Your Bathroom Welcome to the bathroom! Now I bet you are thinking how can the bathroom be sustainable? And what can I do to make it greener? Here are some helpful hints, tips and advice. Have a look around and think about where you might be able to make some changes – no matter how big or small.

Lighten up! Automatic lighting never leaves you in the dark. The lights and the extraction fan come on automatically. This prevents them not being switched off accidentally.

ShowersAll bathrooms in The Green are fitted with a shower rather than a bath. Having a shower can save 35 litres of water. The low flow showerheads also save water and energy.

Dual Flush The dual flush toilets promote water efficiency. They contribute to a decrease in water usage which promotes a more sustainable environment. Using water more efficiently helps maintain reservoirs and groundwater levels.

Turn it offNever leave the tap running when brushing your teeth – saving water saves energy.

Solar WaterThe Solar Thermal panels on the roof help produce 90% of the heat required for your hot water.

Watch what you flushFlushing the wrong things down your toilet wastes a huge amount of water. Not only does every flush use 8 litres of water, but you might also block the toilet and cause a flood.

Rainwater harvesting Rainwater is collected from the roofs of the buildings in The Green and reused to flush toilets.

fact fact

fact

Spending 10mins less inthe shower saves enough

energy to cook 9.5 microwave dinners

There are organic toothpaste brands available.

Toothpaste is made using lots of chemical and so

why not choose a natural alternative available from

health food stores?

If everybody turned the tap off for a single minute

when brushing their teeth, we’d save enough water to supply 2 million

people for a day

Biodiversity Campus Tour Guide1. Student Central OrchardWe’ve got various types of heritage apples, pears and greengage keeping old species alive. Rows of lavender have been planted together with crabapple trees which attract bees. An old stone horse trough has been repositioned and planted with herbs for staff and students to pick.

2. Longside Lane Edible PlantingThe site has been planted with lots of edible species such as gooseberries and blackcurrants which are quickly picked by staff and students during fruiting season! These are grown alongside lavender, sage and rosemary as well as apple and damson trees and other various wildlife-attracting shrubs and wildflower borders.

3. Bug HotelThis small quiet area was created to entice wildlife onto campus by providing feeding stations, nesting boxes and hibernation boxes for insects, bugs and hedgehogs.

4.AmphitheatreThe centre of the campus was created to form a perfect amphitheatre to be used for leisure studies and many other student activities.

5. Student Central Car ParkThis area was created in 2013 as a fruit border which includes various varieties of blueberry, redcurrant and blackcurrant, gooseberry and strawberry.

6. Wild Flower MeadowDeveloped in 2014 to celebrate 50 years of the Royal Horticultural Society, planted with various fruit trees and under-planted with wildflowers to create a golden meadow.

7. The STEM BuildingThe planting around the newly completed Bright Building and STEM building include a variety of habitats for wildlife. Flowering ornamental shrubs including Lavender, Hebe, Sedum and Buddleia provide a source of pollen for bees and butterflies. Berrying ornamental plants such as Viburnum, Skimmia, Mahonia and Cotoneaster provide fruit and berries for birds. Evergreen shrubs such as Juniper, Bamboos, Hebes, and Escallonia will eventually provide some dense winter ground-foraging cover for birds.

8.The Green Student VillageThis area is the University’s Sustainable Student Village. The site has been designed and landscaped with nature in mind, consisting of grassed areas, a wildflower border, shrubberies and native trees. There is an urban pond which attracted our first family of wild ducks in the first year of opening in 2012. There are bird nesting sites and 6 bat boxes built into the sides of the blocks.

9. The Sedum Roof, Norcroft CentreThe Sedum roof covers an area of 100m2 and provides the building with a natural thermal insulation and noise reduction as well as providing habitat for animals, birds and insects.

10. Bright Building biodiversity roof gardenThe Biodiversity Roof Garden to the new Bright Building provides both an educational resource to the new sustainable enterprise centre, and a new species- rich habitat for wildlife. Planting to the western end includes a native Butterflies and Bees Wildflower Meadow area supplemented with an Annual Cornfield Mix to provide an additional burst of colour during its first year. A small pond planted with native marginals and aquatics such as Marsh Marigold, Water Mint, Flag Irises, Rush and Sedge, provides an additional habitat and source of drinking water for wildlife.

10a. Bright Building sunspaceThe planting species within the Sunspace has all been specially selected for the environment which they will be growing in. By adopting a "Right Plant Right Place" principle, the plants will not only thrive and grow but they will actively improve the air quality and hydration levels within the whole building. This process is essential to help maintain a healthy learning environment as it has been proven that indoor air quality can be up to 10 times more polluted than outdoor air.

11. Horton D Raised BedsIn this area, newly constructed wooden troughs are planted with various insect-attracting plants and spring bulbs using compost produced on campus from food waste.

12. AtriumThe newly landscaped seating space outside the Atrium completed in January 2014 includes 'Living Green retaining walls' planted with wildlife-attracting flowering and berrying climbers including Honeysuckles, Rose, Jasmine, Clematis, Pyracantha, Chaenomles and Ceanothus trained onto wires. Edible climbers comprise Vine varieties, and Morella Cherry 'Fans' (the choice being restricted by the north and east aspects).

13. Faculty of Health StudiesThis is a quiet area for people to sit and rest; planted with local wildlife in mind, a small pond and a native hedge. A medicinal herb garden has been planted to coincide with the opening of the Faculty of Health Studies in the summer of 2011. Various herbs have been planted here which hold healing qualities such as fennel, lavender, parsley, peppermint, sage, rosemary, chives and thyme.

14.Peace GardenThis is a quiet area on campus designed for people to sit and rest, planted with local wildlife in mind and containing a small water feature.

15 .Shearbridge Hedge400 trees were provided by the Woodland Trust in 2012 and these are all wild harvest trees that will grow into a site boundary and provide food for local wildlife. They are Hazel, Blackthorn, Crab Apple, Cherry Plum, Elder and Dog Rose.

16. BeesThis patch is also home to our apiary which houses four beehives and produces local University honey. A part of this surrounding area has been given to the Peace Studies department who have designed and planted species which will supply food sources for the bees nearby.

17. Shearbridge OrchardPlanted by a local school as part of the University’s commitment to local engagement. We’ve got various types of heritage apples, pears and greengage, keeping old species alive.

18. Pemberton walkDuring the summer months this area is a showcase of summer bedding plants and colourful flower basket displays and window boxes. There is also an area for rose bushes, selected for their beauty and highly fragrant scents.

19. Bulb and memorial gardenAn area dedicated to the planting of memorial trees and planted in memory of past students and staff with a vast amount of spring bulbs.

20. Pemberton Nature Area

This is the University’s oasis, a small section of woodland left to nature with very little interference from our grounds staff. We have added bird boxes and an insect hotel made from recycled materials. The grassed area is dedicated to spring bulb plants and is increased every year by first-year student volunteers planting daffodils, tulips, snowdrops and bluebells.

21. RocketThe Rocket composter composts all University food waste, producing 2 tonnes of top-quality compost per month. It takes two weeks to pass through the composter and is matured in the bays opposite, before using on the campus grounds.

My name is Sue Baker, and I am the International Student Adviser at the University of Bradford. Welcome! I hope that I will have the opportunity to meet you soon!

International and EU Students

Don’t worry if you find everything very strange at first – this is completely normal and it does take some time to settle down and feel at home. We are here to help you.

We will have an ‘International Student Information Point’ running from the 9th September to the 23rd September in room C101 in Richmond Building. If you are arriving during that period, please come along and say hello! We will be open from 8.30am to 6.00pm on each of these days, including the weekends, and will be very happy to meet you and help you with all those many questions that most students have when they first arrive. We will also be running daily campus and city tours, including shopping tours, and our team of friendly student ambassadors will be able to give you lots of tips, based on their own experiences of being a student in Bradford.

After the International Student Information Point has closed, you can find me at The Hub. It is my job to help international and EU students with any non-academic problems that may arise during your time here. No problem is too small or too large – we have an English saying that ‘A problem shared, is a problem halved’ - so please don’t sit in your room worrying about something on your own. Come along to The Hub or email me to make an appointment and I will do my best to help you. My contact details are below.

See you soon!

Unipol Student HomesCompared to most university towns and cities in the UK, privately rented accommodation in Bradford is inexpensive and there are plenty of houses for friends to rent together close to campus. The average rent for a room is around £55 per week with additional utility charges (prices correct as of January 2014).

The University works closely with Unipol to provide students with a private accommodation service that is transparent and easy to use. Unipol is a unique organisation – a charity which was established in 1975. It was developed to help students find the best housing they can, drive up standards and be a beacon of good practice for other housing suppliers.

If you would prefer to live in privately rented accommodation in your 2nd year you should visit/contact the Unipol accommodation bureau located in The Hub as your first point of call or contact them via their website: www.unipol.org.uk/bradford

The service is free and there is an excellent choice of accommodation from shared houses, flats, bedsits, studios to rooms in larger developments. These are all displayed on the website which is easy to navigate.

The agency has helped more than 18,000 students a year find accommodation in Leeds and Bradford. Also, it has played an important role in increasing standards with its own code of practice called the Unipol code. Properties that meet this code are clearly marked to make it easier for you to choose an accredited property.

Unipol can also help students with house hunting-related problems through their drop-in solicitor service.

Contact Unipol for more information on 01274 235899.

Student Health ServiceWe strongly recommend you register with a local GP or the Student Health Service when you arrive in Bradford as soon as possible. The Student Health Service is located on Laisteridge Lane. To register, simply pop in and fill out a registration form. Where you require urgent help, call emergency services on 999.

The Eye Clinic The University has its own Eye Clinic located in the Listerhills Science Park. The Eye Clinic offers a complete primary eye care service to the general public as well as to students and staff of the University and their families. They work closely with other healthcare professionals in the region, and welcome the referral of patients into any of our clinics for further diagnostic tests. Illegal Drugs & AlcoholAlcohol needn’t be a problem if you stick within your limits. Moderation is the key to staying in control of your actions and staying safe. The recommended weekly alcohol units for a woman are 14, and for men are 21. 1 unit is equivalent to half a pint of ordinary strength beer or lager (3.5% ABV), one small glass of wine (125 ml) or one single measure of spirit (25ml).

If you or someone you care about is experiencing problems with alcohol abuse, you can contact the Piccadilly Project in Bradford on 01274 735775, or contact Alcoholics Anonymous at www.alcoholics-anonymous.org.uk

Illegal substances are strictly prohibited on University property. It is a criminal offence to possess or supply drugs which are controlled under the abuse of the Drugs Act without

legal authority - which usually means a prescription. If you are caught on campus with illegal substances on your person, you could be fined, removed from halls and/or removed from your course. Any conviction could have serious ramifications if you are on a course leading to a professional qualification. If you or someone you know is having problems with any of these issues, you can refer to the Local Substance Misuse Directory at: www.substancemisuse.bradford.nhs.uk. For national advice, head to www.talktofrank.com.

Food & Fitness It is important to look after yourself when you are at University and to maintain a balanced lifestyle. Eating healthily and exercising doesn’t have to be boring or costly. Buying and preparing fresh fruit and vegetables can often be cheaper than buying take-out meals and ready-made dinners. There are plenty of great recipe websites and books available for culinary ideas which are quick and easy to make. Remember to keep your body hydrated by drinking lots of water. You should aim to drink around 6-8 medium glasses of fluids a day, such as tea, coffee or juice.

Food waste can be a big problem for some people but can be easily avoided by planning meals in advance and keeping an eye on “use by” dates.
