More than 300 jobs lost in EPSB budget

Edmonton Public School Board trustees have approved a $934-million budget that will see dozens of teachers, edu-cation assistants, custodians, maintenance and support staff lose their jobs.

The 2013-14 budget, which was unanimously passed by trustees late Tuesday afternoon at a board meeting, chops 339 full-time jobs.

The axed jobs consist of 182 teaching positions and 157 non-teaching positions.

NDP education critic Deron Bilous, a former teacher and the MLA for Edmonton-Bev-erly Clareview, said the staff cuts mean classroom sizes will

go up. The impact of this is sig-

nificant, not just in the interim and the near future, but for the long term, he said. Classroom sizes, classroom numbers are going to go up This is going to negatively affect students, families everywhere.

Before the budget was passed at Tuesdays meeting, EPSB superintendent Edgar Schmidt called it challenging.

    There are many aspects of

this years budget process that have not been pleasing, to say the least, he said.

Prior to voting to approve the budget, several trustees called the layoffs sad.

I have to say that I really ache for all the staff who are fa-cing layoffs or an unwanted or unexpected change in the work that they currently love, said trustee Catherine Ripley.

EPSB chair Sarah Hoffman, meanwhile, repeated a state-ment she has said since the provincial government an-nounced funding reductions in March.

We will have to do less with less.

The layoffs come as the board is expecting a 1,200 stu-dent rise in enrollment.

Following the approval of the budget, Hoffman said while the majority of cuts have been focused outside of school oper-ations, the staff reductions are not good news.

That is going to be challen-ging for all of us, but well do our best to pick up the pieces and protect kids and move for-ward as best we can, she said.

Before the budget was ap-proved, trustees debated a mo-tion to retain two full-time pos-itions to support student health and wellness. The recommen-dation was ultimately defeated.

Coun. Don Iveson is all smiles Tuesday at the Edmonton Petroleum Club as he announces his intentions to run for mayor in the fall municipal election. RYAN TUMILTY/METRO

Third councillor throws hat in ring

Coun. Don Iveson became the third sitting city councillor to join the race for mayor on Tuesday.

At a press conference at the Edmonton Petroleum Club,

Iveson announced he wants to continue building the City of Edmonton.

My passion is city building, and my city is Edmonton, he said.

The two-term councillor for Ward 10 had been widely ex-pected to announce a mayoral bid after he said he would not seek his council seat for an-other term.

Iveson said Edmonton has grown tremendously from a city shedding youth to a city at-tracting them, and he wants to make sure that continues.

We have helped turn Ed-monton into Canadas best city for artists and entrepreneurs, he said. Now it is time for

Edmonton to take its next big step.

Iveson also stressed he would focus on the everyday issues, as well as work to find permanent solutions to long-term problems.

No one on city council or anywhere else in Edmonton likes potholes. We all want snow cleared quickly, he said.

Coun. Kim Krushell said Iveson will bring excitement to the mayors race.

Hes an energetic guy, and he is very excited about step-ping up into the mayors pos-ition, she said.

Coun. Ben Henderson said Iveson looks at the big picture and represents the citys youth.

He has a very broad per-spective of the city, he said. I think he represents the next generation of energy.

Race heating up. In an expected move, Don Iveson, who has served Ward 10 for two terms, announces he is running for mayor

    Competition

Mayor Stephen Mandel announced last month that he would not run for a fourth term.

Iveson joins Coun. Kerry Diotte, Coun. Karen Leibovici and community league president Curtis Penner, who have also declared their intentions to run.

Cuts. Tech schools barely touchedTech-savvy and trades-focused Alberta schools appear to have been spared from the sharpest cuts to provincial post-secondary, according to overall budget breakdowns provided by the government to Metro for the first time.

The provided data includes previously reported uniform 7.3 per cent reductions to Campus Alberta grants, but also includes funding altera-tions for infrastructure and apprenticeship technical training grants.

Those latter grants have helped soften the blow at institutions such as Calgarys SAIT and Edmontons NAIT, which will see their overall funding reduced by 5.6 per cent year over year.

But other major schools such as MacEwan and Mount Royal universities will each see their provincial offerings trimmed by nine per cent, while the University of Al-berta will see 7.8 per cent less funding, and the University of Calgary will make do with 8.3 per cent less.

The discrepancy in funding caught many post-secondary advocates off-guard Tuesday, but Doug Spurgeon, president of the SAIT faculty association, said it sends a clear message the province is putting its priority on trade careers.

To me, the writing was on the wall that we were going to come out of it barely touched, he said. Its what the provincial and federal governments have been say-ing they want the people trained to do jobs ... they want the apprentices trained. A homeless man already facing charges in the death of one man is now facing charges in the death of another, in what police allege were two murders in two days.

Melvin Simon John Mitch-ell, 23, has been charged with second-degree murder, along with other charges, in the death of 68-year-old Jose Guillermo Rodriguez.

Rodriguez was found stabbed to death in his apart-ment at 83 Street and Jasper Av-enue on June 3, after last being seen on May 29.

who was found dead in a park west of downtown May 30.

Staff Sgt. Bill Clark, with the EPS homicide section, said for-

ensic evidence at both scenes pointed to Mitchell, but there are no other links between the two cases.

Mitchell, who is from the Northwest Territories, has been in Edmonton for 10 to 12 months with no fixed address, Clark said, adding he is known to police in both areas.

Clark said Mitchell became associates with both victims by striking up conversations with them, and got along for a little while before something went wrong. HeatHer McIntyre/Metro

First phase of Smart Bus technology set to be rolled out

Riders on two Edmonton Tran-sit bus routes will soon be able to tell in real time where their bus is and how long before it arrives.

Beginning in early to mid-July, Edmonton Transit will have Smart Bus technology available on routes 111 and 128.

The system will let riders know where their bus is while at the same time giving drivers

    better communication with transit headquarters.

GPS, automated stop an-nouncements and a computer-aided dispatch system are all part of the first phase of ETSs Smart Bus project, which aims to deliver a more reliable tran-sit service.

This will give us a set of tools to be able to provide in-formation to transit riders in real time, Lorna Stewart, ETSs

director of technology and in-formation management, said on Tuesday. Its really taking the guesswork out of knowing if that bus is coming on time.

The upgrades will help tran-sit headquarters quickly man-age incidents by knowing the precise area of downed buses.

The stop announcements and signs will also work to help provide visually and hearing-impaired riders with a more comfortable trip.

Edmonton Transit said Lets be ahead of the curve on this, and Lets get this stuff moving now, said ETS Supt. Malcolm Hodgson.

Next up will be real-time bus maps on Edmonton Tran-sits website and mobile app by September.

Schools. Community groups given more time to adjust to rent hikeThe superintendent of Edmon-ton Public Schools has decided to give community organ-izations renting school spaces longer to adjust to increased lease rates.

The lease-rate increase will be phased in over a six-year period rather than four years, the board said Tuesday.

EPSB Supt. Edgar Schmidt also said the increases have been limited to $1 per square metre, per month, for 2013-14.

In a letter dated June 18 and sent to leaseholders, Schmidt said the board cannot in good conscience continue to use in-structional funds intended for the classroom to subsidize our lease rates.

In May, the school board said it would be raising the rates for the spaces in its buildings that are rented to community groups, including preschools and daycares. Metro

United Way takes aim at poverty in edmonton area

The United Way wants to end poverty.

The charity unveiled a new focus on Tuesday, aiming to use its fundraising clout to elimin-ate the societal scourge.

Its a daily call to action fo-cusing on strength we can use

to make the greatest impact, chairperson Lynne Duncan said. We envision a poverty-free community where all chil-dren and youth achieve their full potential.

To realize this ambitious goal, the organization is hoping to work with agencies focused on helping children get an edu-cation, keeping people healthy and raising incomes.

Charity president Anne Smith said the United Way wants to concentrate on specif-ic, measurable outcomes, not just money raised.

We must be known more for what we accomplish than for how many dollars we raise, she said. We must also recog-nize that the annual campaign is a means to an end. It is not an end in and of itself.

Coun. Ben Henderson ap-plauded the move, and said eliminating poverty is an in-vestment in people.

Hopefully, a generation from now we are not really talking about poverty in this city.

Talks on syria went better than expected: harper

The Group of Eight stopped short of calling for the ouster of Syrian President Bashar Assad in its final statement on Tuesday but did call for a swift end to the bloody civil war and urgent peace talks.

Despite a lack of consensus among the G8, Prime Minis-ter Stephen Harper said the outcome was better than ex-

    pected.Tensions have escalated

over the past week since the U.S. announced it would sup-ply weapons to the Syrian op-position after it found proof the Assad regime attacked its foes with chemical weapons.

Russia the only member of the G8 that supports the Assad government has been highly critical of the move. The Russians also assert that the claims about chemical weapons are based on flimsy evidence.

The rest of the G8 is split over whether the U.S. should arm the rebels, but generally agrees that Assad must go.

The final G8 statement on Syria sought the middle ground. It condemned any use of chemical weapons without admitting any attacks actually happened.

It also called for some sort of transitional government, without explicitly calling for Assads ouster. The Canadian Press

    Another Montreal mayor bids adieu

Montreal has had its second scandal-provoked mayoral re-signation in less than a year, with an arrest and criminal

charges leading to the depar-ture on Tuesday of its interim city-hall boss.

Replacement mayor Mi-chael Applebaum stepped down a day after he was slapped with 14 criminal char-ges.

He made the announce-ment in a two-minute state-ment at city hall. He did not take questions. Applebaum

said hes innocent of the char-ges against him and will work to prove his innocence.

I will do everything I can to prove the accusations against me are unfounded, Applebaum said.

He said he hoped some-day to regain Montrealers trust. He conceded that, in the meantime, it would have been implausible to try to continue

    as mayor.Applebaum spent much of

his statement combating the notion that he had deceived Montrealers. Seven months after he took office on a prom-ise to fight corruption, Apple-baum insisted he had never participated in illegal schemes and said he had achieved suc-cesses in cleaning up city hall.

    The charges against him

stemmed from alleged acts that occurred from 2006 to 2011, before he became may-or. While police offered few details, they said the charges related to real-estate projects in the west-end borough Applebaum led.

Italys high court on Tuesday harshly faulted the appeals court that acquitted Amer-ican student Amanda Knox of murdering her roommate, saying its ruling was full of deficiencies, contradictions and illogical conclusions. It ordered a new appeals court to consider all the evidence to determine whether Knox helped kill the young woman.

In March, the Court of Cassation overturned Knoxs acquittal in the 2007 murder of British roommate Mere-dith Kercher, 21, and ordered a new trial. On Tuesday, the high court issued its written reasoning for doing so.

The 74-page document picked apart the 2011 appeals-court decision that freed Knox, faulting the judges for ignoring some evidence, con-sidering other evidence in-sufficiently and undervaluing the fact that Knox had initially accused a man of committing the crime who had nothing to do with it.

    Among the undervalued

EU slams Canada for holding up trade talks

Canada has publicly been called on the carpet by the European Union for holding up free-trade talks. EU trade spokesman John Clancy took the unusual step

Tuesday of criticizing Canada as the G8 summit in Northern Ireland came to a close.

We are very close to an agreement, Clancy said in a statement. The EU has shown pragmatism and flexibility and is ready to take the last steps to achieve a political break-through in the negotiations.

We have been awaiting a similar message from Canada since the trade and agriculture

ministers met in Ottawa in ear-ly February.

Cranking up the pressure on Canadian negotiators is Mondays announcement that the European Union and the United States are starting their own free-trade talks.

Some have suggested the European negotiators will now turn their attention to the Americans and give short shrift to Canada.

Prime Minister Stephen Harper, speaking to Canadian journalists at the lakeside Lough Erne resort, said there are posi-tives and negatives to negotiat-ing with the Europeans at the same time as the Americas.

In terms of our own nego-tiations, I think you could say maybe there are some advan-tages, maybe there are some disadvantages, Harper said.ThE Canadian PrEss

The Seattle-based coffee chain says it will start posting calorie counts on menu boards across the U.S. next week, ahead of a federal regulation that would require it to do so.

Calorie counts on menus are already required in some parts of the country, includ-ing New York City.

But starting June 25, Starbucks Corp. says customers at its more than 11,000 U.S. locations will be able to see that there are 300 cal-ories in a small caramel Frappuccino and 230 cal-ories in a small Iced Caffe Mocha. Pastry cases will also

Federal Natural Resources Minister Joe Oliver, speaking at a news conference Tuesday in Halifax, said Ottawa will introduce legislation this fall to raise the liability cap for companies operating in At-lantic Canadas offshore to $1 billion, up from the current $30 million. The liability cap

OK, I have a cat here. And Im going to place it gently among the pigeons, then back away:

Should tipping be banned?A popular high-end New York restau-

rant called Sushi Yasuda thinks so, and has done exactly that. Servers are forced to live on their salaries. They also get, like, benefits.

The restaurants owner says the tipping ban ends the bile-inducing requirement to calculate the tip at the end of the meal, re-capturing the serenity of fine Japanese dining.

Just so, grasshopper. This isnt a trend exactly, but theres al-

so a bit of an outbreak in Chicago where in some restau-rants, you pay for the meal before you even begin. Careful not to choke on the appetizer.

Right now, there are overworked and underpaid servers everywhere going WTF? This subject is not even open to negotiation.

Then, just as likely, there are customers who are wondering when the practice of tip-ping became an obligation under the Geneva Convention, or wherever they issue those must-be-obeyed decrees.

Theres even less room to weasel out of tipping these days. Now, the server hovers (anxious, vigilant) over your shoulder as you pay the bill on that portable Wi-Fi Visa ma-chine with its handy tip percentage buttons. I dont know about you, but unless the waiter f lambs my dinner companion, I dutifully press the 20 per cent button.

And if he/she does toast my guest, I only leave 15 per cent. You have to take a stand somewhere.

Back in the old days, if you were abandoned altogether

somewhere between courses, you could slide a penny under your dish and make your getaway, smug in the knowledge that you failed to put some kid through drama school. But theres no penny button on that infernal ma-chine.

At the New York sushi restaurant, people were so brain-washed that they tried to write in a tip on the bill, even though there was no place to accommodate one. They just didnt get it, until the owners started red-circling the ex-planation about the tipping ban. Then they got it, and un-less they were married to the server, they liked it.

I dont know about a ban, but it might not be a bad idea to restore the idea of the tip as an expression of apprecia-tion for good service. Dont ban tipping; ban the obligation to tip.

Of course, now Ive done it. Ill have to eat at home until the heat dies down. Maybe, just to be safe, Ill hire a food taster. Problem is, Ill have to leave a generous tip. Nobody wants an unhappy food taster.

HERES A TIP: DONT EXPECT ONE?

    JUST SAYIN'

Pups close call with killer whaleThis fortunate sea lion escaped the jaws of death by a few centimetres after a pod of killer whales (orca) risked beaching themselves while in pursuit of their prey.

The South American sea lion pup and others encountered the predatory mammals as they cruised along the coast of Valdes Peninsula in Argentina. METRO

Hi sea lion, nice to meat you

    PABLO CERSOSIMO/SOLENT

    Q and A

    Near-deathlife lesson

It looks like this sea lion is doomed... This seal survived but others were not so fortunate. But in truth, pups need a couple of

these bad experiences to learn that orcas are predators and that they will be part of their menu. When pups are one month old, they start venturing out into the water and at that stage they dont know what an orca is. They dont associate these whales with danger and often stay in the water when the predators show up. Its a life lesson for the pup.

In these hunter-versus-the-hunted scenarios, do you sympathize with one critter over another? No, I sympathize with both. The orca is one of my favourite animals its smart, intelligent and with many respects similar to humans. And I admire the sea lions for their ability to survive against this magnifi cent predator.

Zombies are the most recent and most unlikely pop cul-ture heroes.

On TV, the recent Walking Dead finale drew almost 13 million viewers.

At the movies the zom com Warm Bodies made still hearts beat again and outdoor recreation retailer REI even bandwagon jumped with their 13 Essential Tools for Surviving a Zombie Outbreak campaign.

This weekend Brad Pitt battles the undead in World War Z, an action thriller set against the backdrop of a worldwide zombie apoca-lypse.

The movie has the highest ratio of zombies to humans of any film this year, but dont ask its star why these cannibalistic cadavers are so trendy.

As for why zombies are so popular, said Pitt, I really have no idea.

Pitt may not be able to out his finger on it, but academ-ics suggest a variety of rea-

    sons. Audiences are interested

in zombies in times of crisis, when we feel disempowered, says one, while another writ-er proposes that they offer something more primal that the zombies represent an example of control over death.

Whatever the reason, film-makers have been capitaliz-ing on these cool corpses for years. Some, like Night of the Living Dead and Shaun of the Dead are classics, others, like

    the stranger-than-usual Zom-bie Honeymoon, arent.

The grand-ghoul of all weird zombie movies is 1968s Astro Zombies. Star-ring horror legend John Carradine and cult star Tura Satana, the story of super-human monsters on a killing spree has inspired two se-quels and a song of the same name by the Misfits.

The mockumentary Amer-ican Zombies tag line is, Were Here. Were Dead. Get Used to It!

Documenting the every-day lives of a community of zombies in California, its a fake undead propaganda film that echoes the struggles of many minorities who have had to fight for human rights.

Fido, a Canadian film starring Billy Connolly and Carrie-Anne Moss, is set in a world where humans won the zombie war and, as vic-tors, have made the undead their domestic servants.

Funny rather than scary, this one is worth a look to see

the usually motor mouthed Connolly in a fun, shambling and wordless performance.

Strangest of all the non-mainstream zombie mov-ies? Poultrygeist: Night of the Chicken Dead, a movie musical about a fast food chain called American Chick-en Bunker whose meals turn diners into chicken zombies. Gross, gory and gratuitous, badmovienight.com called it one of the sickest, most depraved movies Ive ever seen.

    Trip tips

    Dont languish on your layover

With the busy summer holiday season upon us, Can-adians know that travel delays and long airport layovers can be part of the package. So how do you make the most of that time?

Spend as little time as possible in a line. Check in before arriving at the airport and avoid baggage drop-off lines by bringing only a carry-on piece of luggage. Properly prepare for your security screening. Wear shoes that easily slip off and on, know which sharp objects will literally not fly and dont bring liquids more than 100 ml in size.

Scope out potential dis-tractions eating options, shopping, spa services or even a movie theatre, in advance. Planning out an itinerary for your layover

will ensure the time passes quickly. To assist in your search, load up the Gate Guru app on your iPad or iPhone. It lists all the busi-nesses near each gate along with user reviews, pictures and maps from airports around the world, includ-ing Toronto, Calgary and Halifax.

If you are not part of an airline loyalty program that provides you access to the oasis that is an airport lounge, consider buying your way in. Plaza Premium Lounges located in Toronto, Edmonton and

Vancouver are pay-as-you-go lounges that are not affiliated with a particular airline or class of fare. Enjoy meals, computer ac-cess and a place to escape

the crowds. Or consider making a pit stop at a hotel connected to your airport terminal. They often offer day-use packages for their gym and spa facilities.

Theres few ingredients to this Steamed Clams and Mus-sels with Garlic dish, and you can serve little bowls of it with a bit of the juices ladled over

top, along with thick slices of bread to sop up the juice.

    1. In a large, deep pan, melt the butter over medium low heat and saut the shallot and chili until softened. Add the garlic and continue to stir, cooking, until fragrant; about 2 minutes. Dont let the garlic brown. 2. Add the wine and bring to

a boil, stirring up any bits off the bottom.

    3. Turn the heat down to medium low so that the mix-ture is simmering, then pour in the clams and mussels. Cover the pan with a lid and let them steam for about 5-7 minutes, stirring and check-ing every now and then. Youll know that they are cooked

when the shells have opened. 4. Discard any unopened shells (theres always a few), and dont worry about the ones that are opened only a bit. You can still eat those. Exercise your right to stay healthy on the job

When heading off into the real-world as a new grad, you may find it difficult to get every-thing you want done.

One task that often gets pushed aside is hitting the gym on a regular basis. For most, working out directly before or after work isnt appealing.

Who truly wants to wake up an hour early or get home an hour late? Not me. So, if youre having trouble fitting your work-outs before and after work, when can you? At lunch!

For most full-time employ-ees, youll have an hour-long lunch, which gives you just enough time to get a quick work-out in.

Not sure if its doable? Read on to learn why it completely is and how to do it!

Get everything in orderId like a half hour workout with a side of shower time and spinach salad please! sounds like a little much right? It is possible though with a bit of organization. To do so, pack your work clothes, gym gear and home-made lunch with you all in one bag so its ready to go. This will make it easy for you to go from one thing to the next smoothly.

    Intensity, intensity,

intensitySometimes less is more! Its completely possible to have a short, intense workout if you plan your workouts before hand. For example; if youre going to the gym three times a week on your lunch break, plan three different workouts for you to rotate through each day you go (on your phone, cue cards, etc). This will allow you to make the most of your gym time by having a game plan all while knowing that youre getting everything in that you need to.

Stay energizedWhen working out on your lunch break, its crucial to hy-drate and get the proper nutri-ents. Firstly, working out on an empty stomach isnt healthy. Secondly, you dont want work

to be affected. Have a small snack (like yogurt, veggies and hummus, apple slices, etc.) be-fore your workout and eat your lunch after your workout to keep you on your A-game.

Come in a little earlier, leave a little laterWhen first getting into your lunchtime workout routine, you might take a few extra minutes longer than expected. To ensure that your work isnt being affected, come in a bit early and dont hesitate to stay a bite later than normal. Once you start to get your routine down pat, you should be able to balance everything well.TalenTegg.ca is canadas lead-ing job siTe and online career resource for college and uni-versiTy sTudenTs and recenT graduaTes.

Your body of work: Could a desk lead to your demise?

Think lounging on the couch watching a movie with a family-size bag of Doritos is worse for you than working at your office job? Think again. Research-ers are saying the desk-job environment is the new si-lent killer.

According to a study by researchers at Louisiana State on occupation-related physical activity and its as-sociation with obesity, in the 1960s, nearly half of all jobs required physical activ-ity, and today, less than 20 per cent do. It seems that remaining 40-something per cent has translated into sky-rocketing obesity rates and other health problems, such as poor circulation, carpal

tunnel syndrome, blurred vision and the list doesnt end there.

Those of us with desk jobs usually sit and gawk at a computer for eight hours daily, give or take.

We can see why this would be unnatural, but is it really so bad? Yes its been found that uninter-rupted rest is the under-lying culprit of this health phenomenon. Sitting down in front of a computer for a few hours is okay (lets be honest, if we werent at work, wed probably be do-ing it anyway), but without a break and a comprehen-sive stretch every once in a while, blood cant flow to where it needs to. To make matters worse, when were sitting, we usually exhibit poor posture because thats whats comfortable.

We are simultaneously compromising our eyesight by being held hostage by a blinding screen all day. Our eyes werent made to handle such intense stimu-lation for hours on end, so this irritation also leads to more headaches. And typ-ing while we do this doesnt improve the situation; with our hands working the key-

board and mouse from dawn to dusk, we risk developing carpal tunnel syndrome, tendonitis, or The Claw, which Chandler developed on Friends after playing Pac-man for hours straight. Its clear our bodies were built to do things in moderation.

Are we starting to see why our bodies hate us for our desk jobs? Students and recent grads may be naive to how this can affect them; they may believe theyre young and therefore im-mune to these body strains, but the truth is that invinci-bility doesnt exist. There are also the eager kids who are in the process of hatch-ing their careers and feel they must impress their su-periors by creating a hard-working perception of them-selves. But you know whats really impressive? Knowing your limits and taking a break once youve hit them. Most employers urge break-taking, but it nevertheless may be seen as a weakness by employees.

TalenTegg.ca is canadas lead-ing job siTe and online career resource for college and uni-versiTy sTudenTs and recenT graduaTes.

Labour pains. Did we really think technological innovation was going to make our jobs more convenient without any repercussions?

    Be good to your body

Desk jobs may seem like an attractive work-lifestyle, but its more dangerous than we know: how are we supposed to lead a productive, healthy, and enjoyable work day? The solution:

Move more: For proper blood flow, a limber back bone, minimal strain on your eyes and hands, and your sanity: take short, frequent breaks. Get vertical! Walk around and get a whiff of fresh air if possible. Another good tip to get you moving is to keep essentials out of arms reach. Stash your belongings at the other end of the office so it will force you to take a stroll whenever you need something. Lastly, employers should govern meetings using a stand-only policy just because the chairs are there doesnt mean you have to use them.

Sit right: The reality is we do have to sit sometime, so for when we do sit right. If the possibility of developing a hunchback doesnt motivate you to sit up straight, swap your chair! Exercise balls are the new office chair: fit, fun, func-tional! If youre an extremist and want to take

it a step further, they recently invented the treadmill desk caution: may lead to extreme efficiency.

Eat right: You guessed it spare a few extra minutes to pack a healthy lunch at least three days of the week, and eat it anywhere but your workspace. The desire to use your computer on your lunch to tweet the latest or catch a show is understandable, so if you insist on social media, take your mobile with you so you can remain mobile.

Change your scene: Mix it up! If youre ex-periencing writers block or sheer boredom,

spring for a change and work in different places around the office, if possible. A change of scenery may inspire a change of ideas and keep you alert.

Be efficient: Dont stay late too often. This could lead to psychological

burnout and will eventually result in getting less done later. Work harder in fewer hours; youll feel better about yourself for the time youve freed up for yourself.

There are many changes that come along with transitioning from the student world to the work world. One of the biggest changes that new grads face is in their schedule.

Getting enough sleep is im-portant for everyone, but espe-cially important for new grads as the change in routine tends to be a big one. Gone are the days where you could grab a couple extra minutes (or hours in some cases) of sleep as you needed.

The side effects of sleep dep-rivation are scary, so we have the tips you need to make get-ting enough sleep simple.

Create a routineThe first step in ensuring

that you get enough sleep is setting a routine and sticking to it. To do this, de-termine what time you have to wake up and count seven to nine hours back from there thats your bedtime. For example, if you need to wake up at 6:30 am, youll

need to go to bed between 9:30 p.m. and 11:30 p.m. de-pending on how much rest your body needs.

    Turn off electronics

Set a curfew for your electron-ics. Researchers have found that there might be a correla-tion between using electron-ics before bed and sleep qual-ity. In order to fall asleep, our

body needs time to wind down and it cant do that right after looking at the bright lights of a television, computer or smart-phone. To make sure that your sleep isnt being hampered by

your electronics, try to stay away from using them an hour or two before you hit the pil-low.

Stay away from sugar and caffeineTheres nothing like a sweet treat or warm drink before bed, but try to stay away from anything with high sugar or caffeine levels as they can keep you awake for hours after you drink them.

Say noYou might not be on the same schedule as your friends and family, but you dont need to be sleep deprived because of it. If your friends plans are tiring and affecting your work ethic, dont be afraid to pass every once in a while. This doesnt mean that you should become a hermit, but be aware of when you need to put your sleep first and social-izing second.

Eskimos quarterback Matt Nichols says hell have season-ending surgery on his injured knee. DEAN BENNETT/THE CANADIAN PRESS

Reckless play costs Nichols the season

It was going to be a break-through year for career backup quarterback Matt Nichols.

Instead, the 26-year-old Edmonton Eskimos pivot an-nounced Tuesday that hell have season-ending surgery on the torn anterior cruciate liga-ment in his right knee.

Its an injury that reinforces Nichols reputation for fearless play but also suggests the Cali-fornia native is becoming his own worst enemy.

I just went down and felt a little twist, Nichols said last Friday after the injury in the 31-24 loss to the Saskatchewan Roughriders at Commonwealth Stadium.

It was late in the first quar-ter when Nichols threw a slant pass to receiver Ed Gant. The ball bounced off Gants hands and was caught by Riders de-fensive back Carlos Thomas, who raced 30 yards untouched down the sideline to pay dirt, led by defensive end Kenny Rowe.

It was an easy pick-six in a meaningless game, but then came Nichols barrelling in, de-termined to catch Thomas at the goal-line. He ran straight at Rowe who delivered a hit to the shoulder.

Nichols legs seemed to get caught under him and down he went, clutching his right knee as the Riders celebrated the TD.

Nichols is known for his headstrong play, but when training camp opened June 1

he said the plan in 2013 was for more discretion.

Some of the situations I was in last year thrown into games late when we were down by a lot I felt the need to try and spark the team a little bit, Nichols said at the time.

Its a long season, (but) if its the end of a game and its third and five and I need an extra yard for a first down Im going to do anything I can to get that first down. Earlier in the game Ill probably play it a little bit more safe.

Nichols was also injured in last years East Division semi-final against the Toronto Argo-nauts. He was flushed quickly out of the pocket and hauled down from behind by Argo de-fensive end Ronald Flemons.

He tried to fight through the sack and managed to throw the ball away but in doing so got his feet trapped under him and gruesomely broke his left fibula and turned his ankle 180 degrees.

Months earlier, Nichols was concussed by two defenders diving for a extra few yards against Hamilton. THE CANADIAN PRESS

For years, Ray Allens routine has not changed. Show up for work hours earlier than just about everyone else, go onto the court and take hundreds of jump shots.

It paid off for him on Tues-day.

And hell be back out there on Thursday since the Miami Heat season still has one game remaining.

Allens three-pointer with 5.2 seconds left in the fourth quarter capped a huge Miami rally plus essentially took the championship trophy out of

San Antonios hands, and the Heat found a way in overtime to hold off the Spurs for a 103-100 win.
