• PRESIDENT (Acting) Report There is no doubt Baseball SA has endured a tough year with a range of changes both forced and imposed, but we are firmly focused on the prospects of a bright, challenging and exciting future of Baseball in this State.

Towards the backend of the season it was with regret the Board accepted our then President, Shayne Bennett’s resignation due additional business commitments and in-part health. Shayne as many of us know, is all or nothing and his expressed passion for the game on every level certainly motivated all that were in contact with him. His unquestionable dedication has created pathways on many levels for the game to prosper both on and off the diamond. For that we thank Shayne for his commitment to the role of President over the past 3 years and wish him and his family well.

The Board also received notice from Bob Neiswander, Youth Director that he would not be re nominating. The Board and Baseball community would like to thank Bob for his 16 years of tireless work and passion towards growing youth baseball in SA. Bob has worked on every level promoting our game within schools, government and with other States. We wish you well in your Board retirement.

The integration with the Adelaide BITE, is still in transition and will be completed by the start of the 2014/15 season. Once in situ the infrastructure will allow for greater efficiencies and improved serviceability to all our members and affiliates. Diamond Sports precinct has finally received the last sign off for construction and we will see earth turn in late July with the indicative Baseball move in date 1st May 2015. This will mean Academy, State Teams and Charter Teams as well as Clubs will be able to utilize the facility leading up to tournaments and season 2015/16.

Sustainability is the word often used in the market today and that is very much the necessary requirement for SABL. A purpose built facility will allow for positive forecasting from a range of opportunities that will open for external revenue streams.

Some of the key areas the Board continues to focus on is implementation of a robust strategic plan, refine our governance documents, implement a communications policy, and undertake risk assessment evaluation.

Our ability to attract sponsorship and corporate support was a focus and resulted in a $22,226 increase on 2012/13 figures. CBA came on board as a major contributor and we appreciate their support. As the integration between SABL and BITE strengths so too will the opportunity to leverage on either for corporate support.

On behalf of the Board, I would like to once again like to acknowledge Phil Alexander as a BA Hall of Fame Inductee. Phil becomes SA 16th inductee and 14th player inductee.

Congratulations to all the winners of individual awards and premiership teams. A warm thank you to volunteers and officials which allow the game to be played and enjoyed by over 3500 weekly.

Finally thank you to the Staff and Board for working through 2013/2014 season and continuing to drive baseball in a positive direction.

• CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER Report

First and foremost Baseball SA was extremely honored to receive a second grant with the South Australian Government for our project at West Beach in conjunction with Softball SA. In February we were granted another $2 million. We thank all the efforts from the Office of Recreation and Sport, Paul Anderson, Adelaide Shores, the Hon Minister Bignall, SABL staff, Board and the newly formed Diamond Sports SA Board for their hard work in securing this funding.

Baseball SA had a rather rough start to the 2013/14 season with the departure of operational staff; implantation of new systems, re-branding all put us on the back foot before the season started. However we have come a long way over the past 12 months; it has been a year of change, one that will cement our future of baseball here in SA. I will not say it has been a perfect year for the league and its clubs, but I can certainly express that we are on the way to ensuring baseball remains strong in our state.

Operations:The ABF introduced a new sports management system to the business in July, incorporating the registering of members, websites right through to the competition management (scoring).

In July and August, Jessica (Administration) and I set out to visit all metro and regional clubs within SA to set up their online registering of players. This new system allowed for all payments to be taken online and the opportunity for clubs to manage their clubs fees. The learning of this new system was far too close to the season opening and certainly did put pressure on all clubs to understand and operate. Overall South Australia produced great results from the use of this new system and IMG continue to work closely with our state as a test to improve its ability/functions.

Not only was a new database introduced, but Baseball Australia re-branded their image and marketing materials through a new logo for all states. This also tied in with the launch of a new state website and club websites. Progress is still continuing in this area, with the completion of the competition management system before the season commences.

Human Resources:The league office has continued to re-structure and integrate with the Adelaide Bite over the past 12 months. During this time we said farewell to the following staff members who thank for their efforts and wish them well in their chosen paths;• Paul Chandler – went on to pursue other interests• Lorraine Dunn – Off to enjoy retirement• Warwick Marks – was instrumental in forming the SABA program has gone onto pursue other interests• Jake O’Conner – Returned to the USA to continue his schooling

We were pleased to welcome Matt Williams from NSW into our team as the new Baseball Coordinator in September. Matt comes from a wealth of baseball knowledge and skills having played for the Minnesota Twins for 6 years.

rew Samuelson joined our team at a similar time as our Performance Manager. Drew came to us from the Baseball Australia, with his knowledge of college ball in the US. Drew was instrumental in bring the Chuo team to Adelaide and the new look Bite Baseball Academy.

In April 2014 we fare welled our former President, Shayne Bennett who stepped down from his role. We thank Shayne for his endless time and support to the Baseball league and its community over the past 2 years and wish him well with his family and business. Shayne was instrumental in securing our funding with ORS for the new West Beach Diamond Sports Facility over the past few years. In light of this change, we are pleased to welcome Mark Snelgrove into the role of President and wish him well in this position. Mark has been a Marketing director on the board over the last couple of years as well as a large part of the Diamond Sports Project Board facilitating the build at West Beach.

At the end of April I also made the hard decision to move back into my original role as the Business Development Manager, departing my CEO position for Baseball SA. This was not a light decision but one that needed to occur for my young family and back to part time hours. My focus will now be on the financial/office side of the business. We look forward to the appointment of this role by mid-year.

Opportunities:We would like to thank the Commonwealth Bank Australia for coming on as a major sponsor with Baseball SA during the 2013/14 season. CBA supported the Women’s Championships, Little League Championships and the Bite Baseball Academy. We are proud to promote our partnership and look forward to a continuing this in 2014/15. Thank you to Coca Cola Amatil for renewing their partnership with Baseball SA for 2013/14 and their support around our Little League State Championships held at West Beach, this support is greatly appreciated. We were pleased to welcome aboard Paxton Vineyards who were apart of the CAPPS Awards Night and the Adelaide Bite luncheon. Thank you our continued partnerships with Greatrex, Computershare, James Thredgold Jewellers, Copyworld and Print Matters for the 2013/14 season. Please help us support these wonderful businesses that help grow baseball in SA.

Event Highlights:March presented as a very exciting time for Baseball in Australia with the 2014 Major League Baseball Season opening in Sydney hosting the Arizona Diamondbacks taking on the Los Angeles Dodgers. This was an amazing event, ran by MLB, Australian Baseball League and the Australian Baseball Federation and their staff. Baseball SA sent a small group of VIP’s to thank them for the recent support and partnerships with Baseball SA. It was an event enjoyed by all and we hope to see them back again in years to come. The SA Little League Competition was held at West Beach again this year, over the course of the three days bringing in large crowd to watch the North, South, Development Squads and Mount Gambier teams.

The teams were well represented by their coaches and support staff and had a great weekend. Baseball SA ran outside foods areas from BBQ, Ice creams, jumping castle, merchandise for sale, pitching tunnel and drinks van by Coca Cola. The results were very pleasing for our sport and a huge thank you goes out to all the volunteers that supported us throughout this event.

March saw the 2014 CAPP’s Awards Night held at a new venue, The Stamford Grand in Glenelg. We were pleased to have Wayne Phillips MC for the night who presented to over 430 attendees, including clubs and specials guests. The staff, volunteers did an amazing job of setting up the venue and supporting us during our night of nights, however overall the event did not meet our expectations with delivery and this will be rectified for 2014/15. Thank you to Dr Capps and his wife Helene for being our founder of this wonderful event, Brett Pickett for attending from the ABF and Peter Wermuth from the ABL. We were pleased you could join us on the night.

Congratulations to Andrew Davis for winning the 2013/14 CAPPS Awards Medal and our wonderful sponsors; James Thredgold Jewellers, Commonwealth Bank Australia, Copyworld, Computershare, Print Matters and Paxton Wines for your contributions.

The Junior Awards Night was once again hosted at the AMF Bowl in Cross Roads. Congratulations to all the award winners and thank you for attending this special night.

Finance:This year I am very pleased to show a great reduction in our running costs and overall a small profit shown for the year, after a large loss the previous year. Our focus on the past 12 months has been on the home for Baseball SA and securing the $4 million investment into this new redevelopment for Baseball. It’s now crucial for us to look at improving development, coaching programs, strengthening the league and our financial situation. Baseball SA has been fortunate enough to have another year of grants with ORS, however these will likely reduce significantly over the coming years, which certainly emphasizes the need for more programs. We were lucky to host the Chuo University team from Japan during the season, which provided pleasing financial results. Thank you to the Commonwealth Bank Australia for also supporting our business with a partnership. All these areas help us reduce costs to the game and clubs. Integration with the Adelaide Bite is another area of the budget which is helping reduce overheads, by sharing the expenses. The next 12 months we will focus on reducing the running costs further and increasing participation through wonderful programs and initiatives.

Acknowledgements:Baseball SA remains a strong team due to the efforts and support of the following people and we thank you for this;o The board of Baseball SA for your support and guidance in making this a stronger league.o The support and leadership from the Baseball Australia, Brett Pickett and his teamo Our staff of Baseball SA and Adelaide Bite; Nathan Davison and his team.

• GENERAL MANAGER - Adelaide BITE Report

Record 21 wins, 25 lossesFinish 5th place (one game out of 3rd, 2 games out of 2nd)

MVP Matt WilliamsPitching Award Richard OlsonHitting Award Ben Lodge

On field, as has occurred in the past two ABL seasons the playoff positions would not be determined until the very last pitch of the regular season. The Bite needed one win from eventual champions Perth Heat to force their way into the playoffs and challenge for the title. It wasn’t to be, losing all four games to the Heat (3 of which by one run and the final game by 2 runs after an 8th inning grand slam from Perth slugger Brandon Tripp) and missing out by a solitary game.

There were still many positives on field after a slow start with some momentum gained in the appointment of on field leader Brooke Knight and the leadership and direction provided by our group of young and old Aussie veterans.Congratulations must go to our players who represented our country against the visiting Major League teams in Sydney: Ben Lodge, Matt Williams, Richard Olson and Stef Welch. We are very pleased to announced the return of Brooke to manage the team for season 2014/15 and his attention to detail, knowledge, guidance and direction will leave no stone unturned in making our team ready to win the Championship.

Off field, the Bite fall into line with the national trend of reducing overheads while increasing revenue. Whilst operating in the red, both our Membership number and Total Attendance return exceeded budget for the first time. A big thank you to the ever present and supportive baseball public of Adelaide. The opportunity for baseball to truly stake its claim within the sporting landscape in Adelaide is now the task at hand.

A combination of government funding for a purpose built facility, a successful ABL franchise, both on and off-field, continued growth in participation numbers throughout the local baseball clubs, and renewed interest and enthusiasm by both MLB and the ABL all provide us with the opportunity to challenge the status quo both on and off the field.

Baseball and its supporters should stand firm with its head held high and be confident that the game we love is heading in the right direction and can compete on a global basis.

My door is open to anyone who would like to contribute to enhancing our standing and making the Adelaide Bite the best team in the land.

• PERFORMANCE DIRECTOR - Report

Building a Pathway for our baseball players is our most important Implementation we must undertake. The under pinning programs for the Junior Elite pathway is the BITE Baseball Academy then State Teams U16 & U 18 from there their goals should be College baseball & Adelaide BITE Team with a chance to be signed with MLB. The BITE Academy has come together due to the hard work done by Drew Samuelson & Matt Williams. The standard of Coaches working with the Academy Athletes all have a common thread with significant experience in.A) National Australia Teams/Programs B) American Inter College Programs C) American or Japanese Professional Programs. The Academy is broken up into 2 groups, Group 1 contains Players between 13 - 15 - 2nights a week at Gillespie SportsGroup 2 contains Players between 17-19. 2 nights a week at Gillespie Sports.Group 1 also train Saturday mornings at Glenelg Baseball Club.Group 2 have two teams playing in the Winter Ball Competition on Saturday’s.

At the National level the last year has been a mixed result.1/. U23 played at Southern Districts Baseball Club back in Sept 2013 and finished with the Bronze Medal. Well done to all involved. Thanks to Southern Districts Baseball Club for hosting this Series.2/. State U16 & U18 competed against our USA visitors in December at Woodville Baseball Club in the annual Goodwill series. This was again a great success and an important part of our preparation for the national championships in January. Special thanks to Bob Williams. To all the baseball families who billeted our USA players during the series, a big thank You for welcoming these players into your homes. Thank you to all the volunteers, scorers, umpires and officials who helped out during this Goodwill series. Again thanks to everyone at Woodville Baseball Club for hosting the series.U16 National Youth championships were played at Blacktown in Sydney, unfortunately the results weren’t the best and we finished 7th.U18 National youth Championships were played at Narrabundah ball park in Canberra again the results weren’t the best finishing 6th. U14 National Youth Championships were played at Glenelg baseball club here in Adelaide. Under hot & trying conditions they had good success during the tournament and played off or the Bronze Medal, but finished 4th.Baseball SA competed at the National Women’s Championship in April in NSW Country - Woodlands & Hammondville . The Women had a tough time, but did come home finishing 7th.

State Little League Championships were held at West Beach in April. With the top two Little League teams in the State Tournament going to the Nationals on the Gold Coast in June.Well done to Adelaide North & South for making the National’s. This will be a huge experience for the players. Finally the School Boys Team represented SA in Wollongong in NSW in May. Again this proved to be a tough outing for the Players , finishing 6th. As you can see a big commitment is required to allow all these teams to compete for SA. It was a great effort for all players, coaches & executive officers, scorers, & umpires. A Special thanks for the support & commitment of the parents. Congratulations to you all.

Coaching and Accreditation:With Coaching Accreditation we do have a job in selling the accreditation side of it to all Clubs. We must understand the process and the benefits of accreditation. From T-Ball through the junior grades and senior coaches, it is mandatory that all coaches at least complete the online assessment of the Australian Sports Commission (ASC) general principles duty of care. The Coaching Accreditation Scheme is intended as a “Quality Assurance” for the baseball public and the Australian Sports Commission. All coaches must have the minimum required level of understanding, across the areas of the game at that level, have a good knowledge of technique, duty of care & tactics.

In closing I would like to thank all the staff at Baseball SA, and the other Board members for their work throughout the year. I would like to thank the volunteers within the Baseball community across the State, for the intense & passionate commitment for developing the game of Baseball.

• BASEBALL CO-ORDINATOR - Report

The nature of our sport within the Australian sporting landscape has changed significantly within the past year, and as such the focus regarding development is constantly evolving. The underpinning programs associated with game development are constantly under review to ensure continual improvement in line with national and international models.

The major focus in development this season revolved around increasing junior exposure to quality coaching and teaching.

BITE Academy program was expanded and altered for the 2014 offseason, following on from the previously named SABA program. The aim to use the best available coaches, with pro, college or ABL experience to pass on the wealth of knowledge that each possess with further enhance the development of our young talented players. The view to move the BITE Academy to West Beach next season will allow for more on field work, with less time confined to indoor training.

Player access, especially with BITE players, was also a prominent feature this season. The Buddy Program conducted in conjunction with the BITE, allowed 47 children unprecedented access to players on game day. Children received instruction over 4 weeks from an assigned BITE player, giving the children an unforgettable experience. This program will likely be incorporated again this upcoming season in a similar format.

School clinics and programs, such as AASC and SAPSASA tournaments were held with the help of club coaches and volunteers. I would like to make special mention of the volunteers at Glenelg and Northern Districts Baseball Clubs for hosting SAPSASA games, taking time out of their schedules to host midweek games.

South Australia entered a team at the National Women’s Championship held in Sydney during Easter. The limited number of women players available for selection from SA allowed a number of friendship players from NSW to join the team, many for their first Womens Nationals. The group had one training session together the day before the commencement of the tournament, with an emphasis on playing the game hard. With some tough results early in the tournament, the girls played above and beyond expectations in the final game of the tournament, beating ACT to finish in 7th place and secured South Australia’s first ever win at a Women’s Tournament.

This year, development squads were introduced for the State Little League Championship. Both a South and North Development squad participating in this tournament gave 25 additional players the opportunity to play in tournament baseball. This is an area that may expand next season with additional charters and country integration.

Moving forward, a number of key areas will be a priority:

• Increased player development through camps, clinics and high performance programs• Clearer definition and implementation of player pathway structure from ABF down to grassroots level to ensure increased participation across all levels of the sport• Coaching accreditation and coach education• Helping country areas increase participation and retention of junior and senior players • Integration and utilisation of BITE players in development programs• BITE Academy expansion at West Beach

• CHAIRMAN BUASA - Report

I am proud to report that umpiring numbers were up again this year, both in terms of new umpires and total number of games officiated. Twenty-eight BUASA umpires covered 1027 appointments over the Baseball SA 2013/14 season. We welcome Craig Ottoway, Richard Webb, Paul Sowter, Lachlan Eichner, Lachlan Rees and Cooper Marsh into the fraternity.

Fortunately all of the new senior umpires picked things up quickly and all officiated in their first Division 1 game this season. Congratulations to Craig Ottoway along with Payne Sowter and Jack Tredrea who were appointed as the Plate Umpire to their first Division 1 game. Time after time, an umpires’ first Division 1 game provides a memory that they will never forget.

Our younger umpires, in particular Payne Sowter and Jack Tredrea, are the future of BUASA and I hope that they remain engaged with their Association and the sport continues to help them develop.

The country centres again welcomed us for their finals series. I would like to thank the Riverland and Mt Gambier Baseball Associations for their hospitality and to John Tretola, Ron Kennealy, Peter Ditrich, Jim Davidson, Paul Haynes, Kym Smith and Jack Tredrea for travelling to cover these games.

The year did not come without its difficulties and I would like to use this season as a learning experience as it provides us the ability to revaluate the roles that each stakeholder performs in managing the umpiring fraternity.

Neil Poulton, Andrew Bell, Mark Wilson, Paul Haynes and I again officiated the ABL games. Congratulations to Paul Haynes who this season plated his first ABL games.

In memory of the late Michael Peacock, our members vote for their favourite umpire that reminds us of the amazing person that Michael was. It was the closest voting so far this year which resulted in dual recognition of Peter Ditrich and Paul Haynes. Both are energetic umpires who clearly have a passion for what they do out on the field.

The Association recognised the long term assistance that Bruce Daley has provided by awarding him with Life Membership. Bruce has for years worked behind the scenes organising the equipment needed for us to run our practical training sessions and without him it would not have been possible.

I must thank our BUASA Committee of Kym Smith, John Tretola, Jim Davidson, Paul Haynes and Ian Reval as your support makes things run smoothly.

Finally, thank you all of you who give up your weekends to officiate in games throughout the season and to the partners who let us do it. We do it as we all enjoy having the best seat in the house for the greatest game in the world.

• AFFILIATIONS - Report

Associations affiliated with the South Australian Baseball League are:

• Baseball Umpires Association of South Australia (BUASA)• Brewers Masters Inc.• South Australian Country Baseball Associations (SACBA)• South Australian Scorers Association (SABSA)• South Australian Winter Baseball Association

BUASA:Director of Umpiring, Neil Poulton, along with suitably accredited umpires have done an exceptional job along with club umpires in ensuring the games of baseball are conducted. More Club umpires are an important and a cost effective method in running our game and you are all encouraged to accredit your players and volunteers. Please contact the office for details. Congratulations to Ian Reval and Paul Haynes in being selected on the SABL team of the year.

Brewers Masters Inc:This past year saw the Brewers compete in the World Masters games in Torino Italy and they triumphed by winning Gold for the 45+ division of the tournament. In November this year they are defending their Gold medal in the 50+ division at the Pan Pacs Masters on the Gold Coast. This year they supported juniors with the perpetual trophy for the Future Player of our State representatives and it was won by Jack O’Loughlin who played in the U14 championship.

SACBA:This association held another successful championship weekend last October at Glenelg and it is hoped that junior country teams can participate in this coming year’s event. This October event is a wonderful way to have country umpires and scorers become accredited over the three days. With the introduction of the charter format for Little League and Under 15 competitions I see an opportunity for country associations to embrace this format and compete in their own regional competition and form a charter team at the State level.

SABSA:We saw new scorers trained in the fundamentals of scoring a baseball game. Accreditation courses will be conducted in the pre-season and for information about SABSA see their website www.sabsa.baseball.com.auCongratulations to Steve Eads and Lorraine Dunn for being selected as the inaugural scorers for the SABL Team of the Year

South Australian Winter Baseball Association:Winter baseball participation continues to grow and President, Mathew Miles and his committee are to be congratulated. The participation numbers are up and sub groups are encouraged to be involved under the Winter Baseball Association to participate in the specific baseball insurance offered to all clubs and affiliated bodies by the South Australian Baseball League. Playing under this insurance scheme ensures you as a player are covered for the unexpected injury. The initiative of the Bridgewater Bulls in conducting a “Men’s Health” day whereby talks are presented by experts in men’s health areas and are run in conjunction with a day of baseball has been a perennial success for a number of years and I strongly encourage all baseballers to enquire about and attend this event.

• PERFORMANCE MANAGER - Report

The 2013-2014 season was exceptionally challenging as baseball in Australia, nationally, began its transition into a bold new era. Baseball Australia introduced a new national player pathway, a new national participation data management system, and new corporate identities for itself and all its state sport organisations (SSO). Moreover, the nationwide integration of baseball SSO and the Australian Baseball League (ABL) continued at a quickened pace.

The new national player pathway offers several clear and well-defined services for ballplayers to progress in recreational, competitive, and/or elite streams of player development. The elite stream establishes a hierarchy of underpinning programs that lead to U15 or U18 National Team participation: State Academy (BITE Baseball Academy) to State Team (SA BITE); State Team to National Academy (MLB Australian Academy Program); National Academy to National Team. Furthermore, the national transition to Little League standards appears to be a very positive progression that will allow our sport to be a part of the most popular and successful junior sport program on the planet. Little League’s charter team participation system is much more inclusive than the traditional state team participation system, and thus provides more children with the opportunity to challenge themselves in state, national, and international competition.

2015 will be the first year in which Australia offers charter-based U15 State & National Championships. Additionally, there is a possibility of charter-based U17 State & National Championship in 2016. As forecasted by Paul Chandler in the 2012-2013 Annual Report, Adelaide will almost certainly need to create a third charter for the upcoming 2014-2015 season. With this new junior program come new rules and regulations. It is imperative that all clubs – throughout South Australia, not just in Adelaide – comply with new Little League rules; particularly the age limits and minimum participation requirements.

The South Australia Baseball Academy (SABA) was reengineered, expanded, and rebranded as the BITE Baseball Academy. The majority of the new academy structures were courtesy of Baseball WA’s Diamond Academy, with other curriculum incorporated from Baseball NSW, Baseball Australia, and American high school and college programs. The BITE Baseball Academy will move to the new West Beach baseball complex in 2015, and, hopefully, it will also expand a satellite program into Mount Gambier. The academy coaches were hand-selected based on individual experiences with Australian National Teams, American collegiate competition, and/or professional competition in America and/or Japan. The goal of Baseball SA junior development programs is to instil on- and off-field skills that will allow each keen individual an opportunity to compete in an elite overseas program – either collegiate or professional. Accordingly, the BITE Baseball Academy has employed coaches that have participated in such programs to mentor our brightest young ballplayers in how to best achieve their baseball goals.

There were several notable firsts in the 2013-2014 campaign:

• South Australia entered its own Women’s team in the 2014 National Women’s • Championship, and that team beat ACT to finish in 7th place. • The goal is to enter both a SA BITE Women’s team a SA BITE U15 Girls’ team in the 2015 National Women’s

Championships.• Adelaide North earned its first trip to the 2014 National Little League Championship. • New Little League rules eliminated automatic qualifications for rural/country associations, and that rule change finally

allowed Adelaide North a well-deserved opportunity to represent South Australia. Both Adelaide South and Adelaide North assembled development squads that participated in several exhibition games at the 2014 South Australian Little League Championship. These young development squads received their first taste of representative team training and competition, and those experiences ought to benefit them as they strive to again represent Adelaide and South Australia in the near future.

• Chuo University flew to Adelaide from Tokyo to play a three-game international test series at Norwood Oval versus the Junior BITE development team. The Japanese contingent from Chuo University was most impressed with Adelaide’s beauty and friendliness.

Personally, this challenging year of transition and change was made easier by the efforts of several tireless individuals on the Board of Directors, Baseball SA offices, and the club community. I would be remiss to not thank a few key people that aided me throughout the campaign: Shayne Bennett, Mark Brougham, Lawrie Moore, and Matt Williams were constantly supportive throughout my introduction to South Australia and its baseball community.

• OPERATIONS DIRECTOR - Report

The introduction of the IMG programming system just before the start of the season by the ABF created quite a chal-lenging year. This resulted in some of the programming not being up to normal standards. I would like to thank the SA Baseball community for their understanding in this matter as it was not totally in Baseball SA control. In saying that we are moving forward and leaving nothing to chance for the upcoming 2014/2015 season. We have released the Div 1 draft draw for all clubs to peruse. We have also been in contact with ABF to try and solve all the issues the new programming system created this year.

The top six, bottom seven 30 game Division I comp will enter its 3rd year this season. This has created a more bal-anced competition with the top six not being decided until the last round of each season since its implementation two years ago.

I would like to thank all the operations delegates who gave up their time for the operations meetings throughout the year. As I well know we are all volunteers but constructive input is always appreciated when reviewing the rules and playing conditions each year. This can only make our great game a better one.

My thanks also to Kevin Jennings and Paul Begg for their time on the Tribunal. It was good to see not many were required this year.

In closing, it would be amiss of me not to thank Drew Samuelson, who in his short time at Baseball SA, shared some interesting new ideas. Some of which we may be able to implement in the future. I wish him the best in his new endeavours.

• 2014 HALL OF FAME INDUCTEE - Phil Alexander

DOB: 7/10/1949 From: SA Nomination category: Playing / 1968 – 1988

STATE BASEBALL: Phil played for South Australia 12 times in the Claxton Shield:

1967 – Perth;1968 – Brisbane;1970 – Sydney;1971 – Adelaide;1972 – Brisbane;1973 – Perth;1974 – Melbourne;1976 – Adelaide;1979 – Melbourne1981 – Adelaide;1982 – Sydney;1983 – Perth.

He was also selected to play for South Australia in the Chrysler Cup series in 1967/68. When SA celebrated the 75th anniversary of the Claxton Shield, Phil was selected as a utility player in the state’s all-star team.

One unique aspect of Phil’s playing Claxton Shield, is he is the only South Australian who played in every position on the diamond, as well as being designated hitter (has anyone achieved this for any other state?). Phil was also the assistant coach of the SA Claxton Shield team in 1986 and 1987. Besides his work as a player and coach in state teams, Phil was also heavily involved in promoting baseball through the media.Radio - He had a weekly spot on the Ken Cunningham sports program (radio 5DN and later 5AA) from the late 1970s to the early 1990s, reporting on all aspects of the game in Adelaide.Newspaper - He also wrote a weekly baseball report for the newspaper (The News) in the early 1980s.Television - Was a co-host and commentator for two seasons on TV for the Clipsal Cup night baseball competition.

NATIONAL BASEBALLBesides his impact as a player at national level, Phil was a member of the coaches association, and ran coaching clinics for SABL youth players (and underage state teams) and was involved in SASI and ABF coaching programs during his career.Through his motivation and ideals as a communicator, a generation of young and upcoming players had a chance to play senior baseball in South Australia.

Phil was the first head coach of the Adelaide Giants in the first Australian Baseball League, for three seasons, from 1989-1992. He was head coach of the ABL all-stars in 1990/91. He was also an assistant coach to Tony Harris for two seasons, from 1993-1995.

INTERNATIONALPhil played centre field for Australia in 1970 against Japan, in a 10 test series in Japan, where he averaged .467 with the bat. He also represented Australia in the 1971 South East Asian Series played in Korea, against Korea, Japan and Philippines.

AWARDS / TROPHIES / RECOGNITION RECEIVED BY NOMINEE - In 1982 Phil won the prestigious Capps Medal, awarded to the state’s premier player in division one, a year where he also was made a life member of Glenelg Baseball Club. When he played in the Night Baseball League, Phil also won the Shipway Medal as the best player in that competition in 1967/68, also scooping the pool with two newspaper “all-rounder/best player” awards for that season. Earlier this year (2013), Phil was recognised for his outstanding contribution to baseball in South Australia with South Australian Baseball League Life Membership.

• PRESIDENT WINTERBALL LEAGUE - Report

SA Winter Baseball Association2014 Season

It has been my pleasure to act as the President of the SA Winter Baseball Association since 2008- I came into the role after request was made to me by Hugh Franke as there was a vacancy during the 2008 season. I have enjoyed being involved in the administration of the competition after playing in it for over 20 years. The season was well conducted and participated by teams with fair and sportsmanlike conduct. I would like to thank the two hundred odd people for participating and the team organisers and coaches that make this competition possible. I would also like to thank the umpires who make time to officiate these games, an often thankless task that is essential. Only one tribunal session was held and the two teams involved have been given severe reprimands over their unsportsmanlike behaviour. However apart from this one incident the season did progress it a very sportsmanlike manner all season and is testament to teams playing in this competition.I’d also like to congratulate the following teams for their grand final victories. Division Winners:2013 Hugh Franke Premier Division- Bears (defeated Varsity 6-0)2013 Division 2 North Jim Beare League - Premiers –Rebels Gold (defeated MAD (8-5)2013 Division 2 A Central Mick Beech League - Premiers – Tigers (defeated Woodville 10-9) 2013 Division 2 B Central Mick Beech League – Premiers- Varsity Rough Riders (defeated Jackhammers 18-5)2013 Division 2 South Martin Foster League - Premiers – Bridgewater Bulls (defeated Socia-Bulls 15-6)The following new initiatives were implemented for 2013 included; Upgrade of the website to allow scores to be submitted online. Introduction of Grand Final MVP medals to all divisions (after introducing to the Hugh Franke Premier Division two years ago)Its also very pleasing to see an increase in teams for 2013 and early indicators are that there will be another increase in teams for 2014 which is a great sign for the competition and proof that we are heading in the right direction.

I would like to also thank the Winter Baseball Committee for their time in managing and administering this competi-tion, especially Peter McGeary the Vice President, Ryan Barmby the Secretary (who does an incredible amount of work) and Trevor Dunn the Treasurer. Thanks also to Christopher Shaw, Martin Foster, Ditmar Guehrer, Jim Beare and Jamie Coombs. This committee has great representation from a number of clubs across the spectrum of the competition. Thankyou also to you the clubs who organise and players, umpires and grounds every week – you are the competition and I look forward to working with you all in the future.

• YOUTH DIRECTOR - Report

This was our second season of the change to Odd Year Youth Divisions and our team nominations have grown again in overall numbers. With our younger players playing on diamonds to fit their physical and mental abilities, it has increased their fun and enjoyment – and our numbers.

Participation is the name of the game to ensure our continued funding and sponsorship for our minor sport. Ours is not a sport focused on the elite, but on those who simply enjoy playing our sport; the cream will always rise to the top.

Having said that, we must try to establish games where All Star type teams of our better players can play against each other, fortnightly perhaps, during the regular season to increase their game skills. With our home ground at Adelaide Shores available in the future, we may easily do this, but our current limited facilities make this hard to accomplish.

We had to shorten this season by one fixture to 17 due to the American Major League Baseball’s Opening Day game being played in Sydney at the end of March. Two regionalised twilight games were scheduled for all (except for the Little League Minors) to add to our 15 available Sundays. Once again, the Heat Rule cancelled a couple fixtures along the way. We scheduled our U19 games on Saturday’s to make it more attractive to players this season, but consensus at the end of the season will see them moved back to Sundays next season. They were also given Schoolies Weekend off and an extra twilight game was programmed in its place, but this will not go ahead next season either.

It was a tough year getting the fixtures right due to the new software, IMG, put upon us by the ABF. With new staff in the office too, this didn’t make it any easier, but thanks for your cooperation and understanding. It was gruelling…

Our Youth Medal Night was held at the AMF Bowl for another successful night of showcasing our Youth players who polled well in their divisions and for ten pin bowling fun at the end of the night. Our Baseball SA staff once again did a superb job of putting this together for the enjoyment of all.

We were able to field a Schoolboys team for the National Championships held in May this year in NSW. We still need more encouragement from the schools to promote this tournament to give us more exposure for tryouts. Thanks to our coaching staff for their hard work and efforts to put this team on the field so we were able to participate in the National tournament. Our Little League State Championships were also held in May at Adelaide Shores for another well run tournament. Charter teams from Adelaide North, South and Mount Gambier competed for a chance to go to the Gold Coast for the Nationals in June. This year, Little League International changed the rules for advancement to the Nationals. Therefore, the top two teams in our State tournament went to the Gold Coast: Adelaide North and Adelaide South. Mt. Gambier missed out due to regional teams now in the State playoff mix.

Thanks to all the Little League coaches and their staff for their hard work and efforts throughout the process to bring their teams to the State playoffs and to the Nationals. Also thanks to the parents, volunteers and the players to make this a fun time for all. Kudos go to our Baseball SA staff for organising the Little League State Championships and to our fellow Directors and volunteers assisting them on the day to ensure another successful and fun filled tournament. A special thanks to Jim Manning for providing the audio system and his expert announcing of the play by play calls for all games. It really made for a professional event.

Our Youth Delegate Meetings were, again, well attended this season. The Clubs continued support and input are invaluable to the development to youth baseball in our state. They provide a valuable resource to the League and their feedback is always appreciated. Thanks to all for taking the time to attend our four meetings held throughout the season. We must continue to embrace T-Ball in all our Clubs and schools. It is the first and most important step in providing the introduction of our sport and continues to be an SABL priority. While T-Ball emphasises having fun while learning our game, we hope the fun will carry them on to play baseball and build our numbers of participation. While the T-Ball outcome is very rewarding, it is always hard work by too few to make it happen. So, if help is needed, put your hand up and get involved! It is our future.

This is my last year on the Board looking after Youth baseball for the past 16 years on the field and around the Board table. It’s been an enjoyable and rewarding experience. I hope you enjoyed it too.

• HERITAGE COMMITTEE - Report

The year in review has been a busy one for our Committee with progress being made in several areas. Highlights are as follows.

Congratulations to Phil Alexander on his being inducted into Baseball Australia’s Hall Of Fame.We are currently working on more submissions in this area.

Sport SA have invited us to participate in Hall of Fame Museum which is planned to be erected in North Terrace as a permanent fixture, and parts which may be sent to designated Country centres as a temporary display. The first stage will be used to honour the Inaugural inductees which includes Baseballs Ron Sharpe, and we are in the process of gathering the necessary material for our display.

The Heritage Committee have made submissions to Baseball SA for Life Membership of worthy recipients which, if successful, will be Awarded at the AGM in July.

We have requested to Baseball SA that our future Annual Reports should include the complete list of all past winners of the Capps Medal and the Club that they represented in that Year. We are of the opinion that this valuable historical information should be recorded as part of our History. The Award was first presented in 1936 and to celebrate the 80th anniversary we are compiling a special presentation to be delivered at the 2016 Annual Dinner.

Regarding our proposed Web Site, the mammoth collection of data is being prepared and we are still aiming for the launch to be on October 1st. this year.

In conjunction with Baseball SA we are designing a Standard Report Form which all Clubs and Affiliated Bodies will use to ensure that Baseball SA receives all relevant information throughout the League to ensure the standard is maintained for both Reporting and Statistical purposes.

We invited all Clubs to attend a Meeting where we outlined our plans to preserve our History and to offer our assistance in helping Clubs to obtain Historical information. Those who attended found the Meeting to be of interest and we offer our assistance to all Clubs in this regard.

During the year we were delighted to welcome Doug White to our Committee. Doug has a special interest in the History of Baseball in SA and is well known for producing a book on the first 60 years of the Adelaide Baseball Club. He joins Ron Chandler, Gordon Penhall, Robert Laidlaw, Phil Burgess and myself on the Heritage Committee which is committed to preserve the History of Baseball in South Australia. It is a privilege to work with such dedicated Baseball people with the motto “If we don’t know our history - how can we measure our progress?”

• SABSA - Report

The South Australian Baseball Scorers Association (SABSA) promotes the official role held by a baseball scorer by encouraging, educating and representing scorers associated with Baseball South Australia (BSA). We strive to ensure uniform interpretation of the Australian Baseball Rules through participation in a national accreditation program established by the Council of Australian Baseball Scorers (CABS).

SABSA continues to update teaching strategies and learning resource materials for scorers. Members are informed of rule variations and changes and accepted interpretations at our meetings, through email and via the SABSA website: www.sabsa.baseball.com.au. Nationally accredited scorers are required to maintain a log book of their scoring activities. In order for Level 3 scorers to maintain their accreditation, we require an annual revision session based upon information gathered through monitoring of current senior scoring practices and exams; this session also encourages participation of Division 1 scorers.

SABSA conducted scoring clinics for Levels 1, 2 and 3. Thanks to the efforts of experienced scorers including Steve Eads, Lorraine Dunn and Enza Henty we now have eleven additional nationally accredited Level 2 scorers. This will assist our local clubs in meeting the Baseball SA requirement of ensuring Division 1 games have a Nationally Accredited Level 2 scorer officiating. In addition to the accreditation levels there were several “Introduction to scoring” clinics held at various clubs at the beginning of the season.

As in previous years there have been many scoring opportunities for SABSA members outside of their usual club responsibilities. During the October long weekend the Country Carnival held at the Glenelg Baseball Club and the Goodwill Series held in December at the Woodville Baseball Club were two such opportunities that offered all accredited scorers an opportunity, including newly accredited scorers to gain experience in a relaxed and friendly environment. Representing SABSA at the National Under 23 Championship at Southern Districts, September 2013 were, Lorraine Dunn as Coordinator, supported by Steve Eads, Carol Burns, Sue Jennings and Enza Henty. At the 2013-14 National Youth Championships, in the extreme heat at Glenelg were the Under 14 youth and Steve Eads, Coordinator, Lorraine Dunn, Carol Burns, Pauline Sharp, Michael Phillips, Janet Young, Marie Mortimer, Enza Henty and Carolyn Smith, whilst Enza Henty also participated in the Under 16 youth in Sydney. We thank the Southern District and Glenelg Baseball Clubs for their support whilst we are managing the rosters and reports that are required at these events. Glenelg was also an opportunity to assist Baseball Australia by way of supplying all electronic equipment and TABS software.

With the MLB Opening series in Sydney an opportunity to meet the MLB Scorer / Datacaster was organised for interested scorers and several SABSA members were pleased to be able sit and discuss how it is done at MLB games.

For season 2013-14, SABSA extended live IT scoring to capture as many BSA Division 1 games as could be managed. This was a challenging proposition requiring considerable commitment from SABSA scorers, all of whom are volunteers and only a limited number of these scorers are able to facilitate IT; the availability of internet access was also an issue. Most games of the final series were captured live or results posted soon after the match.

It was pleasing to receive confirmation by Baseball Australia that the TABS software package will continue to be utilised at Youth Nationals, this is also the program utilised for the live games and the recording of Division One statistics; thank you Lorraine Dunn, Steve Eads, Carol Burns and Pauline Sharp who were entering games live.

A highlight for SABSA was the inclusion of scorers in the SA Team of the Year announced at the 2013/14 CAPPS Medal; the inaugural scorers selected for their knowledge and input to the game during 2013/14 season were Steve Eads and Lorraine Dunn. Congratulations to both of you! Thank you Mark Snelgrove for ensuring this did occur.

• SABSA - Report (cont)

SABSA again has representation on the CABS Technical Commission with Steve Eads and CABS National Coordinator, Lorraine Dunn joining representatives from Queensland and Victoria. The CABS ‘Train the Trainer Workshop’ was held August 2013 in Melbourne with Enza Henty and Carol Burns participating; this is an ideal opportunity for Level 3 (or higher) accredited scorers to network and discuss ruling updates and the challenges each state faces in managing clinics and membership.

One of our challenges remains the need to develop sufficient numbers of higher accredited scorers to fulfil increasing demands from the Baseball SA and Baseball Australia as well as providing scorers for the national professional competition of the Australian Baseball League (ABL).

This was particularly so during the National Youth Tournament when scorers accredited in both the MLB Datacaster program (Bite games) and the TABS (Youth and Baseball SA) were required as schedules clashed. To utilise either of these programs the scorer inputting data must have appropriate accreditation as a baseball scorer to ensure consistency of rule interpretation.

As previously reported there continues to be a challenge is assisting in the development of scorers in the regional areas of South Australia. We have connections with baseball in the Riverland, Eyre Peninsula, Mt Gambier, Murray Bridge and elsewhere, but lack resources and people to extend our work.

The baseball community during 2013/14 season experienced some challenges with the introduction of a new software package at the commencement of the season and this combined with poor communication and understanding of season procedures from Baseball SA administration was at times frustrating; it is unfortunate the software package could not support the SMS of results which assist with instant score and ladder updates and the inability to produce the official result sheet with correctly recorded registered names. Links to SABSA website via the Baseball SA website still do not work after repeated requests.

At our recent AGM, Life Membership of SABSA was awarded to Steve Eads for his commitment over 17 years and, for the most part when his son was no longer playing! Steve has achieved the highest accreditation at a national level with Level 4 and Level 4 IT. Steve is also the SABSA webmaster, preparing web links for live scoring and often imparts his knowledge of the baseball scoring rules at clinics. Congratulations Steve!

Whilst conveying thanks I would like to mention the support of Baseball SA board member, Kevin Shepherdson in following through with Baseball SA direction for all Division 1 clubs to have a Level 2 (or higher) accredited scorer. We appreciate your support Kevin.

Sincere thanks to all of the scorers and their supporters who have contributed their time and skills to promoting baseball in South Australia.

• U18 SA BITE - Report

1988.We may have come close, but as far as a state program goes we have failed to deliver a U18 National Championship since then. All other major states have throughout the last two and a half decades been able to deliver at least 3 Championships for their states (not counting ACT).

South Australia has produced some amazing baseball talent, many playing professional baseball, 29 I can think of; however why is it as a state we fall far too short?

Something could be said for the fact we had only 30 athletes attend try outs or even register interest in participating at the U18 championships, doesn’t make for a competitive environment when two thirds are going to be selected. What seems to be more alarming is the fact that even scouting the country championships, U17 & U19 BSA games and even Div 1 & 2 games, no more talent was able to be discovered. I take nothing away from the 20 boys who made the trip and commend them for their efforts. I guess what is indeed needed is some education at the lower level, that simply relying on you club training nights to get your work in is simply not enough. Most players in the other states are stronger, faster, mentally more in tune with the game, simply fiercer competitors. Their depth is evident and although we match it sometimes we are not able to sustain such competition.

There were some outstanding performances from the boys and certainly some who day in day out did all they could to support the team. There were some excellent individual efforts and a few who really epitomise the team spirit you want as a coach. Some simply were not up to the standard and others seemingly thought it was about them and not their other 19 team mates. A few need to identify why they play the game and what it means to them. I could cotton wool it, but we finished 6th, so I will leave it at that.

To finish, I want to thank my coaching staff, Josh Frick, Wes Patterson, those able assistants prior to the championship in Lawrie Moore, Matt Williams and Drew Samuelson and my EO who with or without a hat on was amazing...Blake Armstrong.

Thank you to Baseball SA for the opportunity and support and to the parents for their commitment and support to their boys and the team. Their support for the team was noted in Canberra and appreciated.

I think we need to be blunt and honest about the state of Baseball in SA and highlight somewhere something has gone wrong. Let’s fix the problem and hope in years to come with some good old fashioned hard work we can bring home a National Championship at some level.

• U16 SA BITE - Report

The National Championships did not get off to a good start for the team. Despite playing good baseball for the most part of our first 3 games, with tough match ups against perennial powerhouse teams Victoria Blue and Western Australia, and an upset loss to the ACT, we found ourselves going into Day 3 with a 0-3 record.

Our next game put us up against Queensland, one of the teams we would be fighting for one of the spots in the top four for a chance to play off for the championship. Behind some good pitching from Dylan Ridding and Alec Steff, and hitting from the entire line-up, we were able to get our first win on the board with a 12-8 result. Our second game that day placed us against New South Wales, another favourite for the Championship. Again, the boys played well and took it right up to New South Wales, led by Brodie Macbeth on the mound, who left the game with the scores level. Unfortunately, New South Wales proved too strong in the late innings and ended up winners 7-2.

The final two days of the first round had us with our backs against the wall, with a 1-4 record and two tough games against Country New South Wales and Victoria White, with no room for error in our attempt to make the top four. First, we played Country New South Wales on Diamond 1 at Blacktown, which is the field where the ABL games are played. The boys played a fantastic game, and fought back from an early deficit to run out winners 8-6. The stars of the day were Brayden Londema and Dylan Ridding, each with 3 RBI’s, Declan Steel and Alex Smith on the mound, who shut down and good offensive team, and the team defence which the boys provided, not making an error and turning some double plays to kill Country’s rallies.

The final day of Round 1 had us against Victoria White. After a slow start to the game, the boys certainly came out swinging and easily came out winners 18-8, with everybody playing well. Unfortunately, our 3-4 record was not good enough to get us into the top pool and keep our Championship hopes alive, but the boys had proved throughout the first round that they were good enough to match it with any team in the tournament, but we were not able to keep that high standard for long enough to sneak into the top four.

Round 2 saw us have to play Victoria White, Queensland and ACT for a second time. We were again able to take care of Victoria White, winning 13-6, again behind our offence led by Jack Partington, Mitchell Lightbody and Jordan McArdle. However, the next day things went from bad to worse, as we fell to both Queensland and the ACT, as we could not stop either team from scoring big innings against us, dropping us to the playoff for 7th. We again played Victoria White, and this game was a lot closer than our past meetings. After falling behind early, the boys showed great pride in coming back and scoring the winning run in the bottom of the 6th inning, with Jesse Frazer clutching up and driving in the winning run. 7th place was certainly not where this team wanted to finish, and I still believe that the team was better than a 7th place team, but the nature of tournament baseball is such that one small thing goes against you or you drop a game that you shouldn’t, and it can cost you a chance at a National Championship.

I need to thank my staff of Zac Stokes, Paul Mildren and my EO David Lightbody. Without the jobs that these three men did my job would have been impossible and I cannot thank them enough for your commitment and the time that they gave up.

Zac was with me at every training from Day 1 and worked tirelessly with the kids to not only make them better players, but to also teach them about the skills and mind set needed to be successful in the game. Paul came on late after we had to find a replacement pitching coach, and did a fantastic job of passing on his knowledge of every facet of the game from his many years in professional baseball. David is the King of EO’s and makes my job so much easier by taking care of every single thing you can think of off the field, from paperwork, communicating with the parents, and spending hours on his hands and knees spraying, scrubbing and washing the players uniforms every night to be ready to go the next day, often only getting a few hours sleep. I cannot thank David enough for everything he did for this program. Of course my biggest thanks need to go out to the players and their parents. Without their dedication and efforts, having a state team is not possible.

Finally, congratulations to our award winners, Brayden Edwards, who won the Most Improved for the team, and to Jack Partington, who was named the Most Valuable Player.

• U14 SA BITE - Report

Our 2014 campaign started with 70 players attending tryouts. It was fantastic to have so many player enthusiastic to tryout but made for difficult tryout sessions with limited help. I thank Drew Samuelson and Matt Williams for their assistance during the tryouts. Once final selections had been completed the coaching staff were quietly confident we had a good mix of experience and talent to improve on the previous years standing.

Once the tournament got underway the team confirmed the confidence held by the coaches to post a 7-2 record through the minor rounds. Game results for the minor rounds were as follows:-NT 25-1 | NSW 12-6 | Vic Blue 7-19 | Vic White 13-1 | ACT 13-0 | QLD 8-0 | NSW Country 7-6 | WA Black 10-3WA Red 8-9

There were many highlights and individual standout performances throughout these games. Opening the tournament with a 25 run performance was a great confidence booster regardless of the opposition. Game 3 saw the boys push Victoria’s number 1 team with a 7-8 score line after 2 innings forcing the Vics to dig into their pitching depths to shut our bats down. The standard of play over the next 3 games demonstrated talent SA holds at this level of youth baseball by posting 34 runs to 1. Day 5 against NSW Country reminded the boys that they need to reset their focus for each game. Being 0-2 down after 6 innings, 2 runs in the 7th put the game into extra innings. NSW punched out another two but the boys struck back with 3 to win 5-4 in 8 innings. Josh Whelan had a great game by knocking in both the tying and winning runs.

Although the first 5 days had been played in over 40C temperatures, tournament organisers decided to cancel play on day 6 due to a forecast of 45C. Day 6’s minor round games were to be transferred to Friday resulting in the cancellation of the semi finals round, with the main finals being based on final standings eg 1v2, 3v4, etc. As we envisaged finishing in 3rd place this basically robbed us of the opportunity to throw everything plus the kitchen sink at the 2v3 semi-final game to get into the gold medal game. Although we argued with tournament organisers (and anyone else who would listen) to complete the top 4 semi-finals by playing double headers on the final day, our protests fell on deaf ears.

However the baseball gods threw us a second chance in the form of QLD stepping up to beat Vic Blue on Friday morning. This meant we had the opportunity to throw everything at WA Red to take top spoton the ladder and a crack at gold. Unfortunately giving WA 6 runs in the 2nd innings was not the way to start such an important game. The boys fought back well to score 7 runs over the next three innings, but it was not to be eventually going down 8-9. This left the team in 3rd place to face NSW for a chance at a bronze medal. The boys entered the game with the right attitude, but I believe the heat and intensity the boys had played all week had taken its toll. Nothing was going right for the boys but they battled hard to the end with NSW eventually taking the bronze 5-2. The whole team had had such a great tournament and it was such a shame to see them finish without a medal of any colour that they so thoroughly deserved.

I can’t thank my coaching staff enough for their assistance throughout tryouts, training and the tournament. The knowledge, experience and dedication toward youth baseball by Andrew Scott, Nathan Brougham and Jeff Kevan was invaluable to me and the team. We had two EO’s this year starting with Lee Martin who got the ball rolling with his usual excellent efficiency, then Jim Wilton took over just before the start of the tournament and continued on the good work. It’s probably the busiest job on the team and I thank both men for their efforts.

I’d like to congratulate two players for their outstanding tournaments. Firstly to Jack O’Loughlin who used the previous year’s experience to take his game to the next level and was rewarded with the tournament MVP award as well as the SA State Player of the year. Secondly to Nick George. We knew what we expected from Nick but had not seen his full ability during training’s, but once the tournament started Nicks game went from strength to strength and was deservedly recognised with our Most Improved player award for the team.

I hope that all players enjoyed their experience and took away some valuable lessons from playing at this level. I wish them all the best in the baseball future.

• 2013/14 GRAND FINAL - Kensington BC vs Goodwood BC

Kensington Cardinals regained the mantle of premiers of division one baseball, with a two-game sweep of Goodwood Indians at Erindale in the Baseball SA 2013/14 grand final series, winning game one 8-4 followed by a 9-4 win in the second contest.

Saturday’s game featured a 13 strikeout performance by Cardinal hurler Chris Salamida and two-run home runs from Tom Brice early and Nick Talbot late, to pave the way for Kensington’s 8-4 victory.Goodwood scored an unearned run in the first inning on Chris Adamson’s sacrifice fly, with Brice’s third frame shot giving the Cardinals the lead. With Indian pitcher Matt Wickswat losing control in the fifth inning – with five walks – Kensington scored four runs to lay the foundation of its win. A single run in the sixth dig on Brendan Pett’s home run and a pair of runs in the eighth frame gave some hope to the Indians’ winning chances, but Talbot quelled the uprising with his fence-buster in the bottom of the eighth.Game two saw Goodwood twice take leads that on both occasions were wiped out.The Indians went 1-0 up on Chris Adamson’s sacrifice fly in the first inning, with big doubles from Brice and Scott Gladstone fueling a three-run second frame by the Cardinals for a 3-1 advantage. On the back of two walks, a pair of errors and a wild pitch, the Indians re-took the lead 4-3 with a three-run push in the third dig. But again Kensington fought back hard, with a six-run fourth inning, Gladstone belting a two-run double, Bas Nooij connecting for a two-run home run, while Brice picked up two hits in the frame. Veteran Goodwood pitcher Darren Fidge did not walk a batter but hit four Cardinals hitters, which led to him not seeing out the fourth dig. Talbot pitched the winning game for Kensington, throwing nine innings for four hits, four walks and eight strikeouts. It was the Cards fourth flag in five seasons and fifth this millennium. • Little League Adelaide North - Report

Adelaide North participated in the National Championship, for the first time after finishing second, behind Adelaide South in the SA Championship. Our strategy for the SA Tournament was to qualify for the Nationals, by beating Mount Gambier in two games, which to Mount Gambier’s credit, provided stiff opposition in the final deciding game. It would have been tough for Mount Gambier to travel to Adelaide for two days of tournament play and I hope in the future the SA Tournament is held over three days, as per previous years.

The Adelaide North started with trials in December and has continued through to June, which has been a long programme, but is very important for the development of juniors in the North. Our focus since selecting the Development and Charter Squad, was to continue to teach physical mechanics and start to introduce structured game strategies for offense and defence. Craig Powell and Steve Yeatman were selected to work as assistant coaches and focus on hitting and pitching mechanics respectively. Craig and Steve both contributed many hours of exhausting time and effort to mould and teach the entire group of 28 players, in the development and charter squads. Their work with these players are a big reason why the players have improved and developed at an extremely fast rate, which is what is required for the North to be competitive, due to the infancy of a lot of junior clubs in the North zone. Mark Bull who was eventually appointed as the Charter Teams EO, was also with the group from the trials and helped coach and mentor the players, during the programme. The North team has been blessed with having Mark in this duo role and the amount of work Mark has contributed as EO, has been incredible, especially since Mark had to learn the procedures and format as we progressed to the National Tournament, by the input of Burke Weber and the ABF.

Adelaide North won two games at the National Championship, with the highlight winning against Brisbane Metro, who finished 6th overall and we damaged their chances of a top four finish, with this loss. We expected the standard to be tough, without regional qualifiers and the difference between the top four and bottom four is about 2 years of development. Having said that, if we were able to consistently play at the level, which we displayed against Brisbane Metro, we could have moved further up the ladder. The main difference is that the top teams are playing more games at a high level, consistently and frequently. Drastic changes to the format of district Little League in SA needs to happen, to allow SA teams to be competitive on the National Stage.

The introduction of the Development Team was undoubtedly a major success for baseball in SA and should serve to help to improve the standard of player skills, if continued to be supported by future Little League coaches, in this format. Darren White and Dominic Hodges were appointed as the North Development Head Coaches and both were major contributors to the whole North programme. David O’Brien and Darren Heintze-Unger and a group of other parents contributed there time to help run training and contribute at the SA Tournament. Adelaide North was very fortunate to have such an enthusiastic group of parents support our goals for the North, during the last 6 months.

One of the great things of being involved in SA baseball over a long period of time is the ability to ask past players and coaches for help and to continue to contribute to baseball in South Australia, as we all have a vested interest in developing our future stars for the local and international leagues. I would personally like to acknowledge and thank the following people for their help, support and contribution to the Adelaide North.

Ryan Murphy, Michael Dunn, Kym Ashworth, Darren Roberts, Mark Hutton, Leigh Norman, Ian Reval and Tony Harris.

Special thanks go to the following two individuals.Peter Gee, supported the North with access to the fantastic facilities that Peter has worked hard to assemble at Seaton High and allowing the North access to his Bass Academy instructors, as a group and independently for individual players to learn and improve. Peter has been a great supporter of Little League and the North owe Peter a debt of gratitude for this. I would like to publically thank Peter for his help personally and support for myself, as well.

Burke Weber, due to me personally asking for Burkes help as a friend of many years, contributed many hours of his time to help the players and myself as a coach, which I thank him for. I have learnt a lot from him generally and specifically as a Little League coach, which is technically laden with many different rules, when compared to normal Junior and Senior baseball. All future Little League coaches can learn a lot from Burkes past success and experiences in this age group and hopefully Baseball SA will embrace his knowledge and willingness to help all future Little League programmes. The last six months has been tough and challenging for all coaches, players and parents, but the outcome for Adelaide North has been a very tight and focussed Charter Team and hopefully a strong North team next year, filled with the great talent in our Development Team.

• Little League Adelaide South - Report

Assistant Coach - Alex DitrichPitching Coach - Jeff Kevan EO / Asst Coach - Andrew Sperling

The program got off to a late start this year but we found our feet soon enough. We set out to build a team around the philosophy of Pitching, Defence, and Timely Hitting. We, as a coaching staff recognised that defence would play at a premium in this age group, second only to a pitcher’s ability to repeat his delivery and throw strikes consistently. We preached from day one that if we take of the basics, the game will take care of you. I would like to thank everyone who tried out for the program, this age level is critical to future of our sport. Well done to all the boys selected for the Development Squad, the progress everyone made was evident in the success of your tournament.

Adelaide South went on to win the State Championship, with a 3-0 Win/Loss record. We managed to score 37 runs while only allowing 6 runs (4ER) over the weekend. The program to date has not been without a few hurdles along the way, and as a first time manager at this level it has not been easy. However a great bond has formed with this team over a relatively short time and we are now on the up and up as we turn our sights to the National Championships in early June. Sadly Bob wont be travelling with us to Queensland, but I’d like to acknowledge the work he has put in up to this point, and thank you.

Heading into Nationals we thought our strengths were pitching and defence. Defensively we played to our expectations, with the exception of one game. We ended up with a fielding percentage of .926 (10 errors) at this age level we thought it was a pretty good standard. I thought our pitchers disappointed a little bit in that we made it very clear the importance of throwing strikes. We ended up as a staff, allowing 36 walks. This was only shadowed but our inability to make contact at the plate. We whiffed 57 times over the course of the week. We had a core of 5 guys that were outstanding with the bats, with Nick Jones and Bailey Short being incredible standouts. For others it was a bit of a steep learning curve. However to their credit everyone improved by tournaments end. One thing as a staff we were proud to see was the tenacity and team unity the boys displayed each day.

We had a slow start over all but we faced some very quality teams first up, in Cronulla North and Swan Hills (Bronze Winners). But we turned it around, largely thanks to a brilliant performance on both sides of the ball by Dylan Strickland against the Northern DBacks. We finished pool play at 2-2. Having won 3 and lost 4 I think everyone would agree it was a disappointing end to the tournament. I felt we failed as a team in just one game considering, and that was the second game against the Gold Coast. It was a game we should have won except it slipped away as a result of walks and defensive errors late in the game.

The team overall did us and themselves proud by playing hard and being conscious of the fundamentals. Sadly we were outplayed but better quality pitching but by no means out classed.

I must make mention and well done Andrew Scott and Ken Kobayashi for all your work with the Development Squad. Thank you for the extra work you put into our program as well, your assistance has been invaluable.Alex Ditrich has been a fantastic asset to this program. His modern approach to coaching, and his in depth understanding of the game’s defensive fundamentals have gone a long way to getting this team to where it is. Jeff Kevan was selected as our Pitching Coach for his knowledge of pitching mechanics, arm strength and conditioning, and an overall approach to the game. These three keys will be a factor in our success.

Andrew Sperling was a brilliant addition in the end. We had a few moments early on which were a result of difference in opinion in regards to selection and team structure. However he provided a support network and a tournament un-derstanding that was second to none. It wasn’t easy to be added late like he was but he went a long way to pulling the program together. I’d like thank Lawrie Moore, Brenton Short, Andrew Gluyas, and Mark Brougham for all your help during trainings. Thank you to all the parents for all time you have invested into your boys and the program. With out your support the program can not run. Finally, thank you to Baseball SA and its board of directors for allowing me the chance to coach this program and providing support and guidance where ever possible. I think it been a long year for everyone in-volved and we have all had to deal with one outside influence or another but I hope we can all moved forward for the betterment of the sport.
