Daisies Set Example for Others

There is no greater feeling than to make

an impact in your community!

On Nov. 30, 2011, with the holiday season in full swing, the Humanitarian Service Project was extremely busy supplying gifts for 1,200 needy children and 120 seniors. They were also busy managing ways to provide food to the 250 families enrolled in their Children’s Birthday Project and the monthly delivery of 90 pounds of groceries to seniors served by their organization.

On that day, the Carol Stream, IL, organization got a little extra help from Girl Scout Daisy Troop 42187. To help HSP continue its mission of alleviating pain and suffering caused by poverty among needy seniors and children in DuPage and Kane Counties, the troop of girls from Glen Ellyn, IL, conducted a food drive.

“We chose our food drive with HSP based on my experiences volunteering with them,” said troop leader Amy Gelber. “The girls really seemed to enjoy themselves and went way above and beyond any expectations.”

As a troop, the girls were able to donate three full palettes of food to HSP’s mission. The group of Daisies expressed how happy they were to participate in a food drive that helped so many people in need.

“I think [service] is a great thing to do and shows other people how you can make a difference,” said Claire Gelber, 6. “You really can, and it makes you feel all warm and fuzzy inside!”

The group of 5- and 6-year-olds finished their project with a tour of the HSP facility in Carol Stream during which they saw exactly what kind of impact their efforts could make. At such a young age, these Daisies were ready to set an example for others.

“Other people can learn that it’s important to be nice and help other people even if you don’t know them,” said Elsa Olson, 6.
