WHAT IS THE BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT TRAINING PROGRAM?

The Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewerage District (MMSD) initiated the Business Development Training Program (a component of the Workforce Development Training and Placement Program), which is supported by the City of Milwaukee and managed by Prism Technical Institute, to build the capacity and capabilities of small, women, minority, emerging and disadvantaged enterprises so that they may better compete for and successfully complete MMSD contracts and other construction industry projects.

In collaboration with established businesses, organizations and mentors, program participants take part in customized training, assessments, coaching and mentoring. Small, women, minority, emerging and disadvantaged business owners and managers can submit an application to enroll in any module that is of interest -- at no cost. WHO IS THE MILWAUKEE METROPOLITAN SEWERAGE DISTRICT (MMSD)?

The Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewerage District (MMSD)is a regional government agency that provides water reclamation and fl ood management services for about 1.1 million customers in 28 communities in the Greater Milwaukee Area. It serves 411 square miles that cover all, or segments of six watersheds. Established by state law, the District is governed by 11 commissioners with taxing authority.

Besides their core responsibilities, MMSD recognizes its social responsibility to create a robust regional economy and to diversify its construction workforce. To that end, MMSD maintains an extensive Workforce Development Training and Placement Program to serve as the catalyst for accomplishing these MMSD goals:

• Ensure a diverse and qualifi ed workforce exists for its capital projects.

• Increase the capacity of minority and women-owned businesses in the construction and engineering industries to compete for the District’s capital projects.

• Create family-supporting jobs to impact Milwaukee’s local poverty level.

The WDTP Program is comprised of the following four components:

Business Development:

• Increases the capacity of Small/Women/Minority Business Enterprises to compete for MMSD projects and in the construction industry at large.

WHO IS PRISM TECHNICAL MANAGEMENT & MARKETING SERVICES, LLC?

Prism Technical is a private sector entity that specializes in project and construction management, business development training and corporate internship training and placement. Prism, started in 1995, works to ensure the diversity of workers and legitimate contracting practices on major construction projects funded by tax payers. This has allowed Prism to advise many forward thinking companies and governmental entities on matters of process, management, knowledge transfer and strategy.

After a decade of operation and more than $2 billion in construction projects and unprecedented success on Wisconsin’s most prestigious projects, Prism has accumulated an unparalleled catalog of experiences working with small, women and minority owned businesses. These experiences led Prism executives to recognize not only the need to create educational programs that elevated the business skills of these small businesses but to keep talented individuals within the city limits to continue to contribute to the success of local companies. Prism has been a partner with MMSD since 2005 and has managed the Business Development Training Program and RISE (The Milwaukee Regional Internships in Science and Engineering Initiative) to meet these needs.

“The training helped me realize that there are challenges to any business and some that are unique to small/minority businesses, but none are insurmountable. The training forced me to step back and think about how we do things and ways to improve and prosper. It is so easy to get caught up in the day to day operations and fail to think about the big picture. We have doubled in size since participating in the program. I have and will continue to recommend the training to other businesses and I am appreciative of MMSD’s commitment to small business.”
