May 12 – July 7Opening Sunday, May 12 • 2 – 6 PMOpening day performances by Skowhegan School of Painting & Sculpture

In collaboration with Independent Curators International (ICI), Socrates Sculpture Park presents do it (outside), an exhibition conceived of and curated by Hans Ulrich Obrist. With historical antecedents in Dada and Fluxus, do it (outside) is a selection of artists’ instructions interpreted by other artists, performers, community groups, and the public all within an exhibition space designed specifically for Socrates by Christoff : Finio Architecture. In the last 20 years, versions of do it have been presented in over 50 venues worldwide, giving new meaning to the concept of the “Exhibition in Progress.” do it (outside) at Socrates will be the first pre-sentation of the exhibition in New York City and the first to be presented completely outdoors in a public art venue.

Exhibits Folly 2013

May 12 – August 4Opening Sunday, May 12 • 2 – 6 PM

tree wood by Toshihiro Oki architect p.c., with team members Toshihiro Oki, Jen Wood, and Jared Diganci, is the winning proposal for Folly, an annual design and build competition organized by The Architectural League of New York and Socrates Sculpture Park. This residency and exhibition explore the intersections between architecture, design, and sculpture through an interpretation of the architectural folly. Especially popular among the Romantics of the 18th and 19th centu-ries, architectural follies are small-scale structures, which often have no discernible purpose and are generally placed within a garden or landscape as a means to draw the eye to specific points or to frame a view. The folly is a perfect subject for architects to investigate materiality, spatial interaction, and concepts about our built environment. This architectural folly is about the ideals of Nature and Man-made coexisting in our increasingly crowded world. This simple structure is composed entirely of 2×4 studs and nails bought from the local hardware stores. The trees fill the structure. A single chandelier will hang inside among the leaves and chime in the gentle winds.

Beyond the Hedges (Slivered Gazebo)

Opening Sunday, May 12 • 2 – 6 PMBrooklyn-based artist Heather Rowe investigates the transitional space between architecture, sculpture, and installation through perspectival fram-ing, formal inversion, and material deconstruction. Rowe’s latest work, Beyond the Hedges (Slivered Gazebo), is an installation of spatial slices and fractured corridors presented outdoors at Socrates Sculpture Park. Beyond the Hedges (Slivered Gazebo) inverts the routine relationships we have with our surroundings by restructuring the familiar and re-imagining architectural experiences. While we often experience architecture in a state of distraction, Rowe invites us to examine its details recombined as sculpture. Beyond the Hedges interprets the traditional gazebo or trellis—structures typically placed within a park to frame picturesque views—as a sliced and cropped dimensional space that, sandwiched between pieces of plywood, becomes the framed view. Suspended within the plywood shapes are fragile moments of the garden pavilion, frozen in precarious states of decay or undo-ing, that are inspired by the line drawings from Peter Joel Harrison’s illustrated book Gazebos and Trellises (see image left).

2013 Emerging Artist Fellowship ExhibitionSeptember 8, 2013 – March 30, 2014

Opening Sunday, September 8 • 2 – 6 PMThis annual exhibition features 15 new commissions by the 2013 Emerging Artist Fellows. EAF13 artists work in the Park’s outdoor studio throughout the summer to create sculpture and installations that respond to the land-scape in mysterious, compelling, and, at times, provocative ways. Rather than being a zeitgeist or thematic exhibition, each artist has a distinct art-work that embodies his or her individuality, passion, and exploration of art in the public sphere. During the course of the summer, the public can view and experience the artists creating and installing their works in the Park.

Kite FlightSaturday, May 11 • 11 AM – 2 PM

Socrates and The Noguchi Museum present this annual kite event. Using recycled materials, children and their families draw inspiration from the Park’s fantastic view of the Manhattan skyline to build and decorate kites, and then fly them in the Park.

LIC Bike ParadeSaturday, June 8

11 AM – 3 PM: Bike Repairs / Helmet Fitting & Giveaway / Workshops 3 PM: Parade along Vernon Blvd. (leaving from Broadway entrance gate) 3 – 5 PM: Waterfront Celebration at Queensbridge Park

In preparation for the parade, children and their families are invited to repair their bikes with Recycle-A-Bicycle; get free helmets and fittings with the Department of Transportation; and decorate their bikes with Socrates artists.

And for the first time, we invite you to compete in our Kinetic Sculpture Challenge! Let your creativity roll... literally. Enter your moveable, human-powered sculpture-vehicle and parade it down Vernon Boulevard, with awards for best engineering, best art, and best costumes. Summer Solstice Celebration Friday, June 21 • 5 PM until Dusk

Bring your friends and family to Socrates’ annual Solstice event to wel-come the summer and celebrate the longest day of the year! Be creative in Solstice art-making workshops presented in partnership with Free Style Arts Association, Materials for the Arts, The Noguchi Museum, and Queens Museum of Art; get your face painted by Agostino Arts; have a picnic; and enjoy the view as the sun sets over the Manhattan skyline!

This season Socrates taps into ancient Mayan energy while we recharge our mind, body, and spirit. Participate in a special Solstice ritual performed by Urban Shaman Mama Donna, practice yoga at sunset, or take part in an event-culminating, community drum circle with Toca & Alé Alé Drummers... but not before the evening gets kicked off with an exhibi-tion of action-packed, high-flying Lucha Libre! (Masked Mexican Wrestling).

Halloween Harvest FestivalSaturday, October 19 • 11 AM – 3 PM

Bring your friends and family to Socrates’ annual Halloween Harvest Festival. Make a costume with Socrates artists; listen to live music; enjoy a special art-making workshop with Free Style Arts Association; get your face painted by Agostino Arts; enter your dog in our annual Canine Costume Contest; and try harvest foods from local restaurants.

This season, invoke the spirits of Queens as we share the stories and legends of this historic waterway. Join the Greater Astoria Historical Society for a walking tour and learn about the horrors and mysteries of the treacherous East River, from churning whirlpools and electric eels. Starting under the Hell Gate Bridge in Astoria Park (Shore Blvd.), tour participants will stroll through Old Astoria Village and walk along the East River water-front to Socrates Sculpture Park where their journey will culminate with ghostly performances of the area’s haunted history, led by the Hell Gate Kid! Each week during the month of August, a new choreographer will be in residence creating new works on a site-specific stage. Visitors to the Park will witness the working process of these dance-makers and experience fully produced, cutting edge performance every Saturday.

Join instructor Luz Flemming as he guides you to create simple yet well-crafted furnishings to take home. In collaboration with Minor Miracles and City Year, participants will work on weekly lessons plans relating to exciting and rewarding careers in the New York City Police Department (NYPD), New York City Fire Depart-ment (FDNY) and Emergency Medical Services Division (EMT), the Urban Park Rangers, and the United States Coast Guard (USCG). This 6 week, creative arts workshop will intertwine career exploration, fitness, life skills, and self-empowerment, introducing participants to NYC’s most coura-geous professionals. Hosted by Socrates, these peer-to-peer workshops are led by students of LeAp’s Public Art Program. LeAp’s young artist activists, whose issue-based work will be on exhibit in NYC parks citywide this summer, will con-duct workshops with other youth to create two large-scale artworks that address critical community issues. LeAp’s Public Art Program empowers young people to have a voice in their communities by expressing them-selves on major social issues through the creation and public exhibition of art. Inspired by the art of Joseph Cornell, we will use a variety of traditional and non-traditional art materials to make memory boxes. We will sculpt and paint, cut and glue, assemble and embellish, and add glitter when necessary, as we find ways to represent our summer stories in a neatly packaged container.

Welcome to the Mexican tradition of piñatas. Piñatas are brightly colored papier-mache sculptures, filled with treats and bashed open during fes-tive events. Participants will learn different techniques on how to decorate the papier-mache and plaster skin of piñatas that will be filled and delight-fully smashed!

Summer Outdoor Art-Making WorkshopsPresented in partnership with Con Edison.

Weekdays, July 8 - August 30 10 AM – 12 PM & 1 PM – 3 PM

These free workshops offer diverse groups of children from neighborhood youth agencies, community groups, summer schools, and day camps the opportunity to participate in hands-on activities inspired by exhibitions at the Park. Artists run two sessions of their workshop each day of the week and teach children fundamental and contemporary art-making techniques. Groups can sign up for a single workshop or a combination of weekly work-shops. Registration and scheduling will be on a first come, first served basis. Get in Shape With Your Own Shape with Mads LynnerupJuly 8 – 12

What does art and physical exercise have in common? Using wire and plaster gauze, participants will make their own unique shapes and trans-form their sculptures into a creative piece of fitness equipment. Once all the sculptures are completed the whole class will do a group fitness exercise together using their own sculptures.

Exquisite Corpse Mud Speak with Rachel HigginsJuly 15 – 19

Get your hands dirty and uncover the imagination of your friends! Based on the Surrealist game in which words and images are collectively assembled to create blind collaborative drawings, participants will translate the words and ideas of their peers into 3-dimensional figures using clay. We will learn basic assemblage techniques and create an exquisite creature of our col-lective minds!

Amphoras for Us with Cecile ChongJuly 22 – 26

Inspired by traditional and contemporary signs, symbols, logos, and histori-cal figures across cultures, participants will design and paint their very own amphora (classical vase) out of plastic bottles.

Build a Meal with Chakaia BookerJuly 29 – August 2

Using clay and discarded organic, manmade, and craft materials, partici-pants will sculpt food items from each of the food groups to build a bal-anced meal. Each group can make a favorite dish, snack, or come up with their own food creation. Bon appétit!

Watercolor for a Brighter Future with Lillian GersonAugust 5 – 9

What do you think the world will look like in 100 years? Lets paint it! First we’ll watercolor the world as we see it today. Then we will imagine what the future will look like, while discussing subjects like climate change, rising seas, and increased pollution. We’ll paint our ideas of what nature and hu-man civilization will look like in years ahead, and overlay our future and pres-ent day images to create our very own multi-layered, time travel picture.

Printing in the Park with Rob SwainstonAugust 12 – 16

Nature printing is a time-honored printmaking technique in which natural objects are used to print. After learning some simple printing techniques, participants will go on a short scavenger hunt in the Park to find something to use from nature. Did you know leaves can be inked and printed like a re-lief, wiped and printed like an etching, or used as positive/negative stencils for hand printing?!

Coat of Arms with Kimberly KayAugust 19 – 23

Young student, fly your flag higher! While examining symbolism, partici-pants will develop their own personal Coat of Arms. We will start with drawings that we transfer to fabric flags. Whether their crest be flanked with bears, lions, stars, or dolphins, participants will work with a variety of textile applications and skills to turn these designs into expressive flags to be flown high.

Totem Poles with Paul DuncanAugust 26 – 30

The word totem is derived from the Native American Ojibwe word odoo-dem, meaning “his kinship group.” Each participant will generate a symbol that has personal power and meaning, then as a group add them together to form a powerful totem. Using a variety assemblage techniques and materials, participants will collaboratively construct a group totem pole reflecting their ‘Kinship Group.’

CPF’s Coastal Classroom works with schools and community groups and is designed to cultivate knowledge, aware-ness, and stewardship of the East River and the tidal waters that surround New York City.
