Home Improvement:Top Tips For The Best First Impression

It’s called “curb appeal,” that good im-pression people get of your home when they pull up in a car, or when walking by. Real estate agents can be as pleased with exterior curb appeal as they are with a well-maintained house on the inside. When it comes to residential property value, this book is indeed judged by its cover.

Exterior trouble areas include peeling paint; rotting wood on window frames; buckled roof shingles; overgrown shrubs; ignored lawns; and weeds growing through interlock paths, steps and the driveway.

“The lawns and landscaping that frame our home are as important as the quality in-side,” says Reinie Drygala, lawncare prod-ucts manager for Clear Choice, a leading name in innovative garden products. “And the good news is: when it comes to first impressions just a few little tips and tricks can make a big difference quickly.

“If you’re frustrated about overgrown weeds, for example, the newest herbi-cide technology is tackling that,” Drygala continued. “Now there are alternatives to traditional herbicides that effectively kill weeds, but also provide the homeowner with options if they are looking for ways to have less impact on the environment. The formulation for our Clear Choice se-

lective herbicide, for example, contains up to 85 percent less active ingredients as compared to other products using the same ingredients. As importantly, mi-crotechnology built into the formulation creates much smaller droplets that more efficiently deliver the herbicide to the plant. Clear Choice is effective on over 60 varieties of broadleaf weeds, killing them quickly while being friendly to your lawn.”

In addition to beautifying your lawn, try these quick tricks to give your home in-stant curb appeal:

• Scrape and spot-paint problem areas. This might be a temporary fix, but even a touch up is better than peel-ing paint.

• Add colour by planting some annuals in the front yard flowerbeds.

• Replace or paint rusty fixtures like the mailbox, railings, house number, and more.

• Tackle pesky weeds on interlock paths and driveway. Use hand sprays for tar-geted jobs, or larger jugs for a big sur-face area. More information at www.todaysclearchoice.com.

• Install lighting along your walkways and steps, or to spotlight the shape and architecture.

Day Trips For DadThis Father’s Day

Dads do a lot throughout the year, and Father’s Day is when they get their recogni-tion for all the helping hands they’ve offered in the last year. While it was once com-monplace to give Dad a necktie or another minor accessory for Father’s Day, many wives and children have begun to ensure Dad’s gift is a little more meaningful come his special day each June.

For those who want to think outside the box, how about you think outside the house as well? A day trip with Dad to a local attraction of note could be just what the doctor ordered to put a smile on Dad’s face this Father’s Day. The following ideas are just a few of the many day trips that Dad is sure to love this Father’s Day.

• Take Dad out to the ball game. If Dad is a fan of America’s pastime, take him out to the ball game for a day of fun in the sun watching his favorite team. If there isn’t a lo-cal Major League team in the area, look for a mi-nor league game instead. Minor league games are more intimate affairs, and Dad is sure to appreciate and cherish a day at the ballpark. Just don’t let Dad spend a dime all day!

• Hit the links. For the father who’s an avid golfer, nothing could be finer than a round of golf at his favorite course. Spend the afternoon hitting the links with Dad and then buy him a meal at the 19th hole.

• Catch some fish. For the father who loves to fish, a day at his favorite fish-ing hole could be a day of relaxation he’s sure to covet. Be sure to spend the day with Dad chatting about what’s been going on in his life and hopefully catch some fish along the way. And because there are no tickets to buy or greens fees to pay, give Dad that new fishing pole he wants.

• Go on tour. For the Dad who loves his wine, perhaps a wine tour could make

for a great weekend getaway. Book some rooms at a nearby hotel and tour a few local vineyards, ending the night with a delicious dinner and, of course, a bottle of wine.

• Rock out! For the father who still loves to crank up his stereo, consider some concert tickets to see one of his favorite bands. Because Father’s Day falls during the warm weather season, consider an outdoor concert venue where everyone can sit under the stars and toast Dad as the music plays.

• Run for the hills. If Dad is an avid out-doorsman, a camping trip or a hike through a nearby park is an ideal way to spend some quality time together away from the pressures of everyday life. Dad may appreciate getting away from it all, and the fresh mountain air can’t be matched when it comes to some R&R.

A water feature in the backyard is not only an attractive way to add dimension and visual interest to the entertaining space, it can also be a tranquil, relaxing place to which to retire. A pond filled with marine plants or fish can be a welcome re-spite in the yard.

For those who haven’t done major ex-cavation or built something similar in the yard before, it pays to become educated before digging the first hole. In order to ensure the fish pond goes in correctly, there are a few things the do-it-yourselfer needs to know.

• Determine size. Many first-time pond builders simply make their ponds too small. If fish or a lot of aquatic plants are planned, be sure to size it large enough to accommodate growth. Err on the larger size -- some dirt can always be added back if it seems too large. A koi pond should be at least four feet deep at its deepest point. One can vary the depths of the pond by creating shelfs of dirt or rock.

• Determine location. The best place to put a pond is close to the house so that it can be enjoyed when someone is outdoors or inside. Also take into consideration rain run-off. This may contain chemicals from fertilizers and pesticides that can contami-nate pond life. Avoid locating it too close to trees, otherwise a lot of time will be spent cleaning out leaves and other debris. If the pond will be growing only plants, be sure it gets a few hours of steady sun a day. For a pond containing only fish, shade will be adequate.

• Plan on water circulation. Although circulation is not a must, it can help aerate the water and clean out debris, if a filter is used. Plus, moving water is less susceptible to insect larvae growth like that of mosqui-

toes. Figure a waterfall or water jet into the design and a skimmer that will suck out the water. Be sure the skimmer is positioned so that the level of the pond water meets halfway up the skimmer box. If a water-fall will be used, gradually slope the pond away from the waterfall to direct water to-ward the skimmer. Check municipal build-ing codes to see if a permit will be needed for the pond and the requisite plumbing/electrical work. There may be regulations as to how deeply the power line must be buried and other requirements.

• Purchase the correct liner size. Be sure to purchase the right size liner for the pond. Measure the maximum length and width of the pond. Double the depth of the pond and add it to these measure-ments. Add a foot or two for overlap and this will give you the pond liner size.

* Pay attention to rocks and gravel.Too much gravel at the bottom of the pond may cause noxious gases to build up that can gradually kill off marine life. Only put about 2 inches of gravel. Also, keep in mind that some rocks are better left out of the pond design. Limestone can affect the pH of the pond water making it very acidic. Try to make the pond look as natu-ral as possible, hiding pipes and electrical switches with plants and other landscaping items.

• Fill and get started. Be sure to include some aquatic plants because those will help create the right mix of nutrients into the water that can feed fish and other plant life. There is also pre-packaged pond bac-teria to prime the pond filter. Let the filter run a day or two before adding any fish to ensure that the water condition is right.
