Little Dixie - lovingly called Doodle-Buns! Arriving in 2007, she has her own way to wrap herself around your heart. Who wouldn’t love a sparkling white little pony?

Like many of our “kids” Dixie has bouts of laminitis and requires frequent hoof trimmings. Doodles is a very vocal little horse and lets you know exactly what she wants. And for a little horse, she sure has a deep voice.

One of Dixie’s favorite things is when young people

come to Misfit Acres to meet all the horses. In our front pasture are

Shadow, Dixie, Faith, Little Boy, and Peanut. We enjoy taking visitors into that pasture where they can interact with these little cuties. Dixie always manages to get right in the middle of everyone so she is sure she gets her share of attention

and brushing.

Dixie is a very slight-build mini-horse and never puts on any weight which is probably okay due to her hoof challenges In the winter time though, she looks like a cuddly little polar bear! Come spring shedding season, we are sure there are countless bird nests lined with white pony hair.

Fall/Winter 2013 Volume 7 Issue 2

Happy Fall everyone!! With the days getting shorter, you can really notice the horses are beginning to fluff out with their winter coats. Sure signs that Old Man Winter is on his way.

We are bypassing the Resident’s Corner article that generally appears on page 3 and are using the flyer for our 11th Annual Fundraiser – Celebrating New Lives for Horses! We hope you will be able to join us and spend the day sharing the “Magic of Horses”. For those of you, who have attended before, please note that we changed the ending time to 4 pm rather than 5 pm to enable us to get everything cleaned up and get home for afternoon senior horse care without rushing around. And bring a jacket or sweater as the building is not heated.

Welcome to Fall/Winter 2013

We proudly thank Modern

Woodmen Insurance for their matching grant of $2500 for the August 25 fundraising event held at the Henderson RoadHaus. This was one busy day! Ladies from that area put on a Vendor/Craft show with all proceeds going to Misfit Acres, featuring silent auction, bake sale, and tons of vendors for everyone’s shopping pleasure.

Modern Woodmen Insurance generously offered the matching grant. There were so many

participants involved in this day as well as individual donors, we are still working on Thank you letters. Very special Thank you to Tina and Sue who organized

this event, to Karen from the Henderson Independent, and to the RoadHaus and staff for hosting it.

This was a totally new area for Misfit Acres to be a part of. We truly enjoyed this opportunity to visit with so many people regarding our mission and animals in general. One thing is for sure – everyone who is crazy about animals has stories to share and we love to hear them.

Jan and Alan – where do we start to thank you? Each year Jan makes a quilt in honor of her late sister Kerry and donates her work to Misfit Acres annual fundraiser. This year she has designed a very unique Cowboy quilt. This theme is in tribute to the Elm Creek Cowboys Theater Company as they provide their “High Noon” gunfight re-enactments at our fundraiser. This one-of-a-kind piece will go home with the lucky winner from our quilt raffle. Tickets are $3 each and winner need not be present – but who wouldn’t want to be there to carry this beautiful art home with them? Please contact us to get your tickets for your chance to win.

Thank You!!

We could go on and on about our annual fundraiser but page 3 says it all. Instead, how ‘bout some more funny horse laws to end this issue with everyone smiling? Somewhere, these are actual laws on the books:

•A 1907 Cumberland County, Tennessee statute reads: "Speed while on horseback upon county roads will be limited to three miles an hour unless the rider sees a bailiff who does not appear to have had a drink in thirty days, then the horseman will be permitted to make what he can." •Figure out this 1913 Massachusetts law: "Whosoever rides a horse on any public way-laid out under authority or law recklessly or while under the influence of liquor shall be punished; thereby imposing upon the horseman the duty of finding out at his peril whether certain roads had been laid out recklessly or while under the influence of liquor before riding over them."

•Male horse buffs in Basalt, Nevada, are prohibited from eating onions between the hours of 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. while out riding.Law specifies only men! •Ice cream lovers beware in Cotton Valley, Louisiana. Citizens aren't allowed to eat an ice cream cone while on horseback in public places.
