Become an e-buddy of the Seymour.

Since the inception of the Seymour Centre’s Arts Education program in 2011 we have invited teachers to join our e-advisory group—a group of educators who inform the Seymour what schools need from a performing arts centre and who also allow us to run ideas and questions by them.

A team of 14 teachers joined us in the first year and we now number 30 and looking for more! This group provides much needed advice and in return we are able to give them free tickets to great events throughout the year.

Welcome to Seymour’s 2013 Arts Education program.

2013 marks our third year of tailoring a program that not only provides fantastic syllabus-based performances for young people but that also proudly showcases events where students themselves take centre-stage and experience, through practical participation, the enormous social and pedagogical benefits engaging in the arts can provide.

The Seymour’s 2013 education program is rich with diversity: we are a place for English and Drama students to experience play-texts coming to full, three-dimensional life, just as the playwright intended; we are a place for teachers to gain accredited professional development training; a place for dance students to engage with one of Australia’s leading choreographers and see his award winning performance and we are a place for students to wrestle with some well-known texts in practical, informative workshop sessions.

I would like to thank my informal teacher advisory, Seymour’s e-buddies, for helping build this program. Many of you expressed the need for the program to have even greater links to syllabus objectives and this is certainly in evidence in the program. Thanks for your guidance and I welcome any teacher keen to have a deeper relationship with the Seymour to sign up.

Sincere thanks also to our student showcase partners; The Arts Unit within the NSW Department of Education and Communities, Sydney Region Education and the Board of Studies for continuing to partner with us to present a wide range of events each year. Arts Education at the Seymour in 2013 – specialising in presenting great performing arts experiences for primary and secondary school students and teachers.

Susan (who initially calls herself Rita), seeking escape from the routine of her work and social life, enrols in an Open University English Literature course tutored by Dr Frank Bryant, a middle aged, alcoholic academic.

Over the course of one year Russell’s beautifully drawn characters have a profound effect on one another, Frank forced to re-examine his life and Susan finding a new self-confidence. Premiering in 1980, Educating Rita became an instant hit winning the Laurence Olivier Award for Best New Comedy. This heartwarming new production stars Sarah Robinson as Rita and Paul Holmes as Frank.

Created by award winning choreographer Shaun Parker, this powerful performance combines an intoxicating, free-flowing mix of ballet, break-dance, acrobatics and highly physical contemporary dance. Accentuated by a vibrant electro acoustic score by Nick Wales and Bree Van Reyk, the performers bring fun and danger to the fore in this exhilarating and moving dance work that is all about finding happiness.

Happy as Larry won 12 children’s Jury awards in Perth,the honourable New Zealand Banksy Award and was nominated for Most Outstanding Achievement in Choreography at the 2010 Australian Dance Awards.

Workshop & Show Package1. Dance Workshop So you want to be a performer? Kicking off with a short contemporary dance warm-up, Shaun Parker and company artists will take students through a series of highly physical phrases including repertoire from the show, before revealing how he creates arresting dance theatre through the use of theatrical tasks and improvisation by drawing on the talents and skills of the individual. Be prepared to be inspired! Suitable for secondary students across high school years 7-11 plus a very fun version for primary years 5 & 6, Elementary to Advanced level.

2. Digital Dance: get coached from an expert! Specifically tailored for years 10 and 11, dance students will interpret, in their own way, a ten minute Vimeo excerpt from Happy as Larry titled the Group Nonette. Shaun Parker and company artists will engage in digital coaching over several sessions to refine the skills of each group of students and their interpretation of the phrase. Elementary to Advanced level. Come and see Happy as Larry on any matinee and perform your Nonette after the show for Shaun and your peers! In our 3-hour Symposiums, Sport for Jove Artistic Director Damien Ryan and his team lead a dynamic process of analysis and exploration of these texts, linked to the demands of essay writing and the Board of Studies requirements every step of the way. Blending lecture and interactive performance from professional actors, your students will examine key scenes and characters, Shakespeare’s language, the plays’ textual integrity in performance, and experience the theatrical qualities of the work, lifting ideas and events from the page to the stage

Throughout the process, students will engage in discussion, ask and answer questions, experiment with their own ideas and witness the effect of different interpretations of the work. Our focus is to give students a highly relevant and deeply personal experience of these plays, fostering their personal voice in response to the work.

Callback provides a vital window to the outcomes of the HSC Dance syllabus and a professional learning activity for HSC Dance teachers, both in service and pre-service. Cool for School Club Cool for School is a unique series of concerts for secondary school students to experience outstanding jazz and improvisation in the context of a live club atmosphere. Over three concerts students will be introduced to six jazz styles from traditional to modern periods, played by the crème of Australia’s jazz. Students will learn about performance, composition and develop their listening skills as they engage directly with professional musicians and gain valuable insights into the history of jazz and the creative process of improvisation. The concerts will also feature structured Q&A sessions with New York MC and musician Phillip Johnston.

Classrooms Interest is being sought for interactive jazz and improvisation master-classes to be conducted on-site at your school. Classes can be divided in sections (rhythm and lead) where students will learn and play with Sydney’s jazz elite as they develop their ensemble playing and improvisation skills. Create High CREATE is a gifted and talented program for students in the Sydney Region. The program consists of three consecutive days of workshops, culminating in a high quality professional theatrical production.

The Project - Schools Industry Arts delivers relevant and interactive arts education opportunities in association with the Seymour Centre to empower schools and push the boundaries of arts education programs. Professional Development Within a working theatre context, primary and secondary teachers can undertake arts industry-standard professional development courses endorsed by the NSW Institute of Teachers, including: Music Theatre, Show Choir, Stage and Production Management, Large-Scale Performance, Teaching the VET Entertainment Syllabus.

Step 2: Payment Payment and final numbers are due three weeks prior to the event you are attending. Please ensure you pay no later than the due date on your invoice. Bookings made within three weeks of the performance will need to be paid in full within one week of confirmation.

Step 3: Teacher Resource Kits Teacher resource kits will be provided once you have paid your balance.

Step 4: On The Day Tickets will be available for collection from the Box Office on the day. Please arrive no later than 20 minutes prior to the start time of the performance. Parking The Seymour has easy drop off and pick up points for school buses on City Rd or Shepherd St, behind the Seymour (see map below)

Foyers and Courtyard Seymour has expansive foyer and courtyard spaces where students can safely gather before and after the show.

Victoria Park Victoria Park (pictured) is directly opposite the Seymour: a great place to take students after the show to eat lunch before the journey home.

Where Are We? Located conveniently at the Broadway end of the city, we’re close to Central and Redfern Stations, with great transport links, ample parking and plenty of nearby facilities.
