Sue Else Chief Executive Officer

Dear Friends of Girl Scouts of Historic Georgia,

Girl Scouts of Historic Georgia has a challenge for you: lead like a G.I.R.L.! Don’t be intimidated - you can do it; our Girl Scouts do. We focus every day on helping girls become leaders, regardless of age or circumstance. And they overwhelm us everyday with their courage, smarts and accomplishment. Take Katie Rose Dionne for instance. Katie Rose recognized the issue of child hunger in her community and met the problem like a G.I.R.L. She worked with local farmers and her church to develop a unique program that made access to fresh produce more affordable and accessible. She earned her Gold Award in the process and was recently recognized by Girl Scouts of the U.S.A. as a National Young Woman of Distinction, the most prestigious honor awarded by our national organization. You can read more about her and some of our other remarkable G.I.R.L. Scouts in this report. So, what does it mean to lead like a G.I.R.L.? It means to be a go-getter, an innovator, a risk taker, a leader – all the things Girl Scouts become as they discover, connect and take action to affect the issues that matter to them. Every G.I.R.L. can change the world. We invite you to join us in our mission to prepare them to do just that.

Girl Scouts is the premier leadership organization for girls and an expert on their growth and development. We have identified three keys to leadership: girls Discover themselves and their values;Connect with others; and Take Action to make the world a better place. At Girl Scouts of Historic Georgia, everything centers on the girl—activities are girl-led, which gives girls the opportunity to learn by doing in a cooperative learning environment. To accomplish this, our programming focuses on 5 outcomes that help girls gain specific knowledge, skills, attitudes, behaviors and values. These outcomes work in tandem with the three keys to leadership. Combined, they make up the Girl Scout Leadership Experience. During the 2015-2016 Membership Year, Girl Scouts of Historic Georgia hosted 151 program events. The Girl Scout program is delivered through troop activities, camping, council-wide events, travel and product programs that link experiences, discussions and ideas for girls to explore together. As girls progress through the levels from Daisy to Ambassador, they acquire new and higher levels of knowledge and skills that progress to more challenging opportunities. These opportunities provide a deeper understanding of what it means to be a leader who makes a difference in the world.

Girl Scouts of Historic Georgia proudly owns and operates Girl Scout First Headquarters, the early Girl Scout meeting place. This year,

FHQ provided 4,795 people with tours, 669 people with ceremonies, and more

than 2,500 Girl Scouts with fun and educational programming!

youth who develop these five outcomes…Are happier, healthier, and less likely to engage in problem behaviors or be victimized.Youth who develop competencies such as perseverance, positive self-esteem, and sociability have lower rates of obesity, depression, and aggression, and show greater life satisfaction and well-being than those who do not develop such attributes/skills.

Achieve more academically and feel more engaged in school. Youth who participate in programs that promote the attributes and skills linked with our five outcomes show stronger academic performance and school engagement compared to those who do not. When students are more self-aware and confident about their learning capabilities, they try harder and persist in the face of challenges. Become strong job applicants. While employers want new hires to have technical knowledge related to a given job, those skills are not nearly as important as good teamwork, decision-making, and communication skills. Yet many employers around the world report that job candidates lack these attributes. Become successful, well-adjusted adults. Kindergarteners who learn how to share, cooperate with others, and be helpful are more likely to have a college degree and a job 20 years later than youth who lack these social skills. They are also less likely to have substance-abuse problems and run-ins with the law.

When girls participate in Girl Scouts, they benefit in 5 important ways:

stRong sEnsE oF sElF Girls have confidence in themselves and their abilities, and form positive identities. PositivE vAluEs Girls act ethically, honestly, and responsibly, and show concern for others. cHAllEngE sEEKing Girls take appropriate risks, try things even if they might fail, and learn from mistakes. HEAltHy RElAtionsHiPs Girls develop and maintain healthy relationships by communicating their feelingsdirectly and resolving conflicts constructively. coMMunity PRoBlEM solving Girls desire to contribute to the world in purposeful and meaningful ways, learn how to identify problems in the community, and create “action plans” to solve them.

Girl Scouts is for every girl, everywhere. Because when girls succeed, so doessociety. While participating in Girl Scouts is inexpensive compared to other extracurricular activities, we know that not every family can afford to have their daughter(s) participate. That’s why we offer membership, uniform, and program event assistance to hundreds of girls each year. Generous donors, grants, and other contributions help cover the cost of this assistance, and without it, many girls would not have the opportunity to participate. In addition, we actively reach out to girls for whom economic and social barriers or a lack of volunteers and transportation prevent participation in a traditional troop. For these girls, Girl Scout staff members provide the Girl Scout Leadership Program, focusing on life skills, building healthy relationships, and making positive decisions. When funding is available, they also go to camp. We know that Girl Scouting expands a girl’s world and changes her life!

Why do these 5 skills matter?Because when a Girl Scout has learned these skills, she’ll be poised for career success. Future employers will find that a Girl Scout is: • A girl who can set goals and meet deadlines. • A girl who works well with others. • A girl who understands customers. • A girl who can influence others. • A girl who is honest, trustworthy and reliable.

The world’s recent economic challenges have made one thing clear: financial literacy skills matter. However, there has been a gap when it comes to teaching young girls the skills they need. In order to have the same opportunities that boys do, experts say girls need to start learning about money as early as Kindergarten, and in Girl Scouts, they do! We offer all girls from kindergarteners to high school seniors the opportunity to build their business savvy and hone their financial literacy skills. They do this through the Fall Product and Girl Scout Cookie Programs where each girl learns five important skills.

Through Girl Scouts’ product programs, girls learn the essential skills they need

to become effective leaders.

Girl Scouts provides amazing opportunities for girls to develop and grow a love for the great outdoors. Camp is an integral part of Girl Scouting. It is the place where the skills and values a girl learns in her Girl Scout troop, at a Girl Scout event, and throughout the school year, are put into action. She exercises her independence when she spends a night away from home. She musters up her courage to tackle the climbing wall. She builds character when she shares responsibilities with her tentmates. She succeeds and she fails, in a supportiveenvironment surrounded by friends, both old and new.

Every year, ten exceptionally inspiring Girl Scout Gold Award recipients from across the country are chosen as National Young Women of Distinction (NYWOD), and Girl Scouts of Historic Georgia is proud to have our first National Young Woman of Distinction this year.

Katie Dionne created a program called “Sow More, Grow More” to help feed hungry chil-dren and their families in Hall County, Georgia. The program ran for 23 weeks and generated over 1,400 pounds of fresh food, serving 2,200 families. Katie worked with local farmers and gardeners to donate their surplus fruits and vegetables to the community food pantry for distribution to impoverished families. She also provided recipe cards (in English and Spanish) incorporating commonly donated produce, with information about low-cost meal prepa-ration. The program is now in its third year.
