The roles and responsibilities of the executive director and the board can become complicated – so complicated that resolving territorial rights can consume all of an agency’s energy. This course helps sort out the roles, responsibilities, and potential strengths of this unique, yet vital partnership.

Bio: Don Wells is a nonprofit journeyman. He is a former director of the Duke University Nonprofit Management Program and the Duke Institute in Nonprofit Leadership. Don is the lead consultant of Don Wells Consulting, Inc.

Improve your accounting practices! Track income and expenses to specific programs in order to fulfill expectations of funders, donors and the IRS for financial management. Participants will learn to utilize cost centered accounting via a straightforward Excel-based system. This interactive class will use sample worksheets and small group work, and will include methods for reporting the cost centered results via financial statements and the year-end auditor. Participants are encouraged to bring their nonprofit’s chart of accounts and/or budget, which will be used as a starting point of the presentation.

Bio: Melissa Le Roy teaches non-profit management classes in North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia for Duke University. She is a board member of the North Carolina Center for Non Profits, and is designated a non-profit mentor for the western region of the state. She contributes a regular Non-Profit Leadership column for the Tryon Daily Bulletin, and offers her services as a consultant through her firm, On Fire Non-Profit Consulting. Before joining the non-profit sector, Melissa worked for over twelve years in corporate America.

Bio: Ruth Peebles, MPA, President and Founder of the INS Group, offers more than 20 years of hands on experience in nonprofit management, fundraising, organizational development and project management.

Volunteer Management: Turning People into Volunteers & Volunteers into SupportersJeanne Allen, [email protected]

Discuss building a vibrant volunteer culture of engagement and sustainability with high potential outcomes. Learn tips that will multiply your success in engaging the volunteers your nonprofit seeks, best practices on how volunteers build and feed organizational capacity, proven strategies to become a volunteer magnet, and common mistakes to avoid in developing your volunteer philosophy.

Maintaining the public’s trust is crucial to a nonprofit’s continued work and yet, the misdeeds of a few make it hard for the rest of us. How does your agency identify and resolve ethical dilemmas! We will look at ethical dilemmas in several areas of nonprofit management: finances, board governance, fundraising, and human resources.

Bio: Hudson Fuller, JD, MPH, is a licensed attorney who has served on several nonprofit boards and as the executive director of a nonprofit. She received her Certificate in Nonprofit Management from the Duke Nonprofit Management Program. She currently serves as the Executive Director of the Family Violence Prevention Center of Orange County.
