MAL M. MOOREA T H L E T I C S D I R E C T O R

The University of Alabama’s Director of Athletics since 1999, Mal Moore has made an indelible mark on one of the nation’s most storied athletic programs, leading a department that has enjoyed tremendous success athletically and academically while enjoying an unprecedented period of growth during his tenure.

Through his guidance, Alabama’s athletic department remains focused on his vision of having all Crimson Tide athletic teams and student-athletes competitive at the highest level nationally while continuing to ele-vate athletic facilities at the Capstone to premier status nationally for all sports.

During his tenure as Director of Athletics, Moore has overseen more than $200 million of capital improvements to University of Alabama athletic facilities. Those projects have encompassed the entire scope of all Crimson Tide athletic programs

constituents, from fellow coaches and former players, to fans and the business com-munity. All of those experiences and relationships - in addition to his ability to unify those many constituents - have made him the ideal person to lead Alabama athletics in the 21st century.

His leadership has been crucial in helping guide Alabama through a period that has been, at times, extremely challenging. His guidance and effort helped Alabama ath-letics weather the storm, while continuing to move in a positive direction toward a future that holds great promise.

Moore’s dedication to, and love of, the University of Alabama was recognized on March 28, 2007, when as a permanent tribute to his lifelong contributions to The University of Alabama, the Board of Trustees of The University of Alabama

the Mal M. Moore Athletic Facility.

Under Moore’s direction, Alabama’s athletic teams have produced three national championships – the 2009 football title and the 2002 and 2011 NCAA gymnastics championships – as well as several Southeastern Conference championships, win-

ning titles in football, gymnastics, men’s basketball, women’s golf, men’s golf, men’s cross country, baseball and softball; taking SEC tournament titles in both baseball and softball. Alabama athletes have earned some of the highest honors the SEC and NCAA have to offer, including SEC Athlete of the Year, SEC Scholar-Athlete of the Year, NCAA Top VIII, NCAA Postgraduate Scholarships and NCAA Sportsperson of the Year. These honors are over and above the individual conference and national titles that Alabama athletes continue to bring home to the Capstone on a regular basis.

In addition to making his mark on Alabama, Moore has also had a national impact as a key member of several prestigious NCAA and college football committees. Moore has served on the NCAA Division I Football Issues Committee, the SEC Athletic Directors Bowl Advisory Committee and the Big Six Conferences Minority Coaches Forum.

Moore’s distinguished record of service to UA began more than 50 years ago when he joined the Crimson Tide football squad as a scholarship player for Coach Paul “Bear” Bryant from 1958-62. Moore has the distinction of being a part of eight national championship teams (1961, 1964, 1965, 1973, 1978, 1979, 1992 and 2009)

most recent during his tenure as director of athletics. As a player and coach, he was also part of 14 SEC championships and 27 bowl trips. He is the only individual connected with the Alabama program to be a part of eight national championships.

During a coaching career that spanned 31 years, Moore spent 22 of those at Ala-bama with stops at Montana State, Notre Dame and the NFL’s St. Louis/Phoenix Cardinals. At Alabama, Moore started as a graduate assistant under Coach Bryant in

starting in 1975. He would go on to coordinate all of the offensive plays for several of Alabama’s national championship football teams.

A 1963 graduate of The University of Alabama, Moore holds both an undergradu-ate degree in sociology and a 1964 Master’s degree in secondary education from the Capstone. Moore was born December 19, 1939, in Dozier, Ala. He and the late Mrs. Charlotte Moore have one daughter, Mrs. Steve (Heather) Cook of Scottsdale, Ariz., a granddaughter, Anna Lee, and a grandson, Charles Cannon.

As president of The University of Alabama, Dr. Robert E. Witt has committed the University to an ambitious plan for academ-ic growth and achievement.

His goals include increasing enrollment by recruiting academi-cally talented students from Alabama and across the country,

Since its inception in 2003, the University’s Honors College has grown exponentially, and cur-rently enrolls more than 1,300 freshmen each year. UA’s loyal alumni and friends continue to provide a high level of support to the University, with private giving having an important im-pact on the University’s ability to fund scholarships, faculty support and construction projects. Prior to joining The University of Alabama in 2003, Dr. Witt spent 35 years as a faculty mem-ber and administrator in the University of Texas System. He received his B.A. in economics from Bates College, his M.B.A. from Tuck School at Dartmouth College, and his Ph.D. from Penn State University. He serves on the boards of directors of the West Alabama Chamber of Commerce, the Black Warrior Council Boy Scouts of America, and the American Cast Iron Pipe Company. He is a member of the Tuscaloosa County Industrial Development Authority.

Coming off a breakout season, it’s obvious that rowing coach Larry Davis, now in his sixth season as the Crimson Tide’s head rowing coach, is in the place where he wants to be, involved with a sport he loves. With a passion for the sport and a strong relationship with the city of Tuscaloosa, Davis is doing exactly what he’s always wanted to.

“I love the sport of rowing and it’s something where I really have a commitment to the Uni-versity and the city of Tuscaloosa,” Davis said. “It makes it easier to do this job when you have student-athletes that are hungry and want to achieve and have that same kind of approach to the sport that you do. I’ve been involved with it a long time, it’s something I love to do, but it makes it easier to love it when you have a bunch of people around you who love it too.”

Now in his 14th year in Tuscaloosa, Davis has been involved in the local rowing community for a vast majority of that time, still getting on the water himself on a regular basis. During that

to the point that the Tide is one of the fast ris-ing teams on the national scene.

“One of the things that I’ve learned over time is that good things take time and you have to put them all in layers and build on the pace and keep building,” Davis said. “The University has been very good about giving us the tools we need on a step-by-step basis to achieve that.”

It’s no easy task taking a club team and building it into a successful, Division-I NCAA program,

have much to be pleased with.

“We want to be one of those sports that represents the University at the highest level,” Davis said. “I think everybody involved with the program feels that way.”

Success has come early and often for Alabama

-gattas it competed in and won a number of races in dual-meet competitions against established programs. At the Dad Vail College Champion-

of its races, unheard of for such a green squad.

The next two seasons saw the Tide continue to make enormous strides forward, including a sil-ver medal at the esteemed Head of the Charles Regatta when the UA Varsity 8+ grabbed second place in the women’s Club race. That spring,

season also saw Alabama take another step in its development when it joined with eight other programs from across the country to make up Conference USA’s rowing contingent.

“One of the things that the team hadn’t had up to that point was the ability to chase a confer-ence championship,” Davis said “It is a great motivator throughout the year, instead of just pushing along and seeing how we do, we’ll have

them.”

Last season saw the Tide take a huge step

the Head of the Charles, followed by a several outstanding performances in the spring.

At the renowned San Diego Crew Classic, Alabama’s First Varsity 8+ took home the gold, winning the SeaWorld Cal Cup. That feat earned Davis’ squad the inaugural Conference USA Boat of the Week honor as well as the Row2K.com Crew of the Week recognition.

The Tide followed that up with a prodigious showing at the SIRA Championships, where Alabama not only repeated as the First Varsity 4+ champions, but added gold in the First Varsity 8+ and the Second Varsity 8+ as well, giving UA a sweep of the open Varsity events.

“Seeing what we’ve been able to accomplish up to this point in time is always a shot in the arm for me to keep excited about what’s going on,” Davis said. “We’re not where we want to be yet but we keep making progress and the students we have associated with the program are buying into what it takes to be a top-level program.”

Not only have Tide rowers seen success on the water, but they have also excelled in the

During his tenure, Davis’ rowers have also made a marked difference in the community, leading the athletic department’s community service efforts in each of the last four years.

Such success for such a young program is noth-ing short of astounding, but it is certainly in line with Davis’ goals when he took the job as Alabama’s inaugural head coach.

“We have a plan, and it’s an aggressive plan, but there’s no doubt in my mind that it’s one that

His plan includes steady, continuous improve-ment in all phases of the program each year and competing for an NCAA Championship

“Starting from almost scratch, to see it move along in a span of really four-plus years, it’s very rewarding to see that kind of growth,” Da-vis said. “We need to realize that we still have a long way to go but there’s so much opportunity here that I can’t see us not achieving the kind of success that I think we’re capable of.”

This success has been part of his vision from day one, Feb. 2, 2006, when after an exhaustive search, the University’s athletics department named Davis as its new rowing coach.

“Larry is well-respected and connected in the rowing community and brings immediate respect to our program,” Alabama Athletics Director Mal Moore said. Davis’ past in rowing spans 40 years, includ-ing 25 as a coach. Before starting the Crimson Tide’s program, he coached the Alabama Crew Club starting in 1998. In addition to his duties with the club team, he has served as the Direc-tor of Wellness and Aquatics at the YMCA of Tuscaloosa County.

Prior to his time in Tuscaloosa, Davis spent 1981-93 at Marist College in Poughkeepsie, N.Y., where he was the head coach of the var-sity crew and served as the school’s compliance

Championship Regatta and the New York State Small College Championships. He was also the head coach of the University of Alabama-Huntsville’s varsity crew from 1977-81.

Davis also spent time with the United States National Team. In 1983, Davis was an assistant coach for the U.S. Men’s Rowing team and later, in 1987, he served as team manager.

In 1983, Team USA competed at the World Championships in Germany and the Pan American Games in Venezuela, with the men’s 8+ winning gold at the Pan Am Games. The 1987 squad made it to the World Champion-ships in Denmark and the men’s 8+ once again won gold.

“I’ve worked with a lot of different programs at a lot of different levels and I try to bring that experience to bear in everything I do, from putting together workouts, to talking with the rowers, to race day,” Davis said.

As an athlete he rowed for Washington-Lee High School in Virginia where he was a mem-ber of the last varsity 8+ to win gold at the Royal Henley Regatta in England.

Davis continued his rowing career at the University of Virginia where he won numer-ous competitions including the Mid-American Championship and the Southern Collegiate Rowing Association Championship. During Davis’ time in Charlottesville, the Cavaliers

-onships three years, earning a bronze medal in 1971.

Davis spent all his undergraduate and graduate years at Virginia, earning a bachelor’s degree in accounting in 1973, followed up by a master’s in counseling in 1977. He is married to the former Vicki Barnes of Madison, Ala.

“Derek brings a wealth of rowing knowledge to our program,” Davis said. “As a Tuscaloosa native and an Alabama graduate, he knows the pride everyone has in the Crimson Tide and he knows the Alabama rowing community. His experience and knowledge help our student-athletes become acclimatized to all phases of the collegiate rowing experience.”

Tuten served as head coach of the Alabama Crew Club prior to joining the Crimson Tide staff in the summer of 2007. As the Alabama Crew’s coach, he led the men to a win at the

S.I.R.A. Championships.

“Derek is an excellent teacher when it comes to rowing,” Davis said. “He brings a balance and patience to the program in terms of how he goes about his coaching. “Having worked with Coach Davis in the past with great success, I was excited about the op-portunity to do so again at the Division I level,” Tuten said. “With the university’s dedication to athletics and academics, I know this program will succeed.”

Tuten was a four-year member of the Alabama Crew Club while pursuing a Psychology degree at Alabama. He also rowed for the Riverside Boat Club and Community Rowing in Boston, one of the nation’s top cities for competitive rowing.

As a competitor, Tuten rowed at the U.S. Row-ing National Championships as well as the C.R.A.S.H. – B Sprints World Indoor Champion-ships. She served as an assistant coach for the Oxford University Women’s Boat Club from 2006-2009 where her record coaching the junior varsity was 2-1 for the Reserves Race. During that time, she was also the men’s and women’s coach for St. Hugh’s College Boat Club.

There is little doubt that Laura Buckalew, now in her second year as the Crimson Tide’s graduate assistant coach, knows something about rowing. After all, in addition to rowing for the University of Charleston in West Virginia, Buckalew also grew up around the sport thanks to her father, Jim, who worked for the United States Rowing Association and is the coach at Charleston. “Growing up, my dad was always putting on regattas, coaching them and working as a referee,” Buckalew said. The Charleston, W.Va., native graduated from UC in 2010 with a double major in business administration and sports administration. Buckalew is putting both her rowing back-ground and her degrees in administration to work in her role with the Tide. She is charged with the day-to-day details of keeping the program running smoothly, taking care of travel arrangements, paper work and the like while also lending a hand with coaching as well.

In addition to rowing for Charleston, she also was a four-year letter winner on the Golden Eagles volleyball team. As a sophomore she helped lead UC to the West Virginia Intercolle-giate Athletic Conference Volleyball tournament title. As a junior she was fourth in the conference in blocks. As a senior she served as the volleyball team’s co-captain. She also served as co-captain of the rowing team at UC as a senior. 2011-12 ALABAMA ROWING OUTLOOK

Alabama comes into the 2011-12 season having to replace several key members of last year’s highly successful varsity squad, including Alissa Kranz, who became just the second UA rower to earn a place on the CRCA All-South Region team, as well as Laura Skaggs, one of last

to the All-Conference USA team. Alabama is also missing Jessie Allaway, who earned the SEC Community Service Award last season, from the First V8+. All three women were mainstays of the last year’s First Varsity 8+ boat and will be sorely missed. Despite those losses, the Tide returns a solid base of talented and experienced veterans who will be looking to continue Alabama’s climb up the conference, regional and national ladder. Coxswain Paige Storey, the “quarterback” of the First V8 the last two seasons is back for her senior season, as are senior Bianca Arrington and juniors Mariah Styer and Jessica Parker. Also back from last year’s Cal Cup winning First V8 is senior captain Kristen Iverson who will bring solid leadership to the entire team again this season. Alabama also returns nearly the entire Sec-ond Varsity 8+ from last year, including seniors Audrey White, Leigh Ann Terch and Erika Baranek, juniors Kiffy Balchon and Tabitha Coleman as well as sophomores Brianne Hadar, Lynsey Marshall and Hannah Merrill. All of

vacant seats in the First V8 boat.

Larry Davis’ squad also returns three mem-bers of the two-time SIRA Champion First Varsity 4+ including seniors Emily LeBeau and Stephanie Varner and junior Kendall Williamson. Sydney Sutton, who rowed on the Tide’s Second Varsity 4+, is back for her junior year. There are three members of last year’s Nov-ice boats who made the move up to the Varsity crews this year – Bethany Bell, Bernadette Bucher and Kelli O’Brien, all of whom will be pushing for spots in the upper boat lineups. In addition to the 20 veterans of the Tide’s 2010-11 Varsity or Novice crews returning this year, Davis and company have added 16 newcomers, including 15 true freshmen. The 16 Tide rookies make up the largest recruited pool of athletes in Alabama’s short history and all are looking for their chance to make the Varsity

-nal competition this season. This group does not include the slew of walk-ons that will join Novice roster in the fall which will be made up almost entirely of UA students with no rowing experience, but the athletic ability to make the transition to NCAA Division I athlete. For Davis and assistant coaches Derek Tuten,

attempting to improve on last year’s breakout performance by continuing to focus on the things that led to that step forward last season. “The theme that we established for this year is sort of a continuation of that professionalism we worked on last year,” Davis said. “We want

our ladies to concentrate on living the life of a champion. That goes beyond just working hard in practice and giving it your all on race day. As a team we have to understand what it takes in terms of getting the proper rest, the proper nutrition, balancing everything with academ-ics – basically making the right decisions on a day-to-day basis that allows you to function at a high level.” “If we can do that, we may have a leg up on programs with more talent and experience than we do,” Davis said. “To do that, to be successful against teams that may be ahead of us in terms of talent and experience, we have to be at 100 percent; we can’t go out and row a B level race, we have to bring out our A race every time. I think the girls coming back understand that, now we just need to make sure the freshmen under-stand that.” The Tide’s fall season gets underway in Octo-ber and will feature three events. Two of those, the Head of Chattanooga and the Head of the Chattahoochee will be held in Chattanooga, Tenn. while the third, the prestigious Head of the Charles, will be held in Cambridge, Mass. Alabama’s spring schedule gets under way on St. Patrick’s Day with the Oak Ridge Regatta in Oak Ridge, Tenn. and stretches until May with the Conference USA Championships May 12-13, which will also be held in Oak Ridge.

The Black Warrior River was the scene for the historic inception of Crimson Tide Rowing in October, 2005. As Athletics Director Mal Moore stood on the river’s bank, he announced the addition of row-ing to the varsity lineup - a sport that spent almost two decades of growth in the Tuscaloosa area. Moore, accompanied by Univer-sity President Robert E. Witt, made

next level. With the scenic river behind them, rowing had just become the 21st varsity sport at the University of Alabama.

THE FOUNDATION For over 20-plus years the sport of rowing had been growing in the Tuscaloosa community and with rowing’s popularity growing on the national scene, it almost seemed like a varsity team had not come soon enough.

At the Capstone, club rowing began in 1987, mainly as a social club with the intentions of going out and having fun, seeing little to no competition from other schools. At the beginning, rowing at Alabama was no different than racquetball or rugby – among team members there was no rowing experience or real desire to succeed on the water. Then came a change when, in 1997, a few athletes with rowing experience joined the club squad, bringing with them a desire for change. The team adopted a more competitive attitude, spending more time practicing. Also during this transition the team began fund-raising more than ever. In 1998, Larry Davis and wife, Vicki, moved to Tuscaloosa so she could take on a new job, leaving the former rowing coach looking for local work. That’s when news of the University’s co-ed club rowing

program in need of a coach came to light. Coaching rowing at a major university seemed like a comfort-

of Virginia rower. In January 1998, Davis was introduced as the team’s volunteer coach. “Like any club that has never been organized or supervised, there was a learning curve,” Davis said. “Many of them had never been in a competitive sport before.” In the meantime, Marie Robbins and others in the athletics depart-ment at Alabama were having dis-cussions about adding a 21st varsity sport. There were a number of can-

the senior women’s administrator, could not get past the stories she was hearing about a successful club that was making the best of their limited resources a little way up the Black Warrior River. “We started to delve into the issue about 2003,” Robbins said. “We began to talk about the op-portunity to add an additional sport for women and provide additional participants the opportunity to compete.”

THE COACH At the time of the varsity promotion, Davis was working as Director of Wellness and Aquatics at the Tuscaloosa YMCA, adding more to work to his already busy schedule with the duties he had taken over as the club rowing coach. During his time with the club, Davis turned rowing into a grassroots success on campus and had built up a team that was bringing home nu-merous medals, as well as back-to-back points trophies at the Augusta Invitational in Augusta, Ga., with nothing more than a collective group of college students who had only recently become interested in the sport. With a program and sport already in mind, it seemed natural to Robbins and those at the University to bring up the program’s coach as well. “We looked at a lot of coaches internally and externally and ultimately at the end of the day we decided that coach Davis, in terms of local knowledge and familiar-ity of the club program and local operation of the river also had a

wealth of collegiate experience under his belt,” Robbins said. “For coach [Mal] Moore, Larry’s loyalty to the university was helpful in that for 10 years he worked in addition to his paid job to volunteer and coach these young ladies who had come out for the club team.” Davis’ resume included head coaching jobs at Marist College and the University of Alabama-Huntsville as well as an assistant coaching spot on the 1983 U.S. Men’s National Rowing Team. As of February 2006, Davis would be able to add one more school to that already impressive list. For a school with little experi-ence in rowing, Robbins said, a seasoned coach like Larry Davis was the obvious answer. “I think with Coach Davis it’s local knowledge,” she said. “Having been here for 10 years helps those of us with less knowledge about the sport.”

YEAR ONE The transition from club to NCAA Division I proved challeng-ing. The team was forced to move on without former club athletes who could not adjust to the com-mitment necessary to varsity-level rowing. Davis set up a challenging

transition. The schedule included competitions against notable Division-I crews such as Notre Dame, Cincinnati and two schools that had previously beaten Alabama, Murray State and Creighton.

schedule,” Davis said, “but there were some teams I thought we could beat.” And to the surprise of many in collegiate rowing, they did. The Tide defeated past foes Murray State and Creighton, in addition to coming from behind to beat the Bearcats of Cincinnati. They medaled in all four events at the Head of the South Regatta, winning two of them. Alabama beat schools like North Carolina and Duke while giving Notre Dame a bit of a scare, holding close to them in a couple of events. Success came quickly to the

There were other challenges as well. “The biggest challenge is at-titude,” Davis said. “When you’re dealing with walk-ons, I think a lot of people don’t understand the sport and how much hard work is involved. When you take somebody who’s used to a club mentality, the varsity level is much more intense. It takes athletes who are driven, dedicated and committed. It takes a lot of hard work, focus, discipline

In their second race of the season, the squad split up with the varsity girls heading to Cambridge Mass., for the prestigious Head of the Charles Regatta and the novice girls heading to Huntsville, Ala., for the Hobbs Island Regatta. exceptionally well, bringing home three medals - a bronze, silver and gold - at the Head of the Hooch Regatta. As the spring season got under way, Alabama made major strides, achieving success in meets against the likes of Clemson, Kansas State, Tennessee, North Carolina and Southern Methodist. The success against these established crews pro-pelled the team to the postseason, earning two Grand Final berths at the SIRA Championship Regatta. It was probably a little frustrating for the girls because we were going faster but we weren’t seeing some of the wins that we saw the year before because we were now rowing a lot of the top-20 teams in the United States.” Academically, nine rowers earned the Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association Scholar-Athlete Award and 24 UA rowers earned a place on the Southeastern Conference Academic Honor Roll.

Other classroom accolades included 11 rowers, the most of any team in the nation, earning Col-legiate Rowing Coaches Association Scholar-Athlete Award. A program-best 27 UA rowers earned a place on the Southeastern Conference Academic Honor Roll.

YEAR FIVE The Crimson Tide started its second four-year cycle with a bang, winning top honors at a national regatta and taking home a trio of gold medals from the Southern Intercollegiate Rowing Association Championships. “I think last year was a huge step forward for us,” head coach Larry Davis said. “It was big in terms of knowing what it takes to be com-petitive and then being able go out and execute it. I think in the past we might have had an idea of what it

took to be successful, but last year

“As a program, it is important to us, that our student-athletes excel in all areas of the colle-giate experience,” head coach Larry Davis said. “We want them to be at their best athletically and academically, but more than that, we want them to understand and embrace the concept of being active and positive members of their community. I am very pleased with how our ladies have responded to that challenge and the work they do in the University and Tuscaloosa community.” Over the last four years, when the UA Athletics Department has singled out individual student-athletes for their work in the commu-nity, the rowing team has again led the way. In

2010, six student-athletes were honored with the Community Outreach award, given annually to the student-athletes with the highest overall service hours, and half that number, Tacoma Morrisey, Jessica Autrey and Erika Baranek, came from rowing team. During the 2008-09 school year 10 student-athletes were honored for their work in the community, including four rowers - Amy Alli-son, Autrey, Baranek and Katie Smith. In 2007-08, two rowers, Amy Alison and Katie Tippey were among the six Tide athletes honored with the Tide’s Community Outreach award. said after the race. “The Varsity 8+ dug down a little deeper and did what they were capable of doing. They made a really good move about midway through the race, pulling ahead, and really pushed through the third 500.” Following its success at the San Diego Crew Classic, Alabama’s Varsity 8+ was named the inaugural Conference USA Boat of the Week as well as Row2K.com’s Crew of the Week. The Tide followed up that stellar performance with an outstanding showing at the SIRA Championships. In 2010, Alabama took home its

-pionships when it won the Varsity 4+. This season, in the midst of rough weather conditions, Alabama not only repeated as the Varsity 4+ champions, but also brought home gold in the Varsity 8+ as well as the Second Varsity 8+. “To sweep all the Varsity Open races is a really big step forward for our program,” Davis said after SIRAs. “In general there aren’t too many programs that have done that, so we were pretty happy with that.” The Tide was looking forward to carrying its success into the Conference USA Championships, but the tornado that ripped through Tuscaloosa on April 27th cut the academic semester and the rowing

team’s season short, trimming a dual meet with Clemson and the Tide’s second appearance at the C-USA Championships from Alabama’s schedule. “We were certainly disappointed to not be able to carry our success into the postseason, but it was still a very good year for us,” Davis said. “To be able to go and travel across the country and compete at a very high level against teams that are making it to the NCAAs, and to turn around and not only win one race but the three open champion-ship races for varsity women at the SIRA Championships, shows that we learned how to execute in a high pressure situation at a high level.” Senior Alissa Kranz earned All-Conference USA honors and became just the second UA rower to earn CRCA All-South Region honors. On the academic side of the ledger, Alabama is the only team to put three rowers on the Conference USA All-Academic Team each of

when senior Jessica Allaway, Kranz and junior Stephanie Varner came away with the honor in 2011. Other classroom accolades included eight rowers earning Col-legiate Rowing Coaches Association Scholar-Athlete Award. In addition, 17 UA rowers earned a place on the Southeastern Conference Academic Honor Roll. Allaway also earned the Brad Davis SEC Community Service Award, which earned her a $3000 postgraduate scholarship while the rowing team won the athletic de-partment’s community service award

for the fourth year in a row. MOVING FORWARD As the team continues to make a name for itself, recruiting will con-tinue to play a large factor in achiev-ing success. The coaches know that success does not always come quickly, but with time and patience all the hard work can pay off. It is a process of sorts that has helped such a young program blossom into a legitimate contender. “What we tell recruits is that they can have a bigger impact here,” Davis said. “But they have to have the patience and insight to make things happen, and they have to want to be a leader. They’re not just

help make that group and build the tradition.” For those that join the Tide, the challenge is to never rest, to never slow down, to keep the success roll-

ing along to ever higher levels. “As a team we are learning how to work at this level,” Davis said. “We are learning how to not only train extremely hard, but to also do that over a sustained period of time. The challenge is to get this team to a point where it is ready to compete at the highest level. Each new group has to realize that we can’t be satis-

get to where we want to go.” For the Tide, success is not measured by each individual race

comes from a consistency and dedication that begins in the weight rooms and on the water at practice and is carried over to race day. Consistency is continually winning medals when no one expects you to. Consistency is Alabama Rowing.

-joyed the all the amenities of the 20 other Crim-son Tide athletic programs - top notch staff and equipment and access to UA’s state-of-the-art Academic center, training room and weight room, along with many other aspects of the student-athlete experience that makes competing for the Tide such an extraordinary experience. The one thing that Alabama Rowing didn’t have that the other Tide teams did, was confer-ence competition. In the Southeastern Confer-ence, where the rest of the Tide’s teams com-pete, there is only one other team, Tennessee, that sponsors rowing on an NCAA Division I level. And while the Tide and Lady Vols do have a growing rivalry, it’s not the same as competing in a fully developed conference. That changed in 2010, when Alabama, in just its fourth year as an NCAA Division I program, joined a rowing “super conference” and com-

“This is a great step for our program,” head coach Larry Davis said. “Everybody on the team is excited about the idea, and certainly the coach-ing staff is excited about the idea.” Alabama and Tennessee along with Big 12 schools Texas, Kansas, Kansas State and

member schools SMU, Tulsa and Central Florida to compete under the Conference USA banner. “I think it’s a good strong group,” Davis said. “You’ve got some teams who have been in the NCAA before: Tennessee, Central Florida and Texas have gotten there before. As far as teams that are in the mix right now for NCAA slots, Tennessee is a strong contender and some of the other schools are close, Texas and Central Florida for example.” The Tide and the eight other teams com-peted for conference titles May 15-16, 2010 at Melton Hill Lake in Oak Ridge, Tenn. where the

All-Conference USA honors. Last season, the Tide did not compete at the conference champi-onships following the aftermath of the tornado that tore through Tuscaloosa and, while leaving the team safe and largely unaffected, did cut short its season. For her body of work during the regular season, Alissa Kranz was named the 2011 All-Conference USA Team. One reason for the move is that the NCAA

-matic bids to select conferences in 2013. Joining C-USA gives not only a shot at an automatic NCAA bid, but a strong base of competition year-in and year-out. Of the nine Conference USA rowing pro-grams seven are over 10 years old, though none have clocked over 20 years. Only Alabama and Oklahoma have yet to see their sixth season. All nine are considered strong programs on the upswing.

goes beyond a shot at an NCAA Championship automatic bid and into the drive and competi-tion that conference competition brings for a program, the built in rivalries and the focus that goes into a season. “It gives us an ability to focus,” Davis said. “We have something to shoot for. Before, we didn’t really have a true championship at the end of the season to shoot for. With some other things that will be changing with NCAA Rowing, there are going to be some other opportunities in the coming years where if you win your con-ference championship, you will get an automatic

league.” Alabama is keeping its eye on the prize of not only having a chance to advance to the NCAA Championships, but also bring home conference gold and a trophy for the boathouse. “It is a really big step to have the ability to win the conference with some of the teams that are in there and have an opportunity to get a boat to the NCAAs,” Davis said. “It gives us a venue to focus our energy on, but it also gives us the ability to focus on something and know what we have to do to achieve that kind of excel-lence.”

For coach Larry Davis the goal is simple. He wants his student-athletes to leave Alabama with medals around their neck and a diploma under their arm. Success, by that criteria, as been im-mediate for the rowing program. In 2010, Alabama led the nation last in Col-legiate Rowing Coaches Association Scholar Athlete awards in 2010, with a program-high 11 Crimson Tide rowers earning the honor, tying UA with Brown University for the national lead. “One thing that we have laid as a foundation for this program is to be the absolute best in all areas, athletically and academically,” Davis said. “To lead the nation in this award speaks volumes about the commitment placed on academics at the University of Alabama. It also shows that as we improve on the water, our dedication to academics hasn’t wavered in the slightest.” To earn CRCA honor a rower must hold a 3.5 grade point average for her career, be at least a sophomore in eligibility, and have competed in 75-percent of the team’s spring races.

Division I program, 25 Tide rowers have earned a total of 44 CRCA Scholar Athlete honors, including eight last season. On a conference level, Alabama’s rowers have been named to the Southeastern Confer-ence Academic Honor Roll 93 times, including an amazing 27 who made the list in 2010.

rower to earn a place on the prestigious ESPN the Magazine/CoSIDA Academic All-District

At-Large second team, an award that spans several NCAA Division I sports. Last season, for the second year in a row, Alabama led the Conference USA All-Academic Team with three selections on the 15-member team. Six student-athletes, including the Ala-bama trio of Jessica Allaway, Alissa Kranz and Stephanie Varner, were unanimous selections to the All-Academic squad. The Tide now has four unanimous selections, with 2010 senior Kath-erine Spohr earning the honor last year. Stacey Ogle and Bailey Sanders, both seniors in 2010, were also members of the inaugural squad. Alabama now leads C-USA with the most members in the award’s two-year history, totaling six different student-athletes. To make the ballot for the C-USA all-academic team, a rower has to have earned a 3.2 cumulative grade point average or better and is a key contributor to their team. The team is then elected by the league’s sports information direc-tors for rowing. The secret behind the academic success for Tide student-athletes is really no secret at all. Alabama’s Center of Athletic Student Services, located in the state-of-the-art Paul W. Bryant Academic Center, stands ready to help Tide student-athletes get the most out of their

universities. CASS is headed by Assistant Athletics Director for Student Services Jon Dever. Dever

is assisted by Tyler Roberts, rowing’s academic advisors, as well as Stephanie Godfrey, Heather Anders, Tom Buttram, Barbara DeLaire, Brenda Elliott, Fern Hampton, Jason Johns, Jill Lan-caster, Lisa Patrick and Lance Walker. Joining this group are six interns and 65 part-time tutors. The entire operation is housed in the Bryant Hall Academic Center. The CASS staff works as a liaison between the Athletic Department, undergraduate divi-

Capstone, freshmen and junior college transfers are required to attend nightly study halls. After that, the attendance is based on the individual’s GPA and study needs. The dedicated CASS staff can only give guidance and direction. Achievement is left in the hands of the student-athlete. If the athlete wishes to succeed in the classroom as they do in competition, then Alabama’s CASS will provide them with every opportunity to achieve the high-est goals.

The Bill Battle Academic Center at Paul W. Bryant Hall is the crown jewel in Alabama’s $125 million Crimson Tradition building initiative. Through the auspices of the Crimson Tradition Fund, Alabama took its former athletic dorm and converted it into a 55,000-square foot state-of-the-art facility that

Among the building’s many amenities is a 48-seat computer lab with brand new equipment. The computer lab also houses 25 laptop computers that can be checked out by student-athletes for use on road trips. There are math, English and writing labs as well as individual study rooms. The athletic aca-

The classrooms have cutting edge teaching devices, including digital overhead projectors and “smart boards” that allow instructors to interact with students on the go. Throughout the building there are 16 information stations that provide student-athletes with news about tutorials, study sessions and even practice schedules.

It is one of the best practice and competitive courses in the nation, giving the University of Alabama’s young rowing team an immediate boost. The Black Warrior River, where the Crimson Tide practices and competes, has high banks, long, pro-tected straightaways, and minimal current which

from having the river largely to itself. Alabama is also fortunate that the river is dotted with prime viewing areas for dual meets and regattas, including The Park at Manderson

the Tide’s home events. With its multi-tiered slope down to the edge of the river, the park is a natural ‘stadium’ for cheering on the Crimson Tide. Already endowed with one of the nation’s top competition and practice venues in the Black War-rior River, plans are underway to build a state-of-the-art boathouse for the University of Alabama Rowing program that will encompass everything the Tide needs to continue to move up through the ranks of collegiate rowing. Another step to-ward that new facility was taken when the land for the new boathouse was acquired last year.

When completed, the planned boathouse is projected to include a walking bridge that will connect the facility to campus, as well as space for a restaurant, multiple bays for the Tide’s shells, as well as locker room, meetings spaces and coaches’

The new boathouse will combine with the Tide’s already stellar athletic training, strength and conditioning and academic facilities in providing Alabama rowers with the best of all things.

Rowing is burst after burst of concentrated power —directed by the coxswain—expended by each rower in unison with the sole intent of taking the shell down the water faster than ever before. The focus each member of the boat, and the crew as a whole, must be abso-lute and intense. The effort at key points in the race must reach new levels of intensity for the crew to be at its best in any given race.

Racing demands a mind-over-matter determination that is present in all great athletes. In rowing, the key

ultimate team sport with success coming only when each member of the crew acts in concert, bringing everything to bear, together, to make the boat go faster than ever before. The goals must be universal and the determination among each athlete equal.
