STATEMENT 16 December 2014

Dear brothers and sisters in Christ,

This morning our communities are coming to terms with the deep pain and loss that has come at the end of the ter-

rorising and tragic circumstances that have occurred at Martin Place.

My heartfelt prayers go out to the families of those who have lost their lives; to those injured; to those that have suf-

fered unimaginable anguish; and to those who have worked selflessly to bring about the best outcome in this sad and

violent situation.

I am conscious, too, of the distress this event has created for the people of the city of Sydney, and in the wider Aus-

tralian community. May I assure you that our Catholic community stands with all our neighbours at this time, and

especially applauds the various displays of interfaith solidarity.

In this Advent season, as our communities look with expectation to the coming of the Christ-child, may we hold

close to our hearts those whose lives have been forever changed.

I pray that we remain committed to the cause of justice and peace, to healing and understanding, and that in the

shadow of this tragedy, we may all come to know that God’s love holds us to Him.

Yours sincerely in Christ Jesus,

Most Rev Peter A Comensoli Bishop of Broken Bay For further information please contact: Annie Carrett, Diocesan Communications Manager Catholic Diocese of Broken Bay T: +61 2 9846 0724 M: 0439 600 233 E: [email protected] www.dbb.org.au

AUSTRALIAN CATHOLIC BISHOPS CONFERENCE

Australian Catholic Migrant and Refugee Office Children Bartered in Securing Migration and Maritime Powers Legislation Amendment Bill 2014. The Bill is unethical, according to the Australian Catholic Migrant and Refugee Office. 5 December 2014 Media Release In an all-time low for Australian politics, the Minister for Immigration and Border Protection Scott Morisson, has won

crossbencher’s support in passing a Bill that gives the government unprecedented powers to deal with asylum seekers.

The controversial Migration and Maritime Powers Legislation Amendment (the Asylum Legacy Caseload) Bill 2014

allows Australian officials to redefine who is classified as a refugee. This legislation enables the Government to over-

write the internationally accepted definition by the United Nations Refugee Convention, despite Australia being a sig-

natory to the Convention.

Other measures introduced in this Bill include the reintroduction of temporary protection visas allowing asylum seekers

to work and study. This visa will not provide a pathway to permanency nor allow family reunification meaning asylum

seekers’ lives will remain in a state of insecurity and anxiety. The Bill also allows the government to detain asylum

seekers and fast track refugee status determinations. In practise it means that the government will remain unchecked

and unchallenged in its decision-making.

Director of the Australian Catholic Migrant and Refugee Office Fr Maurizio Pettenà said, “Not only is the content of

this Bill unethical, but equally so is the nature in which it has been conducted by the Immigration Minister. Children

were bartered to secure this deal. When a government lowers its policies to essentially bargaining vulnerable people for

political gain, it raises questions about our morality as a people. Having children detained in the first instance was not

an acceptable option.”

Under the new Bill, Fr Pettena welcomes the proposed release of approximately100 children from Christmas Island

before Christmas and the agreement to raise the humanitarian intake.

“Yet, many questions about the implementation of this Bill remain unanswered,” Fr Maurizio said.

9 December 2014 EMBARGOED UNTIL 6.00 am 10 December

Human Rights Day: Time for Australia to Take Stock On Human Rights Day, the Chairman of the Australian Catholic Social Justice Council has called on Gov-ernment to take stock of its human rights performance. “Recent developments in Indigenous affairs and im-migration policy give cause for anyone concerned about human rights to ask, ‘What’s happening to our na-tion?’” Bishop Christopher Saunders said. “What’s happening in a nation willing to outlay billions of dollars in on- and off-shore immigration detention that undermines human dignity and causes irreparable harm? The cost of running the Manus Island and Nauru facilities alone is over $1 billion annually. “At the same time, Commonwealth and State governments seem unwilling to scrape together a small frac-tion of that amount to provide basic services to remote Indigenous communities. Anywhere up to 150 re-mote towns in Western Australia face closure because the State Government says it can’t find a meagre $90 million to fund municipal and essential services that were recently offloaded to the states by the Com-monwealth Government. Aboriginal communities in South Australia are also at risk,” Bishop Saunders said. “It seems that Australia’s human rights record is being undermined by policies aimed at denying people sanctuary. “People in the cities and regional centres of Australia see it as their right to have basic municipal services. How can we possibly say that Australian citizens in remote communities do not have the same right? “Last week’s changes in Australia’s asylum legislation strike out most references to the Refugee Convention – the international human rights standard for the treatment of asylum seekers, including our basic obligation to ensure no one is deported to danger. “As always, the benchmark of a country’s human rights performance is seen in how it treats the most vul-nerable. Australia is failing the test for First Australians seeking to maintain connection with their traditional, ancestral homelands and for refugees and asylum seekers fleeing violence and persecution in their home-lands,” Bishop Saunders concluded.
