he Mississippi Economic Council’s Student-Teacher Achievement Recognition (STAR) Program has saluted the academic achievements of the state’s outstanding high school students and teachers for 46 years. This year’s class joins more than 20,000 top scholars and leading teachers whohave qualified for recognition in the STAR program, the most prestigious educationalrecognition program in the state. STAR Students are seniors with the highest ACT scores (minimum 25) andscholastic averages (minimum 93) in their high schools. They are chosen from more than 300 public, private, and parochial schools. STAR scholarships are provided by the Kelly Gene Cook, Sr. Charitable Foundation, Inc. This year, the top ALL-STAR Scholar will receive a four-year $24,000 scholarship awarded at $6,000 per year. The runner-up will receive a four-year $20,000 scholarship; the third-place scholar will receive a four-year $16,000 scholarship. The STAR Teachers of these top students each will receive a $500 award. Each of the remaining ALL-STAR Scholars will receive a $500 scholarship, withhis or her STAR Teacher receiving a $250 award.
KellyGeneCook,Sr.,wasbornin1930inFrench Camp, Mississippi. He graduated from Mississippi State University with a degree in Civil Engineering. Mr. Cook was a pipeliner for more than three decades. He joined Houston Contracting Companyin1956andbecamevicepresidentand general manager for domestic and foreign operationsin1971.Inthiscapacity,hedealtwith pipelines throughout the Middle East, Brazil,Trinidad,Ecuador,andNigeria.In1976,he and a partner formed Gregory & Cook, Inc., apipelinecontractingfirminHouston,Texas.
Mr. Cook was active in the industry associations,servingontheboardsoftheInternational Pipeline Contractors Association and the American Pipeline Contractors Association. In1986,Mr.Cookandhiswife,Peggy,formedtheKellyGeneCook,Sr.CharitableFoundation, Inc. The Foundation primarily provides funds to supportreligious,charitable,scientific,andeducationalorganizationsinMississippi,Louisiana,andTexas. Mr.CookdiedonNovember27,1989.

sippi College. She has been teaching for 40 years. Fuller teaches Secondary Honors English and Senior Projects at Simpson County Academy. Awards and Honors include William Winter Teacher Scholar, Simpson Academy Teacher of the Year for three years, Who’s Who Among Teachers, Veterans of Foreign Wars National Citizenship Education Teacher, Simpson County Soil and Water Conversation Educator of the Year, Claes Nobel Educator of Distinction for two years.
RobertDarylLewisRobert Daryl Lewis attended Delta State University where he earned both his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees. He has been teaching for 27 years. Lewis taught 11th and 12th grade U.S. History, Government and Economics. He retired in 2011; however,
he will teach Spanish this fall at Deer Creek School in Arcola, Mississippi. His honors include Claes Nobel Educator of Distinction 2011, DAR, Mississippi, U.S. History, SAPT 2008-2010. Moreover, six students earned perfect scores on U.S. History SATP in 2003, 2004, 2006 and 2008.
Tammy SkinnerTammy Skinner earned her Bachelor’s of Science degree from Blue Mountain College and her Master’s degree from the University of Mississippi. She has done postgraduate studies in Physics, chemistry, and biotechnology education at
Mississippi State University, Mississippi University for Women and the University of Mississippi. She has been teaching for 24 years. Skinner is the Chemistry and Physics teacher at Southern Baptist Educational Center (SBEC). She is a Member of the National Science Teachers Association. Her honors include DeSoto County Foundation for Excellence in Education Grant Recipient, 2011, 2007; Teacher of the Year SBEC 2009, 1995 and 1991; and Southaven Rotary Teacher of the Month February 2000, April 1998 and March 1995.

Each STAR Student selects one outstanding teacherwhoseinfluencehashelpedthatgraduatingseniorachieveacademicexcellence.The STAR Teacher designation is recognition of the distinctive role that teachers play in the lives of students. The STAR Teacher Hall of Fame is reserved forteacherswhohavebeenchosenSTARTeacherat least 10 times. TheSTARprogramis46yearsold.TheHallofFamewasestablishedin1985throughcontributionsbyFirst Mississippi Corporation, which through its successor–ChemFirst Inc.–has sponsored the awards annually since that time. This year, three classroom teachers have qualifiedforHallofFameinduction,bringingto68thenumberofoutstandingteacherswhohave reached this teaching milestone. The 2011-2012 Hall of Fame inductees will receiveaspecialawardmadepossiblethroughthegenerosity of the ChemFirst/First Mississippi Corporation Charitable Endowment Fund.
