The 2012 Ohio State University football spring drills – 15 practices starting March 28, including the LiFE Sports Spring Game April 21 – kick off a couple of historic notes for the football program, which will play its 123rd season this fall:

1. The practices will mark the fi rst opportunity for head coach Urban Meyer and his staff, featuring six new assistant coaches and three retained from the previous staff, to work on football drills and skills after seeing only conditioning and training exercises since Meyer took sole leadership of the program Jan. 3; and

2. Spring drills will also signify the start of Ohio State’s 100th season of football in the Big Ten Conference. Ohio State joined the former Western Conference during the 1912-13 academic year, but could not compete in the conference in football until 1913.

The drills will give the Buckeye players an opportunity to see, hear and feel football on the playing/practice fi elds under the direction of their new coach, who knows how to win and who knows how to build championship teams. Meyer’s .819 winning percentage is tenth-best in major college history all-time, and it is the second-best among current coaches, and he already has two national championships to his credit: the 2006 and 2008 national titles with the University of Florida.

“As intense as the off-season conditioning drills have been, the spring drills will be even more intense,” senior fullback Zach Boren said. “There is no on-off switch. Everyone will be going full-go every play. It is going to be a physical spring with everyone putting everything on the line.”

Returning senior and 2011 team captain John Simon is in agreement with Boren.

“It is going to be an intense spring drills,” said Simon. “Everyone got bigger, faster and stronger in the off-season. The entire team is ready to go. We all want to prove ourselves in front of the new coaching staff. We’re all excited to see what we can do in all phases: offense, defense and special teams.”

Meyer has mentioned on several occasions how eager he is for March 28 to arrive and to be able to see what these players can do on the football fi eld.

“I am excited to see our presents,” Meyer has said, using the analogy of a gift about to be opened with a fi rst look at his players on the fi eld. “I don’t really know what we have in terms of players, yet. I made a point not to look at fi lm of last year because I wanted everyone to be able to start with a clean slate.”

What Meyer will, or will not, see in terms of numbers when he assembles his 95 players on the practice fi elds this spring will be:

• A senior class comprised of 21 individuals;

• 48 lettermen returning off the 2011 team (25 on offense, 20 on defense and three specialists);

• 24 departed lettermen (10 on offense, 12 on defense and two specialists);

• 18 returning starters, including nine on defense (DL John Simon, DT Johnathan Hankins, NG Garrett Goebel, DT Adam Bellamy, LB Storm Klein, CB Travis Howard, CB Bradley Roby, SAF Christian Bryant, SAF C.J. Barnett) and seven on offense (QB Braxton Miller, FB Zach Boren, WR Corey Brown, WR Chris Fields, OG Jack Mewhort, OG Andrew Norwell, TE Jake Stoneburner);

• The return of both kickers – K Drew Basil and P Ben Buchanan – and long snapper George Makridis;

• Six departed starters, including offensive linemen Mike Brewster, Mike Adams and J.B. Shugarts, and running back Dan Herron. Defensive starters gone are safety Tyler Moeller and linebacker Andrew Sweat; and

• Nine true freshmen from the 2012 recruiting class who have/will have enrolled by the start of spring drills (winter quarter enrollees OL Jacoby Boren, RB Bri’onte Dunn, QB Cardale Jones, LB Josh Perry, DB Tyvis Powell and WR Michael Thomas, and spring enrollees OT Taylor Decker, DL Se’Von Pittman and LB Luke Roberts).

QUOTING COACH MEYERWINTER CONDITIONING“We take great pride in our off-season program. In our very strong opinion, championships are won in the off-season. I would grade ourselves as a plus. We had a very good off-season. The team looks a lot different to me, especially the offensive line. I was very disappointed in some body types that were here, and a lot of those bodies have changed.”

THUMBS UP!“Probably the position I’m most excited about right now is the tight ends. We have three good-looking guys. We’d go out and recruit those guys any day of the week. We’re not known as a fullback/tight end offense but you are going to see some formations [with these players involved]. We have to get our best 11 on the fi eld and if they are our best 11, than there are creative ways we can get those guys involved.”

SPRING PRIORITIES“I made it clear to the players that by the time we hit training camp [in the fall] spots are done. It’s game over. We’re trying to beat Miami of Ohio. Sure, some things will happen to the depth chart, but the two-deep will be set after spring practice. This is development time now. Once you get to August, we’re all about trying to fi nd a way to win a game.”

KEY TRAITS OF A FIRST-TEAMER“The competitive nature of a guy. The guy that refuses to lose. The fi ghter … the tough guy … the John Simon type kid. That’s why we do so many win or lose days. I want to see that distaste in someone’s face when they lose. If they don’t share that same distaste that a lot of our coaches have then I don’t really want to see them play. I don’t care how fast or how high they jump or how much they bench press. If I don’t see that competitive nature in them…that’s the number one thing I look for.”

LEADERSHIP“We’re looking for leadership by doing … by work ethic … by leading. I’m not interested in a bunch of group hugs or team meetings. I really want to see guys lead by not losing. You want to be a great leader? Go win!”

POSITION IN NEED“No question offensive skill. I don’t know who is going to catch a pass. There’s no track record. I don’t know who is going to carry the ball. Who is going to touch the ball? I don’t know. I can’t tell you who is going to touch it.

POSITION-BY-POSITION UPDATEDEFENSE

LINEBACKERCOACH LUKE FICKELL

Luke Fickell, defensive coordinator after serving as co-coordinator for six years before his elevation to head coach for the 2011 season, is back in charge of the team’s linebacker corps. The 2012 season will be his eighth leading the linebackers.

This year’s group has some experience at the top – seniors Storm Klein and Etienne Sabino and

sophomore Ryan Shazier each have multiple starts – but overall the unit is limited in terms of numbers. Sophomore Curtis Grant is the only other linebacker available this spring who has game experience, and his experience was mostly as a special teamer last year. Class of 2012 recruit Josh Perry has been on campus since Jan. 2.

Sabino has played in 38 games and made fi ve starts last season. He was fi fth on the team in tackles with 62. Klein started 10 times last year and had 45 tackles. He, too, has 38 games under his belt. Shazier was most impressive as a true freshman, with 57 tackles including a team-season high 15 in his fi rst career start, vs. Penn State. Grant played in 10 games and was credited with a pair of tackles.

DEFENSIVE LINECOACH MIKE VRABEL

Fourteen-year NFL veteran and decorated Buckeye – two-time All-American and twice named the Big Ten’s Defensive Player of the Year – Mike Vrabel takes over coaching his collegiate position after mentoring the team’s

linebackers in 2011. His unit returns four starters from 2011, including 2011 third-team Associated Press All-American John Simon, and Johnathan Hankins. As formidable as any duo along the line, they combined for 27 tackles for loss (for minus-83

yards) and 10 sacks last year. Simon, a 26-game starter, is a senior and Hankins, fourth on the team with 67 tackles in 2011, a junior.

Senior Garrett Goebel and junior Adam Bellamy, a couple of fi rst-year starters in 2011, also return after making 13 and 10 starts, respectively, last season. Two more linemen - sophomores J.T. Moore and Michael Bennett - joined the starters by logging line play in all 13 games last season. Joel Hale played in nine games and lettered, and Steve Miller also lettered with signifi cant special teams play. Two freshmen who redshirted last season – Chase Farris and Kenny Hayes – will be in the spring mix.

Also returning, but not competing this spring while continue to recover from knee surgery last fall, is Nathan Williams. Expected to be a leader on the line last year, Williams played in only the fi rst game of the season and ended up red-shirting the season.

SECONDARYCOACH EVERETT WITHERS (SAFETIES)COACH KERRY COOMBS (CORNERBACKS)

The two secondary positions, like defensive line, return plenty of starters and plenty of experience, something co-defensive coordinator and safeties coach Everett Withers and cornerbacks coach Kerry Coombs will certainly appreciate as they enter their fi rst spring drills as Buckeye coaches.

Both starting cornerbacks – senior Travis Howard and sophomore Bradley Roby – are back, as is talented sophomore Doran Grant. Howard and Roby had fi ve interceptions between them last year. Howard has

30 games, 11 starts and four interceptions to his credit. Roby started 12 games last year and led all Buckeyes with nine total passes defensed (six pass break-ups in addition to three interceptions), a total that was just two off the Big Ten lead. Grant played in all 13 games, including time in the secondary.

Three veteran safeties with a combined 39 starts among them also return. Junior C.J. Barnett has started 15 consecutive games and he led the team with 75 tackles last season while also intercepting two passes and breaking up six more. Hard-hitting, nine-game starter Christian Bryant was third in ’11 with 68 tackles and his eight pass break-ups were third-most in the Big Ten. And senior Orhian Johnson tied Roby for the team lead with three interceptions last season and he also had 32 tackles and played in all 13 games. Johnson, like Barnett, has started 15 times as a Buckeye.

POSITION-BY-POSITION UPDATEOFFENSE

QUARTERBACKCOACH TOM HERMAN

Tom Herman, already with seven years behind him as an offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach for three programs, including record-setting offenses at Rice University, will oversee the development of the QBs in Coach Urban Meyer’s Ohio State spread offense.

Big Ten Freshman of the Year and College Football Performance Award’s National Freshman of the Year Braxton Miller headlines the position. A 10-game starter last year, he is a dual threat quarterback who threw for 1,159 yards with a freshman school-record 13 touchdowns. He completed 54.1 percent of his passes (85 of 157) with just four interceptions. Miller also led the Buckeyes in rushing with 715 yards and seven touchdowns.

Fourth-year junior Kenny Guiton is the only other quarterback with any game experience – albeit limited – on the roster. He’s attempted just two passes and has gained 21 yards rushing, including a 15-yard touchdown run in 2010 vs. Eastern Michigan. True freshman Cardale Jones and a couple seniors, Justin Siems and Ross Oltorik, are also on board.

OFFENSIVE LINECOACH ED WARINNER

Ed Warinner, a fi nalist this past season for FootballScoop Offensive Line Coach of the Year and a 2009 fi nalist for the AFCA’s National Assistant Coach of the Year award, is in charge of the Buckeyes’ offensive line while also serving as the team’s co-offensive coordinator. A 28-year coaching veteran, Warinner was part of three Army teams that led the nation in rushing and, as offensive coordinator at Kansas, his three teams averaged 445.5 yards per game and 35.3 points.

Warinner takes over an offensive line that returns just two starters: fourth-year junior Jack Mewhort and true junior Andrew Norwell. Both players started all 13 games last year with Mewhort splitting his starts at left and right guard, respectively, and Norwell splitting his at left tackle and left guard, respectively.

Fourth-year junior guard Marcus Hall has made six career starts, including fi ve

in 2011, and has played in 20 games. Corey Linsley, who can play guard or center, has yet to start a game but he has 16 games played to his credit. And Antonio Underwood played in four games last year as a true freshman.

Reid Fragel, a 6-8, 280-pound blocking and catching tight end for the Buckeyes for three years, has switched positions and he’ll enter spring drills as a 6-8, 298-pound offensive tackle. Darryl Baldwin, a 6-6, 292-pound former defensive lineman, is also making the conversion to the offensive line. The arrival on campus this spring of 6-7, 310-pound all-state tackle Taylor Decker is eagerly anticipated.

POSITION-BY-POSITION UPDATEOFFENSE

FULLBACKS/TIGHT ENDSCOACH TIM HINTON

Tim Hinton will coach both the Buckeye fullbacks and tight ends. This 30-year coaching veteran has the experience to handle both positions as he has coached either tight ends, running backs or receivers in 11 of his previous 16 seasons coaching in the collegiate ranks.

Hinton, Coach Meyer and Co. will have two outstanding seniors leading the way in tight end Jake Stoneburner and fullback Zach Boren. Stoneburner averaged a touchdown reception every other reception last year (seven TDs/14 catches) and his nine career touchdowns are just one off the school record for tight ends. He has 37 career receptions.

Boren has been blasting holes for three years in support of the Ohio State running backs and he’ll continue to do so, but he is also a talented receiver out of the backfi eld. He has 20 career receptions – third-most among current Buckeyes – for 151 yards with a long of 25 yards.

Boren and Stoneburner have started 32 and 18 games, respectively, but there is talent behind them: Adam Homan is a senior fullback who has played in 34 games; and 6-6, 246-pound

tight end Jeff Heuerman managed line-of-scrimmage action in 11 games last year as a true freshman. He had a 25-yard catch-and-run in the TaxSlayer.com Gator Bowl against Florida. Nick Vannett, a 6-6, 248-pound redshirt freshman, gives coaches a third tight end target.

RUNNING BACKSCOACH STAN DRAYTON

Stan Drayton takes over coaching the Ohio State running backs in his second season with the program. The three-time All-American running back at Allegheny College has coached running backs in 14 of his previous 18 seasons as a coach.

Drayton’s corps of key players includes one senior, one junior, one sophomore and one freshman. Senior Jordan Hall is the most experienced returning

running back with 817 career rushing yards, a 4.4 yards-per-carry average and fi ve touchdowns. He also has 21 career receptions for 202 yards and four touchdowns. He rushed for 408 yards last year.

Junior Carlos Hyde has a nice 5.4 yards-per-carry average off 130 carries. His 707 career rushing yards includes 566 last year when he also scored six rushing touchdowns and had 100-yard games vs. Nebraska (105) and Indiana (104). He

ranks second to Braxton Miller (11) among returning players with four rushes of 20-plus yards, including a 63-yard touchdown rush vs. Nebraska and a 47-yard rush vs. Indiana.

Rod Smith is the only other back on the roster with heat-of-the-game experience. He netted 116 yards off his 29 carries last year (4.0 average) and didn’t lose a yard. Bri’onte Dunn, a 5,000-plus yard rusher in high school, enrolled in January and will be available for spring ball.

WIDE RECEIVERSCOACH ZACH SMITH

Zach Smith knows what Coach Urban Meyer wants out of a receivers coach and his receivers. Smith has fi ve years coaching experience under Meyer already as a graduate assistant/intern at Florida, during which time Florida was sending receivers like Percy Harvin, Louis Murphy, Dallas Baker, Andre Caldwell and Riley Cooper into the National Football League.

Smith’s fi rst class of Ohio State receivers has 53 combined receptions to its credit and will feature a pair of juniors: Corey Brown and Chris Fields. The group includes nearly a handful of sophomores who all experienced their fi rst collegiate action in 2011: Verlon Reed, Devin Smith, Evan Spencer and Tyrone Williams.

Brown, who has played in 22 games and made 10 starts in his fi rst two seasons, has 22 career receptions for 310 yards and two touchdowns. He and Devin Smith tied for the team lead with 14 receptions last season. Smith’s 294 receiving yards and four touchdowns led all receivers, and he averaged 21.0 yards per catch.

Reed, a starter in the fi rst fi ve games of 2011 when he had nine catches for 132 yards, was injured in the fi fth game and missed the remainder of the season. Fields had eight catches for 114 yards and Williams and Spencer had fi ve and three receptions, respectively.

DEPTH CHART MATHA new coaching staff + a new offense + an unfamiliarity with the skills of the players = no two-deep chart entering spring drills. One will be developed shortly after the conclusion of spring drills.

CLEAN SLATESUrban Meyer made it a point to watch as little of game fi lm from last year as possible, and he encouraged his assistants to do the same. The reason: he wanted every player on this team to start with a clean slate and to have his abilities judged beginning March 28 based on what he does on the practice fi elds.

“Everybody should have an opportunity for a second chance,” Meyer said. “I didn’t want to develop an opinion on any player’s ability based on last year’s fi lm. And I told the coaches, especially the guys retained from last year, that everyone starts this season with a clean slate.”

PLENTY OF COACHING EXPERIENCECoach Urban Meyer’s Ohio State coaching staff has 199 combined years of NFL, college and high school coaching experience. The total includes three coaches on staff with college head coaching experience (Meyer, Luke Fickell and Everett Withers), two with a combined 32 years of high school head coaching experience (Kerry Coombs and Tim Hinton), two with 12 years of offensive coordinator experience on the collegiate level (Tom Herman and Ed Warinner) and two with 15 years of collegiate defensive coordinator experience (Withers and Fickell).

LUKE: FOURTH DEF. COORD. RETAINED BY MEYER Urban Meyer has held four head coaching positions and at each school he has retained the previous staff’s defensive coordinator. It’s an impressive list that now includes Luke Fickell, co-defensive coordinator for six years before moving to head coach last year. The others: Tim Beckman at Bowling Green (Beckman is now head coach at Illinois); Kyle Whittingham at Utah (he is entering his seventh season as Utah head coach); and Charlie Strong at Florida (Strong just completed his second season as head coach at Louisville.).

NO OR LIMITED PRACTICESFour individuals will have practice limitations this spring: senior DL Nathan Williams (knee) and senior DB Zach Domicone (knee) will not participate in spring drills; sophomore WR Verlon Reed (knee) and junior DB Jamie Wood (shoulder) will be limited in their participation.

THE KICKING GAMEOhio State returns several key special team performers, including senior punter Ben Buchanan, junior kicker Drew Basil and junior long snapper George Makridis. Buchanan ranked fi fth in the Big Ten with an average of 41.3 yards per punt and he was sixth nationally with 27 punts downed inside of the 20. Basil led the Big Ten in fi eld goal percentage (16 of 19; 84.2 pct.) and he connected on 16 of his last 17 tries in 2011. Makridis was solid in his fi rst year as the team’s snapper last season.

IT’S ALL ABOUT THE TEAM STATSUrban Meyer’s 10 previous collegiate teams have been extremely balanced in all phases of the game. His teams have led their respective conference in a statistical category 43 times, including in 17 offensive categories, 12 defensive, nine special teams and fi ve times in turnover margin. Some conference-related highlights:

• His team’s have led a conference in total offense four times, including three times in the SEC by Florida;

• Four times his teams have led in scoring offense and passing effi ciency;

• His defenses have led a league three times against the rush and twice in scoring;

• His return teams – punt and kickoff – have led a total of fi ve times; and

• His teams have led in net punting three times.

Meyer’s teams have been ranked among the nation’s Top 10 in team statistical categories 49 times, including NCAA statistical champions in passing effi ciency (Florida; 2009) and kickoff returns (Utah; 2003).

ON THE DEFENSIVEOhio State has led the Big Ten Conference in a team defensive category 20 times since the 2005 season, the fi rst year that Luke Fickell was named a co-defensive coordinator for the program. Four times in the last seven years – 2005-07-09-10 – Ohio State has led the Big Ten in total defense and it has led the league three times each in rushing and scoring defense, and turnover margin.

AMONG THE NATION’S BESTOhio State’s defensive units the last seven years under Fickel and the now retired Jim Heacock have been good…real good! The defense has been an NCAA statistical champion four times in that span – 2005 rushing; 2007 total, scoring and pass defense – and it has been among the Top 5 15 other times. Ohio State was Top 5 nationally in fi ve defensive categories in 2010: rushing, total defense, scoring, passing effi ciency and turnover margin.

BY THE NUMBERS

HEAD COACH URBAN MEYERSometime during the morning of November 28, 2011, Ohio native Urban Meyer returned home. It was at that time when the 47-year-old Meyer, born in Toledo, raised in Ashtabula and with degrees from the University of Cincinnati and The Ohio State University,

signed a six-year agreement to become the 24th head coach in the storied history of Ohio State football.

The only candidate interviewed by a fi ve-member search committee of senior Ohio State leaders,

headed by President E. Gordon Gee and Director of Athletics Gene Smith, Meyer returns to collegiate coaching after sitting out the past year to devote time to his family – wife Shelley, college-age daughters Nicole and Gisele and 13-year-old son Nathan – and to work as an analyst for ESPN.

“In Urban Meyer we have found an exemplary person and remarkable coach to lead the University’s football program into the future,” Gee said. “As an alumnus, he understands and believes in the core academic mission of the University. As an Ohioan, he shares our common values and sense of purpose.”

Smith said that Meyer is “known not only as one of the nation’s most successful coaches, but also as a leader and mentor who cares deeply about the young men who are his student-athletes. He brings with him an understanding of the University – both the important traditions of its football program and the excellence of the institution.”

It’s easy to see why he was the No. 1 choice of the search committee.

Through 10 full seasons as a head coach, Meyer has the tenth-best winning percentage in major college football history with a winning rate of .819 (104-23). He will leap all the way to No. 2 among current major college coaches with that percentage, trailing only the .926 percentage owned by Boise State’s Chris Peterson.

Meyer has already won two national championships – in 2006 and 2008 with the University of Florida – and no less than three national coach of the year honors, including The Sporting News honor in 2003 and the Eddie Robinson and Home Depot Coach of the Year awards, respectively, in 2004.

Meyer has not only won big at each of his three previous head coaching positions, but he has won immediately. He led Bowling Green to the best turnaround season in the nation in 2001 with an 8-3 record and he went 9-3 in Year 2. He was 22-2 in two seasons at Utah, including a 16-game winning streak and a 12-0 campaign in 2004 when he led the fi rst-ever non-Bowl Championship Season program into a BCS game.

He was 65-15 in his six seasons at Florida with the two national titles, two Southeastern Conference championships and three 13-win seasons, including consecutive 13-win seasons in 2008 and 2009 to become the fi rst coach ever to accomplish that feat.

And now he brings his coaching talents home to Ohio, the state where he has lived for 25 of his 47 years and where he met his wife, the former Shelley Mather, who grew up in Frankfort, Ohio.

“I am honored and humbled by the opportunity to return to Ohio State,” said Meyer. “This University and the state of Ohio have enormous meaning to me. My duty is to ensure that Ohio State’s football program refl ects and enhances the academic mission of the institution. I am part of it, I believe in it, and I will live it.”

IT ALL STARTED IN OHIOAfter graduating from Saint John High School in Ashtabula, Meyer was a 13th-round MLB draft pick of the Atlanta Braves and spent two years in minor league baseball. He matriculated to Cincinnati and played defensive back for the football program, graduating in 1986 with his bachelor’s degree in psychology.

Meyer’s fi rst football coaching experience was as an intern at St. Xavier High School in Cincinnati in 1986. The following year, he joined Coach Earle Bruce’s staff at Ohio State and spent two years as a graduate assistant – coaching tight ends in 1986 and receivers in 1987 – while pursuing his master’s degree in sports administration.

It was during his time as a Buckeye – Ohio State won a Big Ten title in 1986 and 1987 was Bruce’s fi nal season as coach – that he forged a relationship with Bruce that has only been strengthened through the tests of time and change.

“My relationship with him [Earle] is extremely close, second only to my father,” Meyer said during the news conference to announce his hiring at Ohio State…17 days after his father, Bud, passed away.

“Every step of my career, every part of my family life, Coach Bruce has always been there. So close that he was gracious enough to speak at my father’s funeral just last Friday.”

Meyer, as every young coach who aspires to be a head coach and who thirsts for knowledge, then moved on to a series of assistant coaching positions – Illinois State for two years under Jim Heacock, Colorado State for six years under Sonny Lubick and Bruce, and Notre Dame for one year under Lou Holtz and fi ve years under Bob Davie – before getting his fi rst head coaching assignment at Bowling Green.

FIRST YEAR: COACH OF THE YEARTaking over a team that was 2-9 in 2000 and that had not had a winning season seven years, Meyer guided the Falcons to the top turnaround in the nation in 2001 with a six-win improvement and an 8-3 record that included wins over Missouri, Northwestern and BGSU’s rival to its north, Toledo. He was named Mid-American Conference Coach of the Year.

He followed that fi rst year with a 9-3 record in his second year with the Falcons, including another win over Missouri. After BG opened the season with eight consecutive wins, the program cracked both the Associated Press and ESPN/USA Today Top 25 polls for the fi rst time in school history, peaking with an all-time school best No. 16 national ranking by ESPN/USA Today.

Meyer’s BGSU teams were anything but one-dimensional. His 2002 team led the nation in red zone production with 61 scores in 63 trips inside the 20 (.968) and were ninth in total offense (448.9 yards per game). Defensively, his 2001 team ranked fi rst in the MAC in scoring, rushing and total defense and his teams led the MAC both years in turnover margin.

Josh Harris, who became a starter at quarterback in the ninth game of the 2001 season and reeled off 11 consecutive wins as a starter, told Plain Dealer reporter Elton Alexander that his former coach simply made players believe they were as good as any other team.

“One thing for sure, when coach Meyer believes in a guy, he might even believe in him more than the guy believes in himself,” Harris said. “There was a time when I had to get my belief in Josh Harris up to where Urban Meyer believed that Josh Harris was. That really propelled me, and my game, to new levels.

“That’s one of the things he did for me that I will always be thankful for.”

THE MOVE OUT WESTMeyer moved on the University of Utah following the 2002 season and in two seasons led the Utes to a 22-2 record. He was named national Coach of the Year in 2003 by The Sporting News and in 2004 he was named the Football Writers Association of America’s Eddie Robinson Coach of the Year and the Home Depot Coach of the Year.

In his fi rst season in Salt Lake City, Meyer coached the Utes to their fi rst outright conference championship since 1957, a 17-0 Liberty Bowl win over Southern Mississippi, and a fi nal national ranking of No. 21. In addition to his national coach of the year honor by The Sporting News, Meyer was named Mountain West Conference coach of the year and thus became the fi rst coach in Utah’s 111-year football history to earn such an honor in his fi rst year.

Utah then enjoyed the fi nest season in program history in 2004. The 12-0 record was the fi rst 12-0 season in 75 years and a second-consecutive outright MWC championship was the fi rst in conference history.

The Utah offense was unstoppable, finishing in the Top 5 in six categories, including No. 3 in scoring (45.3), total offense (499.7) and turnover margin (1.25). The team also led the MWC in 11 statistical categories and was No. 2 in passing, scoring and total defense.

Following Utah’s 16th consecutive win, a 35-7 pummeling of Pitt in the Fiesta Bowl, Meyer’s record was a sterling 39-7 as a head coach and the University of Florida was in need of a coach.

SIMPLY GREAT IN GAINESVILLE“Urban’s accomplishments speak for themselves,” Florida Athletics Director Jeremy Foley said. And this was before Meyer had even begun to blow his previous coaching accomplishments out of the water with the even-greater success he would experience coaching the Gators.

Meyer coached Florida to a 9-3 record in his initial season, a record that included wins over four nationally ranked opponents, making Meyer the fi rst fi rst-year coach in UF history to accomplish the feat.

Meyer’s Year 2 success – he was a combined 21-3 in his second season at Bowling Green and Utah – continued in Gainesville as he led the Gators to a school-record 13 wins, and SEC and national championships against the toughest schedule in the nation. Florida played six ranked teams and 11 of its opponents went to bowl games. The BCS Championship game win: 41-14 over No. 1 ranked Ohio State in Glendale, Ariz. Meyer was named national Coach of the Year by the All-American Foundation at the conclusion of the season.

The 2007 Gator team went 9-3 and featured a Heisman Trophy-winning Tim Tebow and ranked third nationally with an average of 42.5 points per game.

Consecutive 13-win seasons followed in 2008 and 2009, a fi rst in major college history. The 2008 team was the most prolifi c offensive unit in SEC history with 611 points scored against the nation’s second-toughest schedule. Meyer won a second national championship this season, with Florida defeating Oklahoma, 24-14, in the BCS Championship game in Miami, Fla.

The only blemish on an otherwise spectacular 13-1 2009 season was to eventual national champion Alabama in the SEC championship game. This team’s senior class departed with the best record for a class in SEC history: 48-7.

Meyer, who took a brief leave of absence from coaching following the 2009 season, coached his last Florida team to an 8-5 record. His last game as Florida coach was 37-24 win over Penn State in the Outback Bowl, in Tampa, Fla.

HEAD COACH URBAN MEYERBACK HOME TO OHIOOn Wednesday, Nov. 23, Ohio State Director of Athletics Gene Smith fi rst talked to Meyer about returning to coaching after spending the year in an ESPN analyst booth. On Sunday, Nov. 27, Smith presented Meyer with terms for a six-year contract. Less than 24 hours later Meyer was a Buckeye.

And the rest of this story is future history.

NATIONAL CHAMPION• Urban Meyer is one of only two active head coaches to have

won two consensus national championships, tutor an overall No. 1 pick in the NFL Draft and have one of his players win a Heisman Trophy.

• Urban Meyer is the only coach to win 13 games in back-to-back seasons and he leads all active coaches with three 13-win seasons.

• Only two coaches have had more victories in their first 10 years as a head coach than Meyer’s 104: George Woodruff (124 between 1892-1901 at Pennsylvania) and Bob Stoops (109 between 1999-2008). Note: records include at least five years as a Division I coach.

• Only two coaches have had more victories in their first 10 years as a head coach than Meyer’s 104: George Woodruff (124 between 1892-1901 at Pennsylvania) and Bob Stoops (109 between 1999-2008). Note: records include at least five years as a Division I coach.

• Meyer has won 13 games three times during his career, including back-to-back in 2008 and 2009 to become the first BCS coach to ever accomplish that feat.

• His teams are 21-3 in “rivalry

games.” Bowling Green was 1-1 vs. Toledo; Utah was 4-0 vs. Utah State and BYU; and Florida was 16-2 vs. Florida State, Tennessee and Georgia.

• His teams are also 60-18 in conference play with four championships (two apiece at Utah and Florida). They are also 2-1 in SEC title games, 7-1 in bowl games and 4-0 in BCS bowl games.

• Meyer has coached his teams to winning streaks of 11 games (Bowling Green), 20 games (16 at Utah and four at Florida), 11 games (Florida) and 22 games (Florida).

• His teams have 14 wins by 40-or-more points and another 20 wins by at least 30 points for a total of 34 routs.

• Meyer’s teams are 2-2 vs. the No. 1 team in the nation, 7-3 vs. Top 5 teams, 11-4 vs. Top 10 teams and 19-7 vs. Top 25 teams.

• Both the Sporting News and Sports Illustrated named Meyer “Coach of the Decade” in December 2009.

• So far, 30 of his former Florida Gator players have been chosen in the NFL Draft, including more first-round selections – eight – than any other school has produced in the last five years.

• Meyer has watched a total of 36 players that he coached for at least two years get selected in the NFL Draft, including nine first-round draft picks.

• Of those 36 NFL Draft picks, three were quarterbacks: Bowling Green’s Josh Harris was a sixth-round selection by Baltimore in the 2004 NFL Draft and Utah’s Alex Smith (San Francisco, 2005) and Florida’s Tim Tebow (Denver, 2010) were each No. 1 draft picks with Smith the overall No. 1 pick.

• In addition to Smith and Tebow, Meyer’s first-round draft picks include offensive linemen Maurkice Pouncey (Pittsburgh, 2010) and Mike Pouncey (Miami, 2011); defensive linemen Jarvis Moss (Denver, 2007) and Derrick Harvey (Jacksonville, 2008); defensive backs Reggie Nelson (Jacksonville, 2007) and Joe Haden (Cleveland, 2010); and wide receiver/running back Percy Harvin (Minnesota, 2009).

• With the exception of kickers, Meyer has had multiple players at every position drafted into the NFL, including a position-best 10 defensive linemen, seven wide receivers, six defensive backs and five offensive linemen.

• Six of Meyer’s former assistant coaches are head coaches: Steve Addazio (Temple); Tim Beckman (Illinois); John “Doc Holliday (Marshall); Dan McCarney (North Texas); Dan Mullen (Mississippi State) and Charlie Strong (Louisville).

• Nine of his former assistant coaches are offensive (OC) defensive (DC), passing game (PG) or run game (RG) coordinators: Zach Azzanni (OC at Western Kentucky); Vance Bedford (DC at Louisville); Gregg Brandon (OC at Wyoming); Billy Gonzales (PG at LSU); Chuck Heater (DC at Temple); John Hevesy (RG at Mississippi State); Scott Loeffler (OC at Temple); Greg Mattison (DC at Michigan) and Greg Studrawa (OC at LSU).
