2014 Fall Camporee: ROBIN HOOD

Robin Hood Robin Hood (spelled Robyn Hode in older sources) is a heroic outlaw in English folklore, and, according to legend, was also a highly skilled archerand swordsman. Although such behaviour was not part of his original character, since the beginning of the 19th century[1] he has become known for "robbing from the rich and giving to the poor",[2] assisted by a group of fellow outlaws known as his "Merry Men".[3] Traditionally, Robin Hood and his men are depicted wearing Lincoln green clothes.[4] According to some accounts, the legend has its roots in the activities of actual medieval outlaws, or the ballads or tales that circulated about them.[5]

Robin Hood became a popular folk figure in the medieval period, and continues to be widely represented in modern literature, films and television. In the earliest sources Robin Hood is a yeoman, but later portrayals raise him to the level of an aristocrat wrongfully dispossessed of his lands and made into an outlaw by an unscrupulous sheriff.[6]

Cracker Barrel Scoutmasters/Primary Venture Advisers and SPLs/Crew Leaders will have their regular cracker barrel at The Dining Hall.

Lunch There will be a one hour break for lunch. We Highly encourage Units to plan light meals for breakfasts for both days and also Recommend a backpacking type Lunch. Units can decide for themselves if they want to pack bag lunches to eat after their last morning event or return to their campsite, but afternoon events will start promptly at 1PM! It is Highly Recommended to pack a bag lunch as the campsites are quite a distance from the activities during the day.

Dinner Feast Dinner on Saturday is included at the Fall Camporee this year due to the distances to campsites from where the troops main gear will be. Dinner will be held at the Pavilion near the dining hall and we will have a Pig Roast feast that will include entertainment during Dinner.

During medieval times the spit was the only way to cook meat. In early modern indoor kitchens the spit roast was still a favored way of cooking meat. This in its early days was a labor intensive way to cook meat. Before modern mechanics took hold, a young servant boy would stand at the roast and turn the handle all day to ensure even cooking. This young boy was called a spit jack.

Since ancient times, the meat of the pig had been very popular with everyone except for people of the Jewish and Muslim faith who regard the animal as unclean. In medieval Europe, pigs were everywhere. As omnivores, they could find food in the forest and city streets as well as on the farm.

Where peasants could usually only afford to raise one or two cows, pigs were more numerous. Ham and bacon lasted a long time and went a long way in the humblest peasant household. As common and inexpensive as keeping pigs was, pork was favored by the most elite members of society, as well as by city vendors in pies and other ready-made foods.

Like cows, nearly every part of the pig was used for food, right down to its hooves, which were used to make jellies. Its intestines were popular casings for sausages, and its head was sometimes served on a platter at festive occasions.

Entertainment during dinner will include events that you might see at a Mid Evil Times Dinner & Entertainment. A video clip on what this is like can be found at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=obZ_C5Ew-18

MISSION STATEMENT

THREE RIVERS DISTRICT BOY SCOUT ACTIVITIES

The Three Rivers District, Northern Star Council, BSA is committed to providing meaningful programs that support the mission of The Boy Scouts of America and the Goals of the Outdoor Program. Therefore, Three Rivers District will plan, organize, and conduct programs that strengthen the troop, patrol, and individual Scout through activities which: • Are challenging and fun • Utilize Scout Skills and the patrol method • Promote team building and cooperation • Promote personal leadership and interpersonal communication • Promote self‐reliance and resourcefulness • Facilitate peer interdependence • Develop a respect for natural resources and the environment • Incorporate community service All activities will be evaluated to their effectiveness in promoting and supporting the Three Rivers District Boy Scout activities mission statement. Programs that do not adequately or appropriately support this mission will be modified or changed so that the activity does support the mission statement. If the activity cannot be modified to support the mission, then the activity will not be conducted. Being “fun” is not an adequate enough reason to conduct an activity ‐ it must also support the mission.

MISSION OF SCOUTING The mission of the Boy Scouts of America is to prepare young people to make ethical and moral choices over their lifetimes by instilling in them the values of the Scout Oath and Law.
