LANGUAGE ARTSBOOK CLUB Cathy Lemble

By sharing our responses to the books that we select to read together, we will deepen our experience of great literature. We will read some books as a whole class, with others we will break into small groups, or literature circles, based on the students’ choice of several books. These literature circles will allow students to gravitate toward a comfortable reading level as they take on specific roles to facilitate discussion. Students will practice moving from teacher-directed to student-directed learning experiences through taking on these roles. MATERIALS FEE: Cost of books.

Chickadee Readers is a class designed to practice and improve reading skills on the road to fluency. Students will be expected to document 15 minutes of reading at home daily and parents are encouraged to read to their child regularly. Inspired by great literature, this class will focus on expanding their writing while honing writing skills. YOUNG READERS Sheryl Cochran

Young Readers is a yearlong class designed to support emerging and beginning readers as they develop independent reading strategies. First grade reading skills are taught. This term students will continue to expand their phonemic awareness, explore letter and world patterns, and build their sights word vocabulary through poems, stories, games and other literacy activities. Comprehension strategies will also be taught. Students will spend a portion of class reading leveled books in pairs and/or in small groups.

In this high school level Algebra 1 class, students will continue with chapters 8-13 from the University of Chicago Algebra 1 textbook. We also will explore algebra through hands-on activities, games, and a semester project. Students will participate in unit quizzes, tests, and homework will be assigned after each class. Fall semester Algebra I is a pre-requisite for this class. Students must have a TI 83+ graphing calculator or equivalent.

FOUNDATIONS OF ALGEBRA Max Lawson

This course is a continuation from the Fall semester. We will move into the Connected Math curriculum and study systems of equations, algebraic applications with polynomials, Pythagorean theorem, and data analysis. Through exploratory lessons, hands-on activities and games and a semester project we will build a solid foundation for High School Algebra. Homework will be assigned after each class, and there is an option for a grade.

The second semester of Math 5 will be an in-depth exploration into the world of rational numbers-fractions and decimals. We will use real-world application to bring meaning to what "parts of the whole" really represent. Students will be encouraged to discuss multiple solutions to math problem solving while at the same time developing the concrete skills needed to feel confident with numbers and performing operations/investigations with them. We will also be exploring attributes of 2 and 3 dimensional polygons.

We will continue our journey deeper into mathematics and the study of rational numbers. Through hands-on exploratory lessons, meaningful discussions and extensive calculations we will dive into middle school mathematics. We will study two and three-dimensional geometry; operations with fractions, decimals and percents; probability; uses of variables in equations; and the order of operations. Homework will be assigned weekly, and there will be a grade option.

TREE HOMES AND FROG MATH                                    Sheryl Cochran and Tara Elder-HammondEnrolling in this class gives you a chance to experience two classes in one! We will divide the students into two groups and for half of the semester, they will be in Tree Homes and the other half will be Frog Math – 9 weeks of each. Frog Math: Frogs, our slimy, webbed feet friends, will be the focus of this fun series of cooperative, hands-on math activities.  Students will predict, ponder, and play as they develop valuable skills in estimating, classifying, graphing, and strategic-thinking.  Literature, art, and a little bit of science will be interwoven throughout this class.  Join us as we Hop to the Pond!  Ribbit! Tree Homes encourages appreciation for trees and for the animals that live in tree homes. The unit is designed to stimulate children's interest in the world around them and in the biological need for warmth and shelter. It introduces different parenting and nesting strategies, and compares the characteristics and behaviors of various tree-home animals. WORDBIRDS Robin Hawley

This semester in WordBirds, our academic focus will be social studies and writing. Thematically, our explorations will take us around the world with shelter. We will begin our learning with the basic human need for shelter. As we build our awareness about shelter, we will investigate shelters around the world and some cultural aspects including literature, art, and geography. We will read, write, and practice our map skills. First priority for this class will go to continuing WordBird students. Parents are asked to volunteer in the classroom at least one time per month.
