NEWSLETTER FEBRUARY 2012 PMI Netherlands Chapter | Postbus 90261 | 1006 BG Amsterdam - Vakvereniging voor Project-, Programma- en Portfoliomanagers www.PMI-Netherlands-Chapter.org Learn, share, network! On January 31st we had our Annual Meeting. Great to have some 120 members and non member participating in the Annual Meeting and “value of PMO”. Great that we also announced the start up of the Local Interest Working group on PMO. More on this elsewhere in this newsletter. Sparkling to start 2012 with a 4th LIWg. We would like to see even more LIWg’s this year as these are the member platforms to learn, share and network. As we learned from the annual survey those three words express precisely why we are chapter members. Will your be the leader of the 5th LIWg? There is a growing interest from companies in the PMI standards and accreditations. Every company nowadays is strongly connected to an international network and looking for an universal PM language. That is precisely what differentiates us from others like IPMA and Prince2. There is no right or wrong here, but with 371.575 PMI members worldwide (statistics dec’11) that have the same interest, speak the same PM language and share their PM practices, we are truly global. Like Anthony Ayivi from Ghana, our 750th member. It simply underlines that we are truly global. During the annual meeting we showed a healthy financial position and growing chapter maturity. So besides our external focus on brand awareness, attracting more members and companies, we are working on reinforcing the chapter fundaments as that supports growth. We learn, share and network with fellow chapters to practice proudly stolen elsewhere…. We couldn’t do all this without the support of our chapter sponsors and the companies that host our events. Thank you for enabling us to learn, share and network Looking forward to co-operate with your this year again. Please visit our sponsors websites to see what they have to offer. Finally I would like to thank Jan Vermeijs, Pieter van der Knaap and Rommert Stellingwerf for their significant contribution to the board and chapter. Without their volunteer effort we would not be this healthy and sparkling. A warm welcome also to the new board members Henk van de Walle (treasurer), Loes Kalkman (Education) and Remco de Jong (Communication). Check their profiles on our website. I wish ourselves a marvelous 2012 with lots of Project Management fun and experience. Let’s not forget to tell our friends, colleagues and companies that we are doing great. They can easily be part of this! Cees Pijs - President of the PMI Netherlands Chapter

NEWSLETTER FEBRUARY 2012

In June 2011 I have decided to enroll to the process of getting the newly established PMI certificate, the PMI-ACP® (Agile Certified Practitioner) pilot. There were several reasons for making that decision: at first, I do believe that the project management profession is evolving into a new realm of requirements and compliance with the changing world where the traditional project management knowledge and skills are not sufficient to make the difference, secondly, I was curious to see how the PMI will leverage the Agile founding fathers’ mantra that being Agile would never require a certification in order to act Agile, and finally, I have done a certain number of Agile projects and, during the years of my working practice, I used to apply some of the approaches which later on I recognized as being Agile.

As far as I remembered correctly, the PMI commenced with the Agile in 2007 at the PMI EMEA Congress. I still recall the reaction of the PMs sitting there and their concerns about the new approaches. Less than five years later, I think the situation with adopting Agile is far different.

The process of PMI-ACP® is divided into the stages of the candidate’s application, eligibility for the exam, audit process, the exam itself and review in the form of a questionnaire. The eligibility process examines the candidate’s attained education, Agile project experiences, and Agile education. I’ve learned that the reviewing process was thorough having feedback information provided to the application processor on additional

explanation on projects descriptions and Agile education. The audit process is going through the verification of the categories of general PM experience, Agile project experience (3 projects) and (at least) 21 hours of Agile PM education, including course syllabus so that the auditor can see what Agile topics those courses covered. Once when the process is done and the candidate meets the requirements of PMI's audit, it is possible to schedule the certification examination.

The PMI’s tips on preparing the examination include reviewing the PMI-ACP® certification handbook, reading the current reference list for the PMI-ACP® certification, enrolling in a formal study course offered by PMI chapters or R.E.P.s, and forming a study group with colleagues or friends (in person or virtually).

In my preparation for the exam, as a guideline I’ve used the PMI-ACP® Examination Content Outline – July 2011. The booklet outlines the examination structure, and domains and tools required. I suggest using that booklet as a basic tasks board in your learning retrospectives, building incrementally your knowledge around it. Instead of enrolling in a formal study course, I took the route of studying a library of subject area books which are, in my opinion, a paramount in Agile (see below enclosed list of recommended literature).

In my experience the exam was well structured, and for a person with Agile experience very clear. A good part of the exam was focused on Agile tools and techniques, including Agile methods, analysis and design, product quality, soft skills and communication, building empowered and motivated teams, stakeholder values and problem-solving strategies. Agile Manifesto values and principles were included as well. In overall, I think it was a good exam.

Partner at PMO Institute

Developments in the project management field are ongoing. This professional field continuously broadens and becomes profounder. Therefore there is a growing need to extend the attention of project management towards program management, portfolio management and project support (PMO). PMO is an acronym, that is used to describe a Project, Program or Portfolio Management Office.

A PMO is a centralized office, an operation centre, within a business or professional enterprise that enables and supports the execution of multiple projects and programs at the same time in a standard manner. From initiation to completion. A PMO has the aim to achieve an optimum performance for the organization as a whole.

Today, organizations are challenged to be constantly on the move, in transition and to be proactive against the changes in the business environment or society. At the same time organizations run multiple projects and programs, each responding to a different challenge.

Although the existence of a PMO is based largely on project management, its influence goes beyond the project environment. In the business or professional environment, a PMO is the liaison between the business and professional and project participants.

A PMO is a driver for operational excellence and seeks to improve the practices of execution management, organizational governance, and strategic change leadership.

In this light PMI Netherlands Chapter has decided to start a PMO Local Interest workgroup.

On January 31st we have announced the start of a Local Interest workgroup during the Annual meeting and the presentation: The Added Value of PMO.

For this workgroup we are looking for enthusiastic members who are interested to participate and built this workgroup. Our aim is to bring PMO to a higher professional level. Should you have any further questions or if you want to sign up for the workgroup please contact Tjalling Klaucke.
