Before You Get Started

Class Ratings ExplainedClass Ratings ExplainedClass Ratings ExplainedClass Ratings Explained The class rating determines how much homework and outside time each class will require. Please consider these ratings carefully as you select your student’s schedule. Ratings will be followed closely throughout the year. The ratings are as follows: 1= No outside homework 2= Some outside homework, not to exceed 1 hour per week 3= Approximately 2 hours homework 4= Approximately 3 hours homework and parent involvement (1 hour teacher instruction, 3 hours parent-supervised work). 5= Approximately 4 hours homework and parent involvement (1 hour teacher instruction, 4-5 hours parent-supervised work).

Rated ClassesRated ClassesRated ClassesRated Classes The teacher will go over new material, instruction and practice problems for each week’s assigned lesson(s) to ensure understanding in class. Students will be expected to complete assignments for the week at home. Parents are responsible for ensuring follow-up work is completed, reviewing lessons as necessary, grading daily homework, protecting answer keys, and proctoring home study tests. Parents are required to oversee the work of the student and not depend on the 1 hour of in-class instruction to achieve mastery. Consistency in completing the lessons is crucial. Students will be tested regularly at home and in the classroom. All tests will be graded by the teacher. Please note - 4 and 5 rated classes may have some homework over the December break in order to maintain continuity of instruction and to allow the class to finish all required material on time.

Course OfferingsCourse OfferingsCourse OfferingsCourse Offerings aaaand Class Sizend Class Sizend Class Sizend Class Size This catalog includes all courses for all APEX sites and tracks. Some courses listed here may not be offered at the site you are attending or may not be offered this year. Please refer to your site’s class grid for current course offerings first and use this catalog as a reference. The APEX program works on a 10:1 student-teacher ratio which means that our courses average between five and fifteen students per class. Classes fill once the course maximum has been reached. Classes that do not reach a minimum enrollment of 3 students may be cancelled at the discretion of the program coordinator.

Dual Enrollment at Multiple APEX SitesDual Enrollment at Multiple APEX SitesDual Enrollment at Multiple APEX SitesDual Enrollment at Multiple APEX Sites In order to allow students to maintain the continuity of their science and math curriculum, APEX allows students in grades 8-12 who need to take a Science, Math, or World Language course that is not offered at their site to dual enroll into a 2nd APEX site for that course. In order to dual enroll, students must follow these guidelines: (1) the student must maintain a full schedule at his/her regular site, and (2) the student may not dual enroll in a course if that course is also offered at the student's regular site simply to avoid a schedule conflict unless that conflict is between science, math or world language courses. Students who choose the privilege of dual enrolling must join that site’s yahoo group and become fully responsible for following all scheduling changes due to site activities that might affect their course start or end time. Students are also expected to be on time and in attendance every week. If a dual enrolled student has three or more absences or tardies in their class, they may lose the privilege of staying enrolled in the course. Students are encouraged to carefully consider their overall course load before choosing to dual enroll.

Classes that “Can Be Repeated”Classes that “Can Be Repeated”Classes that “Can Be Repeated”Classes that “Can Be Repeated” Classes that are marked as “can be repeated” are designed so that a student taking the class two or more times in two sequential years will have different material each time. Classes that are marked as not available to be repeated can still be taken twice if the parent chooses to do so but the student will have the same class material as the last time he/she took the class. We are not able to provide additional lessons, resources, or differentiation to challenge students that have already taken a class if that class is not listed as “Can Be Repeated.”

Reading and Writing LevelReading and Writing LevelReading and Writing LevelReading and Writing Level All of our courses, regardless of rating, expect your student to have a grade appropriate reading and writing level to be successful. If you child is more than 2 years outside of his/her registered grade’s reading level, please contact the Program Coordinator prior to selecting classes.

MS HS Email AccessMS HS Email AccessMS HS Email AccessMS HS Email Access All students registered in grades 6-12 will be issued and expected to use a district Gmail account. Some classes may incorporate the use of the google drive, google classroom, and other google features associated with the student district email. Parents are encouraged to monitor their child’s email activity and internet usage.

Class Selection Instructions All Schedules must be submitted through our website

www.apexhomeschool.org

Select “15-16 Class Selection” from the “Classes” Menu

CLASS SELECTION BEGINS APRIL 1ST AT 7:00 AM

Please follow these instructions carefully as you select your final schedule for each

student in your household:

1. Students must complete ALL registration paperwork prior to submitting a schedule.

2. All Blue Track grade 3-8 students and all Silver Track grade 2-12 students must submit a schedule through our website. Students in K/1 and 2nd graders in the Blue track do not submit schedules. Paper schedules or schedules submitted through email will not be processed.

3. Select one class and one alternate for each period. Students will be placed in their selected classes on a first come/first served basis based on the day your schedule was received. If a class reaches its max, those students registering first will get in and the rest will be placed in their alternates and kept on a wait list for their first choice class. Your alternate MUST be different than your first choice or we may have to select a class for you. You will be notified if we place your child in an alternate class selection.

4. The grid is never perfect for everyone. There may be a period or two that you must choose a class that was not one you really wanted.

5. Carefully read the class grid and note all the classes available at your child’s grade level in each period. The numbers under the class name are the grades that class includes. Some

classes are shown under two teachers but are class. For all two hour block classes, students must take both hours.

6. Carefully read the course description prior to selecting a course for your child.

7. Carefully consider the class rating of each class before selecting the course to understand the amount of homework that class will require. See Page 2 for an explanation of the class rating system.

8. Check that the class fits your child’s ability. If you wish to enroll your child in a class that is above or below his/her grade level, please contact the program coordinator first. Some classes have placement testing required or consent of the instructor.

9. All our courses will be offered at least every other year. If you don’t see a class you need, it likely will appear on the grid again next year.

10. There will be a 3-4 week drop/add period in

the beginning of the school year during which

your students will have one final chance to make

changes to their schedules if something ends up

not being the right fit. All our classes are year-

long and we do not change classes at semester.

Kindergarten/1st Grade Program

Hands-on Fun and Exploration!

Our Kindergarten and First Grade students spend the majority of their day with their primary teachers and have a different schedule

than the rest of our students. Rather than changing classes each hour, their class subjects are integrated into units that incorporate

multiple subjects and projects across the curriculum. In addition to their primary program, students spend 30 minutes with our music teacher and 30 minutes with our PE teacher each day we meet.

Sample Schedule 8:30-9:00 morning meeting

9:00-9:45 art/science/social studies

9:45-10:00 snack/restroom break

10:00-10:45 math

10:45-11:15 recess

11:15-12:00 literature

12:00-12:30 lunch

12:30-1:00 PE

1:00-1:30 music

1:30-2:10 art/science/social studies

2:00-2:30 writing/journal

2:30-2:45 snack/restroom break

2:45-3:05 recess

3:05-3:25 clean up and story

3:25 dismissal

All subjects are taught with a focus on enrichment. The parent remains the primary educator and has primary responsibility for the

child’s sequential learning program. Our program is structured to be a valuable complement to what you are doing at home, touching on many different subject areas as listed below (note – some topics will be covered in Kindergarten and some in first grade but not all

topics in both years):

Math: Students will develop their number sense through

hands-on activities, games, stories and pencil with paper

practice. Targeted skills will include recognizing, writing,

counting and sequencing numbers. Additionally the students

will practice telling time, counting coins, creating patterns,

recognizing shapes, graphing, measurement, basic fractions and beginning addition and subtraction skills.

Science: Students will expand their world by investigating

scientific topics through hands-on experiments, activities and

stories. Topics might include insects, plants, animals, five senses, space, magnets, matter and weather.

Language Arts: Students will develop their early literacy skills

through a variety of language arts experiences. Areas of focus

will include handwriting, letter-sound recognition, word work

(e.g. beginning and ending sounds, rhyming and high frequency

words) and responding to literature through discussions,

drawings and writing. Students have many opportunities for simple writing projects across the curriculum.

Social Studies: Students will explore history, geography,

resources, and communities through collaborative, hands-on

projects.

Art: Using a variety of media, students will explore color,

texture, and shape to create individual works of art such as

mosaics, paintings and sculpture. Art will often be incorporated

into projects related to the other subject areas as well.

Music: Students will be singing songs, doing movement

activities, learning about basic music symbols, rhythm, and playing rhythm and pitched instruments.

Physical Education: Students will practice various locomotive

and movement patterns through a variety of games and

activities. As students learn the rules to various games and

activities, they will have the opportunity to practice good sportsmanship, safety, and teamwork

Blue Track 2nd Grade Program

Our Blue Track offers a unique 2nd grade program that mirrors our K/1 program in the morning. The students will spend the first three

hours of the day with their primary instructor, exploring units that include science, social studies, math, and language arts. They will have lunch and recess with rest of the students and then rotate together to art, PE, and music.
