History

Keeneland inaugurated the January Horses of All Ages Sale more than fifty years ago, conducting the first editions in 1956 and 1957. Following a three-year hiatus, the January Sale was resumed in 1961 and has been held annually since. As the name implies, the January Horses of All Ages Sale offers a variety of racing and breeding stock, including broodmares, broodmare prospects, yearlings, racing prospects, stallions and stallion prospects, and stallion shares and seasons.

Location: Paris, KentuckyOwners: Craig and Holly BandoroffWebsite: www.denalistud.com

Background: Craig and Holly Bandoroff’s Denali Stud near Paris, Kentucky, is one of the Thoroughbred in-dustry’s leading blood-stock consignors.

Craig Bandoroff was a jockey in New Jersey in the early 1970s until a spill at Garden State

Park in 1974 left him without the use of his right arm, forcing him to explore other career paths within the industry. The Ban-doroffs each gained experience working in various bloodstock and sales capacities, and in 1990 they opened Denali Stud. “Denali” is derived from the name given by the Eskimos to Mt. McKinley and means “the great one.”

In the late 1990s, Bob Lewis and his wife, Beverly, sent their champion racemare Ser-ena’s Song to Denali when she was retired. Denali has sold several of Serena Song’s offspring, including Group 1 winner Sophis-ticat, by Storm Cat, for $3.4 million at the 2000 Keeneland July Selected Yearling Sale; Grade 2 winner Harlington, by Unbridled, for $2.8 million at the 2003 September Sale; and Colourful Score, a colt by Storm Cat, for $3.5 million, at the 2005 September Sale.

Denali sold champion Uncle Mo for $160,000 as a weanling at the 2008 Novem-ber Sale.

A Maryland native, McDonald holds a de-gree in Animal Sciences from Cornell University and worked at various Maryland racetracks as an exercise rider and assistant trainer. He was an officer of Fasig-Tipton Company Inc. prior to buying Eaton Sales.

Eaton Sales served as agent for the dis-persal of the W.T. Young family’s Overbrook Farm, which in 2009/2010 sold 205 horses for $38,606,000, ranking it as the third-larg-est dispersal in Keeneland sales history.

Eaton, as agent for longtime client Brush-wood Stable, consigned the top-priced year-ling at the 2012 September Sale, selling a colt by Distorted Humor out of Grade 1 winner Mushka, for $1.65 million to Shadwell Estate Company.

Cauthen, Four Stars’ Managing Partner, is a third-generation Ken-tucky horseman and brother to Racing Hall of Fame jockey Steve Cauthen and blood-stock advisor Doug Cauthen. An attorney, Cauthen previously worked as counsel and bloodstock advisor at Walmac Farm.

Greathouse helps run his family’s Glen-crest Farm near Mid-way, Kentucky. Glen-crest has developed a number of significant stallions, among them Clever Trick and Wa-vering Monarch. Such outstanding horses as Grade 1 winners Panty

Raid, Honey Ryder and Devil May Care have carried the Glencrest Farm colors.

A native of Texas, Jones developed Wal-mac Farm into an international stallion sta-tion with such leading sires as Nureyev, Miswaki and Alleged. In 2005, he sold Wal-mac to his son, John T.L. Jones III, and Rob-ert Trussell and remains as Director Emeri-tus.

Kenny honed his bloodstock skills in Canada and California before moving to Ken-tucky in 1993. He pur-chased future Brood-mare of the Year In Neon for John Franks and bought the dams of champions Chilukki and Phantom Light prior to their stakes-pro-ducing success.

Shadai FarmLocation: Hokkaido, JapanPrincipal: Teruya “Terry” Yoshida

Background: The Yoshida family’s Shadai Farm, one of the world’s most prominent Thoroughbred operations, is operated joint-ly by brothers Katsumi and Teruya Yoshida, known collectively as the Shadai Group.

The Yoshida brothers’ grandfather, Zenuske Yoshida, was one of the first Japanese to import Thoroughbreds from the United States on a major scale. He died in 1946, leaving the family business to his son Zenya Yoshida, who founded Shadai in 1955.

Zenya Yoshida had formerly owned a stud farm in the Tokyo region that the Japanese government purchased in 1958 as part of the land for Narita International Airport. Yoshida used the money to buy land on Hokkaido, the northern island that is now Japan’s principal center of Thor-oughbred breeding, and developed Shadai Farm there.

Shadai Stallion Station currently stands about 28 stallions, headlined by 2002 Kentucky Derby (G1) winner War Emblem and two-time Japanese Horse of the Year and leading sire Deep Impact. The latter is a son of Sunday Silence, winner of the 1989 Kentucky Derby (G1), Preakness (G1) and Breeders’ Cup Classic (G1) who entered stud at Shadai in 1991 and became a peren-nial leading sire. He died in 2002 at the age of 16.

Shadai has been a prominent buyer at Keeneland, paying a sale-topping $1.4 million for Grade 1 winner Ave (GB) at the 2011 January Sale, and $1.85 million for Lucky One, carrying a full sibling to champion Blind Luck, at the 2010 Novem-ber Sale.

Northern Farm is both a breeding and training facility which is home to 2,400 horses that include broodmares, stallions and racing stock.

The Yoshida family is a dominant force in Japanese racing and breeding. Northern Farm ranked as Japan’s leading breeder in 2012, unseating Terry Yoshida’s Shadai Farm, which finished second.

Among the many prominent horses bred by Northern Farm are two-time Japanese Horse of the Year and Triple Crown winner Deep Impact, a son of Sunday Silence who is now exerting his influence as a lead-ing sire in Japan; champion older mare Admire Groove, twice winner of the Queen Elizabeth II Commemorative Cup in Japan; the hugely popular filly Buena Vista, win-ner of the 2011 Japan Cup (G1); and recent Group 1 stakes winners Vermillion (Kawa-saki Kinen), Apapane (Japan Oaks, 1,000 Guineas and Victoria Mile), Rose Kingdom (Japan Cup), and Joie de Vivre (Hanshin Juvenile Fillies), among others.

Yoshida has purchased a number of high-profile race fillies and mares at Keene-land, paying $1.4 million for Grade 1 stakes producer Topliner, in foal to Medaglia d’Oro, to top the 2012 January Sale; $2.1 million for Grade 1 stakes winner Zazu at the 2012 November Breeding Stock Sale; and $2.25 million for Horse of the Year Azeri at the 2009 November Sale.
