ner pantry in the kitchen, for example.Another theme was distributed storageand convenience. A custom spice cabi-net, two beverage fridges one by theliving room and one in Danas office and his-and-hers ovens of different

heights and sizes make a world of differ-ence to the family. But perhaps the mostenviable manifestation of this goal is theWaldmans answer to the traditionaljunk drawer.

Its always a challenge to have thatarea turn out nice and tidy, Dana says. But the family has accomplished justthat, with a comprehensive messagecenter space. What looks like an ordi-nary cabinet unfolds to reveal magneticwhite boards and a bulletin board open when the family is relaxing athome, but hidden away when theyreentertaining formally. Below are severalneatly organized drawers containing

laundry room and Danas officeface a guest bathroom the hotelbathroom, as the family refers to

    it.Dana calls his 13-year-old daugh-

ter Rachels bedroom and bath-room the best in the house, whereHollywood glam meets tropical.Complete with vanity, hatbox toiletand waterfall faucet but also adream catcher and a model of thesolar system the room is oneteenage girls version of paradise.

Teri has her space, I have my

space, Rachel has her space, Danasays. The dog has space everywhere,

Rachel adds.At the end of the hallway is the

newly added master suite. Thecouple wanted a serene, spa-likefeel, Teri says. The bedroom andtwo walk-in closets feel rustic andcabin-y, but the bathroom, withJacuzzi, double shower and facing

vanities, is nothing if not Zen.As always, every detail was

planned out. Teri hates standing onthe drain when she showers, so thefloor of the shower tilts slightly toaccommodate a trough drain.

Theres little tricks you can do tomake it high-end, Dana says. Heindicated extra finishes and smalltouches throughout the house suchas the leathered granite counters,Carrera marble and Brazilian cher-ry hardwood floors.

The family recommends hold-ing an open house two weeksafter moving back in. Not onlydid it force them to unpack, it also

afforded their contractors a chanceto show off their work.It never occurred to us how

much they would appreciate it,Teri says. It was very touching.

The Waldmans have no plans tosell the house.

Im still so excited about thehouse and weve lived here almosttwo years, Teri says.

Rachel doesnt ever plan to leave

she wants the house in herinheritance, she says.

Would you move to the masterbedroom? asks Teri.

    No, Id stay in mine!

When the Langs found their homein Los Altos Hills in 2005, theyknew the massive basement would

provide a nice muffled space for theirteenage drummer son. And, although thekitchen wasnt my taste, Katharine Langsays they had no intention of redoing it.

But it was a Chevrolet kitchen in aMercedes home, she says. The 10-year-oldappliances, especially the refrigerator, werestarting to fail. The ovens were so small Langhad to bend the end of her cookie sheet tosqueeze it in.

And the sink faced the wall.No walls were moved in the major recon-

struction, but the sink and stove locationswere swapped, with the sink now in a largeisland, under a skylight. That makes it easyto look out on the backyard, or chat withpeople at the slumped (molded) glass bar.

Color inspiration came from a black-granite-topped table and chairs in the eat-ing area. Cabinets are a dark walnut, withthe island, broom closet and sideboard in a

matte-black finish, contrasted withbrushed-nickel pulls. Lang found aBrazilian marble with just the rightcombination of black, cream and

caramel to tie everything together. Its so bold. Im a big fan ofAbstract Expressionism, she says, describing why she chose to runthe granite up the wall behind theDacor six-burner cooktop. Themain backsplash is limestone tile, with small square glass tiles set onthe diagonal.

Lang was very hands-on inchoosing colors, textures andstyles, given her background in art.

Ive done painting, sculpture, woodworking, she says.

She even scouted for the counterstools, which she found at GW,the upscale Goodwill second-handstore in Menlo Park. The modernPlexiglas stools came from a draft-ing firm that went out of business.I picked them up for a song, shesays.

A key advantage in a customkitchen is building things wherethe cook can reach them. At 5feet 2 inches, Lang is pleased theyinstalled the new microwave underthe countertop. I feel a lot safer, she says.

The one glitch which wasquickly fixed was that thestacked double ovens were settoo high for her. The contractormoved a storage unit from belowthe ovens to above it, keeping thewarming drawer low.

Lower cabinets are mostly self-closing drawers; even the cornercarousel quietly closes itself.

Storage highlights include pull-out pantry bins, a vertical pulloutnear the stove for oil and vinegarand a spice drawer.

If I had more room I wouldhave a huge fridge and a walk-in pantry, Lang says. Insteadshe compensated by adding tworefrigerator drawers for snacks anddrinks, in addition to a 42-inch

    KitchenAid.They kept the dumbwaiter that

helps transport heavy items fromthe garage below to the kitchen.

Since Lang isnt a fan of kitchen/family great rooms, she wantedthe archway separating the kitchenand family room filled with deco-rative bifold doors. The slumpedglass lets light through, but muf-fles sound. A second UltraGlasdoor leads from the family roomto a hallway.

We came from a modern house. Our challenge was to find a transi-tional style between contemporaryand traditional, she says, pointing

to the built-in entertainment wallin the family room. We went alittle bit Craftsman, and addedsconces, overhead track lighting,as well as subtle lighting in thecustom-made wall unit.

The original owner was veryfond of shiny brass and crystalchandeliers but Lang is quietly

t isnt easy designing and building abrand-new house adjacent to a his-torical district that doesnt leap out

and say: This just doesnt fit.But Oakland architect Cathy

Schwabe rose to the challenge, notonly adapting her design to meshwith its more traditional neighbors, but creating an energy-efficientstructure that earned more thandouble the 115 green pointsrequired.

Schwabes solution was to site thetwo-story house near Palo Altos

Professorville on a double lot, care-fully building around the matureredwoods in front, and usingunpainted wood and broad roofs.

We wanted it to be open to thesun, but make one feel like its asmaller scale, Schwabe says. It feels

like a collection of buildings. One enters through what the

architect refers to as the circula-

tion spine a roomy foyer withstairways leading down to the giantfamily room, exercise area, guestbedroom and bath, or up to sleepingquarters.

Turn left to find a study and laun-dry area, leading to the guest housein back.

Turn right to enter the great room, encompassing living room, diningroom and kitchen.

The house is built in two distinctwings, with that circulation spine inthe center. Huge windows open tofront and back, many with motor-ized roll-down shades recessed intothe framing. Some are on timersthat respond to temperature as well

as time of day.Sensitivity to the streetscape, and

specifically to the next-door neigh-bors, led to pulling the house backon the second floor on one side, so

it wouldnt hover over the smallerstructure. On the opposite side, the wall extends straight up nota problem next to the two-storyneighbor.

Enormous thought went intospecific materials that would helpexceed the California State EnergyRequirements by 41 percent: TheCity of Palo Alto requires all newresidential building to follow a

GreenPoint Rated checklist, scor-ing the construction on everythingfrom minimizing disruption ofexisting trees to using recycledmaterials for walkways and engi-neered lumber.

The master bathroom featuresa tub and shower (which convertsto a steam shower) that leads outthrough a glass door to the deckadjacent to the bedroom with anoutdoor shower and bathtub.

Basements are often dark, poten-tially damp areas. Here, the familyroom/play area opens to a largebelow-grade patio and a wall gardennext to stairs leading into the back-yard. A glass fence separates thepatio from the large lawn, suitablefor childrens play.

One of the landscape challengeswas finding plants that would

grow along the wall and belowthe stairway in the shade, accord-ing to Monty Hall, from ArterraLandscape Design. Recycled envi-ro-glass is sprinkled between thecast-concrete stepping-stones onthe patio.

The landscape designers wereinvolved early on in the designprocess, including making surewaterproofing foundation walls was

    known upfront.It was very collaborative,

notes Vera Gates, a principal withArterra. It was a really fun andexciting way to work.

The crew was very careful not todisturb the roots of the neighbor-ing Zelkova tree while digging outthe basement. Today the backyardenjoys shade from both that matureZelkova and a towering oak behind, what Gates calls borrowed land-scape.

The backyard features lawn forplaying, as well as edible, native andlow-water-use plants and permeablepaving. The front has an expanseof fescue, a grass that will grow toabout 10 inches before gracefullyflopping over, offering a meadoweffect.

The idea was to have the houseclearly of today, but also blendCraftsman and Modern. ... It fitswith the neighborhood, Schwabesays, with an eye to standing upover time.

the main floor of the house. Andneither quite understood howthe construction would be done.Ahern assured them he does this

kind of thing all the time. Hissolution was to dig from the frontdoor and under the house to exca-vate the basement.

It brought the Beasleys whatthey were looking for and more: abig boy romper-room for theirgrowing sons, as Libby says, and abackyard perfect for entertainingand playing. Even the basementhas views of the Bay.

To Ahern the solution was obvi-ous. Half the house was alreadyhanging out over the backyard. Asecond story would just make theoutdoor space even less accessible,he says. Instead, he saw a place forthe family room and guest room

the family wanted, plus a spacious, shaded and picturesque patio.

When the work started, theBeasleys werent sure how big the

addition would end up being. They kinda just kept digging,Alan says. The interior additionis almost the width of the mainfloor. The patio is shaded by thearea of the main floor that hadhung over the yard.

The bottom floor got whatamounts to a full guest suite, replete with walk-in closet, bath-room and laundry area. Next

to the family room, and with aview of the patio, is a kitchenettewith wine cellar a locking,climate-controlled room slightlybigger then a full-size fridge.

Libby, an interior designer, gotto keep the homes Spanish style,

which echoes that of her girlhoodhome in Palo Alto. The designs use ofarches and tilework help maintain theeffect.

One of the most visually appealingparts of the addition is the distressedDouglas fir beams. Because the base-ment has concrete floors and radiantheating, theres no need for ducting. And it allows the ceiling to be espe-cially high for a basement.

Alan likes the method used toachieve the distressed effect almost as

much as the beams themselves: Theybeat the wood with police batons! hesays excitedly.

The main floor, which hadnt beenchanged much since it was builtin 1961, got a makeover, too: theyexpanded one of the boys bedroomsso that theyre now about the samesize. They completely remodeled thekitchen and added a breakfast nookthat transitions nicely to the outside.

In the process of the remodel theyfound out that the roof wasnt designedto support the Spanish tiles that theprevious owners had installed and wassagging in places, especially the garage. The old wiring was also found to be

The basement addition, above left, gave the family smoother access to thebackyard. The kitchen, left, enjoyed acomplete makeover. Above, the backyardnow includes a spacious patio outside thenew basement.

    Whether large or small,

traditional or contempo-rary, residential or com-mercial, there are common factorsto evaluate great projects. Buildingcodes address life and safety. LEEDand Build it Green suggest a strat-egy for sustainability and energyefficiency. These are part of thegroundwork for great projects, buthow are they really created?

They all start with a Plan.A Plan begins with broad goals

    for your project, such as:s7EWISHTOACCOMMODATEA

    growing family.s7EWOULDLIKETOSTAYINOUR

house as long as possible (aging inplace).s/URLONGTERMGOALSAREUNCER-

tain, and we may need to move in afew years.s7EWOULDLIKETOBUILDANEW

    house for ourselves.

Each of thesegoals is helpful forcreating a Plan.

Many people arestarting to work ontheir homes again.

    Some are updatinginefficient older

homes; some may be adding a roomand others may wish to build a newhome with the efficiencies of newconstruction.

There are a variety of ways toproceed. I have surveyed and inter-viewed many builders, architectsand homeowners with this questionin mind. I have also presented pan-

els to discuss this subject over thelast few years Interior Designersand Contractors and most recently,Architects and Builders. The fol-lowing are the highlights of agree-ment about steps that help guidegreat projects.

Step 1Clients should create a list of

    goals, including their timeframe

and their budget.A reasonable timeframe is very

important. A major remodel com-pleted in the most eff icient wayrequires that your home becomesa job site. Finding short-term

housing elsewhere speeds up theconstruction process. Adding abathroom can be accomplishedwhile homeowners are still living intheir home, but many of the samesubcontractors are used as on largerprojects. Framers, drywall, electri-cians, plumbers, tile layers andpainters are good examples. Thesequence of these different trades isimportant.

An open discussion about anappropriate budget is vital. Thisallows the team to design your proj-ect in the most cost-effective way tomaximize your budget. It is moreefficient than having to redesignlater. Creating a portfolio of ideasand a list of priorities can assist theteam to help evaluate the budget. Asking a builder to bid on a project without identify-

ing at least most of the elements is unrealistic. For clients with short-term plans we develop a punchlist of priorities and assessment of each, based on timeto complete and cost. Obviously, items that are brokenor needing repair are first on the list. Fresh coats ofpaint, upgrading lighting and hardware might be allthat is needed.

Step 2Create a Plan and select a team.

The team should include an architect, interior design-er and an experienced contractor. If desired, includea specialist in home audio/video integration and alandscape architect. The benefit of identifying each ofthese professionals at the beginning is to create a well-

thought-out Plan, one that will allow the job to be welldefined and efficiently constructed. Pre-planning is thekey to accurate bidding and satisfying goals.

Architects are highly trained, creative people whovisualize structural spaces and who enable a project tomeet the planning, zoning and building codes appli-cable to the project. Interior designers concentrateon functional space planning and interior styles anddetails. This may include cabinetry, lighting, flooring, wall treatments and colors, window coverings, detailsof stairs, moldings and doors. Interior designers per-

sonalize living and working spaces, and keep details ontrack by prioritizing interior choices, and providing thecontractor with timely client decisions. Home entertain-ment and energy efficiency can be designed and coordi-nated with audio/video specialists.
