Happy New Year!!! It is very exciting to
see everyone back here at Nye to start 2013.
I hope that everyone had a good break, en-
joyed the time with family and maybe even
did a little sled riding. January is an impor-
tant month in school. It is the second half of
the 2nd marking period and it is that time of
year when we really get into the "meat and
potatoes" of learning. January is a time when
we build consistency in our learning habits
and we start to make headway into learning
new ideas and concepts. It is also a month
with very few interruptions (unless it snows)
so we are able to maintain a routine that aids
in the development of important skills.
Speaking of snow, we have already seen our
first three snow storms of the school year
while we were away on break. This re-
minded me that we all need to stay prepared
in case it does snow and we have to miss
school. Included in this newsletter is a re-
minder of the different ways that closings,
cancellations, delays and early dismissals
will be broadcast to you. Please take a mo-
ment to review this information so that in
case of a snow event, you are ready and are
able to stay informed. For any of the differ-
ent ways school can be affected by snow, the
Lower Dauphin School District will use the
auto dialer system to send out an an-
nouncement to parents. If you have
changed your phone number since the
start of the school year, you might want
to contact the office with the most current
information to help ensure that you will
be notified when the auto dialer is used.
Finally, if the is the need for an early dis-
missal from school due to weather, the
Annie B Nye Elementary Facebook page
will be a great source of information.
Finally, if you have an opportunity,
please check out the Annie B Nye Face-
book page. It is full of useful informa-
tion and it is loaded with pictures from
our different events and happenings here
at Nye.
It is great to be back in school and to hear
the excitement of learning ringing
through the building. I hope that every-
one is ready to get back to work and to
give their very best to everything they do.

JANUARY ‘13
The winter season is upon us and
that means it is time to bundle up.
We will still be going outside for
recess during the winter. Please
make sure that your child wears a
coat, hat and gloves to school.
While in class, I would encourage
all students to wear clothing that
will keep them warm. If your child
is prone to getting chilly, have
them wear a sweater or sweatshirt
to school in addition to their coat,
to help keep them comfortable in
the classroom.
PARENTS AT LUNCH: I know that many of
you like to come in occasionally and join your
child for lunch. This can be a special time
and I know that the students love to see you.
Coming for a visit is still welcomed but I
must ask that you please do not bring in any
kind of fast food from McDonald’s,
Wendy’s, etc. Make the special treat
the fact that you are able to come in
and join your child at lunch.
This is your
monthly reminder
that we need to
have you keep the weeks of
March 11th to April 25th
free of any trips or school
time appointments. These
are the weeks of the PA
State and school district
testing and make-up test-
ing. Thanks!
Thanks to the PTO! Thanks to Mrs. Dreon & Mrs. Miller for the organization of the Santa
Store and Santa Workshop. The students had a ball! Also, a big thanks to all
PTO volunteers that have helped with all our extra activities so far this school
year. Your time and talents are greatly appreciated by all students and staff.
Another Thank You to Mrs. Rallis & Mrs. Sierer and the PTO for the luncheon
provided for the Nye Staff on December 19th. We enjoyed it very much!

We will offer Memory Books
again this year. A flyer will
be sent home this month.
This is your only opportu-
nity to order a book. Only
the copies requested will be
ordered. Please do not miss
the chance for this school
year’s memories.
Thanks to all members of the Nye family that do-nated items for our food baskets. A special thank you to all who helped pack holiday food baskets. Such generosity and dedication is certainly appreciated during this holiday sea-son.
Did you know? We have 8 Madisons, 6 Jacobs, 6 Logans, 6 Ethans, 5 Ryans, 4 Alyssas, 3 Allisons, 2 Katelyns, 3 Taylors, 3 Tylers, 3 Hunters, 3 Dominics, 5 Ellas, 3 Emmas….you get the pic-ture. When sending permission slips, dismissal notes and correspondence to school about your stu-dent, it is so important to put both the first and last name of your child. Couple that with a parent that has a different last name than their student and it makes for unnecessary classroom interrup-tions and many extra phone calls.
We’re blue about blue cards! Per LDSD Board Policy, every student absence requires a written excuse from either a parent, a doctor or dentist. It is your student’s responsibility to submit their excuse to the office the day they return to school. If a student fails to bring in an excuse after five school days, the absence is declared unlawful. If you receive multiple requests to complete a Blue Card, it’s probably means your original report is still in a book bag and was not submitted to the office by your student. Please return them within the five day window.

Emergency School Closings Emergency school delays and closings due to inclement
weather will be announced on a number of local radio and TV stations. School delay and closing announce-
ments will be made for the LOWER DAUPHIN SCHOOL DISTRICT. Individual buildings (i.e. “Nye Ele-
mentary”) are not announced.
The announcement will indicate that the Lower Dauphin School District is closed. School closing an-
nouncements will be on the following radio stations: WRVV FM 97.3; WHP AM 580; WNNK FM 104;
KOOL FM 99.3; WITF FM 89.5; WHYL FM 102; NICE FM 92.1; WTPA FM 93.5; WKRZ FM 107; BOB
FM 94.9 and WQXA FM 105.7. School closing announcements will also be made on the following television
stations: WPMT/FOX TV 43; WHP TV 21; WLYH UPN 15; WGAL TV 8; WITF TV 33 and WHTM TV 27.
In the event that the weather dictates a need for extra time to get to school in the morning, there is a
possibility of a one or two hour delay to the start of school. This announcement will be made on the same ra-
dio and TV stations mentioned above. The announcement will generally state that the Lower Dauphin School
District is on a one or two hour delay schedule. Listen to the radio or watch the television in the morning prior
to school if you suspect a possibility of a school closing or delay.
If school is already in session and must close early due to weather or other emergencies, these same
broadcast stations will make the appropriate announcements. You may get up-to-date information by calling
the LD INFORMALINE 566-5320 or 944-1668, or use the LD web site www.ldsd.org; scroll down to
School Closing Info. The announcement will generally state that the Lower Dauphin School District will have
a one or two hour early dismissal. Please stay tuned when weather conditions are threatening.
