The University of Central Missouri transforms students into lifelong learners, dedicated to service, with the knowledge, skills and confidence to succeed and lead.
Future-Focused AcademicsThe world moves at a faster pace than ever before. UCM’s innovative programs use new technologies to keep students up to date on the latest changes in their fields of study.
Our faculty members are accomplished in their fields as well. They bring their experiences in industry and academia to their classrooms for our on-campus students in Warrensburg and Lee’s Summit, as well as to their virtual classrooms through our online programs.
Hands-on ExperienceLearning by doing is a cornerstone of our 150 academic programs. Through hands-on experiences, students take their knowledge from the classroom and apply it in real-life situations.
Whether it’s conducting research with faculty members, developing a business plan for a local company or battling it out in a national criminal justice competition, UCM students graduate well prepared for the future with practical, applicable experience.
Culture of ServiceFor more than 140 years, UCM’s motto, “Education for Service,” has been embodied by students who volunteer countless hours assisting communities, businesses and non-profit agencies.
This tradition continues today when student groups clear debris after a tornado or build homes for local families through Habitat for Humanity. Service has always been a foundation of the university. By learning at a university thatvalues that service,
UCM students continue to make an impact on their communities long after they graduate.
Global PerspectiveUCM values diversity in thought, culture and people. As a result, the university takes a worldly perspective on education and prepares students to thrive in a globalized economy.
UCM’s International Studies major examines global issues affecting human development, peace and security. The university’s study abroad programs connect students with more than 60 countries and 285 universities worldwide. UCM also has nearly 600 students from 47 different countries represented on campus. Experiencing these different ideas, cultures and people gives our students a unique perspective and prepares them for today’s global society.

Dr. Charles Ambrose University President
Charles M. Ambrose, Ed.D., became the 15th president of the University of Central Missouri on Aug. 1, 2010. A career educator who is a fervent advocate of servant leadership and engaged learning, he is committed to promoting academic quality, excellence in teaching and the collegiate experience.
During his first year at UCM, President Ambrose helped guide the institution through the building of a new Strategic Governance Model in partnership with the Association for Governing Boards. He also provided leadership through an extensive administrative and academic review process designed to provide a stronger, more viable educational experience for students, while also cutting operational costs.
Ambrose sought to build student enrollment, an effort that paid off in fall 2012 with the largest enrollment in the university’s 140-year history. To help make education more accessible, the university also entered new articulation agreements with institutions such as Metropolitan Community College and Linn State Technical College.
The president continues to build strong relationships with the men and women who serve this country. This includes the establishment of the Whiteman Advantage Program, which brings together personnel from Whiteman Air Force Base and the university to work cooperatively in creating new educational opportunities for military members. The university also developed the Military Tuition Package, which provides savings on an education for military men and women currently serving their country, as well as their spouses and dependents, and veterans.
Under his direction, the university developed a new strategic positioning initiative to provide a more articulated understanding of what makes UCM unique and helped guide the institution in establishing its future priorities. In fall 2012, Ambrose launched the new Missouri Innovation Campus, in collaboration with the Lee’s Summit R-7 School District and private industry, which will allow students to begin college during their junior year of high school and complete a degree in four years with little or no debt.
President Ambrose attended Furman University, where he was a four-year letterman and captain of the soccer team. After graduating from Furman with a bachelor’s degree in sociology, he earned two advanced degrees in higher education administration, a master’s from the University of Louisville and a Doctor of Education degree from the University of Georgia.
Ambrose and his wife, Kris, are active in the community and have participated in charitable bike rides to raise funds and awareness for poverty, hunger and disease.
The Ambroses have two children; Charlie, a college junior, and Kathryn, a high school senior.

Jerry Hughes Athletics Director
Under the leadership of Jerry Hughes, UCM’s athletics program has enjoyed unprecedented success, highlighted by the dual NCAA basketball championships in 1984 by the Mules and Jennies, the 1994 and 2003 NCAA baseball championships, and the 2003 women’s Intercollegiate Bowling Association national title. In 2005, Hughes was inducted into the Missouri Sports Hall of Fame.
Entering the 2012 fall semester, the Mules and Jennies have won 136 Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association championships, five national championships, had 44 other top four NCAA finishes, and made more than 238 NCAA post-season appearances during Hughes’ tenure. The Central Missouri athletic program also won the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association All-Sports Trophy each year from 1998-99 (the year of the award’s inception) until the award was discontinued in 2002-03. UCM finished second in the NACDA Director’s Cup in 2010-11, the best finish in school and MIAA history after finishing third the previous two years.
Hughes was named Central Region Athletics Director of the Year for the 1998-99, 2001-02 and 2010-11 seasons as selected by the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA). He is the first three-time winner - at any NCAA level--in the history of the Athletics Director of the Year program.
Hughes has been Central Missouri’s athletics director since Jan. 25, 1983. Prior to that, Hughes had served as associate athletics director since July of 1981. In 1991-92, he served as the Mules’ interim head basketball coach and guided the team to a 15-13 record.
Hughes has been a Division II member of the NCAA Executive Committee and chairman of the Division II Championships Committee. He also served a term as NCAA Vice President for Division II and has been a member of the NCAA Council, making him the only person to twice hold the highest-ranking office available to athletics administrators in NCAA Division II. Other NCAA committees on which he has served are the Membership Structure Committee, Administrative Committee, and Post-Season Football Subcommittee. He has chaired the NCAA Division II Management Council and Membership Growth Project Team and been a member of the NCAA Budget and Finance Committee and NCAA Administrative Review Panel, as well as the NACDA Sears Directors Cup Committee.
He has spearheaded fund-raising efforts for major renovations of the Central Missouri football and baseball stadiums, as well as the development of UCM’s South Recreation Complex and Keth Memorial Golf Course Clubhouse. He is the founder of the Las Vegas High Desert Classic, a highly regarded NCAA Division II basketball tournament, which was held each December for 17 years in Las Vegas, Nev.
In addition to his service at Central Missouri, Hughes has served as Regional Director of the Show-Me State Games, and on the Governor’s Council on Physical Fitness and Health.
Hughes has been at Central Missouri since October 1979, when he took a position as business placement director. The following year he became director of student recruitment. In 1981, Hughes was chosen for the new position of associate athletics director.
A native of Versailles, Mo., Hughes received his bachelor’s degree in physical education in 1971 from Central Missouri, with a minor in safety education. He was a three-year letterman on the Mules’ golf team, receiving All-MIAA honors in 1971. He also obtained a master’s degree in secondary school administration, which he received in 1979 from Central Missouri. Following his graduation in 1971, Hughes spent a year of active duty in the Army National Guard.
In 1972, he returned to his hometown and took a position as physical education instructor, head golf coach and assistant basketball coach at Morgan County R-2 High School. From 1977-79, he served as the school’s athletics director and assistant principal.
He and his wife, Vici, have four children – Greg, Chad, Parker, and Ashley. They have seven grandchildren – Tanner, Rylie, and Dalton from Greg and his wife Catrina; Fallon, Kaiser, and Logan from Chad and his wife Jennafer; and Sofija from Ashley and her husband Matt Ruzich. Vici works for UCM as Director of the Midwest Center for Urban Education and Charter Schools.

It could be said Kathy Anderson’s athletic life has come full circle. She was an All-American student-athlete at the University of Central Missouri, she’s had her number 32 retired in Jennies basketball, and is a member of the UCM Athletic Hall of Fame.
Now Anderson helps UCM student-athletes achieve their own goals, as she begins her eighth year at her alma mater. She was elevated to Senior Associate Athletic Director for Internal Operations and Senior Woman Administrator in 2011 after serving the previous six years as Associate Athletic Director for Internal Operations and Senior Woman Administrator.
Anderson had served previously as Assistant Athletic Director for Compliance and Student Services at Northwest Missouri State University.
Prior to assuming her role at Northwest, Anderson served a brief stint as admission and eligibility coordinator at the University of Washington. She added those duties in the summer of 2002 to her responsibilities as operations coordinator for men’s basketball for the Huskies. In addition, Anderson was assistant basketball coach in 2000 for the Seattle Storm and in 1998 for the Phoenix Mercury of the WNBA.
Her coaching career began in 1980, when she was hired as assistant women’s basketball coach at California State-Fullerton. She served there from 1980-85 before moving on to the University of Washington as assistant basketball coach from 1985-96, and as assistant director of basketball operations from 1996-98.
Anderson received a bachelor’s degree from UCM in 1980, graduating cum laude in physical education and mathematics.
While wearing the Cardinal & Black, she lettered four years in basketball, three years in softball, and once in track & field. In 1979-80 she was named second-team Academic All-American, and in 1980 she was honored as UCM Outstanding Senior Female Student-Athlete and Outstanding Senior in Physical Education. With the Jennies belonging to the Association of Intercollegiate Athletics for Women (AIAW) and playing today what would be considered a Division I schedule, she helped lead Jennies Basketball to an 82-31 record. She also was named to the Jennies Basketball All-Decade Team for 1970-80 and the Jennies Basketball Silver Anniversary Team for 1970-95.
Perhaps her most outstanding accomplishment was being a member of the USA Women’s National Basketball program for the three years leading to the 1980 Olympics which the USA boycotted. In 1977, Anderson served as captain of the USA Women’s Junior Basketball team to Taiwan. In 1978 and 1979, she was a member of the USA Women’s Senior Basketball teams that traveled to China, Hong Kong, South Korea, Japan and Russia. The University of Central Missouri has a long and rich history of excellence in athletics, both on the field of play and in the classroom.
Outstanding teams, combined with some of the finest facilities in Division II athletics give UCM’s students, faculty and staff one more aspect of college life to enjoy with pride.
Always a contender for conference titles, Central Missouri belongs to the 15-member Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association, which is recognized nationwide as one of the strongest conferences in all of NCAA Division II.
Since 1983, the tenure of Athletic Director Jerry Hughes, UCM has won or shared 136 MIAA championships, more than any other league school. All-time, the Mules have taken home 134 titles, while the Jennies are at 56.
Central Missouri has won five national championships since 1980 (men’s and women’s basketball in 1984--the first school in NCAA history to win both titles in the same season--baseball in 1994 and 2003, and women’s bowling in 2003), and seven overall.
The Jennies volleyball team has been to the
NCAA Tournament every season for the past 29 years, and the Mules have won 16 MIAA Indoor Track & Field titles in the last 18 years, and 10 of the last 12 MIAA Outdoor Track & Field crowns. The Mules baseball squad has made 19 consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances, including 13 Division II World Series berths in that span.
Seven UCM teams finished in the top 10 in the nation via ranking or place in 2011-12: volleyball finished in fourth along with women’s indoor and outdoor track. Mules golf finished in fifth, men’s indoor track and baseball were sixth and Jennies bowling finished in seventh.
Individually, UCM had 39 different All-American seasons and performances. They also took home four individual national championships in track and field. Lindsay Lettow captured the pentathlon (indoor) and heptathlon (outdoor) titles, while Kayla Muyskens won the shot put (outdoor) and Laban Sialo won the 5,000m run (indoor). Dalton Moberly in cross country and Shawn Boss in indoor track & field earned the NCAA Elite 89 Award for the top GPA at the Championships.
UCM student-athletes once again excelled in the classroom as they were awarded 245 academic awards from the MIAA, including 18 student-athletes earning Academic Excellence Awards for having 4.0 GPAs. In addition, 10 UCM student-athletes were named Academic All-Americans in their respective sports.

Warrensburg, Missouri is a friendly community of 18,000 people near the intersection of U.S. Highway 50 and Missouri Route 13. It is located just 40 miles southeast of suburban Kansas City, with its many cultural offerings, entertainment options and professional sports franchises. The county seat of Johnson County, Warrensburg is just four hours from St. Louis and three hours from Branson, Mo., with easy access by highway, Amtrak, or Greyhound bus. Other recreational opportunities include the beautiful Lake of the Ozarks 90 minutes to the southeast.
Warrensburg is a city that emerged from a frontier gathering place more than 150 years ago. In 1833, a blacksmith from Kentucky named Martin Warren chose a well-travelled spot along an Osage Indian Trail to build a cabin and set up his blacksmith shop. His shop served as an informal gathering place for local farmers. Three years after moving to Missouri, Mr. Warren’s shop was named the county seat of the newly created County of Johnson. The township was named Warren’s Burg in honor of the local blacksmith, and in 1855, the township was incorporated and became the City of Warrensburg. It is that same strong midwestern work ethic displayed by its founder, and the same friendly atmosphere shown by his neighbors that may be seen in Warrensburg today.
In the late 1800s and early 1900s Warrensburg was considered the Missouri Mule Capital because of the Horse and Mule Barn operated by the Jones Brothers on Railroad Street. Mules from the area won prizes at the State Fair (located just 30 minutes east in Sedalia, Mo.) and at even larger expositions like the one in St. Louis in 1904. The mule barn carried the motto, “Through these portals passed the meanest mules on earth.”
Warrensburg is home to many historic sites, including “Blind” Boone Park, the historic Johnson County Courthouse, the Missouri Pacific Train Depot, and many historical churches.
It is also the site of the Old Drum Memorial Statue, in honor of Old Drum, the hound shot and killed by his owner’s neighbor in 1869. Old Drum was eulogized by
George Graham Vest on September 23, 1870:“The one absolutely unselfish friend that man can have in this selfish world, the one that never deserts him and the one that never proves ungrateful or treacherous is his dog.”
Today the city’s Park Department has eight park areas with a total of 326 acres, and a Community Center which offers a wide variety of recreational activities. Two public golf courses are available in town -- one at the Hidden Pines Country Club, and another at Pertle Springs, operated by the University of Central Missouri.
Other attractions in the area include Powell Gardens, a 1,250 acre botanical garden just 12 miles west of Warrensburg on Missouri Highway 50 that contains hiking trails, picnic areas, and seasonal displays; Whiteman Air Force Base in Knob Noster, Mo., home of the B-2 Bomber; Knob Noster State Park; and the Missouri State Fair, held each August in Sedalia, Mo.
Of course, visitors to Warrensburg can also take in the exciting athletic events and various cultural experiences provided at the University of Central Missouri.

Women’s Bowling is one of the most recent additions to the National Collegiate Athletic Association’s 23 sponsored sports and became the organization’s 88th National Championship in 2004. Although this winter-season sport is relatively young by NCAA standards, its growth and bright future is reshaping the way bowling is viewed within the world of college athletics and among the general public . . .
From the Beginning . . .
In September 1994, the National Collegiate Athletics Association recognized Bowling as an “emerging sport” for Women’s Athletics. The classification was made to assist the NCAA member institutions in providing greater participation opportunities for female student-athletes. As an emerging sport, Women’s Bowling needed to reach a minimum of 40 or more sponsoring institutions to become a NCAA Championship sport.
Until Championship status was reached, the NCAA recognized the United States Bowling Congress – Collegiate Division as the governing body for the sport, and the Intercollegiate Bowling Championships as the National Championship of all women’s collegiate bowling programs. Between the years of 1994-2003, seven NCAA-sponsored programs earned spots as competing teams at the IBC, with two schools (including Central Missouri) winning National Championship titles.
In late 2002, the NCAA announced that its membership schools sponsoring the sport had exceeded the 40 school minimum to apply for Championships status. In January 2003, the NCAA passed history-making legislation to elevate Women’s Bowling to Championship status. The inaugural NCAA Women’s Bowling National Championship was held in Houston, Texas on April 12-14, 2004. The first-ever finals were contested between Central Missouri State University and the University of Nebraska, with Nebraska winning the first NCAA title.
Women’s Bowling – NCAA’s 88th Championship
. . . to the current Championships today.
Since 2004, the NCAA has hosted its all-division National Women’s Championships during the second full week of April. The 8-team event is the culmination of a full season of conference, regional and national competitions. The Championship, similar to the regular season, incorporates two formats of NCAA play – 5-person Team Matches and Baker Match Play.
Qualifying rounds of 5-person Team Pinfall Matches establish competition seeding, followed by Baker Match Play (4 of 7) for the Championship double - elimination bracket. The final two teams compete in the National Championship Finals, televised live on ESPNU and by tape delay on ESPN.
Selection to compete in the NCAA National Women’s Bowling Championships is done on an at-large basis by the NCAA Women’s Bowling Committee. As with all other NCAA sports, specific criteria (ex. win/loss records, strength of schedule, quality of wins, etc.) are used for the selection process. Only matches and competitions played against other NCAA sponsored programs may be used for the National Championship selection process. All teams, no matter what its normal Division classification, compete together in this Division I event.
Playing the NCAA way . . .
As with all of it’s other sports, the NCAA utilizes its own playing rules and administration guidelines. Although the USBC is recognized as a national governing body and resource, NCAA bylaws do not allow its competitions or the 50+ member schools to supersede NCAA rules that are based on outside organizations. Examples of differences between the two groups can be seen in student-athlete initial eligibility, continuing eligibility, recruiting, transfer rules, regular season structure (such as dates of play, formats of competitions, etc.), and other competition playing rules.
Recognition as a varsity sport . . .
As a member of the NCAA-sport family, coaches and student-athletes are provided with outstanding resources and experiences previously not always accessible for the sport of bowling. From all-around athletic skill development to student-athlete services and public relations support, women’s bowling is now breaking out of previous stereotypical molds. NCAA Bowling provides amazing opportunities for student-athletes to function at the highest levels of the academic and athletic spectrum . . . opportunities which are primary goals for student-athletes in any sport.

The 2012-13 season marks the 11-year anniversary of a special landmark for women’s bowling . . . the program’s elevation to varsity status. Throughout this period, Central Missouri has annually been recognized as one of the nation’s best among all National Collegiate Athletics Association schools. Due to post-season requirements, Central is limited in playing against women’s collegiate squads outside the NCAA system. However, UCM maintains membership with the sport’s governing body and uses select events against USBC teams to provide elite-caliber competition and experience during the year.
Student-athletes come from all over the United States to compete on the squads, bringing with them a wealth of talent and knowledge to share on and off the lanes. The ladies learn immediately that academics must be the first priority and life as a UCM student-athlete must be build around balance and
giving of yourself for your teammates, school and community. The women serve as tremendous ambassadors for UCM and learn a great deal about themselves and the United States during their travels.
Central Missouri student-athletes compete at an NCAA Division I level in this National Collegiate championship sport. Although the program is relatively young compared to others on campus, several teams and individuals have already left lasting impressions. Amber Gazverde became the first bowling athlete to be become National Player of the Year and inductee in the UCM Athletics Hall of Fame. Bryanna Caldwell and Tina Peak have earned spots on the U.S. National Teams while at
UCM. Bryanna Caldwell became the first female alumni of the varsity era to earn national event title in 2010.
Before varsity level play . . .
The women’s bowling program began on Central’s campus in 1971 and functioned as a club-sport until 2001. Throughout it’s years as a member of the United States Bowling Congress collegiate program, UCM competed against over 100 other junior college, AIAW, NAIA, NCAA and club-sport teams in an effort to win the women’s Intercollegiate Bowling Championships and Individual national titles of their era.
Central Missouri earned numerous tournament and conference titles in addition to qualifying for the national championships twelve times in the final twenty years of club-level play. Included as part of these years were a 2nd place finish at the 1998 Intercollegiate Championships, 4th place at the 1999 Championships and 5th place honors at both the 1990 and 2000 Championships. Two Central Missouri women also won collegiate Individual titles.
Multiple teams and elite-level players helped lay the foundation for the standard of success maintained today, including women such as Terry Eddy, Michelle Day, Cheryl Gibson, Jana Ohlendorf and Lisa Stack. These are just a few representatives of the women who earned the top conference and national awards of their time, including Player of the Year and All-American honors.
Ms. Stack was Central’s first four-year All-American. Stack was also the first player to earn a spot on the U.S. National Team and first to win an international gold medal. Ms. Olhendorf and Amber Gazverde won collegiate individual titles. Michelle Day has the honor of the highest women’s professional finish, just missing out on two different Women’s Professional Bowler’s Tour regional titles with 2nd place honors.
Women’s bowling is not the only game . . .
UCM continues to support a bowling program for men on campus as a club sport through the Office of Campus Activities. Their program was also established in the early 1970’s and is one of over 200 in the United States who annually compete to earn the USBC Collegiate men’s national title. Most men’s program in the U.S. function at this level.
The men have competed at the highest levels of collegiate play and were the #1 ranked team in the nation for a portion of the 1998 season. Their teams have won numerous top-5 awards in the regular and post-season, highlighted by winning the 1996 ACUI Team Championships and 3rd (1998) and 5th (2001) place finishes at the Men’s Intercollegiate Championships.
Accomplishments of alumni male players include a Professional Bowler’s Association title (’85), PBA Rookie of the Year honors (’85), a Team USA member and multiple collegiate All-Americans. Art Brown is the most recent Central male alumni who has come close winning a another PBA title, finishing 3rd at the U.S. Master’s Championships in 2006. Eight players are now or recently have been equipment staff members with Columbia 300, Ebonite, Brunswick, Storm and Hammer.

UCM Athletic Facilities The University of Central Missouri is not only proud of its excellent athletics programs, but it is equally proud of its many outstanding athletics facilities. Below is a brief description of UCM’s additional training and competition sites for varsity sports.
Audrey J. Walton Stadium at Vernon Kennedy Field
Home of Mules’ Football and the Mules’ and Jennies’ outdoor Track and Field teams, Walton Stadium at Vernon field is currently the largest football facility in the MIAA with a seating capacity of approximately 10,000. The three-level tower in the center of the
grandstand contains luxury box suites available for use by UCM donors. Reserved seating is available at mid-level and lower level areas, with general admission seating available on the west, north and east sides of the stadium. The press box is located on the top level of the tower.
James R. Crane Stadium at Robert N. Tompkins Field
One of the top baseball facilities in NCAA Division II, Crane Stadium at Tompkins Field is the home of the Mules’ Baseball team. Field improvements in the late 1990s added a locker room and coaches' offices for the Mules, an umpires' dressing room, new dugouts, permanent seats, a concession stand, a press box and lights to the already existing playing field. A new indoor weight training and workout facility was added to the site in 2004-05.
The South Recreation Athletic Complex
One of newest varsity field facilities at Central Missouri , the complex opened for use in the spring of 2001 and is located south of the main campus. It is the home for Jennies' Softball and Soccer programs and includes locker rooms and coaches’ offices. The facility also has three additional softball fields and three multi-use lighted fields for various events, including intramural contests.
Keth Memorial Golf Course (at Pertle Springs)
Keth Memorial Course is the home for the Mules’ and Jennies Golf teams, as well as Mules’ and Jennies’ cross country. Central Missouri’s 18-hole course is complete with a fully-equipped pro shop and the newly built Audrey J. Walton Clubhouse. Recent course renovations have added a heated, indoor hitting station, new driving ranges, putting greens and a short game area. The facility will be the future home to the Golf Course Management program when it becomes available at UCM.

As part of the newest campus addition, the facility is located in the lower level of the new Student Recreation & Wellness Center and Morrow / Garrison building renovations of 2010. The facility provides on-campus physician care for athletes, advanced injury rehabilitation, injury modalities and a wide variety of physical assessment and training equipment for Athletic Training staff and students. The Van Dam facility is the primary location for the UCM Athletic Training degree program, which includes six satellite offices.

The Recreation Center is the official practice and competition facility for Jennies Bowling. Located at the south end of the Gilbert Activities Center within the Elliott Union, the 10-lane facility provides high-quality training and skill development opportunities for the student-athletes. The UCM Recreation Center also is the home for the Men’s Bowling club-sport team, in addition to intramural bowling events, local community leagues, and campus special events.
University classes each semester for the Department of Kinesiology provide instruction for over 300 students each year and the Warrensburg Parks & Recreation youth programs attracts approximately 50-60 youth bowlers each fall and spring.
Ron Holmes ~ Head Coach
Coach Holmes enters his 12th season as varsity head coach of Jennies Bowling and his 22nd year coaching the bowling program at UCM. Holmes is looking for the squad to perform at the elite level once again, a standard of excellence for which Central Missouri has become internationally recognized. The experienced squad returns most of it’s starting members from a team which finished 7th at the 2012 NCAA Bowling Championships.
The seven-time Coach of the Year has led his UCM squads to the post-season each of the last 11 seasons, with five teams competing on the final day of the year for a National Championship. The 2003 Jennies team earned the program’s first national title at the Intercollegiate Bowling Championships, the NCAA’s recognized championship for varsity women’s bowling prior to 2004.
Since the program’s “varsity” birth in the fall of 2001, Holmes’ teams have also earned eight top-5 Championships finishes, including three national runners-up (2004, 2005, 2009). UCM has won 30 tournament titles and its players have earned 31 regular All-American awards during his tenure. In addition, players on these teams have been selected for 14 national honors, and 4 women have earned spots to represent the United States as members of the U.S. National Team (Jr. Team USA and Team USA). Promoting the NCAA’s motto of student-athletes, Holmes also stresses the importance of classroom work. His squads have maintained a team GPA of 3.34 during the last ten seasons and produced 74 Academic All-Americans.
Holmes has been also been instrumental in the growth of NCAA women’s bowling at the administrative level. Since 2003, he has functioned as a member of the NCAA Women’s National Bowling Committee, with the last five years as the Secretary/Rules Editor. From 2001-03, Holmes functioned as a Consultant for Varsity Bowling on behalf of College Bowling USA, including a short role as interim Co-Director. He also has served on several Coaches’ Association committees, most notably as the Vice-President for the NCBCA from 1999-2003.
Holmes currently serves on the National Tenpin Coaches Association All-American and Coaches’ Poll panels. A current USBC Gold-Level Coach candidate, Holmes has been a USBC-certified Coach since 1991 and was recognized from 2006 to 2010 as one of Bowler’s Journal International’s Top 100 Coaches.
Holmes’ first 11 seasons as head coach were spent at Central Missouri as a volunteer coach for the Women’s and Men’s club-sport bowling programs. During these seasons (1990-2001), both squads qualified for post-season competition every year and 11 teams (6 women, 5 men) earned spots to the National Championships. CMSU’s
teams also earned four Conference titles, two National Championship Finals awards, five top-5 Championships finishes, and produced 11 All-Americans, 19 Academic All-Americans and two Team USA system players.
An Independence, Missouri native, Holmes’ personal bowling career has also been quite successful. He was a four-year All-Conference player (1987-1990) and 1990 Conference Player of the Year for the Central Missouri men’s program. Holmes was also a member of the 1987 team which played in the National Championships and was the first CMSU player to roll a perfect game in intercollegiate competition in 1986. His personal accomplishments include honor scores of 300 (3), 800 (2), and a high average of 224.
Holmes earned his Bachelor’s (1990) and Master’s (1992) degrees in the areas of Physical Education, Exercise, and Sports Science at CMSU. In 1992, he accepted a teaching position as an Instructor of Health Education and taught full time until 2001 when he was named the school’s first Women’s Head Coach. Holmes continues to teach courses as a portion of his current position on behalf of the Department of Kinesiology. He is also a Coordinator of Athletic Special Events & Camps for the Department of Athletics.
His wife, Amy, is an elementary school teacher. They have two children, sons Evan, 15 and Cameron, 12.

2012-13 Preview Jennies Look to Experience for Success
The University of Central Missouri will look to their depth
and experience to propel them to the NCAA Women’s Bowling
Championships in 2012-13. The path of success begins with a
strong start to the season and a focus on
high standards of play.
The Jennies have three seniors and
a group of at several underclassmen
with college and elite tournament
experience to lead them this year.
UCM is looking to get back to the
NCAA Bowling Championships for the
tenth straight season and 12th
consecutive year they have competed in
the post-season finals since the
elevation to varsity status in 2002.
“I am excited and ready to get this
season started to see how the team can
perform,” Head Coach Ron Holmes
stated. “We have a very talented group
of ladies assembled this year that I
believe can compete with any team in the country. The key
will be to perform at a high level of play consistently against
the nation’s best teams. Our experience should be a great
resource,” head coach Ron Holmes said.
The Jennies have several new faces but will rely heavily on
their senior class to lead the way. “Our seniors have been the
foundation of this group for quite some time. Each of the
seniors have played a ton of matches and been asked to
contribute to almost every match during their entire careers. It
is amazing how much of a positive impact Kelli, Larissa and
Natalie have had on the success of the program.” Holmes said.
Leading the Cardinal and Black this season will be Natalie
Jimenez. The three-time All-American and team co-captain
will anchor the squad again this year. Last season the Rowland
Heights, California native was selected as a 2nd Team All-
American by the NTCA and was first
among the Jennies with a 200.3 average
but was limited by a back injury which
required off-season surgery and rehab.
“I think Natalie is really
looking forward to getting the year
started and proving she is healthy and can
play well again. Natalie had a very solid
season in 2011-12 by most athlete’s
standards but she would tell you she can
do better,” Holmes said. “We hope she
can come back and play at her previous
levels. Natalie will provide solid
leadership for the group this year.”
Central’s two other seniors that
will make a significant impact on this
year’s team are co-captain Kelli
Schroeder and Larissa Lantto.
Schroeder had a 196.8 game average
last year while Lantto’s mark was
192.3. “Both Kelli and Larissa made
great strides last year in improving
their level of play and will be a big key
to our success this year,” Holmes said.
Juniors Kara Richard and
sophomore Gabby Mayfield lead a
group of younger returning players, and both ladies will be
looking to build on their All-American performances from 2011
-12. Richard (198.9) was second in average last season while
Mayfield (192.8) was the top freshman. Mayfield also earned
NCAA Division-II Rookie of the Year honors. “Both players
will be relied on heavily to contribute to the Jennies’ success in
2012 and we believe they will do a great
job”, Holmes said.
UCM will have a talented and
diverse group of freshmen, led by Mary
Wells. A few ladies will see playing
time and Wells is slotted for a starting
spot. “Mary is a very gifted player and
far beyond her age for her skill level and
maturity. She will not need much
adjustment time and will make us better
right away, Holmes shared.”
The Jennies open up the 2012-2013
season in October in Wichita, KS.

Coach Holmes on Natalie Jimenez: ”Natalie is one of the best
female players in the country and know she is on a mission to finish her
collegiate career on a high note. She has a tremendous amount of
experience playing in high level events and can be a dominant force in
NCAA bowling. I look for Natalie to bounce back from her injury and
have a tremendous senior season as a player and leader. ”
As a Junior: Although she was slowed significantly with a lower back
injury for much of the season, Natalie earned NTCA 2nd-Team All-
American honors (200.3 avg.) and 2nd-Team All-Academic honors. She
earned four all-tournament team selections, including two MVP honors

Coach Holmes on Gabriella Mayfield: “Gabby started her career
at Central Missouri very well and I see no reason she will not continue
to grow and develop her skills this season. Although she performed very
well, I know she will tell you that she would like to become a better

will benefit from having a year of experience because she has expressed
an interest in the team’s leadoff position. We could use Gabby at the top
of the line-up to show the squad how the lanes are playing and it takes
confidence and maturity to fill that role. I look forward to watching
Gabby continue to expand her game and think she will do a great job.”

Coach Holmes on Jennifer Potts: “I am really excited to have Jennifer join our squad and believe she will
fill several different roles for us this year. Jennifer background of
playing on difficult lane conditions regularly should help her right away
and I believe this experience will shorten her transition to the collegiate
level. Jennifer also brings a very energetic, hard-working personality to
the squad. Jennifer’s physical game is pretty solid she had a real desire
to improve her skills. If Jennifer can expand her abilities to manage
ball speed and release options, it will make our squad much deeper and

Wichita, KS The Jennies opened the season as the #4 ranked NCAA team in the NTCA
all-division NCAA poll. Their first event of the 2011-12 season was a successful one as the squad went 13-1 in the 24-team field and won the event, defeating Wichita State University (the #1 USBC women’s team) for the title. Three women earned spots on the All-Tournament Team, with freshman Gabriella Mayfield (201.9) earning Most Valuable Player honors. Up against a very talented northeast region field which included 16 of the top 20 teams in the country, the squad bounced back quite well with a 5th place finish and won two of their final three matches to end on a high note. UCM finished with an 8-5 record and won several important out-of-region matches. The squad was led by Natalie Jimenez with a 197.2 average, finishing in the top 10 of all athletes competing. Kelli Schroeder was second on the squad with a 193.5 average.
Dec. 2-4 St. Paul’s College Jeannette Lee Invitational— Midlothian, VA The #4 Jennies headed back out to the northeast region for their next event, competing in the Jeannette Lee Invitational near Richmond, VA. The 16-team field traditionally provides great competition against other NCAA Division II schools and further high-level matches against other post-season caliber teams from the region. Central Missouri enjoyed a great weekend of competition and won their second tournament of the season, finishing with a perfect 12-0 record for the trip. The trip included wins over #3 Fairleigh Dickinson and #9 Sacred Heart University in match play. Junior Natalie Jimenez was the MVP for the event, averaging an impressive 226.2, with sophomore Kara Richard also making the All-Tournament Team with an average of 223.0. Junior Larissa Lantto also finished in the top 10 of the event with an average of 194.8.

The #6 ranked Jennies opened the 2012 NCAA portion of their season with a 3rd place finish at the 16-team Arkansas State Mid-Winter Classic. UCM finished the event with a 9-4 record and several high-quality wins. The ladies continued their solid play with a record of 11-2 but just missed defending their title for a third year, finishing in 2nd place to Arkansas State University in this total pinfall format event. The Jennies were paced by freshman Gabby Mayfield, who won Most Valuable Player honors with a tremendous average of 237.8 for the tournament. Sophomore Kara Richard (209.6) and Junior Kelli Schroeder (207) also led the squad with outstanding performances.
Feb. 3-5 Prairie View ITRC Invitational— Arlington, TX
The #6 Jennies headed south in the first weekend of February for a new event hosted by Prairie View A&M University at the Team USA Training and Research Center, USBC’s ITRC. The state-of-the-art facility provided great a great competition backdrop as 10 of the top 20
team in the country battled for the title. In the end, UCM finished with a 9-4 record and 5th place finish for the weekend. Juniors Larissa Lantto (212.8) and Kelli Schroeder (207) led the individual performances of the squad.
Feb. 17-19 Morgan State James Brown Invitational—Baltimore, MD UCM traveled to northeast region one final time for the year in an effort to improve their competitive resume. Traditionally one of the largest event during the season in the country, the 23-team field boasted 16 of the top 20 teams in the country. Feb. 24-26 Alabama A&M Holiday Classic—Bessemer, AL
UCM traveled south again to a suburb of Birmingham, Alabama for the Holiday Classic. Traditionally one of the year’s stronger events in the Central region, the Holiday Classic provides a great test for the last portion of the year. The Jennies did not play very well during the entire weekend, losing their last four matches of the event. Although they finished in 4th place for the 9-team field, they had a final record of 5-6. The Jennies placed two players among the top athletes of the event, with Natalie Jimenez earning MVP honors with a 218.6 per game average. Larissa Lantto (212.8) and Kara Richard (209.4) also earned All-Tournament Team selections for their performances.
Mar. 16-18 Vanderbilt Univ. After two solid days of competition, the Jennies qualified at the #2 seed. The final day of the regular season did not go well and the Jennies lost all three matches, slipping to 4th place in the final standings. Junior Natalie Jimenez led the team with a 196.5 average, with freshman Gabby Mayfield (193.3) and senior Kim Wallace (189.8) providing solid efforts as well. 2011-2012 Season Recap
Apr. 12-14 NCAA Women’s National Championships— Cleveland, Ohio
The Jennies believed their regular season body of work during for 2011-12 was good enough put them in a position to be considered for the National Championships. On March 28, they were granted their wish as they were selected to compete as one of only eight teams for the 2012 NCAA Women’s Bowling title.
The #7 Jennies came to the Championships with great optimism and felt their regular season performances would benefit their post-season efforts. UCM started the qualifying matches well with a victory over Valparaiso, followed by losses to UMES and Vanderbilt. However, they rebounded to claim victories over Fairleigh Dickinson and Nebraska and were in the middle of standings. Unfortunately fatigue and loss of focus cost Central Missouri as they suffered two losses to Arkansas State and Sacred Heart, with the poor performance of the last match dropping their scores to the #7 seed after Day One. Natalie Jimenez finished as the high performer of the squad, averaging 207.5 and good for 5th overall. Kara Richard finished 2nd for the Jennies with a 195.5 average and a top 15 finish.
Day two would find Central Missouri against a very familiar foe this season —the University of Nebraska, the #2 seed after qualifying. The Jennies never could find consistency during the match and lost 0-4. Round two of the double-elimination format positioned UCM against #6 Arkansas State University. The Jennies would start very well and get out to an early, large lead in the match at 3-1. Unfortunately they could not maintain their level of play and lost 3-4, thereby eliminating them from the competition. Central Missouri finished the season with an 94-45 record.
The 2011-12 Jennies accomplished a large number of things during the season, including two tournament titles and finishing every event of the regular season in the top five. The ladies also gained a great deal of valuable experience and solidified several roster positions for the future. Junior Natalie Jimenez (2nd Team), Sophomore Kara Richard (2nd Team) and Freshman Gabriella Mayfield (Honorable Mention) were recognized by the National Tenpin Coaches Association for their outstanding play during the season as All-Americans.
Mayfield was selected as the DII Rookie of the Year. Gabriella averaged 192.8 for the season and won two tournament MVP honors (Mid-States Classic and Big Red Classic). Jimenez finished 2nd in the voting for Division II Player of the Year and her average of 200.3 was tops for the team this season. Jimenez and Richard were both also named to the Capital One / CoSIDA Academic All-District Teams for their excellence in both academics and athletics. Eight UCM student-athletes earned NTCA Academic All-American honors.

Since its elevation to varsity status in 2001, UCM has earned 10 Championship berths.
UCM has made 31 post-season appearances during it’s history.
Central Missouri is commonly recognized for developing elite-level players and providing them an opportunity to showcase
their talents. Throughout the program’s history, several members have been honored as one of the finest collegiate players in the
country by being selected as an All-American. The various Coaches’ Associations select the top athletes of each season for these
awards, with the top five women of the group earning 1st Team honors, followed by 2nd Team, 3rd Team, and Honorable Mention.
In just the last decade, 15 Central Missouri women have earned a total of 28 regular All–American honors. All-American
voting is not done by separate NCAA divisions, thereby identifying the athletic accomplishment as truly the nation’s best.

Natalie Jimenez was one of the nation’s best during the 2010-11
season, finishing as runner-up in the voting for all-division Player of
the Year and earning 1st-Team All-American honor in addition to her
NCAA Division II accolades. Jimenez averaged 206.5 for the season,
earning five All-Tournament Team selections and finishing in the top
10 of all regular season tournaments she competed in this season.
Jimenez averaged above 215 for two events during the season,
including the UMES Hawk Classic where she finished with a 225.4 per
game average.
Bryanna Caldwell was a tremendous player from the very beginning of her college career
and became the first women’s collegiate player in any division to earn national Player of the
Year honors all four season of competition.
In 2004-05, Caldwell completed her freshman season by earning the national Player of the Year
award and 1st-Team All-American honors for multiple NCAA divisions. Bryanna averaged
200.5 her first year of NCAA competition, receiving two MVP awards for her achievements,
including a 228.0 per game performance at the MN-Mankato Invitational. Caldwell earned eight
All-Tournament Team honors this season and anchored the squad to a national runner-up finish
at the 2005 NCAA Championships.
Bryanna continued the outstanding display of skills in 2005-06 by earning Division II Player of the Year honors and
finishing fifth in the voting for athletes of all divisions. The award also earned her another 1st-Team All-American selection
by the NTCA. Caldwell excelled to receive six All-Tournament Team honors during her sophomore campaign and was
selected for three Most Valuable Player event honors while averaging 207.5. During her MVP-level performance at the MN-
Mankato Invitational, Bryanna rolled a perfect 300 game. Caldwell again led the Jennies to the 2006 NCAA Championships
where they finished fifth.
The 2006-07 season just kept the cycle rolling along for Caldwell as she earned her third straight
Player of the Year honor and finished third in the voting for consensus national player of the
year. With this selection, Bryanna also received 1st-Team All-American
honors. Caldwell played in 120 matches this season, averaging 201.4 for the
year and tallied six more All-Tournament Team selections. Her best of two
MVP event performances for the regular season came at the Alabama A&M
Holiday Classic where Caldwell averaged 219.6. At the 2007 NCAA
Championships Caldwell averaged 229.2 (4th individually) and led her team
to another fifth place finish.
For her 2007-08 senior season, Bryanna continued her tremendous effort by
earning a fourth Player of the Year honor and 1st-Team All-American
selection, while finishing fourth in the voting for the all-division award.
Bryanna’s 4-time selection made her the first player at any level in the history
of the college bowling to earn this distinction. Caldwell averaged 201.1 for the
season, including six All-Tournament Team selections. One of Caldwell’s two
MVP performances came during her final home tournament where she
averaged 218.4. At the 2008 NCAA Championships, Caldwell finished sixth
individually and anchored her squad to a third straight 5th place finish.
Individuals who perform at an exceptional level during the season are selected as the National Player of the Year. Awards can
be presented by division only or for all divisions combined. Central Missouri has been fortunate to have several women recognized for
their elite year-long performances and two women have been selected as the consensus Women’s Collegiate Player of the Year.
Amanda Falk concluded her wonderful career at
Central Missouri in 2010 by not only leading a very
young squad to but also earning Division II Player of
the Year honors. Amanda finished fifth in the
voting for national player of the year and earned 1st-
Team All-American recognition among all NCAA
student-athletes. Falk averaged 196.0 for the 130
matches in 2009-10, receiving the Most Valuable
Player for the Big Red Classic and earning All-
Tournament honors at three additional events this
season. Perhaps Amanda’s greatest contribution of 2010 was competing at an
elite level year individually while captaining a team of 15 freshmen and
sophomores back to the NCAA post season.

Four seniors helped lead the 2009 squad to the national finals of the NCAA Bowling Championships
Amber Gazverde was the dominant women’s player throughout
2002 for all divisions, averaging an incredible 212.0 for 85 regular
games throughout the season. Gazverde won five All-Tournament
Team awards during her sophomore year, including Most Valuable
Player honors at the Mid-States Championships where she rolled a
300 game and 804 3-game series. Amber was the consensus choice for
national player of the year by both organizations who provide the
awards (NCBCA and BWAA).
Amber finished her senior year with a tremendous success as well,
earning national player of the year honors for a second time as
awarded by the NTCA. Gavzerde led her squad to the inaugural 2004
NCAA Women’s Bowling Championships where her team finished as
the national runner-up. During the season, Gazverde averaged an
amazing 217.2 for the entire year and earned five All-Tournament
Team selections. Amber averaged 223.2 at the 2004 NCAA
Championships and was selected to the All-Tournament Team.
Although it is not formally listed as such, special recognition goes to
Lisa Stack for her outstanding performance during the 1999-2000
season in which she was recognized as the top female player for all
women’s division programs that season. The 1st-Team All-American
led her squad with an average of 205.0 for the season and won All-
Tournament Team honors in 7 of the 10 events she played her senior
year. Stack led a very young Jennies team to a 4th place finish at the
Women’s Intercollegiate Team Championships, while being selected to
the 2000 ITC All-Tournament Team. Missy (Belinder) Parkin was
awarded the formal player of the year honors in 2000 although she
competed as a member of her men’s team for her school. Stack
received the top award for women’s only student-athletes.

Recognition for outstanding play by first-year student athletes is given by the Coaches’ Association as the National Rookie of
the Year for each respective division. Central Missouri has been fortunate to have six players selected in the last decade.
Kara Richard finished as the top rookie for NCAA Division II in 2011 and
an Honorable Mention All-American for all divisions. Kara immediately stepped
into the starting line-up as a freshman and played in all 10 contests, starting 119
matches. Richard’s season average was 195.7, finishing six tournaments among
the top 15 athletes in all divisions and earning MVP honors at the Big Red Classic
where she scored a blistering 233.0 per game. Richard also earned a spot in the
UCM record books, posting top 10 spots in two single-season categories.
Natalie Jimenez was recognized as the top rookie for all NCAA divisions in
2010, including Division II. The freshman immediately stepped into the starting
line-up for Central Missouri and earned 2nd Team All-American honors for her
efforts. She played in all 11 events and started 123 matches. Jimenez averaged
191.4 for the season, finishing four of the tournaments among the top 15 athletes
in all divisions and earning Most Valuable Player honors at the Alabama A&M
Holiday Classic where she averaged an outstanding 230.4 per game.
Jamie Mitchell was recognized as the top rookie for NCAA Division II in
2007. Jamie’s first year at Central produced positive results right away as she
played in all 9 tournaments and started 118 matches. Mitchell averaged 188.8 for
the season, finishing six of the tournaments among the top 15 athletes in all event
fields. Jamie earned All-Tournament Team honors at the DII/DIII Challenge in
Virginia and the Southern Classic in Louisiana. Mitchell also finished in the top
three of several team statistical areas for the 2006-07 season.
Bryanna Caldwell burst onto the NCAA bowling scene as a freshman and
started one of the most decorated careers of any female player in collegiate
bowling. Not only was she the top rookie in 2005, she was also selected as a 1st
Team All-American for multiple divisions. Caldwell immediately stepped into the
anchor position for Central Missouri and played in all 10 contests and started 102
matches. Bryanna averaged 200.5 for the season, earning a team record eight All-
Tournament Team selections. Caldwell also led the Jennies to the 2005 NCAA
Championships this season and a national runner-up finish.
Tina Peak’s first year as a member of the Jennies was a very memorable
one. Tina’s selection as the top rookie for 2004 was in addition to being honored
as a 1st Team All-American for multiple divisions. The freshman immediately
stepped into the starting line-up for Central and played in all 10 contests, starting
119 matches. Tina averaged 205.6 for the season, earning four All-Tournament
Team awards and MVP honors at the MVSU Classic. Peak finished her first year
with a tremendous experience at the NCAA Championships, averaging 229.3,
rolling a perfect 300 game, and helping the Jennies to a national runner-up finish.
Gabriella Mayfield finished as the top rookie for NCAA Division II in 2012
and an Honorable Mention All-American for all divisions. Gabby immediately
stepped into the UCM line-up as a freshman and competed in 138 matches. She
finished the season with an average of 192.89, earning Most Valuable Player
honors at the Mid-States Classic and the Big Red Classic. While earning the MVP
award in Nebraska, Gabby averaged a very impressive 237.8. Gabby also finished
in the top 15 of All-Events for three contests.
Several of Central Missouri’s women have earned the opportunity to represent the United States of America as members
of the Team USA national (Team USA) and junior national (Jr. Team USA) squads. A total of 24 medals have been won by
Central Missouri female players and alumni in international competition, including a total of 12 gold medals.

From Student-Athlete … to Alumni
Central Missouri provides tremendous opportunities
for student-athletes to prepare for success during their
athletic and academic careers.
UCM helps prepare their future alumni to work as part
of a team and function as resourceful, well-trained partners in business.
Multiple offices provide student-athletes with the tools
necessary for transition from the fields and courts to
the office, classroom and boardroom. Numerous former bowlers have stepped directly into the “real”
world upon graduation - these ladies are making vital
contributions in their fields every day. Many former players still compete at elite levels in the sport.

Post Season Success through the Years
Central Missouri Women’s Bowling has accomplished many things
throughout its history, including a high level of success in the post-season. The
Jennies are one of only three teams to qualify for every NCAA Bowling
Championship and have played in the Finals five of the last ten years. In
addition to the NCAA years, the women have earned their way to another two
Championship-day appearances during the last 15 years. Along the way, various
story lines have developed and great experiences are worth reflecting on . . .
2003 . . . An Unlikely Cast Shall Lead Them . . .
During the 2002-03 season, the Jennies played very well during the regular
season and had earned a record of 144-25. They won three regular season tour-
naments and top-5 finishes in three others. Eight individuals, including 2002
National Player of the Year Amber Gazverde, earned event honors during the
season. For a team that returned all but one starter from the previous year’s 3rd
place Championship finish, this experienced squad was very good, but was not considered as a front runner for the national title. The team began the post-season by
earning their way to the national finals through a 2nd place finish at the West Sectional
Championships. The Jennies entered the Championships ranked #5 in the nation.
The 2003 Championships were held in Tulsa, Oklahoma on April 24-26. During the
qualifying rounds, Central’s women experienced very sub-par performances and buried
themselves in 12th place by the end of the first day. At the start of Day 2, a line-up
change resulted in the removal of the left-handed Gazverde, and a complete shuffling of
the roster order. Inserted into the anchor position was senior Tracie Driggs, a part-time
starter who had performed very well during the preliminary rounds. The first match
against #3 ranked Nebraska began with two game
losses, followed by four straight victories in the
best 4 out of 7 match. Next came match victories
over #2 ranked West Texas A&M University and
#1 ranked Wichita State University, winning 10
games in a row and 15 of their last 16 games. Championship Day found Central Missouri undefeated and in the Winner’s Bracket against #1
Wichita State for a second time. Although they had been defeated on the previous day, WSU had
won their way back through the Consolation Bracket to reach the Semi-Finals and had knocked
CMSU out of the exact same position at the 2002 National Championships. This time however,
Central never wavered and was up to the challenge. The Jennies defeated Wichita State for a
second straight day (4-1) to advance to the Championship Finals against Florida State University.
Florida State had earned their way to the Championship match by finishing second after the
qualifying rounds and winning their side of the bracket Saturday morning. The Finals would be a
winner-take-all best 2 out of 3 Baker Match, with FSU as the higher seed. Feeding off a very high
level of emotion and enthusiasm, Central Missouri rolled strikes on four of their first five shots and
won Game 1 by a score of 199 - 183. During Game #2, lane changes and great shot making by FSU
forced CMSU into an early deficit, ultimately losing 177 - 233.
At the start of Game #3, Central made several adjustments to compensate for the quickly
changing lane conditions. A spare by senior Becky Graffia and key strikes by senior Erin Landford
and sophomore Amber Lester propelled Central Missouri to an early lead. Two more spares and
another Landford strike extended the lead margin. With a filled 10th frame by senior Tracie Driggs
and junior Amber Gazverde, the ladies had sealed their 187 - 123 victory and first National title.
Even without their traditional starting line-up, Central Missouri found a way to use their team
depth and talents to accomplish the ultimate goal. For her outstanding performance throughout the
National Championships, Tracie Driggs was named to the 2003 Women’s All-Tournament Team. All photos provided by USBC

2004-05 . . . Different Cast, Same Incredible Performances. . .
In each of the last two years, CMSU had lost four starters from their line-up due to graduation or personal issues. This season’s team would have to get it done with a young and very inexperienced cast – and they certainly exceeded expectations. The group completed the season using 2 to 4 freshmen and in the starting line-up. They finished the season with a record of 89-21 and were led by All-American sophomore Tina Peak and National Player and Freshman of the Year, Bryanna Caldwell. Senior Alecia Hefter, a 2004 All-American,
rejoined the roster during the spring for the post-season run.
At the NCAA Championships, Central used its youthful talent to stay near the top of the leader board and finished as the #4 seed after qualifying. During this performance, Tina Peak again attained perfection by rolling a 300 game and became the only woman to ever shoot two 300s at the NCAA Championships. A first-round loss to New Jersey City University (2-4) in the double-elimination bracket would force Central Missouri to take a different path to the finals this year. (continued next page)
2008-09 . . . A Gutsy Bunch of Athletes . . .
In 2008-09, the team was going to have to win the title a completely different way – succeed without a dominant player. Gone were a four-time national player of the year and three starters who had led the team for several seasons. This squad would have plenty of experience with five seniors, but most of this year’s ladies were former role players with limited starting experience. The upperclassmen and a group of freshman were put into action immediately. Through lots of growing pains and hard work, UCM finished the season with a record of 84-36 and were led by All-American Senior Alyssa Surges and former NCAA Division II Freshman of the Year Jamie Mitchell.
Central Missouri competed in the post-season with a renewed sense of purpose after likely being one of the last teams selected for the NCAA Championships. The squad battled through the early rounds with great energy and finished qualifying as the #6 seed. On Day 2, UCM began its bracket play with a 4-0 victory over 2008 Champion Maryland-Eastern Shore, but would fall in the second round to eventual semi-finalist Delaware State 1-4. However, the team rebounded quickly to defeat 2007 Champion and top-ranked Vanderbilt University 4-0 to advance to the national semi-finals. Fairleigh Dickinson University, the 2006 Champion, would be the Jennies’ next opponent. Central would defeat FDU 4-1 on Friday to advance and would defeat FDU again 4-2 on Championship Saturday for it’s fifth trip to the title match since 1998.
Even though the team played with tremendous heart throughout the Championships, UCM could not maintain it’s momentum and fell to top-seeded Nebraska (2-4) and finished as the National Runner-Up. For her outstanding efforts throughout the Championships, Theresa Christopher was selected to the Championships All-
Tournament Team.

Great rebound performances and victories against Sacred Heart (4-2), Maryland-Eastern Shores (4-1), and Bethune—Cookman University (4-3) propelled the Jennies to Championship Day for the third straight season. In the Championship Semi-Finals, CMSU soundly defeated Fairleigh Dickinson University 4-0 to earn a trip back the NCAA finals.
Unlike last year, Central Missouri would come into Championship Day with one loss and would have to defeat the #1 seed twice to win the title. Although the team played with tremendous effort, CMSU could not defeat the defending national champion Nebraska squad (2-4), and finished national runner-up for a second straight year. For her performance, Peak was selected to the Championships All-Tournament Team.

2003-04 . . . Trying to Make NCAA History . . .
The 2003-04 season began with the Jennies as the reigning National Champions – however, this season was to be a completely new and different experience as the NCAA had now adopted Women’s Bowling as a Championship sport. Therefore, all NCAA teams would be competing for the first-ever NCAA Bowling title.
The team finished the season with a record of 72-23, became the first NCAA team to shoot a 300 Baker game and was one of the favorites to win the first ever NCAA Championship. Leading the way for the squad was senior Amber Gazverde, the 2004 DII-III National Player of the Year. In addition, the roster included Tina Peak, 2004 Freshman of the Year and three other members of the 2003 national championship squad.
At the NCAA Championships in Houston, TX, Central battled to stay at the top of the leader board throughout the qualifying rounds and emerged as the #1 Seed for the Championship Bracket. Bracket victories over Winston-Salem State (4-1), New Jersey City (4-2) and Nebraska (4-3) vaulted Central into Saturday. Championship Day found CMSU vs. Nebraska again, as they had won their way through the Consolation Bracket to reach the Finals.
Unfortunately, CMSU could not finish their run, as Nebraska defeated the Jennies in both Championship matches (2-4, 2-4) to earn the first NCAA title. For her performance, Amber Gazverde was selected to the NCAA Champion-
ships All-Tournament Team.
Tina Peak also put her name in the Championship record books as one of two individuals to roll a perfect 300 game during qualifying.

2001-02 . . . The Start of a Very Successful Decade . . .
2001-02 was the first year the Jennies squad had been elevated to varsity status at Central Missouri but the team was very experienced and one of the top teams in the country. The squad returned four starters from the previous season, including All-American Amber Gazverde and top recruit Erin Landford. The 2001-02 season went extremely well for the Jennies, earning a record of 98-22 and entering the post-season as the #4 ranked team in the country. Amber Gazverde was the consensus 2002 National Player of the Year, averaging over 212 for the regular season.
The 2001-02 Championships were held in Buffalo, NY and the qualifying rounds placed the Jennies as the #7 seed headed to match play. Bracket play for the Central Missouri went very well on Day 2 as they defeated everyone they faced (Sacred Heart 4-1, Eric CC 4-1, Indiana St. 4-0) and left the Jennies as the only undefeated team in their side of the bracket.
Championship Day began with Central facing off against #3 seed Wichita State
University. After a highly competitive match, the Jennies fell to WSU 3-4. Although they only had one bracket loss, CMSU was out of national championship contention.
In the consolation finals, Central faced off against Florida State University. Although they started the contest very slow due to the previous loss, the team rebounded to win the match 4-3 and earn 3rd place honors. For her performance, Sarah Kelly earned All-Tournament Team honors.

1997-98 . . . Before the NCAA, the Championships Experience . . .
Although just prior to reaching Varsity status, the 1997-98 team deserves special recognition of coming within a whisper of earning the team’s first national championship. Due to being prior to NCAA competition, the team played in the same post-season system as the 2001-03 squads. The Jennies finished the regular season ranked #5 team in the country and were led by two-time All-American Lisa Stack and former Rookie of the Year Erin McDonnell.
The Championships were held in Madison, WI, with final matches being held in the first-ever college stadium fieldhouse. The squad finished the qualifying rounds as the #5 seed, with Theresa Dames leading the early team performances. Championship Saturday involved Central
defeating #2 seed California State—Fresno and #4 seed Sacred Heart University to reach the final match. The ESPN-televised finals pitted the Jennies against top-seeded and #1 ranked Morehead State University in a two-game, total pinfall match.
Although the team started the match slowly in Game 1, Central quickly made up the difference to begin Game 2 with
three consecutive strikes and held the lead into the middle portion of the final game.
Unfortunately MSU rolled key strikes during the two final frames, with ‘98 National Player of the Year Kelly Kulick rolling a double in the 10th frame to win the title (374-390).
