2014 World Tournament
New York had a wonderful showing in Hamburg at the World Tournament. The organizer’s did a wonderful job pulling this together. You all should be praised
for your dedication and fortitude in getting the job done. I would like to thank Frank Kwiatkowski for providing me with the minutes of all WT meetings, so it could be posted on the website to keep our charter abreast of what was going on. New York had 176 of its members participate. I hope it was a wonderful experience for all. Those of you that placed “in the money” the results are provided on page 3 and congratulations goes out to all of you! This past summer I worked on a pamphlet to promote horseshoes
in New York State. At the State Tournament, Labor Day Week-
end, they were available for the taking. I think they could be
passed out at fairs, festivals, hotels, rest areas, restaurants, bulle-
tin boards the list could be endless. Anyone that would like cop-
ies let me know. Eventually, I will post a PDF file on the website
so that any individual can print them off.
Keep Our Sport Alive By Promoting!
~Karen
Congratulations Ernie Pound
Sincerely,
Frank Kwiatkowski
Hi everyone let me begin by saying thank you for having the confidence in me to be the next NYSHPA president and ensure you that I will do my best to deal with our charters business. As your president, I look forward to working with all of our NY clubs and will be seeking at least one person from each club to be a direct e-mail contact for me. Who will be willing to contact their club member to get their opinions and feedback so that when, we as a char-ter, face a problem we get every clubs input not just one or two. I will always try to keep an open mind and make decisions that are best for the char-ter and will benefit the majority of our members. Club members who are willing to work with me please forward your names, phone numbers and e-mail addresses to [email protected] or call me at 716-627-4708. Another issue that is very important to our charter, which will not have any easy answer, regards new memberships. I look forward to hearing any and all ideas on this subject and together we can work on this and find ways to entice the many horseshoe players that are out there to take the next step up to sanctioned tournaments or at least get involved with their local clubs. In closing I would like to give a brief update re-garding the funds from the WT which were sent to Bob Klock. The WT committee gave the NYSHPA $2500 and designated that the funds be distributed as follows: $500 to go into the Junior’s fund, $1100 for the NYSHPA to promote its charter and use as needed and finally $900 to placed in the Elders Championship fund to cover the 2015 and 2016 State Tournament Championship round. The funds for the elders is just a temporary answer to an on going problem and we will need to work on equal-izing the championship rounds without taking away from others. There are some great ideas out there regarding this problem and now we have a little breathing room to work on them.

New York State Doubles
Due to the inclement weather the State Doubles at Pine Grove was can-
celed and then re-scheduled to be played in Groton at the Tri-County HC on Oct
25th. The first 18 teams were taken on a first come/first serve basis. Once the
decision was made word had traveled like wildfire thanks email and social me-
dia.
The winner of the “Lottery Tree Raffle”, that was at Pine Grove, was Ken Fraser
of North Bay. Pine Grove HC thanks everyone for their support.
Results of the State Doubles are listed on Page 4.

World Tournament Live Feed
At the World Tournament, in Hamburg, there were four (4) cameras set-up around the event center. These cameras were
live feed around the clock and were a big hit. During the 2 week event, the live feed, had over 400,000 hits. I, for one,
watched from home the first week of competition. The NHPA is hoping to add even more cameras in the future. Stu Sip-
ma, NHPA President, said he would like to have a camera facing each end of the court so we could see the pitchers and
see where the shoe actually lands.

Ralph Whitney from Chautauqua Lake Horseshoe Club, reports that may be losing their courts that are located behind a
bowling alley due to its closing. This past August, Ralph had to cancel their yearly sanction-singles tournament as they had
no guarantees that pitching could take place there. Lets hope they are able to find a new home and be stronger than ever.
Ernie Pound reports that on Mother’s Day, at the Montour Moose Club, they raised $600 for the junior fund. He would like
to give special thanks to John Martin & the Klock family for their special donations as well as the Montour Moose Club and
all their great helpers.
Not only is New York Horseshoes on Facebook but also, The Floyd Horseshoe Club, HP Pro
Tour, National Horseshoe Pitcher’s Assoc., Waterloo Ringers. Anyone else using social me-
dia to promote their club?

MY
BEST RINGER
Submitted by Rowland Rupp
(Reprint from Feb 2004 Mud)
Do you have a “best” ringer, one that came at just the right time or place? Perhaps
it won a game or a tournament or just occurred at a dramatic moment. I’ll bet most
of us have. Maybe we need a column in the Mud “My Best Ringer”. Here’s mine.
One day, long, long ago, almost forty-five years ago, two of my friends were visiting
at my summer cottage. They took out our boat with its 60 horsepower outboard
engine for a spin around the lake. When they returned they were confronted with a
rowboat powered by a small motor that persisted in getting in their way. As I
watched this episode, I noticed a fellow standing on a dock watching also, obviously
a planted witness for the event. Since the operator of the small boat was the original
grumpy old man, I concluded he sought to register a witnessed complaint about an
incident of his own making.
After my friends docked, we went to the yard to throw some horseshoes. As I was
about to pitch, I saw a State Trooper car barrel down our dirt road with a passenger,
who, I had no doubt, would turn out to be the grumpy old man. As is the nature of
cops, he assertively brought his car to a halt right across the horseshoe court to
make sure he had our full attention.
I had one shoe left—what to do? Throw it, of course. I would like to say it sailed
across the trooper’s car hood, but perhaps it was only his bumper, though I hope it
was his hood. In any case, it was a RINGER! If you’re going to throw a shoe across
a trooper’s car with the trooper sitting in it, throw a ringer, it has a better impact (no
pun intended). I think it set the appropriate tone for the ensuing discussion.
If you’re wondering about the outcome, it was this...The claims made by the grumpy
old man were so fantastic that the trooper was obliged to dismiss them. He merely
admonished us to drive prudently (good advice for all occasions), and drove off with
an undamaged hood and the grumpy old man. That’s my best ringer, what’s yours?
P.S. For those of you who have pitched with me, you may recall I throw a fairly low,
hard shoe. That day forty-five years ago was no exception.

What you need to know about getting or renewing your NYSHPA sanction card. Where it says club affiliation this is the
club that you choose to have your vote accounted for or you represent that club at the spring meeting (many belong to
more than one club). Having said that, this will take effect the following card year. Ex. If in 2013, you were Independent
then in 2014 you listed Mid-Hudson, you cannot represent Mid-Hudson until 2015.
You also may not realize that you will not receive the “MUD” newsletter after February if you have not renewed your
membership. So it is best to renew early do not wait until May or later as you will miss out on the May issue. Our May
issue houses the tournament schedule for the summer, state tournament sites, championship application just to name a
few articles.
More courts added in Corning, NY at the Crystal City VFW Post 524. They have built 20 new courts. Gravel surface and
lighting will be added shortly. League play is on Thursday evening. Other courts in the area are the campground in
Campbell, 10 courts and pitch on Monday & Thursday. Country Pub 2 on Meads Creek Rd. in Painted Post have 12 courts
they pitch on Monday & Wednesday. There is also the Al Buckland League, the have 2 classes A & B they travel from one
bar to another on Tuesday.
