As Moeller continues to adapt and change and deal with

many of our current economic realities, there exists an

unnerving gap between our future needs and our ability to

meet them. If you look out five years and imagine what it

will cost to operate one of the best Catholic and Marianist

high schools in the country, it can be daunting.

One of our most critical and important goals is to maintain

a vibrant and viable enrollment. In order to do that, we need

to make Moeller as affordable as possible. That requires us

to be able to meet more and more of the demonstrated

financial need on the part of our families. That financial

need has virtually doubled in just the last five years, making

a Moeller education harder and harder to reach for future

Men of Moeller and their families. We currently meet only

half of that need.

We truly believe that we offer what many people want for

their sons - a chance for a young man to be formed in his

faith, to achieve academically and to grow individually.

During this formative period between the ages of 14 and 18,

more things can happen in this concentrated time than

perhaps any other period of these young men's lives.

Moeller impacts these young men and truly makes a difference.

So the question presents itself: What can we do to make sure

that Moeller remains a place for all who desire it?

Many Catholic schools must compete for excellent students,

outstanding faculty and ever-changing programming and

technology. Just as important as this competition for excellence

is the competition for financial support on the part of all of

our stakeholders. Ultimately, after all, that financial support

will be the fuel of our continuing positive impact.

You've heard me say before that our best in our present and

our past comes out in our stories. Storytelling becomes a sort

of support system and should be treasured and nurtured by

all. Some of the best Moeller stories that I've heard can

almost take on a sacred quality to them. They speak to our

Marianist underpinning and the shoulders on which we all

stand. In a society with many of our institutions and traditions

in turmoil, our storied Moeller tradition must remain stable.

That stability will only happen as our culture of philanthropy

and levels of financial support at Moeller continue to grow.

The work we do every day is noble and the young Men of

Moeller deserve your unwavering support as they create many

of their own stories. And in our current economic reality,

your support of what you value is vitally important.

Warm regards,

Bill Hunt

President

In simplest terms, we cannot accomplishthis noble mission without your help.

When you think about it, philanthropy really is a litmustest of Moeller’s constituents’ concern for our missionand worthiness. If we don’t meet this litmus test head on,we’ll be delivering less than a standard of excellence.

Best regards,

You could say that this issue of Moeller Magazine is particularlydata driven. Our cover feature, “Learning in the 21st-Century,”is our first installment of several upcoming articles that willshow you how our educational leaders – administration, teachers,and staff – are working together with the young men of Moellerto bring out their best and prepare them to be successful collegestudents, community leaders, workers, and citizens.

In this edition we introduce youto the new “3Rs” of education: rigor,relevance, and relationships.Principal Blane Collison has been astrong advocate of the Rigor/Relevance Framework™ (R/RF) that was developed by renownededucation leader Dr. Bill Daggett,founder and CEO of theInternational Center for Leadershipin Education. This system alignswith the most recent educationalresearch, best practices, and most ofall, Moeller’s Marianist mission.

As part of Principal Collison’seducational vison, in this feature we focus on the school’s new,expanded Guidance Department and how the counselors arecollaborating to create a custom counseling program for Moellerbased on the American School Counselor Assocation’s (ASCA)national model, which is the most up-to-date, research-based,data-driven framework for guidance programs (see page 19).

At the core of Daggett’s Rigor/Relevance Framework™ isthis research-based truth: teaching matters. And Moeller’s educators are among the nation’s best. Art/Photo DepartmentChair Greg Stanforth (Moeller Class of 1967) was just namedone of the top-30 most admired educators for 2014 (see page 7)and new German teacher Linda Zins-Adams accepted anational award in November for how she effectively integratestechnology into her classrooms (see page 25).

Those are a few R/RF vignettes in this magazine, butplease check our website (www.Moeller.org) for the most currentways Moeller is modeling the new 3Rs. For example, under

the RIGOR category, in the News section ofour website you will find a slideshow ofEnglish Department Chair Geoffrey Girard’slaunch of his two new sci-fi novels publishedby Simon & Schuster. In October Girard spokeabout his work at Joseph-Beth Booksellers to arecord crowd that included many Moeller students, faculty, staff, and administrators.

Under RELATIONSHIPS (also in the News section of ourwebsite) you will find a poignant special section that TheCincinnati Enquirer published in June about Moeller’s Grief Group.

As for RELEVANCE, if you check on our hompepage underWhat’s Happening or Spotlight, you’ll find numorous waysthe school is providing meaningful projects and activities todevelop the minds, hearts – and spirits of the Men of Moeller.

One last bit of data – we want to share the survey results wegathered in April when you responded to our first MoellerMagazine questionnaire. In the spring/summer edition of themagazine, we asked for your feedback about the magazine’s content and quality (and more), and we were pleased to learnthat you like what you’ve read so far. You will find the completesurvey results on our website under News & Media/MoellerMagazine, and we will continue to listen to your feedback so wecan make this publication a meaningful connection between youand Moeller High School.

Reader Feedback: Lawrence Dieters of the Class of 1965 recently wroteto us about our last magazine issue and provided helpful feedback:

On page 18 of the spring/summer 2013 magazine there is a storyabout the “Most Popular School in Cincinnati.” Barry Borman ’64 isquoted as saying, “We began our winning tradition that first year,"and that they were all freshmen at the time of the WSAI contest. Thiscannot be true because my class, the Class of '65, also participated inthat contest.

On page 16, you have a story and senior picture of Robert Deiters, butthe color photo of him is in fact Robert’s and my cousin, Richard P.Deiters Jr. '64.

Also on page 16, the picture attached to the John Dietz bio is actually apicture of Anthony DelVecchio ’64.

Thanks for the updates, Lawrence! We strive to get it right and appreciate your thoughtful corrections.

P.S. Congrats to Ria Davidson(mother of Andrew Davidson ’16 ofTrinity House) who won the prizebasket of Moeller spirit items!

The Blessed Father William Joseph Chaminade stated that, “New times call for new methods.”Never has this been more true than in educating today’s 21st-Century learners.

Research bears out that new methods of teaching aimed at increasing student engagementis the critical piece to ensuring that students receive a quality education. Gone are the days of astudent sitting passively in a classroom attempting to absorb informational items presented tothem by the teacher. This outdated model of education was what we call “Sage on the Stage.”Traditionally, education was more “teacher centered” and focused on students listening totheir lectures during class, working later on “homework problems,” and then returning thenext day to have the teacher grade the assignment.

The assumption was that students’ knowledge grew as they listened and that they couldeffectively absorb all that was being presented. This was when students were considered “pas-sive learners.”

A Moeller education today is focused on actively engaging students in their learning experi-ences, allowing them the opportunity to apply what they have learned through questioning,exploring new ideas, and gaining a greater depth of understanding. This newer model called“Guide on the Side” works by helping students make relevant connections and having themapply their knowledge to real-world situations and meaningful problem solving. We nowknow that students need to be “active learners” in the classroom.

One of the new methods being employed by Moeller teachers today is known as the“flipped classroom” approach. This practice is designed to have the teacher’s lecture be the“homework.” In a flipped classroom, students view video lecture via their tablet PCs, and thenreturn to class to apply what they have learned. They do this by actively participating in class-room activities. Using this process, students also engage with their classmates and learn fromeach other by making relevant connections consistent with the teacher’s learning objectives.This process enables the teacher to guide students in applying the lesson, rather than expect-ing them to do this accurately in isolation at home without any the teacher supervision.

The Covey research project, completed in 2001, proved that when an individual “teaches”or shares information they have learned within a 24-hour period, they retain 95% of whatwas presented. The flipped classroom allows students to draw from their teacher’s knowledgebase, to ask questions relevant to the lecture material, and to learn from their peers’ discover-ies and ideas, thus creating a classroom setting much more conducive to today’s collaborativeworkplace environment.

We know that today’s students gain a great deal more when they are actively engaged intheir learning rather than passively absorbing information. Therefore, a Moeller educationtoday includes new methods, like the flipped classroom, to ensure they are better equipped for21st-Century challenges.

FALL/WINTER 2013 • 4

Most people know that last year Moeller won twostate team championships – one in football and one inbaseball. They may also know that two of our wrestlerswon individual state titles as well.

But what they may not know is that our athletes workjust as hard in the classroom as they do on the field,always keeping their education a top priority.

Valedictorian Chris Kessling ’13 was a key player onthe football team and named Academic All-Star. But inaddition, the collective GPA of all 22 lettermen wasranked among the best of more than 700 Ohio schools,which earned the Moeller Crusader Football Team thetitle of Academic All-Ohio – an impressive accomplishmentoff the field as well.

Many may already know that our volleyball teamworked hard to defend their 2012 State Championshipand finished the regular season with a perfect 10 – 0record, earning an 11th league title in 18 seasons. Butwhat truly distinguished the team this year was their collective GPA (a 3.75 average) and that the MoellerVolleyball Team received the Ohio – Team AcademicAward for the fourth consecutive year.

As a comprehensive, college-prep educational institution,we offer a broad range of courses – from special educationto Advanced Placement – believing that all our students

The Academic Success of the Men of MoellerBy Principal Blane Collison

can be successful in college, and we provide theresources and academic safety nets to ensure that theyare prepared to do so. But few know the rigor involvedin our upper-level AP and Honors courses. For example,this past year 69 of our students were named AP Scholarsand earned college credit due to their exam scores. Weadministered 346 AP tests this past year, which is 100+more than in previous years.

And this year our senior business finance studentshave the opportunity to earn three college credits for thecourse – for free. Our students can also earn college cred-it in our Pre-Engineering (new this year) and GermanPrograms as well.

One last academic note: Each year 98 – 99% of our students are enrolled in colleges across the nation, andthis past year 58% of our seniors received academicscholarship offers totaling $19.5M. What may surprise mostpeople is that of the 130 students who received collegescholarships, 113 of those were academic scholarships. Thesenumbers are a testament to the rigor of our curriculum.

So while we salute our champions on the field, we alsosalute the Men of Moeller for their academic excellence!(And please spread the word – this is one secret we wantto get out.)

This year 69 students were named AP Scholars.

National Merit ScholarshipCorporation HonorsMoeller Scholars

As a Catholic School in the Marianist tradition, one of thekey tenets of the Characteristics of a Marianist Education is toprovide a quality, integral education. Each day our facultyimparts the knowledge necessary for success and combinesthat with relevant application of the ideas being presented toour students. Our students benefit by utilizing this knowledgein new ways, connecting their classroom with real-life eventsand applications and using their new-found knowledge inmeaningful ways.

Our students work hard in their academic pursuits, and asprincipal, it is my distinct pleasure to announce that the membersof the National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC) havenamed seniors Kellis Kincaid (single photo, on left side) andNick Schlueter (single photo, on right side) National MeritScholar Semifinalists, and they have named the following students National Merit Scholar Commended Students: Joe Pappalardo, James Rieger, Preston Rumsey, TylerSchumacher, and Andrew Strotman.

These students were selected nationally from among 34,000students who have excelled in their academic endeavors.“These young men being named Commended Students havedemonstrated outstanding potential for academic success,”commented a spokesperson for NMSC. “These young menrepresent a valuable national resource. Recognizing theiraccomplishments, as well as the key role their schools play intheir academic development, is vital to the advancement ofeducational excellence in our nation. We hope this recognitionof their academic dedication allows them to continue to pursue academic success.”

NECC’s summer leadership conference coveredtopics on leadership and character development,team building, goal setting, decision making, groupdynamics and interpersonal relationships, conflict-management skills, problem-based learning, and strategic planning. Moeller SpeechTherapist Jenifer Johnson spoke to the conferenceabout stress management. In addition to makingstress management the focus of the Red RibbonBreakfast presentations, the students created a sup-port group called “REST” that meets periodicallythroughout the year and helps students cope with the stress in their lives. HONOR ROLL of DonorsJuly 1, 2012, to June 30, 2013Time, Talent, and Treasure… There are many ways to give back andbecome involved at Archbishop Moeller High School. We are most gratefulfor all those parents, alumni, and friends who donated to show theyappreciate the value of a Moeller education. Due to their generosity, wehave met many of our goals and begin this year with hope for the future.As you read through this Donor Honor Roll, we thank all those who havemade the future promising for our students.

Page 13: 2013 14 moellermagazine fw final

With Deep Appreciation forYour Generosity in 2012-13First, I wanted to take this time to thank all ofyou who gave to the 2012-13 Annual Fund.Our final fundraising total for the year was$1,130,946.59, and the Moeller Family set a fewschool records with their gifts, which says somuch about the community’s generosity.

A few of our record-breaking numbers included: • 1,526 total donors • 49 donors giving $5,000 or more, • 170 donors donating $1,000 or more, and • $694,212.50 in unrestricted funds.

As great as these numbers are, this doesn’tpaint the entire picture of our developmentefforts for the school. Not only do we raisefunds through our Annual Fund, but we alsoraise funds through other events or projects(i.e., the Main Event Charity Auction; capital projects, such as the new locker roomrenovation and Veterans Memorial; the Student Fall Raffle, etc.).

This year the Moeller community at large raised$2,252,369.88, which includes our Annual Fund,Main Event, Named Scholarships, Student FallRaffle, Locker Room Project, Veterans Memorial,and our Moeller Endowment earnings. Thistotal affects every young man of Moeller, and I can’t thank you enough for being a part ofsomething truly special here.

Because tuition alone does not cover the actualcost of educating a student at Moeller, the schoolrelies heavily on Annual Fund contributions to help make up the difference each year. Thisyear’s per-student gap is $2,873.

Our 2013-14 Annual Fund Drive kicked offSeptember 1, 2013, and we are already well onour way to reaching our $1.4 Million Goal.

On November 20, 2013, our Annual Fund Drivestood at $663,006.51, and our total developmenteffort was $942,417.74. This is a great start, butwe have a long way to go.

So I challenge you, your family, and yourfriends to participate in our Annual Fund thisyear and help be a part of shaping the minds ofour Men of Moeller. Help us reach $1 Million byDecember 31, 2013. Every gift makes a difference.

Giving to the Annual Fund is a way of showingmy appreciation for all that Moeller has done forme and for my family. Besides the fine educationreceived by me and my six sons, the Moellercommunity has helped our family in ways Ican never repay. They stood by us during timesof sorrow and celebrated with us during timesof joy. Moeller is a vital part of our family, andmy dream is to see my grandsons become Menof Moeller. —Bruce Buckley ’67

My wish is that someday soon Moeller will bein a position to provide greater assistance toworking-class families so that those young menwill benefit as I did from the experience. As anonly son, I don’t have blood brothers, but duringmy time at Moeller I became part of a brotherhoodwith classmates and others who walked thesehallowed halls—a bond that lasts a lifetime. Inmy 30+ years since graduation, I’ve interactedwith numerous Moeller “brothers” as co-workers,competitors, clients, and more. Our Moellerbond has served us well and unites us in trustand mutual respect. —John Costello ’79

Moeller’s Mothers’ Club has beenblessed with the opportunity toraise funds through our annualFashion Show and other eventsto benefit our boys and theschool in areas that are not part of the “regular” budget.

This year we were able to use some of theproceeds to update Moeller’s faculty and stafflounge. We wanted them to know how muchwe value the time they spend with our sons.—Lynda Mackey, Moeller President ofMothers’ Club (Mother of Cody Mackey ’14)

The Moeller Familyplayed a significantrole during the mosttrying, yet excitingtime in my life. Iwouldn’t be the son,brother, husband, orfather I am todaywithout the strongsupport from Moeller’sfaculty, alumni, and myclassmates. It gives megreat joy to help providea young man thesame opportunity to have amazingexperiences and buildstrong relationships atMoeller. It’s importantto me to give back toMoeller, and I’dencourage otheralumni to set upscholarships fordeserving young men.—Marshall Hyzdu ’96

My parents andMoeller instilled inme so many of mycore values andstrengths, and havemade me the man Iam today. I givebecause I feel it is socritically important to

pay it forward so that my three boys and allfuture Men of Moeller have this same opportunityto learn and develop into strong leaders, men ofFaith, and loving family members. I give becausemy parents gave me this great opportunity toattend Moeller, and I wish this opportunity forall young men who desire to walk through thedoors at Moeller. I know that my participationin the Annual Fund is a direct way to make thisa reality. —Nick Hodge ’94, Alumni Association President

Learning in the 21st-Century: Rigor, Relevance & Relationships

New Guidance Department ModelComplements Moeller’s Educational Vision

What will our young men need to succeed in the 21st-Century as college students, citizens, leaders, andworkers? According to Harvard education leader TonyWagner, it comes down to seven core competencies:*

1. Critical thinking and problem solving;

2. Collaboration across networks and leading by influence;

3. Agility and adaptability;

4. Initiative and entrepreneurialism;

5. Effective oral and written communication;

6. Assessing and analyzing information; and

7. Curiosity and imagination.

Another national leading resource, the Partnership for21st-Century Skills,** has identified similar competencies:

1. Mastery of core subjects and 21st-Century themes(including global awareness and financial, civic, health,and environmental literacies);

2. Learning & innovation skills (the 4Cs: creativity & innovation, critical thinking & problem solving, communication, and collaboration);

3. Information, media, and technology skills; and

4. Life & career skills.

With these core elements touted by experts at the forefront of 21st-Century learning, how will Moeller’sleaders ensure that the school’s curriculum, teacher pedagogy, and assessment systems measure up and foster 21st-Century student achievement?

Moeller High School Principal Blane Collison has theanswer. It’s the Daggett System for Effective Instructionthat focuses on the new 3Rs of education: Rigor,Relevance, and Relationships. And he’s been reinforcingthis system since 2006.

* Dr. Tony Wagner is the first Innovation Education Fellow at the Technology &Entrepreneurship Center at Harvard. Prior to that, he was founder and co-director of theChange Leadership Group at the Harvard Graduate School of Education for more than adecade (www.tonywagner.com<http://www.tonywagner.com>).

**The Partnership for 21st-Century Skills is supported by the National EducationAssociation (NEA), the College Board’s Advanced Placement (AP) Program, and numerousbusiness partners, such as Apple, Ford, and Disney (www.p21.org<http://www.p21.org>).

The New 3Rs of Education: Rigor, Relevance, and Relationships

This Rigor/Relevance Framework™ (RRF) system was developed byrenowned education leader Dr. Bill Daggett, founder and CEO of theInternational Center for Leadership in Education. It is a research-and best- practices based tool that examines curriculum, instruction, and assessment.At a basic level, the framework defines rigor as “learning in which studentsdemonstrate a thorough, in-depth mastery of challenging tasks to developcognitive skills through reflective thought, analysis, problem-solving, evaluation, and creativity.” (RRF, p.4)

The RRF defines relevance as “learning in which students apply coreknowledge, concepts, or skills to solve real-world problems.” (RRF, p. 5)

As for defining relationships, Daggett says, “One of the findings of theInternational Center/CCSSO research on characteristics of successful schoolsfunded by the Gates Foundation was that teacher-to-student relationshipshave a major impact on student achievement. The presence of strong, positive,trusting relationships impacts student engagement and therefore fuels students’sense of belonging and commitment to their own learning.” (The DaggettSystem for Effective Instruction: Where Research and Best Practices Meet, p.8)

“The world in general – and America in particular – is being pushed byfundamental changes caused by both globalization and technology,” saysPrincipal Collison. “The implication for what students need to know and beable to perform is increasingly dramatic. Therefore the 3Rs of education –rigor, relevance, and relationship – are even more critical in preparing ourstudents for success… It is imperative that we provide them with a world-class education that prepares them for the issues of today – and the ability to

adapt to the changes of tomorrow. Dr. Daggett’s Rigor/RelevanceFramework is a key tool that will assist us in these efforts.”

Moeller’s New Guidance Department ModelFostering Rigor, Relevance, and Relationships

As part of Principal Blane Collison’s educational vision to further enhancethe goals of rigor, relevance, and relationships, he has expanded school’sGuidance Department staff this year and charged them with creating a new program for Moeller based on the American School CounselorAssocation’s national model.

“Today’s high school students are faced with a plethora of decisions relatedto their well-being,” he explains. “Guidance programs now more than ever arean essential component to ensuring students are making well-informed decisionsand shaping the future they desire to achieve. So this year Moeller added twoadditional counselors to its Guidance Department to bring the total to six, onefor each House represented within the school’s House System. The goal of thenew counseling model is to improve the pastoral care provided each studentduring his four-year high school journey.”

The department is currently collaborating to develop and implement a newguidance model based on the national framework recently developed by theAmerican School Counselor Assocation (ASCA). The ASCA model aligns withCollison’s educational vision of rigor, relevance, and relationships, and offersthe following benefits:

• Ensures equitable access to a rigorous education for all students;

• Identifies the knowledge and skills all students will acquire as a result of the K-12 comprehensive school counseling program;

• Is delivered to all students in a systematic fashion;

• Is based on data-driven decision making; and

• Is provided by a state-credentialed school counselor.

“The vision for implementing the new program with specific goals to be achieved centers on proven research,” says Collison. “An effective school counseling

model is comprehensive in scope, preventative in design, anddevelopmental in nature. This new model has been created to

ensure that every student receivesRelevance

what he needs for personal growth, academic achievement,and college/career readiness.”

In addition, the new model connects the counselorsdirectly with Moeller’s House System. Each counselornow collaborates with a designated House Dean andworks with the students of that House, which will enable a form of “looping” to occur: Like the Deans, thecounselors will remain with the same group of studentsthroughout their education at at Moeller, enabling themto get to know the students well during the course oftheir four years together.

“Assigning each counselor to a specific House allowsan increased understanding as it relates to all aspects of a student’s life,” says Collison. “Counselors will becomeincreasingly familiar with each student’s interests in theclassroom, along with his outside activities and familydynamics. Understanding these important aspects of a student’s life will assist the counselor in helping to lead the student to make positive, proactive, and healthy decisions. Along with teacher and House Deancollaboration, the new model also allows each counselorto actively engage students by using the House Systemactivities, M-Blocks, Mentor Groups, assemblies, andclass visits. Ultimately, this model actively promotes better communication with parents, teachers, HouseDeans, and the administration, so that more of our counselors’ time is spent in direct service to all studentshelping to ensure that every student receives maximumbenefits from guidance and counseling program.”

The New Counselors Share Their PerspectivesCounselor Paul Ramstetter, a long-time educator with a background as an

administrator and college teacher, sees the House System connection as being keyto the department’s success. “It takes our work to a whole other level,” he said.

Counselor Brian Gilronan (Moeller’s former pastoral ministry service director)believes the House System connection is already working out well with intervention efforts. “I like collaborating with the House Deans,” he says. “They’veprovided helpful insights so that we can more easily identify students who maybe experiencing challenges or getting in trouble ahead of time. We can then callthem down to our office to work to alleviate issues before they escalate.”

Counselor John Ward agrees, “I find the individual and weekly meetingswith the Deans helpful,” he says. “Alex (Thompson) brought me into his small-group talks, and we addressed important topics, like anti-bullying. TheFreshman Retreat really helped me connect with our students.”

The counselors are also working with the Deans to further develop the House System’s Man of Moeller course. “With freshmen we are working on their transition to high school, time-management skills, and goal setting,” saysGilronan. “With the sophomores we are focusing on identifying their learningstyles and helping them be effective self-advocates.”

One of the first goals of the counselors was to meet with all their seniors toassess how far along they were with the college application process and determinetheir college readiness. Counselor Kristen Merica said, “I asked (my seniors)what they had done so far to prepare, and I spent some time getting to knowthem and their goals.”

One area that will be a strong focus this year is collecting data. The counselorswill be using the National Student Clearinghouse, a resource for high schoolsthat matches alumni records against college enrollment and degree data. Usingthis database, Moeller will be able to gather important information regardingcollege attendance, persistence, and achievement of its graduates.

The counselors will be working together throughout the year to tailor thenational guidance model to fit Moeller’s specific needs and culture. “The modelwe develop must align with the school mission,” says Counselor Greg Derus.“We want to develop a program that incorporates our House model and ourfaith. Being a Catholic school, we are different – we want to address that andwork hand-in-hand with our teachers and Mentors.”

“The national ASCA model is not a canned program,” explains CounselorGail Ann Dorsey. “We can implement it how it best fits our school. We canchoose to be more proactive in developing college readiness and career planning.We are looking at different service providers to assist us in these areas. And wewill evolve all this over time.”

German Teacher Honored with NationalAward for Technology Integration

Moeller German Teacher Linda Zins-Adams recentlyreceived a national award for her innovative and effective waysof integrating technology in her German language courses.

The American Council on the Teaching of ForeignLanguages presented Zins-Adams with the award onNovember 22 at their convention in Orlando, FL.This national organization involves more than12,000 language educators and administratorsat every level, including government andindustry, and is dedicated to improving language instruction and meeting the changing needs of educators and their students.The former president of the AmericanAssociation of Teachers of German, AnneCostabile-Heming, nominated Zins-Adamsfor the award saying, “Linda connects herstudents to the real world, to authenticsources, to communicative language production in authentic situations… Her students leave high school with

Linda Zins-Adams: ‘Teacher of the Year’Zins-Adams currently teaches all levels of Moeller’s Germanclasses. She has been teaching since 1991 and has earnednumerous honors and awards during her career, includingbeing named “Teacher of the Year” by both the SouthernConference of Language Teaching and the Kentucky World

Language Association. In addition, she received Kentucky’s Duden Award twice, which is the state’s recognition of the German Teacher of the Year.

Zins-Adams is a cum laude graduate from the University of Cincinnati and earned a bachelor’s degree in German studies. Her alma mater has honored her with theOutstanding High German Teacher award twice, and she was the recipient of the university’s Distinguished Alumna Award in 2009. She also has a master’s degree in special education from Xavier University.

Zins-Adams has been featured in numerous publications and is the author of severalarticles on a variety of topics. She is also an accomplished speaker. At the Kentucky World Language Conference she was awarded Best Presentation, and she now presentspart time, traveling around the country to address world language professionals.

Currently, Zins-Adams also serves as Moeller’s AP coordinator due to her long-standingconnection with the College Board as a consultant, table leader, and reviewer. For the past several years, her students have had a 100% AP exam pass rate. She hopes to growMoeller’s German program in the same way and eventually resume her role as an AP teacher. Meanwhile, students in her German classes have an added benefit of beingable to earn up to 10 college credits through the University of Cincinnati’s Dual CreditProgram, much like students in Moeller’s new pre-engineering program and businessaccounting course.

21st-Century skills, competent in their ability to use the language, but, most of all, well-versed in technology, andopen to what the future holds.”

Zins-Adams was hired this fall to teach all levels ofMoeller’s German classes. “We are very proud of Linda’srecent accomplishment,” said Principal Blane Collison,“and we feel honored to welcome her to our community.Linda’s expertise in effectively integrating technology intothe curriculum made her a natural fit for Moeller.”

And Zins-Adams enthusiastically agrees. Shortly afterjoining the Moeller faculty, she began sharing her new professional experience online with the personal learningnetwork (PLN) that she created and now includes 205 otherworld language professionals who share tech ideas toimprove their teaching. Embracing Moeller’s technology-friendly environment and taking advantage of opportunitiesthat would have been considered taboo only a few yearsago, she said, “I have begun a new chapter in my twenty-first year of teaching at a school that is 1:1. Gone are the days when we have to actively prohibit student use of cell phones. Because of various platformsand sites, such as Google Voice (www.google.com/voice),Celly (cel.ly), Socrative (www.socrative.com), PollEverywhere (www.polleverywhere.com), and apps for onlinedictionaries that are readily available, my classroom hasbecome in the last five years more welcoming to cell phoneuse. I am excited about combining BYOD initiatives withan environment where every student has his own laptop from freshman through senior year.”

Comparing her current Moeller experience with technologyto her past 20 years, she said, “Many books are now

Creating 21st-Century Workers“In classrooms across the nation, students shouldbe learning how to use technology as a tool to collaborate, create, innovate, and problem-solve.This new kind of literacy equips them with 21st-Century skills they need to be global citizens.Now, that I am teaching in a One-to-One environment,I see that my students are more engaged and are learning new responsibilities in order to beequipped to complete a wider variety of tasks.Technology enables my students and me to easilyincorporate authentic content and allows me tohave an ’in-it-together’ feel in my classroom.”

or record their interpersonal and presentationalspoken tasks with Audacity (audacity.sourceforget.net). I can now have them update their wikis and record spoken tasks right in the classroom. It is this teacher’sdream finally realized!”

Zins-Adams also uses technology to provide authen-tic, real-world experiences that develop students’ criticalthinking and creativity. “Technology can be used to facili-tate learning in a way that allows students to self-explore,self-assess, and present material in a more professional-looking and interactive way,” she explains. “Giving stu-dents the opportunity to become producers of the con-tent is essential in today’s world.”

For example, she uses Bookemom.com, a website that enables her students to create their own bookstore-quality publications.

She also incorporates timely topics and props thatengage students while encouraging them to reflect ontheir use of technology. “We did a unit on cyber bullying,

Using State-of-the-ArtTablets ComputersWhen students first arrive at Moeller, they receive a state-of-the-art tablet PC. This year’s freshmen areusing a Fujitsu hybrid tablet PC that offers them theflexibility and durability of an iPad but also includes abuilt-in keyboard and a large touch screen for digitalpen use. The tablet features built-in handwriting recognition software that converts input into text, andwhen the pen is not in use, the tablet automatically re-adjusts to a touch interface. “Our PCs foster learning and encourage creativity, problem solving,and collaboration among our students and teachers,while giving them a tool that accommodates alllearning styles,” says Technology Director Jeff Gaier.“Our goal has always been to provide our studentswith the technology skills they would need in collegeand beyond. Since initiating our one-to-one LaptopProgram nearly two decades ago, we know our studentsgraduate technologically savvy, which helps them bebetter prepared, more organized, and fully engagedin the learning process once they get to college.”

Moeller’s Technology EvolutionMoeller’s commitment to technology can be traced toits Marianist mission to “educate for adaptation andchange.” Since opening in 1960, Moeller has used leading-edge technology tools to enhance student learning. The school began its commitment to integratingcomputer technology in the 1980s, purchasing its firstcomputers in 1984 and pioneering its One-to-OneLaptop Program in 1995. Shortly afterward, IBM honored Moeller as a model in technology education.This fall the Moeller freshmen received Fujitsu “hybrid”tablets that are more portable and user friendly.

A complete timeline of Moeller’s technology evolution is available on the school’s website,www.Moeller.org (see Academics/Laptop Program).

and the students had to compare the victim to theoffender,” said Zins-Adams. To prepare for this activity,students watched a video and read brochures. Afterward,they used hula hoops to create a Venn diagram.

Before she came to Moeller, Zins-Adams had a partnership with a school in Germany and used thisopportunity to provide authentic learning experiences byconnecting her lessons to the world beyond her classroom.“Students could blog, Skype, text, email, and send snapshotsfrom their world on a daily basis,” she explained whenshe became a Teacher of the Year finalist for the SouthernConference on Language Teaching. “My goal as a worldlanguage teacher is to empower students with the abilityto connect with people from other cultures."

At Moeller, Zins-Adams continued her German cultureconnection by collaborating with language educators atSycamore High School and Ursuline Academy. Theyarranged for a group of students visiting from Ilmenau,Germany, the sister city for Blue Ash, to shadow for aday at the three schools with a few students takingGerman I who served as ambassadors. “I want allstudents to be globally attuned and see how theseconnections can positively shape their perspectiveof the world,” she said.

With all the advantages of today’s technology,Zins-Adams is quick to emphasize that thisresource should be closely monitored toensure it is an effective learning tool and nota distraction in the classroom. “Technologysurrounds us, and we can’t incorporateeverything,” says Zins-Adams. “Everyone

has a different situation at their school and in their area.”So she counsels her colleagues in her PLN to be selectiveand choose what resources work best for them.

And she advises them to allow their students to bepart of their learning process. “Don’t be afraid to ask orhave your students guide you,” she says. “Just becauseyou are the teacher doesn’t mean you can’t learn fromyour students. A true 21st-Century teacher facilitateslearning - and learning should be an exchange, not a dictation.” M

Educating in the Family SpiritCrusader Connections

Dear Alumni & Friends,The word “engagement” is a commonly used termtoday in our business and personal lives. Projects succeedor fail based upon whether the leader is fully “dialed-in”and determined to drive a successful outcome. Ourpersonal relationships blossom or falter based on ourlevel of engagement in others’ interests, aspirations, andwelfare. At a more intimate level, our engagement to ourfuture spouse is a promise to love, honor, and respect thatperson throughout our lives. Engagement and personalconnection is fundamentally critical to the success ofany relationship, project, or organization. The MoellerAlumni Association is fully committed to fostering theengagement, the strong connection and bond, amongour 11,000-plus alumni base and our alma mater.

This fall, the strong engagement of our alumni hasbeen evident in numerous ways. Our Reunion Weekend (Classes ending in’3 and ’8) was a huge success, with hundreds of alumni participating in ourCrusader Classic Golf Outing, the Moeller football game and tailgate atLockland Stadium, and the class-specific gatherings in the evenings at localrestaurants. Our Alumni Association’s kick-off meeting at the Green DiamondGallery was very well attended. And every weekend before home and away football games, M-FAN brings out the Moeller fire truckand grill and hosts a tailgate for the entire Moeller Family - it is the best high school football atmosphere in thecountry, bar none!

Our alumni’s sense of pride in the success of our past and engagement in the direction Moeller is headingfor the future is evident every time we gather together at any event. I hopethat as we continue to grow, more and more of our classmates join us atthese events, re-engage with friends from all eras at Moeller, and re-connectwith that unique feeling of being a member of the Moeller Family.

So please help us get the word out about our activities - and invite your friendsto participate as well in any of our upcoming events this year. We have somegreat events planned for the remainder of the year, and I hope to see you there.

In an effort to further connect and engage our alumni base on numerouslevels, we are rolling out a new initiative this year: A “Year of Service” forthe Alumni Association. We are teaming up with John Hough (PastoralMinistry’s new service director) and the students at Moeller for one communityservice outing each month, including MACH 1, Matthew 25 Ministries,Christmas on Campus, Ronald McDonald House, and Relay for Life. Servicehas always been a defining trait of a Man of Moeller, and the AlumniAssociation is very proud and excited to give back to our community andengage with existing students in such a powerful setting. We hope this is adifferent avenue for more alumni to re-connect with Moeller and know thatwe all will be very proud of the results. If you’re interested in joining us atany of these events, just email me at [email protected] or MaryFischer at [email protected] to let us know.

Thank you for all you do to make Moeller the best high school in thecountry and for making our Alumni Association the proud organization it istoday. Mary and I and our Alumni Board are as engaged as ever in makingthe Alumni Association a meaningful and special place for you to re-connectwith the Moeller Family, and we really hope to continue to see new faces as we work to foster that special bond and engagement between our alumni and Moeller High School. God Bless,

Will Blount ’12 Wins 1st Place, $1,000 at DJ CompetitionBy Shaughn Phillips - Staff Writer University of Dayton Flyer News October 23, 2013

Alums In The News

DJs from around the region came together Thursday, Oct. 17, for Red Bull’s Thre3styleUniversity competition to show their skills and captivate the crowd. The DJs from theUniversity of Cincinnati, The Ohio State University, Northern Kentucky University,Miami University, and the University of Dayton made the ”YouTube” DJs at Timothy’sBar and Grill look silly. DJ Web, also known as sophomore industrial engineering major,Will Blount, represented UD.

Blount said he has been DJing for about five years and is a resident DJ at The St. Clairin Cincinnati.

He said he spent roughly a month and a half working on his set for the competition,where he had 15 minutes to “wow” the crowd and judges. Based on skill, originality,creativity, track selection and stage presence, DJ Web blew the first two DJs out of thewater with his set. The last two DJs were good as well, but at the end of the night, theywere coming up to Blount and congratulating him before the judges had even madetheir decision.

When DJ Web was announced the winner of Red Bull’s Thre3style competition, thecrowd went crazy again. Besides the title of the “best-rocking DJ on campus in the area,”Blount won $1,000.

Blount said he sees himself working with music on the production side on the westcoast, but in the meantime, he will continue to DJ primarily in the Cincinnati area.
