A Prayer to the Most Holy Theotokos By St Peter of Damascus

O Blessed Queen of the Universe, Thou knowest that we sinners have no intimacy

with God Whom Thou hast Borne. But, putting our trust in Thee,

through Thy Mediation we Thy servants prostrate ourselves before the Lord: for Thou can freely approach Him

since He is Thy Son and our God. Thus I, too, unworthy Believer that I am,

Entreat Thee, Holy Queen, that I may be allowed to perceive

the Gifts of Grace bestowed on Thee and on the other Saints,

and to understand how Thou displays so many Virtues.

Simply by Thy Birth Giving to the Son of God Thou excels beyond all other beings.

For He Who, as Creator of all, knows all things before they come into existence,

found Thy Womb worthy of His Indwelling.

Bless the Lord, O my soul: O Lord my God, Thou art exceedingly great.

Thou hast put on praise and beauty: and art clothed with Light as with a garment;

Who stretched out the heavens like a pavilion; Who covers the higher rooms thereof with water; Who makes the clouds Thy Chariot; Who walks upon the wings of the winds

Who makes Thine Angels spirits: and Thine Ministers a Burning Fire;

Who has founded the Earth upon its own bases: it shall not be moved forever and ever.

The deep, like a garment, is its clothing: above the mountains shall the waters stand.

At Thy rebuke they shall flee: at the Voice of Thy thunder they shall fear.

The mountains ascend, and the plains descend into the place which Thou hast founded for them.

Thou hast set a bound which they shall not pass over; neither shall they return to cover the Earth.

Thou send forth springs in the vales: between the midst of the hills the waters shall pass.

All the beasts of the field shall drink: the wild asses shall expect in their thirst

Over them the birds of the air shall dwell: from the midst of the rocks they shall give forth their voices.

Thou waters the hills from Thine Upper Rooms: the earth shall be filled with the fruit of Thy Works: bringing forth grass for cattle, and herb for the service of men.

That Thou may bring bread out of the earth: and that wine may cheer the heart of mankind.

That he may make his face cheerful with oil: and that bread may strengthen his heart.

The trees of the field shall be filled, and in the cedars of Lebanon, which He has planted, the sparrows shall make their nests; the highest of them is the nest of the heron.

The high hills are a refuge for the deer, the rock for the hares.

He has made the moon for seasons: the sun knows its setting.

Thou hast appointed darkness, and it is night: in it shall all the beasts of the woods go about:

The young lions roaring after their prey, and seeking their meat from God.

The sun rises, and they are gathered together: and they shall lie down in their dens.

Man shall go forth to his work, and to his labour until the evening.

How great are Thy Works, O Lord! Thou has made all things in Wisdom: The Earth is filled with Thy Riches.

So is this great sea that stretches wide its arms: there are creeping things without number: creatures small and great.

Dispensation of Christ God - and with Joy preparing Thy Body, which was the God-Receiving Originator of Life, O Most Glorified One, while the Most Holy and Honoured Angels looked from on High - struck with astonishment and surprise - and saying one to another:

Lift your Gates and receive the Mother of the Maker of Heaven and Earth! Let us Laud with songs of praise Her Sanctified, Noble Body, which contained the Lord, invisible to us!

Therefore we, too, celebrate Thy Memory, O All-praised One crying: Exalt the State of Christians and Save our souls.

5ST SYMEON WAS ONE OF 70 ERUDITE HEBREW PRIESTS CHOSEN TO TRANSLATE THE ANCIENT SACRED HEBREW TEXTS INTO HELLENISTIC

GREEK, WHICH HAD BECOME THE LANGUAGE OF THE WORLD - CIRCA 200 BC - KNOWN AS THE SEPTUAGINT. BUT WHEN HE CAME TO THE WORD “VIRGIN” CONCERNING THE MESSIANIC BIRTH, HE WANTED TO CHANGE IT TO “YOUNG WOMAN.”

HOWEVER, BEFORE HE COULD MAKE SUCH A TERRIBLE ERROR, GOD SENT ARCHANGEL GABRIEL TO ENLIGHTEN HIM AND TO PROMISE HIM THAT HE WOULD LIVE TO SEE THE MESSIAH. A FEW CENTURIES LATER, HAVING WATCHED THE BLESSED VIRGIN MARY GROW UP IN THE TEMPLE, AND KNOWING HER MOST SPECIAL QUALITIES OF ABSOLUTE PIOUS HUMILITY AND OBEDIENCE TO GOD, HE REJOICED AND WAS READY TO REPOSE AT THE AGE OF 325 YEARS!! (PROVING HOW ANYTHING IS POSSIBLE BY THE WILL OF GOD!)

ST SYMEON’S FINAL DUTY TO GOD WAS TO CIRCUMCISE HIS INCARNATE SON, OUR LORD AND SAVIOUR, JESUS CHRIST.

Having placed Thy soul between His Holy Hands, Intercede with Him, O Undefiled One, to Save our souls.

V E R S E Arise, O Lord, from Thy Resting Place: O Thou and the Ark whom Thou has Sanctified.

O Most Holy and Undefiled Virgin, the multitudes of Angels in Heaven and mankind on earth Bless Thine All-Honoured Falling Asleep; for Thou became a Mother to Christ God, the Creator of all. We Supplicate Thee that Thou may continually Intercede with Him for our sakes, who place our hope - after God - on Thee, O All-Praised, Unwedded Theotokos.

V E R S E The Lord has sworn in Truth to David: He will not turn from it.

Let us, O people, sing to Christ God today with the Song of David who said: The Virgins who follow Her shall be brought before the King, with Gladness and Rejoicing. For She who is of the Seed of David, through whom we have been Deified, has been Translated at the Hands of Her Son and Master with surpassing Glory. Wherefore, Save us who Confess that Thou art the Theotokos from every tribulation, and Deliver our souls from danger.

When Thou was Translated to Him Who was born of Thee in an inexplicable Manner, O Virgin Theotokos, there were present James, the Brother of our Lord, and first of the Chief Priests, and Peter, the honoured head and leader of Theologians, with the rest of the Divine Rank of Apostles, clearly uttering Divine Words, praising the amazing Divine Mystery - the Mystery of the

TO SIT DOWN, WE ONLY SIT ON THE EDGE OF THE PEW – LEGS UNCROSSED - READY TO STAND UP IMMEDIATELY - NEVERIN A RELAXED OR CASUAL STANCE!

WE MUST NEVER FORGET THAT WE ARE IN THE VERY PRESENCE OF ALMIGHTY GOD – IN HIS HOLY TEMPLE, WHICH IS A MOST SACRED PLACE - WHERE WE DO NOT ACT DISRESPECTFULLY AT ALL. NOR SHOULD WE DRAW ATTENTION TO OURSELVES AND AWAY FROM THE WORSHIP OF GOD BY MEANS OF UNSUITABLE CLOTHING OR BEHAVIOUR!!

3 T H E F EA R O F GO D MEANS THAT DUE TO THE DEPTH OF OUR LOVE , RESPECT AND DEVOTION TO GOD, WE NEVER WANT TO FAIL OR TO DISAPPOINT HIM WHO LOVES US UNCONDITIONALLY! WE SHOULD CONSTANTLY FEAR THE CONSEQUENCES OF OUR OWN WILFUL ACTIONS - OUR FREE CHOICES - THAT WILL CAUSE OUR ALIENATION FROM OUR MOST BELOVED LORD AND SAVIOUR.

Do not incline my heart to evil words; to make excuses for my sins;

With those who work iniquity, let me not unite with their elect.

Jacob went out from the Well of Oath and went towards Haran.

He arrived at a certain place, and stayed there all night, because the sun had set.

Then he took one of the stones of that Place and put it at his head, and he lay down in that Place to sleep.

And he dreamt.

And beheld a Ladder set up on the Earth, and its top reached to Heaven.

And there the Angels of God were ascending and descending on it.

The Lord stood above it and said: “I Am the Lord God of Abraham your Father and the God of Isaac. Do not fear.

The land on which you lie I will give to you and to your seed.

And your seed shall be like the dust of the Earth, and you shall spread abroad to the West and to the East; to the North and to the South.

And in you and in your seed all the tribes of the Earth shall be Blessed.

“And behold: I Am with you and will keep you wherever you go, and will bring you back to this land; for I will not leave you until I have done what I have spoken to you.”

And Jacob awoke from his sleep and said, “The Lord is in this Place – I did not know it!”

And he was afraid, and said: “How awesome is this Place! This is none other than the House of God, and this is the Gate of Heaven!”
