Expedition Cruises aboard Corinthian and Ocean Nova

Antarctica

Page 2: 2013-14 Antarctica

There are no human sounds in this land of primeval beauty, only the wild cries of birds, seals, and whales echoing across a vast expanse of land and sea. We invite you to join us this winter—high summer in the Southern hemisphere—on a

voyage to Antarctica, Earth’s last frontier.

Venture far away from the world we know, where Nature has her own clock, timed to the calving of a glacier, the flight of an Albatross, and the slow, inexorable art that waves and

wind sculpt upon the icebergs.

TWO UNIQUE SHIPS —

TWO WAYS TO GET TO ANTARCTICA

Cross Drake Passage by Ship—

The all suite, 100-guest Corinthian takes the traditional route, sailing from Ushuaia, Argentina across Drake Passage, two days each way. As Corinthian cruises south from Ushuaia, Albatrosses will likely be skimming above our bow as we head to the Antarctic Convergence. Then, for five full days, we will explore the Antarctic Peninsula and its surrounding islands, where excursions and landings may include visits to 10,000-strong penguin rookeries, old whaling stations, operational research stations, and Elephant seal colonies.

Cross Drake Passage by Jet Aircraft—

Antarctic XXI pioneered “Air Cruises” to Antarctica ten years ago. Today they employ a modern four engine BAE-146 Aircraft to cross the Drake Passage from Punta Arenas, Chile to King George Island in just two hours. Upon landing, guests simply walk a short distance to board zodiacs to take them to board the 67-guest Ocean Nova. Guests will have six days and five nights aboard to explore this amazing destination.

Far to the south lies a land of dazzling snowfields, crystalline

glaciers, and dramatically carved ice mountains soaring

above an untamed frozen wilderness – The Great White

Continent — Antarctica

Both ships’ ideal size and maneuverability allow for in-depth discovery,

while the fleet of Zodiac landing craft provides up-close viewing and shore

expeditions. Expedition leaders and naturalists on each ship include some of

the most experienced and knowledgeable experts on Antarctica’s terrain,

bird life, sea life, geology, and glaciology, and will enlighten you throughout

your voyage via lecturers, presentations, and on-site nature observation.

Few people will ever experience the otherworldly grandeur of what is

known as the “White Continent,” but even fewer will have the great fortune

to explore Antarctica aboard Corinthian, or Ocean Nova with their rosters of

scientists and naturalists. Join us for the trip of a lifetime.

A Small Shipboard Community of Like-Minded Travelers Meeting and mingling with your fellow travelers is one of the greatest pleasures of the voyage. Returning

travelers write to us again and again about this. Your traveling companions are well-traveled, friendly, ac-

complished in their careers, and have interesting stories to share. They enjoy exploring places, learning

about them, and making new friends. You are not an anonymous tourist in a crowd of strangers; you are a

welcome member of a small shipboard community.

Page 4: 2013-14 Antarctica

The Austral Summer Antarctica’s Austral Summer is short, but the days are long, stretching to midnight and beyond. And they are sur-

prisingly warm, too: highs in the 30s F–just the right temperature for a glacier to occasionally calve, with a thun-

derous crash, into the sea. Dolphins might see our ship out from Ushuaia. Petrels, Albatrosses, and Skuas follow

our wake to the Antarctic Convergence. On the Antarctic Peninsula, Gentoo, Chinstrap, and Adelie penguins nest

by the thousands, waddling, slipping, diving, and crying in mass cacophony. Sheathbills, Kelp Gulls, and Shags fight

for space on the cliffs. Elephant seals wallow and growl on the shore. Leopard seals cruise between ice floes.

Humpback and Minke whales breach and skim the surface.

They are not shy. They do not hide. Whales will often come right up to our Zodiac landing craft (virtually unsinka-

ble boats made famous by Jacques Cousteau). We also land right onto the pebble beaches and igneous shores to

observe the incredible wildlife. Each day presents a new discovery. In the inexorable light of the season, you will

witness the White Continent coming alive.

Intelligence & Expertise in the Antarctic

We know that Antarctica is a dream, an aspiration,

perhaps a once-in-a- lifetime event. We know you want it

done right.

Our philosophy is simple: we aim to provide the most

enthralling and enlightening experience available on the

seventh continent, in complete comfort. Both ships

feature teams of experienced expedition Leaders and

Guides to provide information about what you are

seeing, and ensuring your safety. On board, on shore,

and in our Zodiac boats, through lectures, presentations,

and informal discussions, they will create a

comprehensive understanding of Antarctica’s flora and

fauna, sea life, geology, glaciology, and history of

exploration. Our experience in Antarctica is not just one of

awe-inspiring sight-seeing, but a complete learning

adventure as well. And for this reason, you can be

assured of equally stimulating, intellectually curious

cruise companions for an expedition without equal.

Aboard he 100-guest Corinthian, our Expedition Leader,

John Frick, has logged over 30 Antarctic expeditions and

is among the most experienced tour advisors in the

world’s coldest climates. Our naturalists and lecturers,

profiled on the following pages, comprise a truly

astonishing assortment of intellect and expertise.

While aboard the Ocean Nova, with there are twelve

naturalists and polar guides, the highest expedition staff/

guest ratio in the industry. Professional, experienced,

and passionate. They are extraordinary leaders and

experts and guides assuring your access and edification.

Corinthian, Dedicated to Exploration The elegant, all-suite 100-guest Corinthian has established itself as one of the finest expedition cruise ships in Antarc-

tica. With an ice-strengthened hull, a fleet of Zodiac inflatable craft for

forays ashore, an experienced complement of officers and crew, and a

set of retractable fin stabilizers for smoother sailing, Corinthian can

explore the Antarctic Peninsula and Antarctic islands in comfort and

safety. And 360° views of the panorama of ever- changing light, beau-

tifully sculpted ice forms, and rich wildlife are possible thanks to ex-

pansive deck space.

Guests are accommodated in 50 outside-facing suites, each of

which affords views of the spectacular Antarctic scenery. Excellent

cuisine is created by Corinthian’s European chefs and served in the

stately restaurant at a single, unassigned seating. Weather per-

mitting, meals are also served alfresco in the outdoor café. Corin-

thian also features two lounges, a library, beauty salon, exercise

area, elevator serving all decks, a sun deck with Jacuzzi, and a well-

equipped infirmary supervised by a doctor. The ship is operated

and served by 70 seasoned officers and crew and meets the latest

international safety rules, including those of the U.S. Coast Guard.

An Unforgettable Voyage Led By Seasoned

Expedition Leaders & Naturalists

Each voyage features a team of experienced expedition staff and lecturers—expert naturalists and scientists

who know Antarctica well and are eager to introduce you to the geology, wildlife, and history of this awe-

inspiring land. In the company of these noted experts, you will cruise magnificent ice-filled channels, explore

busy penguin rookeries, and learn about the rhythms of life in the “Deep South.” Among the experts you may

travel with aboard Corinthian are:

John Frick returns for his eighth season leading expedition travel to Antarctica. John’s wanderlust surfaced during his undergraduate

studies and has since led him to live in Alaska, to work in Nepal as Peace Corps Volunteer, and to lead hundreds of programs over the last

15 years for Travel Dynamics International. His voyages have taken him to many far-flung areas of the globe including Africa, Alaska,

South America, the Canadian Arctic, Greenland, the Baltic, the Mediterranean, Africa, India, trans-Atlantic, the South Pacific and more. He

again looks forward to sharing with Corinthian guests his enthusiasm for travel and for the wonders of the natural world, in particular for

the White Continent.

Ignacio Rojas studied Biology in the University of Sao Paulo in Brazil and pursued further education in Ecology, studying and working at

INPA, the Brazilian National Institute for Research in the Amazon. Ignacio started his career in expedition cruises in 1992 when he joined

his first vessel on a trip to the Amazon, followed soon after by his first expedition to Antarctica. He has embraced traveling as a full time

activity, enjoying the chance to bring awareness about the last wild places of our planet.

Born and raised in England, Jonathan Green completed a Bachelor of Sciences degree in Geology and Geography. In 1988 he

trained as a Naturalist with the Galapagos National Park Service and Charles Darwin Research Station. John is also an avid diver and

accomplished photographer, and his photography has been published in The Wildlife Photographer of the Year, Time, Geo, BBC Wildlife

and the Royal Geographical magazines, amongst others, and has been exhibited at the Natural History Museum of London. He contin-

ues to lead adventure trips, diving excursions, and photo workshops throughout Latin America and the Antarctic. In 1989 he was

elected Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society of London.

In 2003-2004, Trevor Potts and three colleagues successfully re-created Ernest Shackleton’s 1916 epic mission by boat from Elephant

Island to South Georgia. And in 2001 he completed Shackleton’s mountain crossing from King Haakon Bay to Stromness. On this voyage,

he will share his experiences and insights about this legendary, challenging odyssey, about Shackleton himself, and about other historical

figures and expeditions in the exploration of the White Continent. Trevor has nine seasons of experience working on Antarctic expedition

ships.

Juan Pablo Seco Pon has a degree in Biology from the National University of Mar del Plata in Argentina and is devoted to the study and

conservation of marine vertebrates, especially seabirds. He has led several research campaigns throughout the South Western Atlantic

Ocean and has visited remote areas of the Chilean sector, studying the interactions between seabirds and commercial fisheries. He has

participated in international at-sea surveys to develop and implement mitigation measures aboard commercial long liners. In his time off,

Juan Pablo works as a naturalist guide based in Ushuaia and Tierra del Fuego. This will be his fifth Antarctic season.

France native Cathy Zell returns for her eighth expedition season in Antarctica. An expert in seabirds, Cathy looks forward to sharing her

knowledge and passion of Antarctica with travelers. Her true spirit of exploration is evidenced by her many accomplishments, including a

five-week kayak expedition in Greenland and a full south-to-north bike ride along the entire length of Latin America— not to mention the

numerous trekking and mountain climbing she has done around the world. Cathy serves as a Mission Director for the Ligue pour la Protec-

tion des Oiseaux, a French organization dedicated to protecting birdlife.

All expedition staff are subject to change.

DAY 2 - TOUR SANTIAGO – After breakfast at your

hotel, enjoy an Architectural Walking Tour: A Jour-

ney Through a City in Constant Change. This tour is

designed to give a complete overview of the urban

history of Santiago, as well as some of its most im-

(Museo de Bellas Artes, Cerro Santa Lucia, Central

Market and Mapocho) and contemporary buildings

(Centro Cultural Gabriela Mistral, MAVI). During the

walk we will see the union between tradition and

modernity in this bustling city. We will see the for-

mer National Congress and continue to the heart of

Santiago, its Main Square, and the beautiful historic

buildings of the neighborhood. The tour ends at the

Civic Center, with the accumulated history of Palacio

de la Moneda. Lunch will be provided at a local res-

taurant. Remainder of day is free to explore on your

own. (B, L)

DAY 3 – WINE TOUR – On this full day tour you will

visit the Casablanca Valley, the youngest viticulture

area which boasts the perfect trilogy: climate, soil

and vines. You will visit two wineries, with tastings at

both, and have lunch at one.

First visit Vina Casa del Bosque. For many years Juan

Cuneo Solari, an Italian immigrant’s son, dreamed of

having his own vineyards to produce the best quality

wines. In 1993 he discovered the Casablanca Valley

and started his winery. He was one of the first to es-

tablish a family vineyard here. The ancient pine and

olive woods, and the small dispersed and aban-

doned houses, were key factors in determining the

location of the vineyards and the manor house, giv-

ing the name Casa del Bosques – or House of the

Woods. Being a boutique winery producing just

75,000 cases per year enables the wine makers to

concentrate on producing the best quality possible.

Over 80% of the vineyards production is exported to

the most demanding overseas markets. They pro-

duce Chardonnay, Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc, Syrah,

Pinot Noir, Merlot, Carmenere, and Cabernet Sauvi-

gnon. Enjoy wine tasting.

Next we visit Vina Matetic located in nearby San An-

tonio Valley. The story of the Matetic vineyard be-

gins in 1999 when the Matetic family decided to di-

versify their business ventures and enter the world

confident in the climate and soils of the area. The

family brought together a professional team of ex-

perts to ensure the Matetic wines achieve the high-

est quality possible. Enjoy tasting their wines - Char-

donnay, Pinot Noir, Sauvignon Blanc, Syrah,

Gewurztraminer and Riesling. Lunch will be at the

winery’s restaurant, Equilibrio. Return to your hotel.

logical significance, and endangered species, it was

declared a UNESCO World Heritage Monument in

1981. Perito Moreno Glacier is the main attraction.

Icebergs calve from the face with a roar, revealing

vivid blue ice. Once in the park you will board a boat

to cruise across Lago Argentino, where you will en-

11-DAYS/10-NIGHTS

ITINERARY-

DAY 1 - ARRIVE SANTIAGO – meet and transfer to

your award-winning boutique hotel. Remainder of

day is free to unwind and acclimate.

DAY 2 - TOUR SANTIAGO – After breakfast at your

hotel, enjoy an Architectural Walking Tour: A Jour-

ney Through a City in Constant Change. This tour is

designed to give a complete overview of the urban

history of Santiago, as well as some of its most im-

portant architectural landmarks, both historical

(Museo de Bellas Artes, Cerro Santa Lucia, Central

Market and Mapocho) and contemporary buildings

(Centro Cultural Gabriela Mistral, MAVI). During the

walk we will see the union between tradition and

modernity in this bustling city. We will see the for-

mer National Congress and continue to the heart of

Santiago, its Main Square, and the beautiful historic

buildings of the neighborhood. The tour ends at the

Civic Center, with the accumulated history of Palacio

de la Moneda. Lunch will be provided at a local res-

taurant. Remainder of day is free to explore on your

own. (B, L)

DAY 3 – WINE TOUR – On this full day tour you will

visit the Casablanca Valley, the youngest viticulture

area which boasts the perfect trilogy: climate, soil

and vines. You will visit two wineries, with tastings

at both, and have lunch at one.

First visit Vina Casa del Bosque. For many years Juan

Cuneo Solari, an Italian immigrant’s son, dreamed of

having his own vineyards to produce the best quality

wines. In 1993 he discovered the Casablanca Valley

and started his winery. He was one of the first to

establish a family vineyard here. The ancient pine

and olive woods, and the small dispersed and aban-

doned houses, were key factors in determining the

location of the vineyards and the manor house, giing

the name Casa del Bosques – or Houses of the

Woods. Being a boutique winery producing just

75,000 cases per year enables the wine makers to

concentrate on producing the best quality possible.

Over 80% of the vineyards production is exported to

the most demanding overseas markets. They pro-

duce Chardonnay, Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc, Syrah,

Pinot Noir, Merlot, Carmenere, and Cabernet Sauvi-

gnon. Enjoy wine tasting.

perts to ensure the Matetic wines achieve the high-

est quality possible. Enjoy tasting their wines - Char-

to success in Antarctica. The Expedition

Team sets the voyage route to take ad-

Baggage allowance

The maximum weight allowed on the flights to and from Antarctica is 20 kg per passenger, including hand

luggage. Exceeding luggage will be kept in custody by ANTARCTICA XXI and will be returned to passengers

upon their return from Antarctica at Punta Arenas.

Medical insurance Explor Cruises requires participants to be adequately covered by a medical insurance, in-

cluding aero-medical evacuation from Antarctica.

Travel Insurance EXPLOR CRUISES strongly urges participants to be adequately covered by travel insurance,

including emergency evacuation. Either Travel Guard Silver ($150,000 Emergency Evacuation Limit, upgrade-

able to $300,000) or Gold ($500,000 Emergency Evacuation Limit, upgradable to $1 million) Plan is recom-

mended. These plans also cover cancellation charges for covered reasons, financial risk coverage and other

coverages.

Participation Form Passengers are required to fill and sign an on-line Participation Form, and to return it to

EXPLOR CRUISES duly filled at least 120 days prior to departure (see www.mytrip-xxi.com).

Itinerary Every effort will be made to adhere to the planned program. However, it must be realized that with

this type of adventurous travel to Antarctica, changes to the itinerary may occur due to severe and unpredict-

able weather. We need to emphasize the fact that weather conditions are unpredictable and that safety is

always the paramount concern on any Antarctic voyage. For this reason ANTARCTICA XXI reserves the right to

change the itinerary here described due to weather conditions or other factors beyond ANTARCTICA XXI’s

control without consulting the participants.

Flight connections A tight time-schedule connection with an Antarctic expedition is unwise. For this reason,

EXPLOR CRUISES arranges for pre– and post tour arrangements which can be modified or shortened in event

of weather delay lasting a full day or longer.

Contingency Plan In case that the flight to or from Antarctica cannot take place due to unfavorable weather

conditions either at point of origin and/or destination, ANTARCTICA XXI will apply the Contingency Plan cor-

responding to each voyage.
