2012 FLORIDA YOUTH SUBSTANCE ABUSE SURVEY
Jefferson County
Methodology
Survey administration: February-March of 2012.
Sampling strategy: schools and classrooms were selected to generate statistically representative county-level estimates.
Final sample size was 151 across grades 6 through 12.
The margin of error is less than 11.4 percentage points for M.S. prevalence rates and 15.4 percentage points for H.S. prevalence rates.

Key Findings With overall prevalence rates of 43.9% for lifetime use
and 22.7% for past-30-day use, alcohol is the most commonly used drug among Jefferson County students.
After alcohol, students reported marijuana (21.7% lifetime and 9.5% past-30-day) and cigarettes (26.4% lifetime and 6.0% past-30-day) as the most commonly used drugs.
For other ATOD categories, past-30-day prevalence ranges from 3.8% for inhalants to 0.6% for Rx pain relievers.
No students reported past-30-day use of steroids, Rx amphetamines, depressants, heroin, cocaine, crack cocaine, methamphetamine, or club drugs.

Key Findings In Jefferson County, past-30-day alcohol use was
reported at 22.7%, compared to 24.6% across the statewide sample.
While binge drinking increased from 2008 to 2010 (from 11.8% to 14.2%), it declined in 2012 to 9.8%.
Past-30-day cigarette and marijuana use both increased from 2008 to 2010, but then declined in 2012 (to 6.0% and 9.5%, respectively).
21.7% of high school students have ridden in a car with a driver who was under the influence of alcohol, and 21.1% have ridden with a driver under the influence of marijuana.

Key Findings In Jefferson County, 7.3% of surveyed students
reported the use of any illicit drug other than marijuana in the past 30 days, compared to 8.2% across the statewide sample.
Past-30-day inhalant use increased slightly, from 3.6% in 2010 to 3.8% in 2012.
Past-30-day Rx pain reliever use was reported at 0.6%, compared to 2.3% across the statewide survey.
Among middle school students, 6.4% reported the use of inhalants in the past 30 days, a rate higher than any other illicit drug (except marijuana).

Key Findings In Jefferson County, prevalence rates for Being Arrested
(2.8%) and Taking a Handgun to School (2.1%) are less than 3.0%.
Notably higher prevalence rates were reported for Getting Suspended (30.5%), Attacking Someone with Intent to Harm (11.8%) and Being Drunk or High at School (10.8%).
In Jefferson County, 35.4% of students have been socially bullied, 16.5% have been physically bullied, and 12.7% have been cyber bullied.
32.1% of students have belonged to a gang with a name, and 4.1% of high school students are currently gang members.

Middle school students reported the lowest rates of protection for the Religiosity (50%) and School Rewards for Prosocial Involvement (53%) scales.
High school students reported the lowest rates of protection for the School Opportunities for Prosocial Involvement (40%) and Family Rewards for Prosocial Involvement (45%) scales.
