About Monsoon Sessions

In its inaugural year, the Northern Territory government is very pleased to support Monsoon Sessions, a unique and much anticipated festival. Festival organisers have worked hard to deliver an event that provides the Territory’s vibrant arts sector with multiple opportunities for collaboration, professional development and networking with their national counterparts. In addition to many of the fascinating workshops, forums and discussions that will take place, a highlight for everyone will no

doubt be Long Live Rock, a celebration of some of the greatest rock films ever made. I encourage the Territory’s arts sector to embrace this extraordinary 11 day event.

This is a festival for artists that will provide opportunities to enhance professionalism and expertise and to establish stronger connections with national and international arts practice. It will feature master classes, workshops, seminars, talks and demonstrations and will cover a range of art forms, including broadcasting, digital media, theatre, dance, music, film, and visual arts. The festival will also feature a number of events that are common to all participants, thereby creating greater

awareness and understanding across art forms as well as creating opportunities for networking and future collaborations. I hope you enjoy the offerings.

Since the beginning of talking movies, sound design has played a crucial role in the presentation of film, video, theatre, animation and other performance based visuals. Take your knowledge of sound to the next level with this introduction to sound design. This workshop will discuss the basic elements and some technical aspects of working with sound for a visual medium.

Attendees will be expected to have an understanding of audio recording software such as Pro Tools, Logic Pro, Cubase or Reason and a basic understanding of audio signal processing such as EQ and compression.

Peter Houtmeyers is a Lecturer in Interactive Digital Media at Charles Darwin University. He has over 10 years experience in the multimedia industry and education sectors and has spent considerable time within the Middle Eastern and European audio industry, providing a global experience in multimedia.

Crowdfunding is playing an increasing role in getting creative projects off the ground. This relatively new funding model has given life to the creative aspirations of many of our much loved artists. Co-founder of Pozible, Rick Chen shares his insights and perspectives on how crowdfunding can work for your next creative project. Pozible is an online crowdfunding platform and community for creative projects and ideas. Developed for artists, musicians, filmmakers, journalists, designers, social change makers, entrepreneurs, inventors, event organisers, software developers and all creative minded people to raise funds, realise their aspirations and make great things possible.

Pozible provides project creators with a platform to present their ideas to a worldwide audience. If anyone likes the idea they can support it by pledging money to the creator’s project. In return for support, the project creators will offer rewards depending on the level of funding; essentially differentiating itself from the normal funding process.

Rick Chen is an entrepreneur and social change maker with a strong focus on new media design. Rick co-founded Pozible, Australia’s first crowdfunding platform, after completing his Master’s degree in digital media design.

Timelapse WorkshopTimelapse is a fast and effective technique for showing your creative process or event. It’s easy to do, and easy to share online. This workshop will teach participants how to film, edit and upload a simple timelapse video using their own camera and a computer.

Alex Smee is an ABC producer based in Broome. She has wide experience as an editor, director, writer and graphic designer. She is currently ABC Open’s West Kimberley producer.

The media and storytelling landscape is constantly changing but in the last six years we have never seen such monumental change. Gary takes us on a journey from the old days of new media through to the very near future using current examples of the work in ABCs Multi Platform TV team through to other cutting edge examples of Augmented Reality, Transmedia, Social Media Storytelling and Games.

Gary Hayes, an award winning multi platform producer, is currently executive producer at ABC Multi Platform TV and also directs transmedia training unit StoryLabs.us. Throughout his extensive career he has worked across the UK music and multimedia industry including the development of the internet, interactive TV and cross platforms for the BBC. He is a regular keynote speaker, consultant producer in social & transmedia to the TV, Film and Arts industries. He has also been an International Interactive Emmy juror for the past three years. Producer Tony Buchen presents this practical session on getting the best out of your home studio using the gear you have. A range of topics including mic placement, gear advice and recording tips will be covered in this session. Tony has notched up an impressive back-catalogue of projects with artists such as Bluejuice, The Church and Blue King Brown.

Tony Buchen’s experience as a musician and skills as a producer have continued to resonate with the broad spectrum of artists he has worked with, and his career has gone from strength to strength.

Recent projects include mixing John Butler’s ‘Live At Red Rocks’ (2011 ARIA Nomination), producing an EP for NZ artist Gin Wigmore, scoring a spot in triple j’s Hottest 100 of 2010 with ‘Dog’ by Andy Bull (feat. Lisa Mitchell) and receiving critical acclaim for his work with Melbourne hip-hop artist Phrase, whose new album ‘Babylon’ eschews pre-fabricated beats and sampling for scratch-made live tracks with 60’s garage rock and 70’s soul stylings.

The Happy Yess continues the tradition of being a space for people to share their thoughts with the second in the 2012 lecture series. Nico Liengme and Tom Halliday present a night of words, music, passion and headbanging brilliance, sharing their expansive knowledge on the history of heavy metal and electronic media respectively. The introduction of DSLR cameras into the video production market has been described as a ‘game changer’ in the film, video and television production industry.

Pro AV Solutions, in conjunction with the ACS NT Branch and Darwin Pro Video, presents an information session on the latest DSLRs and other large sensor cameras, and the impact they are having on the production industry. The session will be facilitated by Kym Rogers from Pro Av Solutions in Adelaide and ACS NT President Andrew Hyde.

Kym Rogers has been operating Pro AV Solutions for over 25 years. They are a major supplier of pro video, audio, lighting, grips, and all production accessories. Kym will have on display the latest in Canon and Sony camera systems including the NEX-FS700.

Andrew Hyde is a freelance cinematographer having worked in the broadcast television industry for over 20 years. His documentary credits include Supporting Roles, Dahkiya Vs the King and In a League of Their Own and his broadcast television credits include Grand Designs and numerous ABC projects.

The Forum will be facilitated by Christian (Bong) Ramilo, Executive Officer of Darwin Community Arts. It will also include a panel of artists and other stakeholders.

Bong has been Executive Officer of Darwin Community Arts (DCA) since 2006 and a community artist for over thirty years. He received an Australia Council Fellowship in 2000 to explore new technologies and community cultural development and continues this exploration through digital media projects at DCA, and beyond.

ActingEamon Flack - Associate Director New Projects, BelvoirAcclaimed director Eamon Flack will take actors through an exciting physical and thought provoking experience. Designed for actors with some experience, this is a class you won’t want to miss. Eamon graduated from the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts and worked as an actor for a number of years. Since 2006 he has been the Artistic Associate-Programming and Development at Company B Belvoir Theatre.

He has directed a number of works at Belvoir, including Beckett’s The End, As You Like It and Baby Teeth, with outstanding success. He was also dramaturg on the innovative and highly acclaimed production of The Wild Duck.

Chris Mead - Artistic Director Playwriting Australia Chris has been directing for theatre since 1987 and is a highly experienced dramaturg. He has also been Literary Manager of both Company B Belvoir St Theatre the Sydney Theatre Company.

Suellen Maunder - Artistic Director Jute Theatre Company Suellen is an actor, director producer and writer. In 1972 she co- founded Jute Theatre which is dedicated to developing and producing new works.

This fascinating seminar will provide you with the information you need to put on a successful independent show. Ideal for first time producers, or if you just need some clarification around certain areas. Sam Hawker from Arts Radar, Sydney based supporter and producer of independent theatre and dance will take you through step by step what it means to produce, and some of the areas that are important for a production to be successful.

Sam Hawker started her theatre career as a Stage Manager after studying at WAAPA. Her credits include Michael Kantor’s The Ham Funeral and Neil Armfield’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Over the years Sam has worked with hundreds of artists, directors and choreographers on a wide variety of productions from cabaret to Shakespeare, contemporary dance to comedy, outdoor spectaculars to intimate theatre and everything inbetween.

This full day workshop for both emerging and experienced playwrights is a must for anyone wishing to further hone their skills in this area. Participants should have had at least one play produced.

Jane Bodie is Head of Playwriting at NIDA. She is a writer and director whose plays have been performed worldwide, from the UK to New York and Brazil. Jane won a Green Room Award for Outstanding Writing in 2003 and the prestigious Louis Esson Prize for Drama in 2006. In 2009 Jane also wrote a large scale community play Us, to celebrate Hampstead Theatre’s 50th Anniversary.

Prior to her appointment at NIDA Jane worked for five years at the Royal Court Theatre in London. She has also written extensively for TV and radio, including The Secret Life of Us, No Angels, Moving Wallpaper, Echo Beach and Well, for Radio 4 in the UK.

In this entertaining forum learn all you need to know about making your own rock n roll film with rock legends Todd and Cal Williams. Discover the ins and outs of recording live music, filming on stage, the construction of a storyline and the pace of a good rockumentary - Todd and Cal will reveal all.

Todd Williams is a Territory videographer, musician and movie-nut. He is a Fist Full of Films winner for Demons (2001), and has directed video clips for Shellie Morris, Jane Kitto and Iwantja Band.

Cal Williams is a founding member of NT bands Swamp Jockeys, Yothu Yindi, PEKAS and Horse Trank. He is also winner of the inaugural Fist Full of Films video of the year and also winner of best sound track the following year.

Future TalkThe Future of NT Dance - Burning Issues and Big IdeasPresented by Ausdance NTYou are invited to contribute to a facilitated conversation about dance in the Northern Territory. This public forum will offer everyone who attends the chance to be heard, and to help shape the big ideas that will support the future of dance in the Northern Territory. Led by Julie Dyson AM, the National Director of Ausdance and four leaders from the Territory dance sector, the forum will address the future of dance in the Territory and answer the question: What is your most burning issue, and what is your biggest idea?

MusicMusicNT will be undertaking a sector wide consultation during the workshops in Monsoon sessions and through our online networks to identify the key issues facing musicians and the music industry in the Northern Territory. The results of this will be put forward as part of the Future Forum on Sunday 24th of June.

Future ForumThis final forum brings together all sectors to look at some big ideas and possibilities for the future of the arts in the Territory.

Discussions and ideas arising from the day’s forums will come together as participants share their thoughts and several speakers will present some visionary possibilities. This will be moderated by Richard Margetson.Everyone is invited to participate.
