    DELTA TAU DELTA INTERNATIONAL FRATERNITY

    Celebrating Fraternity andBrotherhood

  • LETTERFROM THE EXECUTIVE VICE PRESIDENT

Funerals, as difficult as theymay be, are nevertheless upliftingto the human spirit.

In a recent 24-hour period Iattended funerals for people who,in the hearts of their sorrowedfamilies and friends, were takenfar too early – a 22-year-old un-dergraduate Delt and the 45-year-old wife of a dear Delt friendof more than 25 years. The stu-dent passed away suddenly; themother of four was taken after apainful 10-month battle withcolon cancer.

Both funerals were well-at-tended and included numerousDelts. More than 30 undergradu-ates drove three hours from theircampus at mid-week to attendthe funeral of their brother. Ob-

serving them comfort his family and eachother was gratifying and truly spoke of wordsDelts know well: “goodness of heart . . . gen-erosity . . . thoughtfulness of others.”

As with Delt Ritual, the various rituals ofour life provide meaning. Attending funeralsand comforting the afflicted is a learned be-havior. Funerals, while never easy, also serveto jar us from our daily routines. Often, theycause us to take stock of our own lives. Dur-ing the celebration of Daniel Bauder’s life, thepriest shared in his homily, “This is an alarmclock, a wake-up call to what is most impor-tant in our life . . . our family, our friends, liv-ing life joyfully.”

At the funeral of Trish Dowell, her hus-band, Tony Dowell, spoke eloquently abouttheir 24 years together. Their love affairstarted late in their college years at a Deltparty with her sorority. Those listening to theremembrance included several men whocame of age in the Delt chapter when Tonywas a two-term president. They were at thesame party, and they came to the weddingwhich followed just a year later. Now at mid-dle age, they traveled from across the Mid-west to be with their friend again. One of themen interrupted his family’s spring breaktrip, flying on short notice from Florida to In-diana, to attend. Bonds made as young mencarry forward through life.

The widower’s remarks came after hischildren, ages 13 to 19, gave their ownpoignant comments about their mother, a vi-brant woman who fought mightily despite agrim diagnosis. Tony concluded his remarksby reassuring their children in a most publicway. “There’s a reason we have two eyes,” hesaid. “If one gets poked out, you can still see.I will be that eye.”

As with that father whose life haschanged forever, we have the opportunity todepend on each other as brothers to cele-brate successes and to help us navigate life’schallenges. That extends far beyond our timein college together. Having been to manyDelt funerals, from students to national pres-idents, it’s clear we treasure and cling tothese friendships. Delta Tau Delta trulyserves as an abiding influence in our lives.

    Brotherhood sustains us.

The 2012 Delta Tau Delta Division Conference Season concluded

in late February after months of preparation and weeks of

celebration by Delts from across the country.

This year’s division conferences saw a record number of under-

graduates, alumni and volunteers, more than 1,200 total, come

together in the name of brotherhood to learn the values associ-

ated with being a Delt while emphasizing the conference’s theme,

    The Inspiration of Maturity.

Josh Schneider named WesternPlains Division President

A highlight during the Western PlainsDivision Conference included the swear-ing in of new Western Plains DivisionPresident Josh Schneider (Texas StateUniversity, 1998) by International Presi-dent Alan Brackett after former divisionpresident Bob Marwill (University ofTexas, 1959) stepped down from his posi-tion to focus on his role as Karnea localcommittee chairman. Schneider willserve as division president through theFebruary 2013 term.

In addition to the many officer posi-tions he held as an undergraduate at ZetaDelta, Schneider has served as a chapteradvisor at Theta Delta Chapter at BaylorUniversity as well as a division vice presi-dent and a house corporation president.

New Look to ConferencesThe division conference curriculum

had a makeover this year. The redesignincluded three areas: developing tracksfor certain officers and leadership skill-building, rewriting the breakout sessions, and inviting more campus-based studentaffairs professionals to participate in theconferences as facilitators. The feedbackhas been very positive and the Fraternitystaff is already working on ways the con-ferences can be further enhanced nextyear.

Every chapter leader needs trainingto be successful in his position. The question is – how should each officer betrained? We posed that question to students and alumni and, based on theirfeedback, it was clear that five officersneeded face-to-face training. Those posi-tions were president, treasurer, recruit-ment, new member educator and Guide.

  • 8 | THE RAINBOW p SPRING 2012

When we looked at division conferenceattendance from the past three years, werealized these officers were not alwaysrepresented and educational program-ming was not always offered for that posi-tion. So the decision was made in June2011 to change the format from all break-out sessions to half breakout session andhalf track programming for the five offi-cers mentioned above, plus a leadershiptrack.

In addition to developing the tracks, the breakout sessions were all rewrittenby alumni and volunteers. The breakout

sessions covered topicsfrom strategic planningto civic engagement.

Each conference alsooffered sessions facilitated by local experts on resume writ-ing, interview skills, eti-quette, proper dressand financial planning.

The last change was the facilitation ofthe tracks. For the past several years, theFraternity has invited campus profession-als and interfraternal colleagues to thePresidents and Advisors Retreat andBethany Leadership Academy. At thoseevents, we have had great success withstrong and seasoned facilitators as theybrought energy, perspective and partner-ships that were valuable for the studentsand the Fraternity. At the 2012 DivisionConferences, all of the tracks, except theGuide track, were facilitated by a Delt anda non-Delt.

Undergraduate members continue totell us they want opportunities to learnfrom each other, more interactive learn-ing and less lectures. The Fraternity staffand volunteers continue to take thatfeedback and cutting-edge educationtechniques to make division conferencesrelevant and valuable experiences forundergraduates.
