportunities as they arise and communicates them to our valued donors and supporters. All restricted funds received by LEAP are utilized to support the projects designated by our donors. Financial accountability statement LEAP upholds its commitment to transparency, financial accountability, and integrity. We engage an independent accounting firm to perform an annual financial audit and prepare our Form 990. Donors have the opportunity to acquire a copy of LEAP’s most recent audited financial statements and Form 990 by contacting Emily Cook, CPA, at (972) 566-6307 or [email protected].

REBRAND

Two years ago, we began working toward developing a greater understanding of the LEAP brand personality and our strengths as an organization so that we could more consistently communicate with our stakeholders. That journey started with listening intently and unearthing key themes based on feedback from those who engage with us from various perspectives—as volunteers, patients, donors, leaders and key partners. The changes included a shift in name from LEAP Foundation to LEAP Global Missions to better represent the impact we’re making in the communities we serve through our Mission, Landmark and International Disaster Relief programs. Our updated logo and color palette captures a vibrant, modern visual identity reflective of our purpose and heart. The new website allows our team the ability to make updates in real time. Our blog, e-newsletter and social media accounts have been redesigned. Finally, we produced two short videos that beautifully capture the LEAP story.
