DECATUR - Although the State ofIllinois dictates that all drivers musthave auto insurance, theirrecommended minimum coveragejust isn’t enough, says Don Whitacreof Whitacre-McNamara Insurance inDecatur.

“Unfortunately, those limits are solow that given even a routineaccident, the car owner could paywith money out of their own pocketfor injuries or damages that theycaused to other people or othervehicles,” he said.

Whitacre recommends that peoplepurchase at least $250,000 of bodilyinjury liability and $100,000 ofproperty damages. While that maysound like a lot of coverage, saysWhitacre, imagine yourself on a rainyday plowing into a line of cars at astop light, and you’ll see why youneed it.

Amanda Giles, an agent withCountry Financial in Forsyth, saysthat drivers also need to considertheir net worth when purchasing carinsurance.

“When people are choosing theirliability limits, what they don’trealize is that they are protectingthemselves,” said Giles. “They needto take a look at their networth….because if they hurt or killsomeone in an accident, they want tohave enough to protect the assets

they have worked so hard for. It’s awhole lot easier to pay the fifty dollarmonthly premium now than to havetheir wages garnished for the rest oftheir lives.”

Drivers may also want to consideran umbrella policy, a minimum of anadditional million dollars of coveragedesigned to fill in the gaps in othertraditional policies, such as auto andhomeowners insurance, includingcoverage of ATV’s, boats and more.

“It’s only about $150 per year, andit covers injuries that you mightcause to other people…where youare minding your own business,” saidWhitacre. “For instance, if you make

a mistake and cause minor injuriesto someone else or a number of otherpeople—for example, if youaccidentally make a left turn in frontof a motorcycle.”

It’s just good common sense tohave the appropriate amount of autoinsurance, agree Whitacre and Giles. It’s about taking preventativemeasures to protect yourself, yourfamily and your assets, should theworst ever [email protected]

2011 Jeep Grand CherokeeFor 2011, the Jeep Grand

Cherokee has been stretched out, thereby offering more passengerroom. While the number of seatsremains at five, passengers areafforded more space and comfort.Interior changes also make theradio and climate controls easier tosee and operate. When it comes toperformance, the 2011 GrandCherokee is equipped with anall-new 3.6-liter V6 powerplantwhich churns out 290-horsepower and is morepowerful and fuel-efficient than itspredecessor.A 360-horsepower V8 is also anoption.

2011 Honda OdysseyThe 2011 edition of the Honda Odyssey received a complete makeover, with sleeker styling, a more spacious interior, better gas mileage and

surround-sound audio and high-definition display for rear-seat passengers.Even with the refinements, this minivan is about practicality, with room for eight passengers – including more space, thanks to an added

inch in length and two inches in width – sliding rear doors and a powerful 3.5-liter V6 motor. Also new for 2011 is a six-speed automatictransmission on the top-of-the-line models that, when paired with the V6, provides better acceleration and improved fuel economy.

2011 Hyundai ElantraFor 2011, the Hyundai Elantra has been redesigned cosmetically, along with new features, including a 1.8-liter engine and all-new six-speed

transmissions. The motor is rated at 148 horsepower, with 131 pound-feet of torque. In GLS trim, the Elantra comes with a standard six-speed manual

transmission with an option for a six-speed automatic. The Limited has the automatic as standard equipment. With either combination, EPAestimates are 29 mpg city/40 mpg highway and 33 mpg combined. “All these products can be found under one roof,” said Steve Gensler Jr.,general manager for Bob Brady.

FORSYTH - Accessorizing yourvehicle means a lot more thesedays than adding fuzzy dice. Fromthe practical to the pretty, accessories can include items thatwill make your vehicle safer, sleeker and more useful.

For 25 years, Garry Brown ofBrown’s Truck Accessories inForsyth has specialized in trickingout trucks of all sizes. One of hisbest sellers is a cap (called a topperin the past), which covers thetruck bed.

“These make the truck bedmore secure and improve gasmileage around 10 percent, because of the increasedaerodynamics,” said Brown.

Brown also sells a lot of steps tohelp access the cabs of SUV’s andcrossover vehicles; truck bedprotection in the form of liners, rugs, and sprayed-on coatings;towing accessories; hood shields, chrome trim, emergency lighting

for emergency and constructionvehicles and more. All installationis done on site.

“Central Illinois is a truck area, and we enjoy outfitting them forpeople,” said Brown.

Audio Express in Decatur notonly enhances vehicles’ audiosystems, but also adds just aboutanything you can imagine to makeyour factory car more fabulous. The list includes remote starts, keyless entries, alarms, powerwindows and locks, cruisecontrols, satellite radios, backupsensors, heated seats, sunroofs, video systems and evenbreathalyzer machines.

“We do a lot of different thingsand go with the flow of themarket,” said manager BobStewart, who has worked at thestore for 35 years.

Most popular right now is glasstinting, says Stewart.

“It used to be that you could nottint your front driver or passengerwindows, but now you can,” he

said. “Besides the aesthetic valueand keeping out heat, there’s asafety factor. It helps hold the glasstogether and prevent injuriescaused by flying glass in accidents. It also cuts out about 99 percent ofUV radiation and cuts down glare.”

The Audio Express staff talkswith each customer about hisvehicle to confirm exactly what thecustomer needs done.

“We strive to ask our customersa lot of specific questions,” saidStewart. “For instance, we oftensee elderly customers that maythink something is wrong withtheir speakers, and it turns outthat the balance is not adjustedcorrectly. We like to be honestabout those things.”[email protected]

2011 Chevrolet ImpalaBorn in the late 1950s, the Impala nameplate carries on a fine

tradition in the Chevrolet sedan lineup. Much of its appeal has to dowith its practicality: Smooth ride, quiet interior, enough room for upto six passengers, a large trunk and a great safety track record.

For 2011, the Impala offers three packages: LS (base), LT(midrange) and LTZ (top-of-the-line). The base LS is chalk-full ofstandard features, including automatic headlights, cruise control, keyless entry, air-conditioning, six-way power driver seat, tilt-onlysteering wheel, OnStar and a six-speaker CD audio with satelliteradio. Power is supplied with a 3.5-liter V6 which puts out 211horsepower and 216 pound-feet of torque. Move up to the LT andLTZ and your options multiply.

2011 Chrysler Town & CountryFor 2011, the Chrysler Town & Country gets major updates inside

and out. Visually, it’s easy to notice the style changes to the exteriorand passenger area. And while you’ll feel as though you’re in a luxuryvehicle, the functionality of the Chrysler minivan remains. The Stow-n-Go seating, while still practical, now provides greater comfort aswell.

Once you’re in motion, you’ll notice the all-new 3.6-liter V6 whichpumps out 283-horsepower. Combined with a retuned suspension, the

ride is noticeably better too. With all of its improvements andamenities, the 2011 Chrysler Town & Country has every right to layclaim to being a member of the luxury minivan market.

2011 GMC TerrainThe GMC Terrain sits in a unique area: It’s somewhere in the

middle of a compact and midsize crossover SUV. While it’s more asmall crossover, its amenities – and there are many – make it feelbigger. The Terrain has the interior space found on many midsizeSUV, but yet, carries a light weight that make a four-cylinder motormore than adequate. There is, of course, a V6 upgrade available.

GMC engineers pulled out all the stops when planning theinterior. Plenty of acoustic insulation and a noise-canceling system(think upscale headphones) make the interior much quieter thanother vehicles in its category. Add to that, spacious seating and asmooth ride, and you’ll be thinking you’re in a much bigger SUV.

2011 Chevrolet MalibuThe Chevrolet Malibu, winner of the 2009 North American Car of

the Year award, remains a popular car with the buying public, and forgood reason. Its looks – stylish and upscale – alone make its ownersfeel as though they’re driving a luxury car. The Malibu’s interiorfeatures well-placed controls, along with a great ride and handling.

Available powerplants are a fuel-efficient four cylinder or a punchyV6. The 2.4-liter four-cylinder pumps out a respectable 169horsepower and 160 pound-feet of torque, while the 3.6-liter V6 is at252-horsepower and 251 pound-feet of torque. Both engines comewith a standard six-speed automatic transmission. The Malibu is available in four packages: LS, 1LT, 2LT and LTZ.

2011 Cadillac SRXAfter last year’s redesign, the Cadillac SRX was a huge success in

the compact luxury crossover market. Six trim packages give youplenty of options to create a car that’s all you: Base, Luxury,Performance, Premium, Turbo Performance and Turbo Premium. Thebase model includes 18-inch wheels, roof rails, automatic headlights,an eight-way power driver seat, tilt-and-telescoping steeringwheel, dual-zone automatic climate control, OnStarand an eight speaker Bose stereo with CD playerand satellite radio.

2011 Buick RegalAfter a six-year sabbatical, the Buick Regal returns as what can best

be described as a Euro sport sedan. This is most definitely not yourfather’s Regal. The new European-influenced Regal is not by accident– it’s based on the Opel (a General Motors division) Insignia, andshares many of its handling and ride characteristics. Power comes via a 2.4-liter four-cylinder that puts out 182horsepower or a 2.0-liter turbo-charged motor with 220-horsepower.

The new Regal is available in two packages: CXL and CXL Turbo.Standard features are many, and include 18-inch wheels, heatedsideview mirrors, dual-zone automatic climate control, full poweraccessories, On Star, leather seats, power driver seat, auto-dimmingrearview mirror, trip computer, seven speaker stereo with CD/MP3,satellite radio, iPod jacks and Bluetooth connectivity.

2011 Chevrolet EquinoxThe 2011 Chevrolet

Equinox ranks No. 1 out of23 affordable compact SUVs,based on 23 published reviewsand test drives. “The Chevrolet Equinox is acompetent crossover that manages to offerfuel economy that rivals many mid-sizesedans,” said Rob Evans, Chevrolet salesmanager for Miles. While the Equinox is closeto being a midsize, when it comes to priceand fuel economy, the Equinox is about ascompact as they come.

The Equinox is available in severalpackages: LS, 1LT, 2LT and the near luxuryLTZ. All-wheel-drive is optional, as is a V6engine. Of note, opting for the all-wheel-driveand/or the V6 engine decreases the Equinox’sfuel economy rating. For 2011, the Equinoxcomes equipped with an optional V6 able torun E-85 blended fuel. MRSP: $22,745 to$30,070. MPG: 22 city/32 highway.

2011 Nissan JukeIf you’ve seen a Nissan Juke and wondered

what it is, don’t feel alone. Its part car; partSUV; all crossover. “When you compare theJuke to other cars on the market, it doesn’tlook like anything you’ve seen before,” saidMaurice Brown, Nissan sales manager for

Miles. Nissan engineers wanted to create avehicle for young professionals that would stop traffic, have good performance and decent fuel economy. They definitely hit themark.

The Juke comes in three packages: S, SVand SL. All models have the option of all-wheel drive (which requires the ContinuouslyVariable Transmission). A variety of technicalfeatures are available, and include anavigation system, a RearView monitor andiPod integration. MSRP: $18,980 to $24,570.MPG: 27 city/32 highway.

DECATUR - For 30 years, DanBenson of Rainbow Automotivein Decatur has been encouragingdrivers to change their oil asrecommended by their car’smanufacturer—and equallyimportant, to use the right kindof oil.

“The main thing is to followthe guidelines in the owner’smanual,” said Benson. “Eachvehicle will be different. But oneof the major problems I see isthat people are not changingtheir oil often enough and usingthe wrong kind of oil when theydo, and that will lead to repairs.”

Neglecting to change the oilor using the wrong kind will leadto engine coking, a coating ofsludge that can lead to problemswith acceleration, idling, enginepower and more.

Jason Fisher of Fisher’s AutoRepair in Decatur sees not onlyneglected oil changes but neglectof preventative maintenance ingeneral.

“People will buy cars and runthem until they drop,” he said.“Only six to seven percent ofpeople read their owner’s manual, and that’s not good.”

Fisher often sees tires that areworn too thin to be driven uponsafely.

“When people notice a lowtire, it’s far too late, because theyare looking at a possibleblowout,” he said. “It’s importantto have tread depth measuredbecause there is supposed to be acertain amount of tread left. When the tire is flat, it’s too late.”

Fisher understands that

finances are an issue for mostpeople, who feel that they can’tafford regular vehiclemaintenance. But he says thatpeople should find room for it intheir budget, or they’ll regret notdoing so in the long run.

“What people need to realize is

that a small amount of moneyspent on maintenance today cansave them a whole lot tomorrow,”said Fisher.

Love It or Lease ItBenefits of Buying and Leasing Vehicles

Shopping for a new vehiclecan be as agonizing as it isexciting. Though it can be fun tofind and drive a new vehicle, itcan also be nerve-wracking,particularly if the vehicle has ahigh price tag.

As any buyer knows, there arealways options when it comes tofinding a new car. Those optionsare buying and leasing. Each hasits distinct advantages anddisadvantages, and buyers shouldconsider the pros and cons of eachbefore making a commitment.

Benefits of BuyingBuying a vehicle, even in the

current economic climate, stillhas many advantages.

• Ownership. Ownership is oftenthe most discussed benefit whendeciding to buy or lease a vehicle. For those who will finance thecar, once the terms of thatagreement have been met, the caris now an owned asset. The samething goes for anyone buying apre-owned vehicle and paying forit upfront. The fact that thevehicle is an asset is a securityblanket. In the case of unexpectedfinancial hardship, for instance, the vehicle can be sold, whereas avehicle on lease cannot.

• Depreciation. While it's true acar depreciates tremendously invalue the moment it's taken offthe lot, that's only half the story.Much of a vehicle's valuedepreciation is in its early life. That depreciation slows as the carages, especially if the car is welltaken care of. The longer a driver

owns the car, the lower thedepreciation expense will be. Onthe contrary, when leasing avehicle, the individual is oftenpaying the most for the high rateof early-life depreciation, anexpense the dealer accounts forwhen determining the monthlylease expense or down payment ifthere is one.

• Insurance. Lease terms oftenmandate extensive insurancecoverage, or what's commonlyreferred to as "full coverage." Thiscan prove costly. However, driverswho own their vehicles (financingoften requires extensive coverageas well) outright have morefreedom to pick and choose theircoverage, which can greatlyreduce their annual insurancebill.

Benefits of LeasingAs beneficial as buying can be,

that's not to say leasing doesn'talso have its advantages.

• Commitment factor. Whenleasing a vehicle, the financialcommitment is not as big as it iswhen buying. Many leaseagreements have somethingsimilar to down payments knownas capital cost reductionpayments. These are often smalland don't affect the monthly leasepayment, whereas a small downpayment when buying couldgreatly affect the monthlypayment, resulting in a higherinterest rate and higher monthlycommitment.

The commitment factor alsoextends to how well a driver likes

a particular vehicle. Lease termscan be as short as 12 months, allowing for drivers to change carsafter just a year should theydiscover they don't like the car. When financing or buyingoutright, opting out is substantiallymore difficult, forcing owners toeither sell the car or attempt towork out a deal with the institutionthat made the loan.

• Monthly cost. When leasing avehicle, a buyer's monthlypayment will be lower, and inmany cases substantially so, thanif that buyer were to finance. Thisallows for more financial freedom.

• Reliability. There is typicallyvery little risk when leasing avehicle as to that vehicle'sreliability. The manufacturer'swarranty might not have expiredyet and because of mileagerestrictions common to mostleasing agreements, the vehiclelikely has not experienced anysignificant wear and tear. Whenbuying a car, particularly a usedcar from a private citizen, thewarranty is typically expired andthere's no telling how much wearand tear the vehicle has gonethrough.

2011 Ford Fusion HybridTerrific acceleration and handling make the Ford Fusion

Hybrid popular with drivers who want performance, yet go greenwhen driving. A 2.5-liter four-cylinder gasoline engine, pairedwith an electric motor gives the Fusion Hybrid 191 horsepowerand 166 pound-feet torque. EPA estimates has it at 41 mpgcity/36 mpg highway.

The Fusion Hybrid offers more than just environmentally safeperformance. Interior amenities include dual-zone automaticclimate control, rear park assist and a Sync voice control system.Even with the battery pack, the trunk offers plenty of room forluggage.

2012 (All-New) Ford Focus(2012 Premiere night: Thursday, May 12, 5 to 9 p.m.)

With the introduction of the 2012 Focus, Ford is right inthe thick of manufacturers with very good small cars. Andbeing billed as all-new is more than a marketing ploy.Available as a four-door sedan and a hatchback, the new Focusis eye candy, inside and out. It also boasts a new four-cylindermotor that’s more fuel efficient, along with a much improvedsuspension.

Helping with the buzz surrounding the 2012 Focus, is allthe new technology offered: A rearview camera; Ford’sAutomated Parking Assist; a hands-free Sync system; and theMyFord Touch system, which utilizes a large center touchscreen and voice commands, as opposed to buttons and knobs.

2011 Ford F150The most exciting news for the 2011 Ford F150 is that it is

available with four new power trains: the base V6; a pair of newly-developed V8 engines; and the highly sought after 3.5-liter, twin-turbo, EcoBoost V6, an unlikely, but completely common-sensealternative to a less fuel efficient V8.

The new EcoBoost engine breathes out 365 horsepower and420 pound-feet of torque. That’s much stronger than 2010’s top

engine, a 5.4-liter V8 with only 310 horsepower. Paired with thenew standard six-speed automatic, the EcoBoost’s power isessentially like a V8 down low, where it counts.

“We are the number one Ford F150 dealer in Macon County,”said Gary Price, general sales manager. “We pledge not to be beaton price by any other Ford dealer.”
