2 Club Activities & Around the Members NOVEMBER: We met at Marguerite & Bill’s in air conditioned comfort. Again we were treated to lots of orchids and lots of bromeliads - they are certainly multiplying and the mix of colours and shapes demand a closer look - members could not resist looking!* New members Shirley and Liz were treated to some extremely well grown bromeliads in both the mini show and Popular Vote. Brendan’s orthophytum was bright red glowing like it was afire. See Dave’s excellent orthophytum article in ‘Bromelcairns‘2012 #2. * Gloria showed Orthophytum ‘Warren Loose’, four specimens in one pot, the green inflorescences starkly contrasting with the brown leaves.* Cryptanthus ‘Ruby’ shown by Kath and Darryl were healthy plants, dark red with good conformation. Wendy’s ‘It’ was four almost identical plants with good colour. * Wendy also brought in a large pot of Acanthostachys strobilacea, a plant now seldom seen. Half way down the long terete leaves inflorescencesformed like small orange cones. ‘terete‘ = circular in transverse section, imperfectly cylindrical because it may taper both ways. Acanthostachys = thorny spike. strobilacea = resembling a cone. ! Tillandsia duratii by Bob Hudson When removing offsets from tillandsias we usually remove the old leaves from the mother plant to reveal the base of the offset and enable us to remove it without damage. Tillandsia duratii is a little different from most other tillandsia. On duratii the offset is deeply attached and about ten leaves are tightly wrapped around the offset. These leaves should not be removed but tugged to stretch a little to help release the pup. Then estimate the length of the pup stem and gently cut through that leaf with a scalpel or sharp knife to reveal the base of the pup. Gently move the pup from side to side with upward pressure and the pup should release and come free. Roots grow only on seedlings, not on offsets. The plant relies on it’s leaf end curls to cling to a host. With the leaves still intact the mother should give another pup or two.

* Scratched? Bromeliad spines in your hands and arms? Scrub using ‘Curash’ Baby Shampoo, dry, & add ‘Curash’ Baby Powder. The zinc will relieve the itch and aid healing. *Plant tags - write with either Pilot SCA UF pen or Stabilo 2008 pencil, press hard. The pointed tag end in the mix will keep the markings - also write the name shortened there - eg Neo. ‘Charm’.* Page #8 has an article by Andrew Flower of Wellington, New Zealand, taken from his new e-pub tillandsia magazine “The Potting Shed Observer” an excellent quality 8 pages on tillandsias. I suggest all Tillandsia Freaks should subscribe, it has a wealth of information and wonderful photographs of ‘man plants’. !!! 5 more ... Bits & Pieces

“Thanks for offering your photos of Neoregelia 'Small World' to the BCR. Their conformation is so perfect they look like button-hole medallions seen at shows. Probably the original photo was from the breeder Grace Goode as a scanned print in the 1980s long before digital photos took over. Maria, if you can email me a blooming JPG photo later on (a close-up of the inflorescence) that would be great.  It's always a pleasure receiving unsolicited photos for the BCR, and yours show how well  they grow in the tropics. Regards,Geoff Lawn BSI Cultivar Registrar.” [email protected]************************************Confidor: Several members have used Confidor against bromeliad scale and claimed it was very successful. It came in sachets, the powder to be mixed with water and sprayed onto the plants, the mixture to be all used on the day of mixing. While those members highly recommended it, my problem was I am continually interrupted and usually disposed of half a tank. Then shopping at Coles, there was a 750mil spray bottle of Confidor, plus some tablets and it was on special at $9.90! I then checked Bunnings and they have it for under $9. Yes it works but ... it has a warning label on the use directions - obey it!! It is also systemic, ie., it is sucked into the plant growing system and therefore can be sucked into your body! We can always get new plants but there is only one You, and we want You!************************************

Water Quality: Lesley has moved to Mareeba and spends most of her free time gardening. She was horrified to see brown patches at the leaf base of her vrieseas, other genera were ok. She realized the fern house was on bore water and changed it to town water with good results. Water quality is really important, I always remember Pam Koide-Hyatt saying “The more pure the water, the more crud it removes from your body.”************************************

Birds: We have lots of Torres Straight Pigeons around Cairns this year, they come down for nesting. Ours came back to the tree but I think Treazure has put them off, she just won’t accept them in the tree. They built half a nest, I was happier as it is over the neighbour’s yard and the droppings are not on my driveway, but she isn’t sitting! Now about the Willy Wagtails - a nest in the umbrella, they are currently feeding three chicks and the parents share the food gathering and nest sitting. We can go near it but not Treazure, she gets dive bombed and her hair pulled!************************************

Summer has started, it is getting hot and sticky, just when the offsets are ready to be taken off. If you have good drainage your bromeliads will enjoy the rain and shine like jewels. Remember John Catlan’s words - “When it is humid and raining it is good rooting weather”! So true, the white roots just pop out.

This beautiful Neoregelia ‘Small World’ was grown by Maria and entered into the August mini show. Maria was surprised that it won! Great Poobah, Grace Goode OAM, produced this plant before 1991. I checked the picture on Bromeliad Cultivar Register on http://registry.bsi.org and suggested that Maria should send the picture to Geoff. This is the reply we received:

6 The Good, the Bad & the Ugly

To Feed or not to FeedPresentation by Nigel Thomson Feeding bromeliads is a subject almost as controversial as protecting crocodiles - many people say neither is right nor necessary. Other growers say feed, feed ‘em, feed ‘em up! I believe I can have my plants survive without feeding, or I can have them bigger and better by feeding - then why wouldn’t I feed them?

Types of Fertilizers Natural - Blood & Bone; Organic Plus; Fish & SeaweedChemical - Osmocote; Peters Professional; Thrive; Wolfgang’s FertilizerTwo Methods of feeding plantsBottom Feed - Giving fertilizer around the base of the plant to feed via the roots, using Osmocote, Organic Plus, Blood & Bone. Foliar Feed - Mixing fertilizer in water and applying as a spray or in your watering system, using Natrakelp, Seasol, Charlie Carp, Power Feed, Peter’s Professional, Thrive,Wolfgang’s Fertilizer.*Seasol contains potassium and trace elements but no nitrogen and therefore it is a tonic and not a growth fertilizer. It builds up cell structure and makes plants more resistant to extreme heat and cold.* Foliar feeding needs regularity - every week, every two weeks or even once a month. Foliar feeding once in a while does no good and is better left undone. Remember the old saying - “weekly, weakly” - feed regularly but at 1/4 to 1/2 the recommended dose. Personally I find bottom feeding with slow release is easiest. Some growers tell us that a bromeliad will not take up nutrients once it has passed the seedling stage but I have cut off all the roots of a mature plant, repotted it with bottom fertilizer, and in a very short time new roots have formed and taken up the available food. Bromeliads are opportunists, they will take up any form of nutrient offered to them - just like crows, that even eat dead cane toads off the road!* Fertilizing rules you need to follow to have good results: Billbergias and Neoregelias should be treated differently to maintain good shape and colour, however offsets must be fed to give them a good start. If foliar feeding use low or no nitrogen (N) together with high potassium (K) to prevent them becoming lanky and green. If bottom feeding use low N and high K but for a short release period, like 5-6 months and you will get good shape and colour. What is very important in feeding billbergias and neoregelias is to combine good light with the feeding. I have found that certain neoregelias can be fed quite

Page 7: Bromelcairns · 2012-12-12 · Bromelcairns Bimonthly Newsletter of Cairns Bromeliad Socie!Inc. "2012 # 1 "" P.O. Box 28 Cairns Queensland 4870 Aus#alia Honorary Life Member - Grace

Good bad & ugly continued ...heavily while they grow in 50% shade - this enables them to grow much larger while keeping good shape and colour. Feeding very heavily when flowering results in many offsets but feed the offsets sparingly with short time release fertilizer to keep good colour and shape. All other genera, alcantarea, aechmea, cryptanthus, guzmania, portea, vriesea, nidularium and even tillandsia can be fed with any fertilizer containing high nitrogen and high potassium. I use both slow release and foliar fertilizer - this gives me bigger, healthier plants that are more resistant to cold and heat and better flowering. When a plant is in flower, fertilize heavily and it will have more offsets that are more vigorous. This is pure logic as so much energy is taken up by flowering and if the food is not replaced, the plant cannot produce as many, or as strong offsets. If the flower spike is cut off it will encourage better offsets. You can have good shape and colour if you do not feed your plants, but they will not be as big and will have fewer offsets. You can feed and have larger, stronger better flowering and better offset production if you combine feeding with good light.//

Not fed & heavily fed comparisons, all grown under 50% shade

Right handtwelve months growth difference. plant heavily fed and grown under 70% shade cloth,12 months growth. You can manipulate size, colour and shape.

An Evolving Enano? Our picture shows 5 generations of a plant imported in 1992 from a nursery in California. It was labelled Tillandsia latifolia ‘Enano,’ which is supposed to be a very small form of T. latifolia from Peru. The generation 4 plant shows an early stage of the normal process of asexual reproduction in the plant: it puts up a vertical inflorescence (you can see a tiny red flower) and an offset (generation 5) grows out of the base of the flower spike. Over time the new offset grows, and eventually wears the inflorescence stalk down until the new offset is below its mother. You can see the result in the different positionsof generation 2 below 1, 3 below 2 etc.Interestingly, as the plant has grown over the past 20 years succeeding offsets are growing larger, and the habit is changing as well.Generation 1 is 9 cm. diameterGeneration 2 is 14 cm. diameterGeneration 3 is 17 cm. diameterGeneration 4 is 21 cm. diameterThe first 3 generations had only one offset, ontheir inflorescence. Generation 4 is continuing with the practice of having one inflorescence offset (viviparous)but in addition has so far produced 3 large offsets in its leaf axils as well (basal offsets).Interesting to observe all this - if you have time!

9 I received this information and pictures in an email from Hiro Takizawa in 2007, he said I had to admit in writing that I had kept his letter and photos warm for five years, and that he is still hybridizing and ‘producing very selected, wonderful hybrids every yearʼ!

Reprinted with the kind permission of Hiroyuki Takizawa Tillandsia Lover Extraordinare & the Vascular Surgeon with Magic Hands ! ! “Did you know that I'm doing sterilized culturing of Tillandsia during the last 10 years? I love to discover new species in the wild, but not only that - I really love to create nice plants. No - only very, very, nice plants. [This was 2007, now in 2012 he says ‘very selected, wonderful hybrids every year’] I love Tillandsia dyeriana so I have made many dyeriana hybrids. My first one is Tillandsia dyeriana x Racinaea crispa. Yes a bigeneric, the very first one in history! I named it xRacindia 'La Mano Magica' in Spanish it means ‘magic hand’. I am wishing that my hands will make many miracle hybrids. It has attractive foliage and beautiful inflorescence. After doing seedling culture for more than 10 years a variegated one happened only once - I got a variegated clone of Tillandsia dyeriana x cacticola. I propagated it under sterilized conditions, so I have several nice plants [2012, ‘I am about to register it’] If you saw my laboratory, you would be surprised. There are several hundreds of sterilized culture boxes and you will see so many nice hybrids !!! [Ed. it amused me that Hiro wishes his hands would make miracle hybrids as he is a Vascular Surgeon, and he therefore would produce miracles most every day! [I must go to Japan] **********************************************************************************************************************

2012 - What a Big Year by Lynn This was a special year and most of us have very special memories to colour any quiet days. For many members there have been big changes in their lives as in becoming grandparents; moving &/or renovating home; new shade houses & gardens; holiday trips both in Oz & overseas; large & small problems to solve; new books to read and best of all, new people to meet and new plants to grow. We had two ‘Bloomin Broms’, each providing a wealth of new knowledge from interesting bromeliad growers. We saw how growers in other areas cope with different climates and how they adjust their growing conditions. At our May Bloomin Broms Harry Frakking had us laughing, Brent made us realize how easy our growing climate is, Geoff had our full attention as he related his experience in micro-propagation and everyone wanted John Arden’s amazing intergeneric hybrids. We were lucky to have Harry Luther take us on a tour of the Bay Gardens in Singapore, then thrust us into the varied world of epiphytes - to warm wet forests; in near desert conditions; on rocks; on other plants and how bromeliads provide food and shelter for many other plant and animal species. It was a shock when Harry died but we were blessed to have shared a very happy, albeit small part of his life. Since he was 12 years old, George Stamatis had corresponded with Harry, their first meeting was here in Cairns and George was speaking on the same level, he did well, I am so proud of him. Actually it was an interesting speaker trio - George had also harassed Nigel Thomson all those years in South Africa! When contacting people about Harry I realized how large the bromeliad world is and just how many persons I have met. Better still the vast majority are really good to know, only a few I can live without - mainly Cyber Trolls. Marie Giddens words “members who belong to the Cairns Brom Society ... are a great lot of ladies and gentlemen who go along to have a social day.” What else is there in this life?? Money can buy bromeliads but not good and necessary stuff like friendships. Thank you for your quiet assistance during the year - Harry Frakking did a frakking good job organizing the data equipment at Bloomin Broms; Bob packed and carried, plants, tables, chairs and cooked lunches. Brendan always sweeps up and Olive counts the money - Thank You to all the helpers. I am really sad to lose my assistant editor as Moyneen has been a real stalwart this year. Quality items just arrived by emails. Be happy in Tasmania sweet lady. Nominations are due for 2013 committee - your chance to help your society. Highlights of this year for me: * Watching the Novice members enter plants and their standard getting better and better - well done Novices. Having well grown and varied plants at meetings.* Having Harry, George & Nigel here. Feeling the caring of members after the cyber lies - it was like a lovely soft blanket. Thank you for your support and caring.!! ! Bloomin Broms June 1st. & 2nd., 2013 Guest Speakers are Andrew Flower of New Zealand & Bob Cross from Ipswich Put it in your diary now!
