Tertiary Youth Guarantee Programmes
2013BEAUTY & HAIRDRESSING*This programme provides students with introductory skills into the beauty and hairdressing industry. Practical skills will be gained including, makeup, cosmetics and beauty products and participation in client days in our on-campus salons. Gain industry speci�c knowledge in health and safety, customer service, time management and workplace communication.Starts at our Porirua campus on 18 February and our Kāpiti campus on 18 February and 29 July
WORK SKILLS [RETAIL & COSMETIC SERVICES]Learn the skills to work in the retail industry as a customer service representative or cosmetic assistant. Learn how to communicate for work, provide professional customer service, word processing and health and safety. Students will gain introductory make-up techniques, nail art and cosmetology knowledge.Starts at our Porirua campus on 18 February and 29 July
OUTDOOR ADVENTURE*Learn to kayak, rock climb, abseil, camp, tramp and survive. This programme will provide growth for personal and professional development. Students will learn skills enabling them to safely look after themselves and others far o� the beaten track. Students will be challenged mentally, physically and emotionally. Learn to manage risk on adventures in the beautiful New Zealand outdoor environment.Starts at our Kāpiti campus on 18 February
WORK SKILLS [HOSPITALITY & TOURISM]Learn how to deliver and exceed customer’s expectations and e�ectively deal with complaints. Students will gain an understanding of food safety methods and receive an industry certi�cate endorsing this. Gain hands-on experience in food preparation, making non-alcoholic beverages and learn the art of co�ee making in our on-campus cafés. Learn about the New Zealand tourism industry including the careers that are available.Starts at our Porirua campus on 18 February and our Kāpiti and Wellington campuses on 18 February and 29 July
WORK SKILLS [OFFICE SKILLS & COMPUTING]Gain skills and knowledge to work in various o�ce environments. Learn positive work attitudes, e�ective customer service and workplace communication skills along with a range of computing and administrations skills. Learn in our simulated o�ce environment. Gain skills in Microsoft O�ce including Word, Excel, E-mail and PowerPoint.Starts at our Porirua, Wellington and Kāpiti campuses on 18 February and 29 July
TRADE SKILLSTry out a range of trade skills including electrical, motor mechanics, plumbing and carpentry, road safety and driving. This programme prepares students for further study on one of our full-time trades programmes.Starts at our Industry Training Centre in Porirua on 11 February and 3 July
AUTOMOTIVE ENGINEERING*Learn the skills to start apprenticeships in any of the motor industry trades. Students will be introduced to the workforce through work placements.Starts at our Industry Training Centre in Porirua on 4 February and 3 July
PLUMBING, DRAINLAYING, GASFITTING & ROOFING*Work towards becoming an apprentice plumber, drainlayer, gas�tter and roofer. Be introduced to the workforce through work placements.Starts at our Industry Training Centre in Porirua on 11 February and 3 July
CARPENTRY*Work towards becoming an apprentice carpenter on this programme, approved by the Building and Construction Industry Training Organisation (BCITO). Students will be introduced to the workforce through work placements.Starts at our Industry Training Centre in Porirua on 11 February and 3 July, Kāpiti campus on 11 February and Te Wānanga o Raukawa, Ōtaki on 1 July
ELECTRICAL ENGINEERING*Learn the knowledge and skills to commence work as an apprentice electrician. Be introduced to the workforce through work placements.Starts at our Industry Training Centre in Porirua on 11 February and 3 July
WORK SKILLS [SPECIALISATION IN MUSIC & DRAMA]This programme will appeal to students who have some experience with music; playing an instrument, singing or playing in a band and drama; acting, singing and dance, or to those students who would like to participate and learn about music and drama.Starts at our Porirua campus mid February
GAIN SKILLS AND CONFIDENCE TO CONTINUE YOUR STUDIES OR ENTER THE WORKFORCEApplication process:
d Students are required to complete a Whitireia Application to Enrol form and a Tertiary Education Commission (TEC) Youth Guarantee Enrolment form.
d Students will be asked to attend an interview as part of the application process. A parent/caregiver will need to attend this interview also.
To enrol students:
d Must be 16-17 years of age at study commencement date
d Can be turning 18 years of age the day after the study commencement date
d Must be enrolling in full-time study in 2013
d Must be a New Zealand citizen or have New Zealand permanent residency*Additional entry criteria applies
