Did You Know?After 20 years of exceptional service, our President, Dr. Biff Green, has announced his retirement to begin on June 30, 2011. The 13th president should be named in March 2011.

The Lady Falcons volunteered their time by giving back to the Wichita Central Branch YMCA by joining their 8th annual Frosty 5k run/walk Jan. 1. The funds go to the YMCA Strong Kids program that helps provide services and scholarships for more than 65,000 kids and adults in the Wichita community.

Kevin D. Whittaker, G’98, and Eric Olson, G’01, both passed away in May 2009. Jean Troyer, G’03, passed away in September 2010.

Let’s discuss “hot CIS topics.”According to Ask Yahoo!, an easy way to find out what languages and skills are popular now is by scoping job descriptions as they will list requirements. Another source recommends looking at websites for new or upcoming releases from programming text book publishers like O’Reilly or the Pragmatic Programmers. Also, Computer World is forecasting that individuals must be adaptable to keep their job and that IT departments will be populated with “versatilists” or individuals who possess a techie background combined with knowing the business inside and

out. Project management and application development skills will also be a must in 2011. Another source indicated that multi-core programming will increase using languages like Erlang, and developing software for mobile platforms like Google’s Android project will grow.

Trivia Question Winners In my last newsletter, I asked, “What does Laus Deo on top of the George Washington Monument mean?” The answer is “Praise Be to God.” According to Wikipedia’s interpretation of the religion, mortality and education section of Washington’s first inaugural address, “religious principles promote the protection of property, reputation, and life that are the foundations of justice. Washington goes so far as to say that the nation’s morality cannot be maintained without religion and, since morality is necessary in popularly elected governments, religion is vital in maintaining the popularly elected government of the United States.” Our thanks to Tracey McNeely, G’99, and to Cindi Kerr, G’05, who both e-mailed me with correct answers.

Search Underway for 13th University President

Friends University Offers Hometown Advantage Grant

As you may have heard, Dr. Biff Green, president of Friends University, will be retiring June 30, 2011.The Board of Trustees has launched a national search for the 13th president of Friends

University which is expected to conclude by March 1, 2011. To find out more about the presidential search, please visit www.friends.edu/presidential-search.

Do you know a high-school senior from Sedgwick County, Andover, Augusta or Rose Hill who is exploring college options? Friends University is offering students from these areas a $5,000 grant toward tuition at Friends University starting in fall 2011.

The $5,000 grant is renewable, is available in addition to other scholarships and does not need to be paid back. It is designed to make it more affordable for new students who demonstrate financial need to get an independent college education.

You may recall that the Alumni Office has been working with the State of Kansas to create a Friends University license plate. On Jan. 4, 2011, the director of vehicles informed us that while they have all the necessary documents to move forward, they would need additional monies from the state budget to produce the plates.

At the time of the printing of this newsletter, the director of vehicles stated that they would be meeting with the secretary of revenue in mid-January to work on adding our plate costs to their agency budget.

The Alumni Office anticipates re-grouping with the director of vehicles in mid-February to determine where funding is with our plate request. More information will be posted online at www. friends.edu/kansas-license-plates.

December Seniors Honored at Special LuncheonWith the help of the Wichita Alumni Advisory Board, the Friends University Alumni Association honored those traditional-undergraduate seniors who graduated in December with a special luncheon Dec. 8.

Members of the Wichita Alumni Advisory Board, University President Dr. Biff Green and his wife, Binnie, and Board of Trustees Chairman Rodney Pitts, G’82, served a tasty Mexican buffet of steak and chicken fajitas, Spanish rice, refried beans, cinnamon chips and all the fixins!

Students received words of encouragement from Dr. Green, Mr. Pitts and Wichita Alumni Advisory Board members Marvin Connet, G’82/’84, and Lisa Kraemer, G’10. As they prepared to enter the world as representatives of Friends University, the seniors were urged to remember the time they spent with their classmates and friends.

Congratulations once again to this group of graduating seniors!
