Front cover
All British Day has once again been and gone but it left a big impression on Adelaide. Over 100 cats
graced the main oval at Uraidla basking in a typically beautiful Adelaide day. This year the
centerpiece for the day was Jaguar but the oval was literally Covered In Cats. Thanks to all those
who helped out too.

PRESIDENTS REPORT
March 2011
If you include the sensational XJ-13, 100
Jaguars represented the JDCSA and JCCC at
All British Day; so many that they had to be
parked around the outside of the oval rather
than the inside as planned. And the highlight
from my point of view was the Jaguar timeline
on centre stage.
It‟s always difficult choosing cars to represent
the Jaguar marque when space is limited.
Below is the list of the 25 cars finally chosen by
me and Malcolm Adamson.
In no particular order:
SS1, SS100, Mk IV, Mk V, XK 120, XK 150, Mk IX, E-Type (5), S Type
Mk II, 420G, XJC, XJS, XJ12, XK8, X308, S Type (new), XF, XJ, XKR
& XJ-13
Thank you to those who provided the above cars, our general members with
their shining examples and of course those who helped out as marshals.
Congratulations go to Ross Rasmus for winning the Shannon‟s Choice Award
for his 1934 SS1. Colin Sutton also pulled off a gong with a special award for
his XJ-13.
Solitaire kindly provided a new V8 XJ and a twin turbo Diesel XF.
Unfortunately they only had one driver to deliver them and asked if I could
bring the XF for them. Always happy to oblige, I was able to help. I‟m that kind
of guy. Look out for my report on the experience.
While the trip to Noel and Ali Roscrow‟s home on Hindmarsh Island will have
happened by the time you read this, the E Type 50th Anniversary will be
merely a few weeks away. Neither event should be missed.
Lastly, for those that remember my black and blue race car, it‟s now green and
white and ready for reassembly. I know I put all the bits in a safe pace, if only I
knew where.

The all Historic Speed Week is on again “This Easter”
On Saturday the 23rd April we are inviting all clubs and individuals to come out to Mallala to see the racing and display your cars. This year it’s a bit special because it’s the 30th one. We are reliving the spirit of the first events in the early eighties. We would like to make this one a bit special and need your help to make that happen. Here are some of the reasons why you can’t afford not to come.
The 30th celebrations on and off the track. If you have a significant car or if you are a former competitor then we want to see you here.
The usual relaxed atmosphere of our event with the return this year of the Dinner, Tour, Hill Climb and 400m sprint.
As usual the large amount of track time for the entry fee that we can offer.
For regularity entrants we have halved the entry fee to bring fees into line with other events. If your log book or racing licence isn’t up to date, then consider the hill climb, regularity and sprint
This year is an extra long weekend with ANZAC Day on the Monday.
We’ve got a Month between Phillip Island, Easter and Winton this year so there is plenty of time to fix your car.
Interstate entrants get a huge discount on their garages (if you’re quick) and you can even camp in it!
We will be giving prizes for the best club display and other informal categories
We've reduced the price of the modern regularity event too so you can enter the main event in your road car if you like
And too important for a dot point: On the Sunday, we will be laying a plaque to commemorate the life and efforts of the great Kevin Shearer. I was 11 years old when he started organising this event so I rely on his reputation to appreciate all he has done for our sport. For all that knew him, I urge you to join his family and friends for this significant occasion. Finally if there is anything else you need to know, you can contact me or Abbie at the events office. I will have some information on accommodation options and am happy to do what I can with anything else. You also have the Liaison contacts in the Sup Regs for your class.
Entry is $15 per car or $20 with the track run
I hope to see you there. I’ll be in the pits with my legs sticking out from under a Sprite next to an ice-cream truck. Hard to miss, so come over. Of Course I’d Be Happy to Help Out!!! While finalising details of the All British Day Timeline at Solitaire Motors, Nigel van Sanden mentioned
that that he was unable to bring one of the cars up to Uraidla and would I like to take the twin turbo
diesel XF up there-and have it for the weekend. Naturally wanting to maintain the excellent
relationship that we have with our major sponsor, of course I was happy to help out.
When I first saw pictures of the C-XF concept car my knees went weak and I suffered heart
palpitations. The car looked like it was baring its fangs and getting ready to spring at me and rip my
throat out. When I saw the production model I was underwhelmed to be honest. To me it looked like
nicer version of a Mazda 6. I know a concept vehicle is just that and has to be tamed down for mass
production but that‟s how I felt at the time.
Never having driven one I had nothing more to base my view on than seeing one in the showroom.
That was about to change.
After picking up the car I was completely comfortable being responsible for a machine belonging to
someone else worth the high side of a
hundred grand (actually that‟s a fib), and
once I became accustomed to where the
various knobs and switches were I felt
quite at home.
Starting the car is a cross between Dr No
and Star Wars. There are no key holes in
the doors or inside the car. The “key” is
simply a rectangular piece of plastic
wizardry that just has to be somewhere in
the car- the ash tray or your pocket, it
makes no difference. Foot on the brake
and press the Start/Stop button (I think
Jaguar has done this bit before). Not
surprisingly, the start button starts the engine. What is surprising is what happens next. From the
centre console a metallic cylinder rises up like something from a James Bond film. This is the gear
selector, so rather than a lever that you move forward and back, you have a cylinder that you simply
rotate. While this is happening the aircon
vents, previously disguised as part of the
dashboard, rotate through 90 degrees and
commence wafting air in your general
direction. The missiles pods pop out of the
edges of the bonnet and the radar dish flips
out of the ash tray. Actually the last bit is not
true. There is no ash tray.
While we are still on the interior, I think
Jaguar has pulled off a coup here. The dash
is a successful marrying of leather, burl
walnut and dimpled brushed aluminium. As
Michelangelo said to the Pope: “It works
mate”. The dash instruments look like
expensive Swiss time pieces yet don‟t look out of place beside the high tech centre touch screen
panel that controls sat nav, radio and so on.
Naturally you are cosseted in fine leather. The seats are firm and comfortable in both the front and the
back and the air con is as good as my 80 Series Landcruiser, which is high praise.
7
The boot is huge. My neighbour
reckons that you could fit two dead
bodies in it, no problem.
Looks are a matter of personal taste.
For me the car isn‟t a head turner
like the XK. But perhaps that‟s the
whole idea. The styling is growing on
me and I‟ve come to appreciate it
more having lived with it for two
days. There are however a myriad of
accessories available to dress it up
to make it more C-XF-like.
At ABD it attracted a gaggle of
admirers, more so than the new XJ
and XKR parked next to it. It seems
to be more of a car for the masses, albeit well to do ones. I heard comments like “Wow” more than
once. People were in awe of it. One lady who sat in it thanked me as if I‟d given her next week‟s
winning lottery numbers.
Enough of how it looks, how does it perform? It‟s hard to put into words. The power is more than
ample. Flappy paddle gear changing is more than a gimmick here and a real joy to use. When
manually changing gears from stationary, 0 – 60 kph is reached in the time it has taken you to read
this sentence: that is up to the word “stationary”. (Read it again) All this with a minimum of fuss,
though it‟s easy to chirp the rear wheels if you use too much right boot.
The diesel engine can be only heard if you stop the car in the middle of a desert at midnight and open
the door, so long as there are no ants walking by at the time. When leisurely driving the loudest noise
inside the cabin is, well nothing really. Anyway, back to actually driving it.
The engine is smooth and silky although there is a minor transmission hesitation between 1st and 2nd
as you take off with moderate acceleration. This is not noticeable with gentle take offs or using manual
mode. I found that when driving in the hills the transmission wanted to stay in a taller gear than I would
have preferred. Having said that, with 500Nm of torque it could probably hold that gear up the Hilary
Step on Everest. The solution for me was to shift into Sport Mode which simply alters the gear change
points.
The car handles superbly, especially for its size. This was brought home to me when driving around a
tight hairpin on the back road to Clarendon where the driver of an oncoming car decided that his side
of the road was not sufficient for him and wanted to use a bit of mine. I just pointed the car where I
wanted it to go and it did it. No sliding of the rear wheels, no squealing of tyres. No fuss. The XF
makes you feel like you are a better driver than you probably are.
Driving it to work you can either arrive feeling peaceful and serene or with your heart thumping- it‟s up
to you. One of the hardest things I‟ve done in my life is to drop the keys back into Nigel‟s hand. I
wonder how much I could raise by selling my children?
Grace, Space and Pace no more. The XF is more like Style, Speed and Sex

WRITTEN BY: PHILIP PRIOR
ANOTHER CAT STORY—THE XJC WILLIAM LYONS LAST DESIGN The XJC is a two door version of the XJ6 four door saloon. When Sir William Lyons began styling exercise for the new XJ models in the mid 1960‟s, it was obvious that he had notions of a two door coupe in mind for eventual production. Many of these early styling mock-ups were based on the coupe theme in various shapes, forms and sizes, and the XJC was the last Jaguar car to be designed and built by Sir William Lyons. The two door coupe is based on the shorter wheelbase XJ Series l platform and was clearly meant to be the sporty version of the XJ models. In the UK, Europe, South Africa, New Zealand and Australia they were offered in four versions: Jaguar 4.2C; Jaguar 5.3C; Daimler Sovereign and the Daimler Double Six. All coupes were equipped with a black vinyl roof as standard equipment. Most likely it was because the marketing folks insisted on it, as vinyl roofs were the flavour of the month in the automotive industry at that time. Whatever the case, many present day owners have chosen to remove this feature. XJCs are extremely well proportioned with the styling of the pillarless coupe giving a sense of „openness‟ that is often associated with a convertible.
SADLY THE PRODUCTION OF THE XJC WAS ALL TOO SHORT. AFTER COMMENCEMENT IN 1975 THE
LAST OF THESE GREAT VEHICLES ROLLED OFF THE LINE IN NOVEMBER 1977.
Paradoxically this has helped the XJC to become the rare collectible classic it is today, although prices have never reached the dizzy heights achieved by the E-Type. The XJC remains one of, if not, the best value for money classic cars available today. To this day, the XJC is Jaguar‟s only two-door fixed head coupe saloon. Jaguar never produced the XJC in convertible form. However, a number of coach building companies as well as some private individuals produced a modified XJC in convertible form. This vehicle is one such example with the conversion carried out in 1998. (Information selected from www.XJC.com.au)
THE BUG BITES AGAIN Once I decided I wanted an XJC the search began in earnest. I found there were approximately ten for sale in Australia (mid 2010) in different configurations. I have to admit this surprised me given the relatively small number originally delivered in Australia. There were V12s, 4.2 ltr straight sixes, (a 4.2 ltr was always my preference) there were ones with and without the original vinyl roofs, some with leather and some with rather awful velour trim and in a range of conditions from rust buckets to some very nice cars. Prices on these cars ranged in price from $5,500 (eBay) to $38,000. I came within a Jaguar's whisker of purchasing the one priced at $38,000 having negotiated a final purchase price of $32,500. However, family issues intervened and I cooled off on that deal. It was a very nice car but in hindsight probably really worth around $25,000. For a brief period I seriously considered the purchase of a
12
XJS convertible but was not convinced of their collectable value. When this XJC convertible surfaced on the net there was little doubt this was the car for me and am delighted with my purchase. I think the fact that it compliments my X350 and the S Type so well was a real winner for me.
GOOD ADVICE IS SO HELPFUL I AM VERY GRATEFUL FOR THE HELP AND ADVICE RECEIVED FROM PHIL EVANS -THE MAN BEHIND
THE XJC REGISTER IN SYDNEY
Phil put me onto John Mann in Melbourne, a true gentlemen and a great source of knowledge when it comes to XJCs. John is a member of the Jag Club in Melbourne, a concourse judge, an owner of a very nice XJC and was happy to inspect two cars for sale in Victoria including this one. His reports were thorough and most helpful. Although John is somewhat of a purist when it comes to XJCs, being a concourse judge and all, (and therefore not initially excited about chopping the roof off a XJC) he was suitably impressed with this car. Thank you John! Just another illustration of the great friendship and support amongst Jaguar owners in Australia.
A LITTLE HISTORY Although I do not have a great deal of history on this car as yet, I do know it was Australian delivered to Russell Kinsela Pty Ltd in Narrabeen N.S.W. on the 18th of February 1977. It was sold by Bryson Industries Pty Ltd N.S.W. with original registration JK 248.
At some stage in the 1990s it was owned by a limousine company in Sydney. In early 1998 the car was owned by Mr R Spata who commissioned the conversion to a convertible, the work being done in Sydney by a well known company called "Chop Top". A full engineering certification was carried out at the time; a copy of which is now in my possession. The car was then purchased by another limousine company in NSW owned by Mike Horsley. Mike, I believe, had two of these cars and found he did not have the business to justify both, so the car was sold to yet another limousine company, "Surrey Limos" in Melbourne; from whom I purchased the
car. I have to say it was an absolute pleasure doing business with the seller, Tim Purdie. I guess most of us have had some horrid experiences when it comes to buying a used car. Tim presented the car beautifully for me on the day of purchase having arranged a full service and wheel alignment along with some other minor repairs and a Road Worthiness Certificate.
THE FIRST BIG TEST Having purchased the car, the first test was to drive it back to Adelaide. The car performed beautifully and we even negotiated a wild storm outside Ballarat, which really put the water proofing of the hood to the test. No leaks, no worries at all! Some will have noted that the car has had some cosmetic up-dates. The bumpers, door handles, boot lid, tail lights bonnet and grill are Series 3, whilst the wire wheels are Holden 14 inch (some will remember these from the 1970's offered as an option on Statesman) and the chrome wheel arches are a common extra. All of which I believe enhance the cars appearance and are very tasteful.
SO ALL I HAVE TO DO NOW IS ENJOY!!!!

JDCSA - ANNUAL JAG DAY 17 OCTOBER 2010
Despite some early rain there was a great turn out of Jaguars on the day. Apparently I am not the only person who thinks this car is desirable, or at least a little bit different.
I AM SURE THERE WAS A CERTAIN AMOUNT OF
NOVELTY APPEAL ON THE DAY
The car was voted runner-up in the "People's Choice" category. I have to say I was pretty pleased with that. I should say thank you to all my friends who turned up and voted for the car. It was great to see three XJC's present on the day, apparently there were only two at the Nationals last year.
Of course the real fun is the time one can spend in the shed working on these cars. There is always something
to do, a part to replace, a bit to clean up and paint etc. Then there are the great friendships and fellowship of
others who share the passion.
Editor Footnote
Great article Phill – The XJC is arguably one of the words most beautiful cars. It is also one of the rarest
production jaguars and is one model that many of the public are unaware of. It is not uncommon for people to
ask owners “how did you modify your four door so nicely!!!” (happens to me often). Enjoy the fun of driving a
great example of the marque Phil. - Editor

Car Talk
Greg: XJS Cabriolet has been sitting in its bubble. Took it for a run and went well.
Pete: XJS C is beautiful. Missing seems to have disappeared at the moment but still thirsty.
XJC going well after rotor button replaced.
Bruce: XJS broke down recently. Fly wheel sensor had packed up. ECU needed new
computer which left a hole in the back account.
Brian & Sue: A framed picture fell on the TWR XJS. Scuff‟s Mobile Paint Repair came out and
repainted/colour matched, cut and polished. The Magnum now looks spoofy. Took the
convertible out for a run. Braked and pulled to the left. Brake pressure was still on Right.
Had to take master cylinder off. Only available in US at great cost, so refitted an 87 master
cylinder and power brake (No ABS).
Rick: TWR painted. Stickers are currently being done. Sprayed up OK (Photos passed
around). Still need HE Bumpers for front and rear. Over heating in XJS still seems to be a
problem.
Scott: Bought recently and trailered down from Brisbane. Put the key in and it runs well.
Not sure if should have a chin spoiler. Group advised it should have. Greg may be able to
help out.
Lynton: Has 2 x XJS‟s. A 79 to run around in. Recently bought a 77 on the internet. Needs
quite a bit of work. Steering rack, Air conditioner, Window Seals/Rubbers all need
replacing/repairing.
Roger: E Type great. XK8 has a small leak. Both are set for All British Day.
NEXT MEETING: Will be on 11th March 2011. All welcome.
Roger Adamson,
Register Secretary

The Cat’s Giggle
The Mexican maid asked for a pay increase.
The wife was very upset about this and decided to talk to her about the
raise. She asked: "Now Maria, why do you want a pay increase?"
Maria: "Well, Señora, there are tree reasons why I wanna increaze."
"The first is that I iron better than you."
Wife: "Who said you iron better than me?"
Maria: "Jor huzban he say so."
Wife: "Oh yeah?"
Maria: "The second reason eez that I am a better cook than you."
Wife: "Nonsense, who said you were a better cook than me?"
Maria: "Jor hozban did"
Wife increasingly agitated:
"Oh he did did he???"
Maria: "The third reason is that I am better at sex than you in the bed."
Wife, really boiling now and through gritted teeth.
"And did my husband say that as well?"
Maria: "No Señora......The gardener did."
Wife: "So how much do you want?"
One beautiful summer's day, two English tourists were
driving through Wales.
At Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwyllllantysiliogogoch
they stopped for lunch. One of the tourists asked the waitress,
'Before we order, I wonder if you could settle an argument for us.
Can you pronounce where we are, very, very, very slowly?'
The girl leaned over and said, 'Burrr … gurrr … King'!
Got a joke? Send it to the editors and we’ll put it in the CM
