Based on the award-winning picture book by Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler, published by Macmillan Children’s books. How the cat purred and how the witch grinned as they sat on their broomstick and flew through the wind… The witch and her cat are flying happily on their broomstick – until a stormy wind blows away the witch’s hat, bow and wand. A helpful dog, bird and frog find the witch’s lost things, and they all hop on the broom for a ride. But this broomstick’s not meant for five and – CRACK – the broom snaps in two! When a hungry dragon appears, who will save the poor witch? And will there ever be room on the broom for everyone? Songs, laughs and scary fun for children aged 3 and up (and their grown-ups), from the team behind The Gruffalo and The Gruffalo’s Child.

Become an e-buddy of the Seymour.

Since the inception of the Seymour Centre’s Arts Education program in 2011 we have invited teachers to join our e-advisory group—a group of educators who inform the Seymour what schools need from a performing arts centre and who also allow us to run ideas and questions by them.

A team of 14 teachers joined us in the first year and we now number 30 and looking for more! This group provides much needed advice and in return we are able to give them free tickets to great events throughout the year.

If you are a primary or secondary teacher and would like to join the group and contribute to the growth and development of Seymour’s education program then please send us an email with the following information.

• Teacher name/s • School name and type (Primary or Secondary)

Welcome to Seymour’s 2013 Arts Education program.

2013 marks our third year of tailoring a program that not only provides fantastic syllabus-based performances for young people but that also proudly showcases events where students themselves take centre-stage and experience, through practical participation, the enormous social and pedagogical benefits engaging in the arts can provide.

The Seymour’s 2013 education program is rich with diversity: we are a place for English and Drama students to experience play-texts coming to full, three-dimensional life, just as the playwright intended; we are a place for teachers to gain accredited professional development training; a place for dance students to engage with one of Australia’s leading choreographers and see his award winning performance and we are a place for students to wrestle with some well-known texts in practical, informative workshop sessions.

I would like to thank my informal teacher advisory, Seymour’s e-buddies, for helping build this program. Many of you expressed the need for the program to have even greater links to syllabus objectives and this is certainly in evidence in the program. Thanks for your guidance and I welcome any teacher keen to have a deeper relationship with the Seymour to sign up.

Sincere thanks also to our student showcase partners; The Arts Unit within the NSW Department of Education and Communities, Sydney Region Education and the Board of Studies for continuing to partner with us to present a wide range of events each year. We love presenting the best work from student performers and look forward to these programs in 2013.

Enjoy the program, I hope it complements your work in the classroom and please, stay in touch.

Susan (who initially calls herself Rita), seeking escape from the routine of her work and social life, enrols in an Open University English Literature course tutored by Dr Frank Bryant, a middle aged, alcoholic academic.

Over the course of one year Russell’s beautifully drawn characters have a profound effect on one another, Frank forced to re-examine his life and Susan finding a new self-confidence. Premiering in 1980, Educating Rita became an instant hit winning the Laurence Olivier Award for Best New Comedy. This heartwarming new production stars Sarah Robinson as Rita and Paul Holmes as Frank.

Using nothing but a bale of hay, some amazing sound effects and brilliant physical and vocal dexterity, Masterson ignites this famous yarn bringing a modern sinister relevence to Orwell’s masterwork, leaving an indelible imprint in the consciousness. Hilariously comic and terribly poignant in turn, Masterson’s breathtaking physical storytelling creates the entire farmyard around you in two hours of utterly compelling theatre. Now officially the most highly performed solo show in the world, this is a must see performance for all ages. If you’ve never seen or read Animal Farm, this is the show for you.

“Passionate and pacy…the depth of ideas and emotional horsepower to connect broadly…bitingly funny…and no shortage of illuminating ideas…it works splendidly.” JASON BLAKE, SYDNEY MORNING HERALD

Hamlet returns in 2013 after a critically acclaimed season in 2012. In a world of accidental judgments and casual slaughters, where everyone dies but no-one is permitted to grieve, a young man speaks for us all by daring to speak for himself. Director and educator, Damien Ryan, brings his 15 years of acclaimed experience with this great story to an inspiring and passionate new 100- minute production, exploring loyalty and faithlessness, madness and freedom, and the debts boys owe to their fathers, in a clear, insightful, and thrillingly imaginative Hamlet.

OthelloB Y W I L L I A M S H A K E S P E A R E

Experiencing a live production of Othello is crucial for students to truly appreciate the power latent in this great tragedy. Commonly described as Shakespeare’s most exciting play, Othello’s cracking pace, relentless action and breathtaking emotional climax are simply impossible to experience outside the theatre. Not to mention the thrilling relationship an audience forms with a flesh-and-blood Iago, the play’s master manipulator, played by Damien Ryan, Sport For Jove’s acclaimed artistic director.

“Othello moves us because it is a story in which we see ourselves. It is an ordinary, human story which taps into that extraordinar-ily powerful but rarely acknowledged human desire which we all share: envy. But far from being a simple moral lesson, the play is a stunning exploration of our complex and con-tradictory humanity. Its richness is in the detail with which each of its characters is drawn – in Othello and Desdemona, Iago, Emilia, Cassio and Roderigo we see parts of ourselves we usually keep hidden from view.” MATT EDGERTON, DIRECTOR

Bring your students to the Seymour Centre for an intensive, syllabus-based lecture and professional workshop to prepare them for the HSC. A great to way for teachers to expand their perspectives on these great works too.

• Hamlet• Julius Caesar• Richard III• As You Like It

In our 3-hour Symposiums, Sport for Jove Artistic Director Damien Ryan and his team lead a dynamic process of analysis and exploration of these texts, linked to the demands of essay writing and the Board of Studies requirements every step of the way. Blending lecture and interactive performance from professional actors, your students will examine key scenes and characters, Shakespeare’s language, the plays’ textual integrity in performance, and experience the theatrical qualities of the work, lifting ideas and events from the page to the stage

Throughout the process, students will engage in discussion, ask and answer questions, experiment with their own ideas and witness the effect of different interpretations of the work. Our focus is to give students a highly relevant and deeply personal experience of these plays, fostering their personal voice in response to the work.
