The Honor Awards Program of AIA Kentucky is dedicated to recognizing and applauding works of architecture exhibiting design excellence, as well as to promoting public awareness and appreciation of the diversity, quality and scope of Kentucky architecture.

The 2013 Awards Program included 38 projects submitted by 28 firms from across the Commonwealth. The jury was directed to evaluate each project based on the success with which the project met its own individual requirements. Entries were weighed individually, not in comparison with one another, and the jury was directed to select as many or as few projects as it determined to be worthy of recognition.

Jury Comments:

“This delightful gem is just a small part of the full reward we are sure all who clearly put their hearts and souls into seeing it through have now realized. Bravo! New elements are rigorously detailed without being heavy handed, which allows these spaces to serve as a fitting quiet backdrop for this historic church. The jury appreciated the humble and noble place and the story that led to its current existence. The project is beautifully imagined in program, composition and detail - and clearly the result of committed community members, professionals, and craftspeople. An exemplary case of cultural stewardship and sustainability.”

Jury Comments:

“Great example of creativity and the redefinition of space. Exhibits an attractive blend of playfulness, flexibility of function and filtered daylight. Thoughtfully conceived and diagrammed. The constraints established early in the design process allowed for a detailed design solution with architectural rigor. The jury appreciated not only the architect’s participation in the PARKing community event, but also the inventive concept, rigorous design and the well-crafted execution. Its continued existence and use is testament to its contribution to the public realm.”

Jury Comments:

“Nice to see the investment made to turn an ordinary utilitarian type building into one contributing to thelocal social and economic community. This is a good project which shows what can be accomplishedwithout over-designing. The jury applauds the designer’s handling of a modest budget and relativeimpact. Dollars are well spent on this low budget project opening up a wall which effectively extends thefootprint of the building. The client’s and architect’s visions for an overlooked neighborhood and garageare commendable and serve as an excellent example for others to follow. Decisions to prioritize the sideelevation and open interior to exterior generate additional usable space and strengthen connections to theurban realm.”

Jury Comments:

“Thanks to the architect for caring enough to take an otherwise ordinary, functional need and, with a simple gesture, create an attractive and appropriate response. This is a smart solution to a common problem facing congregations such as this. The lightweight solution complements the building nicelywithout mimicry and solves the accessibility problem beautifully within a relatively low budget. A compact and intelligent solution to the recurring challenge of integrating accessible entries to historic public buildings and places of worship. This project demonstrates how architects can solve ordinary issues that confront owners, and create elegant solutions that elevate the whole.”

Jury Comments:

“A nice departure from what you expect. This project will certainly catch the attention of anyone not watching the Cardinals! Its bold graphics and colors will bring out the gladiator in each of us. Clever solution to a typically dull interior environment. Reinterpretation of school symbols as an artistic expression was well conceived. In some ways an exercise in restraint which is able to give the feeling of fanatic excess is very successful in such a small space. A bold and well-resolved interior that is spirited without resorting to athletic kitsch. Excellent use of the basic elements of design - color, pattern, scale, finish and light.”

Jury Comments:

“The adaptive reuse of an existing big box building is commendable and sets a good example of the positive impact good design can have on a bad site. Wow – a complete transformation of an unused eyesore. The primary façade is well composed, proportioned and detailed, and effectively integrates original and new volumes. The jury appreciated the introduction of pedestrian and green spaces, lighting and planting. Good adaptation of abandoned space that can be found all over the U.S. Inspirational to have such vision and interest in seeing blight turned into such architectural vitality. Job well done!”

Jury Comments:

“Nice to see the efforts taken to respect this part of the historic fabric in this community. A good project which elegantly restores an important civic space within the community, it sets a good example for other communities dealing with similar issues within their public buildings. The jury applauds the client’s decision to renovate and restore the courtroom and the architect’s skill in detailing and working with contractors and artisans to refurbish and in some cases re-create historic elements. The before and after photographs are testament to the stewardship shown by this team. One can expect this circa 1912 courtroom to be appreciated for another century.”

Jury Comments:

“This interior renovation illustrates the strength that can be found in executing a simple design vocabulary across a reasonably large project to create a cohesive and collaborative work environment. The way it handles branding within an ordinary, uninteresting existing building is commendable. Limitedarchitectural moves worked well as a unifying element within the building, particularly at circulation zones. This interior design reclaims the interior of an uninspired exterior through intelligent space planning, consistency in furniture selection, and detailing of lighting, ceilings, stairs and doorways.”
