Letter from the Executive DirectorI am proud and appreciative of what the community supporting the Boys’ Club has helped us realize this past year. By increasing the breadth and depth of our programming, to recruiting more teens, we have made significant progress and a demonstrable impact.

In 2014, • We offered over 40 engaging programs at each of our three clubhouses.• We served 3,433 boys and young men with an average daily attendance of 616 during the

school year and 772 during the summer. • Sixty percent of our members were active in our Service Learning program, which included

volunteering in soup kitchens, planting vegetable gardens, and preparing meals for the homeless.

• We introduced a new intake and guidance process to ensure our teen members receive individualized attention to help them access relevant services, make informed decisions, and avoid the disengagement that is all too common with this age group.

• We provided 88,680 free, healthy meals to our members.

We also built on our previous accomplishments, enhancing our successful initiatives and making nuanced improvements to our most effective programs.

While this Annual Report captures key moments and triumphs, it is merely an overview of our measurable impact. There is no accounting for the smile on a member’s face during STEM, or the noticeable difference in a teen’s confidence after getting his first job. I hope that this report captures both the measurable and unquantifiable successes we witnessed last year.

Thank you so much for your support; we couldn’t do it without you.

Sincerely,Stephen Tosh

At BCNY, we engage youth with programs that are developmentally responsive and tailored to their changing needs. This breadth of programming allows BCNY to reach a broad pool of youth with diverse interests and needs. BCNY provides a space for boys to experiment and learn through programs that highlight a variety of learning styles, including auditory, visual, and kinesthetic, and lead to more holistic outcomes. Adopting best practices in youth development learning and research, our approach focuses on project-based and hands-on learning activities that maximize opportunities for critical thinking, problem-solving, and teamwork.

Our Programs

STAND TALL: Character Development & Life Skills These programs instill strong character attributes, teach positive decision-making, encourage leadership, and support the transition of our members into adulthood. Along with mentoring and community service opportunities, we offer youth council, career readiness, and financial literacy.

HIT A HOME RUN: Sports & Recreation Members learn the fundamentals of games and sports, and progress to playing competitively and coaching younger members. We teach boys to be safe in and around the water through our Red Cross certified swimming and lifeguarding programs, and our championship swim teams.

EXERCISE YOUR MIND: Academic Support We help boys reach their full academic potential through homework help, tutoring, early literacy support, STEM, and fun academic competitions. Members are also assisted in their pursuit of secondary and post-secondary education through SSAT and SAT prep, admissions counseling, financial aid workshops, and our independent school placement services.

EXPRESS YOURSELF: Visual & Performing Arts We offer music instruction in 12 instruments and chorus, as well as drama and dance programs. Our visual arts programs include painting, sculpture, photography, filmmaking, animation, and graphic design.

FEEL GREAT: Mental and Physical Health These programs concentrate on the overall wellness of members in the areas of nutrition, safety, physical fitness, and self-discipline. Members can study martial arts and yoga, learn to cook, and also have access to our full-time mental health team that provides counseling and clinical evaluation services to members with special needs and challenging life circumstances.

Turning the Page

Adam joined BCNY when he was 6 years old. His mother was speaking with Abbe Education Director Stephanie Hakes about Adam’s older brother, also a member, and mentioned that Adam was struggling with reading. Stephanie immediately suggested he join READ, the early literacy program BCNY developed to address the same challenges Adam was facing.

As expected, Adam didn’t like reading. “It was boring,” he says, because he often had to reread sentences and pages many times before he understood them. But READ was different The curriculum includes a variety of fiction and non-fiction books that hold a special interest for boys, such as Adam’s new favorite book “Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day.”

For Adam’s parents, it’s not just about being able to read. “I want him to feel comfortable and self-confident,” says his mother. After three years in the program, Adam’s reading has significantly improved. His grades are better, his homework is easier, and his attitude is totally different. Even Adam admits that he is starting to like reading. “He said ‘Now I’m enjoying it!’ Those are his words!” exclaims his mother happily. Maybe Adam will soon be teaching his younger brother Ian to read.

• Members who participated in READ, BCNY’s early literacy program, showed an average growth of two-thirds of a grade level in reading.

• Most of the 116 participants joined READ reading below grade level. After less than 6 months in the program, almost half of them were reading at or above their grade level.

Strike a Chord

Adam, 11, and Ronny, 12, both started taking guitar lessons this year. Adam chose the guitar in anticipation of his next camping trip: “I could play a song at the campfire,” he imagines. Plus, as he says, “I thought it was cool!”

Ronny and Adam take a group lesson together once a week and practice on their own at home. Ronny loves his group lesson; “You can help others if they don’t know how to do it. When you don’t know how to do it, they can help you.”

Like many New York City students, neither Ronny nor Adam have music classes at their school, despite the overwhelming evidence that music education contributes measurably to student motivation and performance, and improves overall brain development . As Adam puts it, after a guitar lesson he actually feels “one step closer” to achieving his goals, and he and Ronny look forward to the next chord, the next song, and the next challenge.

• BCNY’s music program served 608 individual students last year. Of these, 175 studied more than one instrument.

• BCNY provided 12,721 individual and group music lessons in 10 different instruments, plus chorus.

• 73% of music program students showed growth in music skills, which include sight-reading, timing, and music theory.

Working Hard

19-year old member Roland comes to the Harriman Clubhouse almost every day, but not just for his favorite Teen Center programs. Roland also comes because, as a newly hired staff member, his colleagues expect him.

In his first year at BCNY, Roland signed up for Project Coach, BCNY’s paid internship program that teaches teen members to coach BCNY’s youngest members as they compete in intramural sports. It wasn’t always easy, but Roland found he loved working with the Explorers. Encouraged by his success, Roland next applied for the Work Progress Program, BCNY’s 10-week internship program. He interviewed successfully and earned a position with Good Old Lower East Side (GOLES), a neighborhood housing and preservation organization, where he excelled.

After his internship ended, Roland applied for a position with Summer Superheroes, BCNY’s summer literacy program. In Summer Superheroes, teen members are trained as reading mentors and work daily with one or two Explorers, tutoring them on reading, writing, and phonics. “Teaching [the Explorers] was hard, but seeing the smiles on their faces, knowing they’re enjoying it, put a smile on my face.” With his experience and great attitude, Roland was also asked to manage the other teen tutors.

At the end of the summer, one of Harriman’s directors asked Roland to consider working part time in the Explorer Department. She’d seen him in Project Coach and Summer Superheroes and was impressed by his skills and maturity. Roland got the job, and has been working as a part-time Program Aide for 6 months. What he loves most? “Seeing my friends, seeing colleagues working here, seeing the kids smile, and having fun—everyone having fun.”

Roland recently applied for a job with a retail store (he’s saving money for college, which he begins next year). The hiring manager was very impressed—with four different positions already on his resume, Roland knows he’s more marketable, which is especially important considering how many other teens he’s competing against. He’ll definitely miss the Boys’ Club, but he knows he’ll always have a place—and probably a job—here.

Page 11: 2014 BCNY Annual Report

• 105 teens became BCNY coaches, mentors, counselors-in-training, and interns through BCNY’s work readiness training programs

• 57% of members in BCNY’s Work Progress Program transitioned into education or were offered a paying job after the program.

Diving In

Erik joined the Boys’ Club as a 6-year old, and jumped right into the pool. He’d been watching his big brother swim for years, practicing the strokes from the stands during lessons and meets. His step-father was the swim instructor at the time, and Erik wasted no time learning to swim once he had the chance to get in the pool. A fast learner, Erik was invited to join BCNY’s swim team only a year later. By the time he was 8, he was ranked third in the nation in his age bracket. “It was like lightning hit water,” he says of those early races.

As a fifteen year old, Erik was finally old enough to become a lifeguard. He earned his certification at BCNY, and then become a part-time lifeguard at his own clubhouse. Although he attended the prestigious Loomis Chaffee boarding school through BCNY’s Independent School Placement program, he remained active in BCNY aquatics, and continued to excel in national competitions.

After high school, Erik attended the University of Delaware to pursue a degree in sports management, but couldn’t stay away for long. After graduation, Erik returned once again to BCNY; “I felt like I needed to come back to the Boys’ Club. I wanted to work with the kids that needed me the most,” and give back to the organization that helped him grow up.

Nine years later, Erik is the Aquatics Director at Harriman Clubhouse. He teaches boys to swim and helps them become lifeguards, and coaches the swim team. But he also talks to the boys and, more importantly, he listens. As Erik puts it, “There is a balance between teaching a boy how to swim and relating to him fully.” He knows where they come from, the challenges they face, and the mettle they have within themselves.

Recently, one of his swimmers asked him why he became the Aquatics Director for BCNY. Erik told him, “I didn’t want to want to become a lawyer or a doctor. I didn’t feel that was my strength. I felt my strength was working with young men.” This year’s new swimmers and swim team champions would surely agree.

Looking Ahead

We are pleased with our progress over the last year but always look to further improve our programs and deepen our impact. Our focus next year will be on carefully assessing the quality and impact of our current programs, rather than introducing new ones, to ensure we are effectively meeting our members’ needs.

In particular, we are committed to further developing and refining our services for older teens in the next year, to better ensure they graduate high school with the skills and social-emotional competencies that will enable them to move into college, vocational training, or pursue other positive post-secondary opportunities.

We will also be increasing our emphasis on community engagement and parent involvement, and continuing our work to enhance our members’ service learning opportunities.

Finally, we will further develop our STEM programming and work to expand our drama and dance programming to bring them to the same level of breadth and quality as our music and art programs.

As we move forward with a robust portfolio of strong programs for all age groups, we are excited to see what our boys, our staff, and our community can achieve. And we can’t wait to tell you, our greatest supporters, all about it.
