Preface

Hello, At Penn State, we firmly believe that the premier educational delivery system in the nation today is a total agricultural education program that encompasses dynamic classroom instruction, youth leadership development through a Career and Technical Student Organization (FFA) and Laboratory/Work-Based Experiential Education (SAE). A school-based secondary agricultural education program that delivers on those components will have a positive impact on student achievement. Just as the fastest race car needs a reliable driver, the greatest program, needs a capable leader to provide direction. The single most important element to the success of any education program is the teacher. We are pleased to offer you this teacher candidate profile book to introduce you to our 2014 agricultural teacher candidates who are prepared and excited to embrace the challenge of making a positive difference in the lives of students through agricultural education. Please contact us if we can be of assistance or if you have any questions regarding our teacher preparation program. Developing great agricultural teachers is something we take incredible pride in. Yours in quality education,

Dr. Daniel D. Foster Dr. John C. Ewing Student Teacher Coord. Undergraduate Program Coord. [email protected] [email protected] 814-863-0192 814-863-7463

"Mackenzie McCollum is a welcome addition to our faculty at Danville Area Middle School. She brings the Science classroom to life through engaging,

inquiry-based lessons that are student-centered. Ms. McCollum implemented a new CASE course within her first year of teaching. She

represents the best of the profession among new teachers." Dawn Brookhart, Director of Curriculum, Instruction, and Technology Danville Middle School Danville, PA

2013 Graduate Mackenzie McCollum

I am pleased to write about how fortunate we are to have acquired Cameron Schirmer at Mohawk. PSU obviously has a strong command of aligning their teacher preparation program to the needs of public schools across the commonwealth. Mr. Schirmer has taken theory into hands-on practical vocational/agricultural experience. There was little or no acclimation period! Our students are being well instructed for a bright future.

Raymond C. Omer, Principal Mohawk Jr-Sr High School Bessemer, PA

2012 Graduate Cameron Schirmer

Amanda embraced quickly changing to a different part of the world to create a brand new agriscience program for our district. She was able to create from the ground up a

philosophical sound program incorporating a new FFA Chapter, Supervised Agricultural Experience and

dynamic STEM based instruction.

Laura Polatnick has demonstrated effective teaching in both formal and informal

observations. She is working with students well as she has a nice rapport with

them and is able to weave instructional, hands on and affective activities into her

daily teaching. I appreciate her talents and look forward to her growth here at WMS

as at the agriculture teacher. Thanks and good job with Laura!

Donald D. Curtis, Principal Wilson Middle School Fishersville, Virginia

2011 Graduate Laura Polatnick

Lyndsay Wilcox has been a tremendous addition to Benjamin Franklin High School #239! She has single-handedly created an Agriculture Program in the middle of South Baltimore, a place which has been defined as a food desert! Urban Agriculture in our neighborhoods is a must and is a foreign concept to our kids. She is not only making a difference in their lives, but also in the lives of their family members! We are so lucky to have her on our team!

Chris Battaglia, Principal Benjamin Franklin High School at Masonville Cove #239 Baltimore, MD

2010 Graduate, Lyndsay Wilcox (Wallace) We are fortunate to have a recent hire at Tulpehocken JSHS. Mr. Eugene Kreitzer was hired two years ago when we had a retirement. Gene has been a great addition to our faculty. He has inspired our students with creative learning experiences, specifically in our Ag Mech program. He is a positive advocate for students and an excellent ambassador for the Penn State Agricultural Education Teacher Preparation Program. We are fortunate to have Mr. Kreitzer as part of our faculty.

"As a beginning teacher, I am thankful for the relevance and practicality of the assignments and course work within the Penn State program. I am frequently

using assignments and lesson plans that I developed during my courses and student-teaching internship, which demonstrates the insight of the Teacher Education staff to prepare students for their future career in education."

2013 Graduate, Darla Romberger Cumberland Valley High School, Mechanicsburg, PA

"When I walked off the stage with my diploma I knew beyond a shadow of a doubt I was going to be a successful teacher because the Penn State Ag. Ed. program and the wonderful teachers, like Dr. Foster and Dr. Ewing, prepared me for any school, in any state, regardless of the school's agricultural pathway. I don't always know the answers, but thanks to the Ag. Ed. program I have so many tools in my toolbox that when something doesn't work I don't panic I just reach in my toolbox and try something else. I think the biggest thing I learned is to never stop learning and ALWAYS be a reflective practitioner. I have had a lot

of successes this year and it is because Dr. Foster trained me to always think, "What if I did this instead of this..." I am constantly looking back over my taught lessons and trying to make it better, and more meaningful for my students-this is a quality I don't think a lot of universities try to instill in their students, but thankfully Penn State does."

2013 Graduate, Britteny Marsh AAEC Red Mountain Early College High School, Mesa, Arizona Ag Science Instructor “Penn State Ag Ed continually supports their graduates even after graduation and job placement. I've been teaching five hundred miles from State College for two years, yet I've had continual contact and a visit to my program and school. My Penn State advisor has given me great support and helped build my program with suggestions and wisdom. I was supported through the exciting time of transitioning to a new state and school. My education only took four years but I know I'm always part of the Ag Ed Family at Penn State.”

“Penn State’s agricultural education program has prepared me for more than simply being a good teacher. They have helped me develop a list of resources and experts in which to glean information from. My network of proven ag teachers has grown tremendously over the years and Penn State can be commended for this. You can rest asure that any agriculture education student from Penn State is prepared to be the best ag teacher anywhere in the United States!”

2012 Graduate, Philip Haussener Cedar Crest High School, Lebanon, PA Agricultural Science Teacher

“Penn State Graduates are worth investing in due to the quality of education they received. Penn Staters are passionate about agriculture, education, and learning. They are better equipped to engage students in the learning process and assist with Supervised Agricultural Experiences (SAE), and FFA activities. PSU Ag Ed Grads are trained by the best and are exposed to different educational practices.”

2011 Graduate, Krista Moser Harold S. Vincent High School, Milwaukee, WI

Agricultural Science Instructor

“Penn State’s Agricultural Education Program has more than prepared me to meet the everyday demands experienced in the life of an involved agricultural educator. Not only did they teach me the importance of practice, preparation, mastery of content knowledge and understanding of the total agricultural education program, but they have instilled in me many teaching techniques which I have been able to use in order to be efficient, effective and successful in the classroom. The expectations,

relevancy and practicality within Penn State's program allows for personal growth and individualized professional development. I highly value and am thankful for the support that I continue to receive from the Penn State Agricultural Education Program, as it provides me with valuable resources, networking and professional development opportunities to uniquely expand and master my profession more each and every day.”

Why teach agriculture? With the number of urban areas increasing, the knowledge of how food gets from farm to table is diminishing rapidly. This makes the call for agricultural teachers greater than ever. I originally came to Penn State knowing that I wanted to be in the College of Agricultural Sciences but did not exactly know which path I would take. It was suggested that I go into Animal Sciences since I had a love of animals and people. However, during my time in that major I realized that I preferred working with people rather than animals and that the only thing I missed from high school were the opportunities that FFA presented. Then, I decided that I would like to make sure that those opportunities are available to other students. I believe it is important for students to become informed consumers and to know how their food gets from the farm to their table, or to know that food comes from a farm! Agricultural education goes above and beyond just teaching students about food; it includes leadership and communication as well as nature preservation. Agricultural education helps students to grow and mature into productive members of society and I want to be a part of that growth.

Education B.S., Agricultural & Extension Education, The Pennsylvania State University H.S. Diploma, Penns Valley Area High School, Centre County, PA

What type of program would you like to have? First and foremost, I want to have an agricultural program where students feel safe and free to explore the

world at their fingertips. After establishing this, I would like to strongly reflect the three circle model of

classroom/laboratory instruction, SAE, and FFA. I would ideally like all my students to be active members with

their SAEs, but I know that a program first has to be established. I know all my goals will not be accomplished

over night, but will only be attained through determination and dedication. I also strongly believe that it takes

a community to raise a child. I want my program to be deeply integrated with the community through

community service and by using community resources.

Why teach agriculture? I had a passion for agriculture instilled in me at a very young age. The agriculture industry serves everyone every single day. I have witnessed the ever growing gap that exists between the producers and the consumers. I believe that we must do what we can to narrow that gap in order to create a better tomorrow. The youth of today are the future; therefore, I want to combine my passion for the agriculture industry and my desire to help prepare a brighter future by teaching agriculture.

Why teach agriculture? Agriculture is a diverse, ever changing field. It allows teachers the ability to give students a well-rounded education through many opportunities. Agriculture educators make a difference in the lives of their student’s every day. I want to be able to make a difference in the life of a student, just like my advisor did for me. I want to be able to help students with their core subjects through an engaging, interesting venue. Agriculture education is that venue. It has a place for every student, and the ability to make education happen.

able to provide my students with the best well rounded program that is possible. When students find

their passion they can learn so much more than just the curriculum. This will allow me to reach more

students and be a positive agent of change in their lives. This program would include a diverse facility

where all of these classes could take place and give birth to learning and personal growth.

Why teach agriculture? Thomas Jefferson once said, “Agriculture…is our wisest pursuit, because it will in the end contribute most to real wealth, good morals, and happiness.” As a foundation of civilization and the core of our livelihood, agriculture and literacy of such will be fundamental in progressing towards global solutions that we all must be engaged in. For that reason, I feel obliged to pursue a career that would utilize knowledge of agriculture, in an educational setting, in order to reach some of these solutions. It is only because of this mindset that my pursuit of a career in education has been focused on agricultural education.

What type of program would you like to have? An ideal agricultural education program, to me, includes integrated curriculum with interdepartmental collaboration and global competency development. The laboratories and facilities would reflect industry standard and be used regularly. I would like a 2 teacher department in order to maximize the possibility for consistent supervision of all student SAEs and participation in all FFA events that students have an interest in. Curriculum would be school supported but student driven, with inquiry and problem based learning as a core model for student-focused instruction. I would take advantage of all opportunities to travel, even internationally, in order to build global competency of my students and increase their cultural experiences. And, finally, I would be a consistently motivated and dedicated teacher, pouring into the lives and education of all students to maximize the success in their personal and academic lives.

Why teach agriculture? With agriculture being a growing aspect of the world today, why not be an agricultural educator? This is why I chose to become an agricultural educator. I believe in the future of agriculture and in the need for the American citizens to be informed about all aspects of this growing field. My passion for agriculture has been around for my entire life. Through my activities as a 4-H member, then leader and my experiences working with my former agricultural teacher, I found a calling. I believe that agriculture is growing and always will be. I want to be an educator that makes a difference in the students’ lives by providing them with the skills needed to work in any field and to reach their full potentials.

What type of program would you like to have? My ideal agricultural program is one that is well-rounded including all three circles of a total agricultural education model. Having a background in veterinary science, my ideal program would also have this as an option for the students. However, I would also love to have a program where shop was high on the list. In order for students to gain life-long skills, they need to get the chance to work hands on in the shop.

Why teach agriculture? What happens tomorrow is fully dependent on agriculture. Since I was young I have always wanted to educate others about agriculture. As I grew up and became more involved in 4-H and FFA I learned how much of an impact it had on our society but also how uneducated people are about what agriculture is. I want to make a difference in students’ lives by exposing them to new opportunities and experiences both for career success and personal growth.

Education B.S., Agricultural & Extension Education, The Pennsylvania State University H.S. Diploma, Dover Area High School, York County, PA

Relevant Experiences Since 2007 I have been in leadership positions that were dependent upon my performance and ability as an individual for success. My involvement with the National Junior Angus Association planning national level shows has developed my skills in communication and ability to accomplish large goals. FFA and 4-H supported me to prepare me as an individual. Collegiately I continue to position myself to advocate for agriculture in the Colligate Cattlewomen. I have sharpened by communication and decision making skills by being a member of the Penn State Livestock Judging Team. My experiences have molded me to be a self-determined person to make practical and reputable decisions and dreams reality.

What type of program would you like to have? As an Agricultural Educator I wish to develop a program that is self-sustainable in that the students develop and implement activities that are realistic and worthy to the community and that the next generation of students can use and build upon. I feel the most important piece of Agriculture Education is the classroom background and development. Through my student teaching experience with CASE I believe in the ability to make science, math and technology applicable and realistic to agriculture while expanding and pushing students to think deeper about the curriculum. Followed by classroom are strong supportive FFA program and SAE programs flourished with student opportunity.

Why teach agriculture? I chose to pursue an agricultural education degree because of its diverse content material. Having an environmental background, I was lacking in the other aspects of agriculture. With the multitude of classes that I completed throughout the years at Penn State, I was able to learn many new subjects and information, broadening my horizons, to properly implement an all-around educational program.

What type of program would you like to have? I would like to get into an agriculture program where I could teach subjects such as Environmental Science, Natural Resource Management, Wildlife and Aquatics, Forestry, Plant Sciences, and to add a shop aspect, work with types of wood or other woodworking classes. My ideal position would be part of either a two or three person agriculture department, having different course paths for a wide range of students. I would like to have some interactive learning and be able to truly put my students in hands-on experiences if possible. I do not feel opposed to leaving Pennsylvania to travel into an agriculture program in another state, or even build a program with another teacher, if that is the scenario.

Why teach agriculture?

I chose to pursue a degree in agriculture education because I want to help inspire students to become passionate about agriculture. I was fortunate enough to have so many positive influences in my life within the agriculture industry. I really hope that I can do that for my students some day! I want them to know that agriculture is cool and you can have so much fun with it!

What type of program would you like to have? I would love to have a program that encompasses the Three Circle Model with an emphasis on place based education. I believe that it is important for students to learn about the world around them and think that by focusing on aspects of environmental and wildlife sciences students will become more aware of what their “backyard” environment has to offer. I also would love to offer courses in agriculture mechanics, horticulture, and animal sciences to create a well-rounded agriculture experience.

Why teach agriculture? Agriculture is Pennsylvania’s number one industry and a keystone of our nation’s economic backbone, yet there is such a disconnect between producers and consumers. That is why I believe in and have chosen to be an active advocate for the agricultural industry that has enabled me to achieve and accomplish so much in my life through agriculture education.

What type of program would you like to have? It is my dream to endow every student with the basic knowledge of the agricultural industry by providing them with a complete agricultural program based on the three circle model. My idea areas of focus would be animal science, environmental science, and horticulture. Additionally this program would encourage students to participate in FFA/4-H activities as well as develop an SAE program related to the individual interest and post-secondary goals.

Why teach agriculture? I chose to teach agriculture because I am passionate about the youth of tomorrow! I believe that what we do today affects tomorrow, we have only a few years to influence the minds of young people. With so many different content areas and opportunities available through the program of agricultural education it is the best avenue for reaching students, sparking their interest, and finding their passion.

Relevant Experiences Growing up on a dairy farm I was able to have hands on learning every day for 18 years. During that time I was very involved in 4-H and FFA holding various leadership positions in both organizations including secretary, reporter, vice-president, and president. I began my college career at Penn State Altoona where I was actively involved in the Ag Club, for one year I held the position of secretary for the club. After completing my first two years at a commonwealth campus I transferred to University Park. While there I was involved in the Teach Ag Society as well as being a dues paying member of the Collegiate FFA. During the first summer of college I had the opportunity to work for Country View Family farms as an intern which turned into a part time job during summer and winter breaks. The summer of 2013, prior to my senior year of college, I worked as a summer intern for Penn State Extension.

What type of program would you like to have? In my ideal agricultural program the curriculum would be student and community driven; preferably operating on the Ag production CIP code. The FFA would be student led with me as an advisor to the program. Students would take charge of their program and handle raising funds, providing educational opportunities to their chapter and the community, and promoting the program. Student Supervised Agricultural Experiences (SAEs) would be closely related to the curriculum yet allowing students to explore their own interests and build upon their personal experiences.

Why teach agriculture? Agricultural education programs give us a chance to truly touch a student’s life. Through classroom instruction, FFA and SAE; Agricultural education offers a full spectrum approach to learning. It is proven that students learn in different ways, the structure of a successful agricultural program teaches to all the different learning styles. The three circle model (FFA, SAE, and classroom/laboratory) allows agricultural education to be the premier delivery system.

Education B.S., Agricultural & Extension Education, The Pennsylvania State University A.S., Business Administration, Butler County Community College H.S. Diploma, Moniteau High School, Butler County, PA

Relevant Experiences I was born and raised on a family farm in Butler County, Pa; that specialized in crop and livestock production. I raced professional barrel horses my entire life and then through FFA, I gained production and show experience with all types of livestock. Through the farm and FFA, I have had many experiences in the agricultural mechanics field and feel competent in that area. I have taken a non-traditional path, in completing my education which has allowed me to enhance my content knowledge and professional network. I have also had the opportunity to be a horseback riding instructor and to present livestock showmanship at various community clinics.

Activities, Awards and Honors I was an active member of the FFA, which I was honored to receive the FFA American Degree through my supervised agricultural experience program. I have achieved monumental show ring successes with livestock. I am honored to have 3.9 GPA and to have made both the dean’s and president’s list at both Penn State and Butler County Community College. Additionally, I have been inducted into the honor society of two year colleges Phi Theta Kappa, honor society of agricultural education Alpha Tau Alpha, honor society of agricultural sciences Gamma Sigma Delta, and finally the honor of Penn State Phi Kappa Phi.

What type of program would you like to have? My ideal program would be developed around the three circle model; including FFA, SAE, and classroom instruction/laboratory. I am ideally searching for a program that specializes in production agriculture. My desire is to teach a well-rounded curriculum that includes animal science, environmental and agriculture mechanics.

Why teach agriculture? I want to teach agriculture to inspire and prepare students to solve today’s and tomorrow’s agricultural challenges at both the local and global levels. With the challenges of feeding an incredibly expanding global population, I want to use agricultural education to prepare future leaders not only in the agricultural sector, but within society to develop agriculturally literate citizens. While at Penn State, I truly discovered my passion for both agriculture and student success, and I look forward to making a positive impact on both my students and the agricultural sector as an agricultural educator.

Why teach agriculture? Maya Angelou is quoted as saying, “When you know better you do better.” Through formal education, we instruct students on the concepts needed to be successful in life from an academic standpoint. Agricultural Education has, and continues to serve as a vehicle to teach Science, Math, English and other standards, yet uses the applicability of the leading industry in the nation to do so. It allows for students to engage in and outside of the classroom through experiences in FFA alongside the inclusion of a Supervised Agricultural Experience and involvement in the FFA. Agricultural education provides experiences to teach students 21st Century Skills that will make them competitive in any job market by not only teaching academic standards, but soft skills that are essential for any career path, allowing them to “do better.”

Education B.S., Agricultural & Extension Education, The Pennsylvania State University H.S. Diploma, Juniata Valley High School, Huntingdon County, PA

Relevant Experiences I grew up on a family owned livestock farm in Central Pennsylvania. The sheep that my family continues to raise and show nationally started out as my Supervised Agricultural Experience (SAE). After High School, I served as a 2009-2010 Pennsylvania State FFA Officer and then as Pennsylvania FFA’s National Officer Candidate in 2011. I continued with leadership roles in Penn State Collegiate FFA, AgAdvocates, TeachAg! Society, TeachAg! Avengers, and other clubs around the College of Agricultural Sciences. To supplement my formal education, I completed a marketing internship with New Holland Agriculture and a comprehensive summer internship with AgChoice Farm Credit. I am also active on the board of directors of the PA FFA Alumni and PA Young Farmers.

What type of program would you like to have? My ideal program would be well-rounded, and student centered. It should be reflective of the needs of the community and utilize community resources when available and appropriate and reach across the curriculum to provide opportunities for co-curricular instruction. The program will be reflective of the Three-Circle Model, making connections between classroom and laboratory instruction, Supervised Agricultural Experiences, and the FFA. I envision my program reaching 100% inclusion of SAE and 100% FFA membership of all students enrolled in classroom instruction. Most importantly, all efforts of the program will foster student success and achievement.
